Or the melta's were made by Orks. Since no one remembered them, none of them actually worked. They'll go off once its convenient, because Plot.

Well, sounds like the two of them will get along just fine, eh? Besides, what both parties should be worried about was that lovely barrage of Earthshaker ordinance that could not have done the melta bomb's stability any favors.

I do believe the general approach should be something along the lines of back up lively, and run even more lively!
