He got fired the SmackDown after Extreme Rules where he again cost Asuka the title. It really made it seem like they brought him back because otherwise there's no way Asuka should reasonably lose to Carmella of all people.

As an Asuka fan every moment post WrestleMania involving her has been a downward spiral of agony. Bringing James Ellsworth back just to basically keep Asuka from winning twice really tested my resolve.
