If Maya was honest, the last thing she wanted to do was go meet the rest of the Coven. She’d gone to hospital the night before with Vashti and after a long wait for her much less life threatening injury, had gotten a splint on her finger. Which meant that she’d basically lost the use of her left hand which wasn’t annoying at all for finishing school work.

Or, like, everything.

She had ended up going to the Beach House in the morning, mostly because she was hungry and it was easier to buy food on the way than figure out cooking with one hand. So she’d turned up earlier than planned with breakfast in hand, finding an empty bedroom to take for herself while just relaxing.

Sadly, because of her decision to actually go relax at the Beach House, she couldn’t just ignore the message from Claudette with some excuse that she was too injured to drive (she probably was since it was her hand, but that hadn’t stopped). So she forced herself out of the silent comfort of the bedroom and down to the pool.

Isla slept half the day away after the adrenaline of the night before, dreams filled with horrendous flesh creatures and weeby whispering. She’d pretty much collapsed in a random bed after Mariah got them both back there and hadn’t emerged until the sun was high in the sky.

Once she woke up and dragged herself out of a far too comfortable bed, she showered and found the room she’d actually claimed as her own (and thankfully without anyone else in it). She’d changed into a way too baggy t-shirt and some shorts she hadn’t stolen before merrily blinking her way down to the pool area.

It was far too hot for her poor Scottish ass, and how better to cool down than sticking her feet in the water!

She looked up as others started to enter, figuring that they wanted to lounge around the pool too and continued to sit on the edge splashing her feet in the water.

Maya looked very much like she wanted to kill someone when she entered, though her grumpy expression was kinda offset by the fact she was wearing a simple white summer dress and looked like some kid who didn’t get given chocolate. She let out an exaggerated sigh as she sat down, waiting silently for Claudette to actually explain what was going on so that she could get on with her day (which she knew was unlikely).

"I know yesterday was a bit rough... it didn't exactly go as... I originally planned."
Claudette

“You mean you didn’t plan for it to end up with a massive lizard creature trying to kill us, some dinosaur bones mauling someone and the DENs on our ass again?” Maya raised an eyebrow. “A bit rough is an understatement.”

She folded her arms as she listened to the rest of what Claudette said, while Isla craned her head to realise that it wasn’t just people lounging about but some kind of meeting.

“Accomplish both today? In one day?” Maya continued with her general negativity, because she was in a bad mood anyway (when wasn’t she), but it seemed pretty unrealistic. She was phrasing it as if they could just do both right there. “And you don’t even know where to start…”

“Maybe if we just look hard enough we’ll find someone!” Isla piped up where she still sat splashing her feet in the pool. “I bet there’s some back alley supernatural healers or shit like that. Or if we hunt down on the internet… Like, I don’t know this area well but I can get into all sorts of places if we need to when trying to find someone!”

Maya rolled her eyes at the Scottish girl’s rambling. It was basically a whole load of nothing… not that she had anything useful to add. “I hate to suggest it, but what about DENs? Don’t they have tabs on a whole bunch of supernatural. Not that I’d want to be more in debt to them or anything.”

Maya’s ears rang as she stepped forward, completely unable to hear the Jaw’s roar at her right before it disappeared. She kept an eye on Madison as the others went to check on Vashti. It seemed that she wasn’t going to do it again… or the Jaws wasn’t going to, since she claimed it wasn’t her at the time. Maya kept her judgements to herself. She’d just soundblast anymore attacks if need be.

She had been ripping Emily’s hair out just moments ago after all (and would do so again if she was given the opportunity).

The sound of a car pulling up broke through the loud ringing and she turned with narrowed eyes to find bi- Agent Liao stepping out looking like she was attempting to be some kind of cool business woman. It just made her look like an asshole (or maybe she was going for that too).

"Every time I show up somebody is hurt."
Meifeng

“Maybe if you turned up earlier each time, we wouldn’t be,” Maya snapped, unable to hold it back after whatever the fuck had just happened. She was constantly switching between anger, shock, exhaustion and intense fucking pain and it was making her even more grouchy than she had been.

She didn’t even look all that happy that Trevor was there. It was partly because he was hanging back and also because the adrenaline of everything had been drained from her body, and she was in intense pain from when she’d slammed into the ground after being thrown through the air. Still she gave him a (very pained) smile and a half assed wink. Flirting wasn’t really in the equation so much as getting treated and in bed.

Her injured hand was throbbing now, and a quick glance told her that her already broken finger had been bent even more out of place thanks to fighting with Emily. Worth it.

She walked over to the people gathering around Vashti, mostly addressing Herik and Claudette rather than the DENs agent tending to Vashti.

“Can’t we just go to a hospital?” She held up her hand, with a very visibly bent backwards and broken finger. “It’d be better for Vashti and I need to get a splint or whatever for this. Aside from whatever they’re talking about,” she waved in the direction of Meifeng and Lyss having a conversation she couldn’t care less about, “I think the rest of us need rest and not stupid government interrogations.”

Isla had absolutely no clue what Mariah said but she could tell that it was probably something panicked considering how much she was crying. She didn’t even mind that she was being held and rocked as if she was a baby because she was still very much in shock herself. She’d never been one to care about physical contact, even in this weird situation, and she was far too tired to do anything but crack open one eye.

That creature wasn’t something she’d get out of her mind anytime soon. She was going to have nightmares of it, she could tell that already. What if it followed her home? She didn’t even have a home. What if it found her on the streets one night? She’d had enough non deadly glomping from twelve year olds on the internet back in the day, she didn’t need it from a flesh eating creature.

She turned her head slightly to look at the others, freezing in panic at the massive van with FBI clearly on the side. Fuck, was she about to get deported?! Wait, wouldn’t that be a good thing? She wasn’t sure.

“Aw fuck, is that the cops, I ain’t here for that, how the hell did they end up here,” she started rambling quietly while trying to figure out if she had the energy to scramble away before they noticed her and her definitely not legal ass. “Am no on any kinda visa, what if they kick me out, that’d be shite.”

She really didn’t have the energy to move. Maybe if she stayed here in Mariah’s arms and pretended to be dead the other girl would carry her away and she wouldn’t be noticed at all.

“Eh?” Maya turned her head as Lyss’ shout actually took her attention away from her cat fight with Emily. Oh. Shit was really going down and she hadn’t noticed any of it.

She couldn’t really bring herself to give much of a fuck about it.

And it seemed like they had it under control and all since the Leviathan disappeared and was replaced by a very loud and screaming Vashti. Yeah, she should probably head home and get to a hospital… Could she even drive like this? She looked down at her broken finger with a frown. Yeah, it’d be fine.

"What the hell?!"
Emily

Maya’s head snapped up because she was certain Emily was about to go off at her again… but it was Madison going off at Vashti. In a very much “I’m going to kill you way.” It might be hypocritical for Maya to be against it but she hadn’t quite tried to kill Emily… yet.

“What happened to watching out for each other and that shit?!” She shouted as she ran over as if she hadn’t just been ripping out another member’s hair. “Get off her!”

Unsure if it would have any effect on the Jaws, who seemed pretty fucking powerful, Maya shot out as powerful of a sound blast as she could at Madison in the hopes it would dislodge her and stop the jaws from ripping into Vashti.

And hopefully wouldn’t turn it on her.

Mariah screamed, Isla screamed and the godforsaken creature basically screamed (its words were as painful as if it had). It was the most horrifying sight she’d ever seen as Kara was practically turned into little bits and became one with the apparition. It was among the worst things she’d seen and honestly she’d rather go right back into Paradise.

“THE FUCK- DID IT JUST- I-”

She was completely frozen with her mouth fallen wide open, trying to process what had just happened and trying to make sense of the words it was saying that seemed far too much like things she’d read on forums at 3am while delving into places she couldn’t. It struck more fear in her than anything else ever had.

She didn’t protest as Mariah picked her up and started running, instead she actually clung to the much taller girl as if she was a lifeline against the owoing fleshy mass. She certainly had longer legs…

Wait, she could teleport! Screw nearly passing out afterwards, drastic times called for drastic measures.

Thankfully she was in Mariah’s arms, which meant she didn’t have to worry about contact. Her beanie glowed a bright purple as she concentrated and teleported them both away from the swamp and right back to where the capture the flag game had been going on (because she’d definitely take godzilla over getting yiffed).

Her eyes immediately closed once she’d teleported them, incredibly glad that she wasn’t standing so she didn’t fall right on her ass. She was absolutely exhausted from using her abstraction too much… nevermind teleporting others tiring her out even more. Fuck, she needed a nap.

“I hope… it didnae follow us…” Isla panted out, accent thickening with her tiredness and not even bothering to open her eyes (or politely get out of Mariah’s arms, this was payment for the teleportation). She had no idea if that lizard was still raging but honestly she didn’t care. “I… dinnae wanna… see tha’ again… Am pure done...”

“I may be a slut, but at least I have standards!” Maya shouted back, completely ignoring the fact that she was very quickly getting drenched in rain she wasn’t dressed for. Dramatic thunder punctuated her words - were her sound blasts developing to become like thunder? Or perhaps the universe just decided it was right to give this epic showdown the sounds and lighting it deserved. Emily’s words only served to anger her further, even if they hardly hurt (why would they?)

“Your bitchy ass is the one no one wants to touch, at least someone has touched mine!” she continued, taking an aggressive step back towards Emily (even though her hands were still up covering her chest). “Even if you’re in denial that you’re a fucking lesbian, no girl wants to be with a nasty, ugly bitch like you!”

Basically no one paid attention to Isla’s shout.

Which was fair enough, considering the crashing thunder and massive fight going on. Only Claudette (the leader?) came over to her… and Isla wasn’t about to teleport just the two of them. Far too much effort for far too little gain.

She turned to Claudette with a shrug. “I ain’t teleporting just us!” She quickly glanced around. A few people were fighting the lizard creature, two girls were still arguing with each other… and the other newbie who she totally hadn’t tripped over sprinted right into the woods. She pointed in that direction. “Y’know what, I’m gonna go after her, I’ll be back to get more people out!”

In typical Isla fashion she didn’t wait for any response at all, completely rescinding her offer to teleport people away from the rampaging lizard. She sprinted towards the forest, spacing out her blinking to try catch up without exhausting herself. She honestly had no idea what she was planning to do - probably get Mariah out of the situation, because she’d seemed terrified and Isla couldn’t blame her (she should be too, if only she wasn’t all sorts of fucked up in the brain).

She heard a splashing from just up ahead as she blinked past a particularly nasty bit of swamp (when had it even become that). “Mariah, wait up- What the fuck is that?!”

Isla clamped hands over her ears at the combined screaming of both Mariah and the horrendous looking creature. Her eyes widened at the disjointed words that came from the mound of flesh.

“WHY THE FUCK DOES IT SOUND LIKE SOMETHING THAT CRAWLED RIGHT OUTTA THE DEEP WEB?!”

Isla was very close to joining in the screaming, forcing herself not to run away and instead moving forward to grab Mariah’s arm. She desperately wanted to teleport them both away from the flesh blob that looked like it wanted to fucking hug them. But if she did she’d definitely pass out and… what if it found them again.

She shuddered. She'd rather the rampaging godzilla knockoff than this.

“Let’s… back away slowly… before it tries to do what it said… maybe it won't notice us...”

Maya froze.

Her brain entirely stopped functioning as she slowly moved her head from looking at Emily, down to the hand that was grabbing her chest. And not moving away. She then lifted her head back up to look back at Emily.

The shock and sheer awkwardness had her stationary for moments as she just stared down.

Then she snapped out of it, rolling off of Emily and to the side. She instantly crawled backwards and away before putting her arms in front of herself in a protective stance.

“If anyone’s the pervert, it’s you! I’ve never felt so violated in my life!”

Maya may be into people of all kinds, and she wouldn’t exactly call herself fussy, but she definitely wasn’t into Emily. In fact, she was the last person she’d ever want to touch her anywhere.

She was still gaping at Emily, of half a mind to soundblast her to increase the distance between them. Her concentration on her incredibly awkard staring meant that she was completely unaware of the shit show going on around them.

“What the fuck?” Isla’s dark eyes widened as little Vashti, the former flag bearer, turned into an absolutely colossal lizard creature. Now Isla had seen a lot in her stint in a completely different world (sorta), but she hadn’t seen fucking real life godzilla. “Is that normal?!”

She turned to look at Mariah as if she would have an answer to the question… which of course she wouldn’t, because she was also seeing this for the first time.

Completely unsure of what to do she went to jump to her feet, an awkward motion of exhaustion that resulted in her leg tangling with Mariah’s and them both following right down. Isla sat in the dirt, stunned as the other newbie practically crawled away. On the other hand she just stared up at used to be Vashti now a massive lizard.

She wasn’t actually scared, more than her normal caution. Could that thing kill her with one swipe? Hell yeah. And she did want to live but honestly, if she was gonna go some way it would be pretty cool to meet her end at the jaws of a massive lizard person thing.

Okay, wait, that was an awful idea.

The flag was completely out of her mind now, because getting away from the rampaging lizard seemed like the best course of action. She blinked towards Claudette and Grace-

Only she didn’t blink. The fuck? Isla narrowed her eyes as her beanie glowed and intense purple as she tried again and again, taking moments before she finally flashed forward.

And almost fell right back on her ass from the dizziness of it all. Fuck, this was a massive mistake. She should be running away not towards (and totally ignoring the temptation to boop the lizard creature on its sort of nose, very close to its terrifying teeth). Why did she even want to go grab the other two when she’d only met them today?

Isla shook her head and, against the sensible part of her mind telling her to run, shouted, “get over to me and I can teleport us away from here!”

“You wish, you basic white bitch, I won’t-”

Maya was cut off by a weird fox creature barrelling right into her and throwing her already poor (thanks abstraction) balance off, and combined with Emily’s awful punches it was enough to throw her over. In the split second before she fell on her ass she moved her hands out of Emily’s hair and around her neck to pull her right down with her.

They fell onto the ground and Maya instantly went back to fighting with the other girl, grabbing her hair and yanking hard. She swung her legs around Emily and tried to forcefully roll so that she was the one on top.

“Oh Emily, sure you aren’t interested in me? Rolling on the ground like this…” She smirked as she tugged her hair harder, even though it fucking hurt her own hand. "Seems like something a lesbian would enjoy."

“Hell yes!” Isla fist pumped at the air when Kara got knocked over and Vashti managed to grab the flag off of her. She dropped the abstraction that was cast over Kara so that she could move again, letting out an exhausted sigh. All of the blinking and use of almost all of what she could do had her drained. She was fairly certain now she could just sit back and watch Vashti beeline for their side.

Until Madison crashed right into Vashti.

That shit looked nasty, but Isla didn’t have the energy or stamina anymore to go after the flag. Someone else could… she’d done her part by teleporting around like mad. Even if it was useless.

It seemed Mariah thought the same thing, having stopped clashing with Madison, and she wandered over to her before plopping right down next to her on the ground.

“So, do you think we’ve lost?” She nodded over towards Madison and Vashti.

Maya smirked as she hit Emily and sent her sprawling further away. She slowly forced herself to stand up as her ears rang and her head spun. But this was going to be easy. All Emily had done so far with her abstraction was fling herself into the dirt whereas Maya actually knew how to use hers. She could just sound blast her a bunch of times until she admitted defeat… fuck.

Claudette had said their abstractions in any way that was harmful. Which was Maya’s entire abstraction. Well, she hadn’t said anything about hurting each other in other ways.

Maya was distracted wallowing in thought over the stupid rule Claudette had put in place, and the first rock hit her square in the forehead and snapped her right out of it. A sharp pain spread around her already aching head but she ignored it as she flung up her arms to block the rest of the stone barrage.

It would be easier to blast it all away, but where was the fun in deafening herself?

One of the pebbles smacked right into her broken finger, her hand dropping with a cry of pain. She gritted her teeth as she narrowed her eyes at Emily, taking a step forward. “Is that really all you can do with that new abstraction of yours? I don’t think I even need mine to beat you…”

She smirked before quickly covering the distance between them, bringing up her knee to try to slam Emily in the stomach with it and grabbing onto her hair and pulling sharply.

Wow, she’d really fucked things up.

But how was Isla supposed to predict that one of the other newbies would extend out a massive tree arm and grab the flag? She’d totally not seen that coming at all. So could they really fault her? If she hadn’t thrown the flag someone else would’ve got it.

Ok, she definitely should have grabbed it herself. But there was no point in worrying about that.

Vashti was already going after Kara and nobody else was a threat to the flag. Isla stood in place as her beanie once again glowed a bright purple, holding out a hand towards Kara and yelling (unnecessarily), “Stop!”

A faint purple glow appeared around Kara as Isla used her abstraction to try to force her to stop running, even as it slowed her down too, in the hope it would mean Kara couldn’t easily avoid Vashti’s drop kick.

Maya barely had a chance to think as Claudette called for them to start, and Madison grabbed her (in a totally not gay way) and yeeted her high into the air towards the flag. Her screams were partly shock and partly intimidation as she spun in the air and dive bombed towards the flag.

Only the ground was approaching her much fucking faster than she expected. With one arm she reached out to grab the flag, throwing out the other hand with a sound blast against a nearby tree. Her ears rang as she sent herself flying backwards. Her fingers curled around the flag.

Except, she’d completely missed when she’d grasped at it and only gotten air. Fuck!

Maya flew backwards, legs flailing down and catching the ground painfully. This caused her to trip from the high speeds she was travelling in and fall back, head slamming into the ground and hand caught underneath her as she tried to slow her fall.

“FUCK” Maya yelled, rolling over and clutching her left hand. One of the fingers was bent at an awkward angle and she was pretty sure she’d broken it… but at least her wrist was alright! She could still move everything else, the searing pain travelling from the crooked finger through her entire arm was nothing. No pain, no gain, or something.

Not that she’d even gotten the flag.

She shot bolt upright as something sparked next to her, eyes narrowing and noticing the thin lightning bolts that Grace was shooting at her. Her head spun with the impact and confusion and she almost threw up. Why was she shooting at her?

Then she noticed the face planted Emily right next to her. A grin crossed her lips. All according to plan (especially the near concussion and broken finger).

“Hey Emily, you sure do like landing ass up, don’t you,” Maya taunted, because attacking silently wasn’t her thing when it came to the person she very much wanted to be in the dirt. “Here, let me help you get up.”

She twisted around where she sat and sent out a sound blast at Emily, which should flip her right over and away if it hit.

Isla hesitated as they were told to start, having absolutely no idea what the plan was. Was there even a plan? They certainly hadn’t agreed on everything.

Whatever, time to give it her best shot!

She ran forward right towards the flag, head tilted up towards the two people flung through the air as she blinked forward, then rapidly to the side to avoid one of them who blasted herself backwards. Mariah was right towards the flag and dealing with the other girl who’d been thrown there.

She blinked again, landing right next to the flag and Madison as an orange arrow pointed towards her. Was that supposed to draw attention? Whatever.

Instead of grabbing the flag, as was probably inspected, Isla held out her hand and purple sigils glowed around both the flag and her beanie. She lifted the flag up into the air with her abstraction and craned her head around, pinpointing her gaze on Vashti.

“Vashti, catch!” she yelled, flinging the flag right towards her with telekinesis. Hopefully the other girl should be able to catch it and get away.

Only, her aim was absolutely terrible and she sent it flying in a completely different direction, blood beginning to drip down from her nose as it got outside of her range of control.

Maya’s eyebrows shot up as Madison placed a heavy hand on her shoulder, turning away slightly to avoid the smell of alcohol coming off her. Not that it helped when the other girl leaned in to whisper to her.

“You’re right,” Maya murmured back. “And if she transforms… she’ll probably be detrimental to them rather than helpful.”

She then folded her arms as two of the newcomers (well, Grace was less so) were called over. Maya hadn’t paid much attention to them but they seemed… okay. Even if Grace was far too annoyingly bright. She was just glad she wasn’t on a team with Quinn or Emily.

"... And I'm just gonna make a long story short and say I'm going to throw you at the flag."
Madison

“You’re going to throw me at the flag?” Maya pointed to herself, mouth forming an o shape, as she thought it over. At first it seemed ridiculous but the more she considered it the more she thought it was a great idea. After all, what was the point in coming out of something like this without any injuries? And she could probably use her directed soundblasts to make sure she didn’t completely collide with a tree.

Or even better, aim so she smashed right into Emily.

“Alright, let’s do it,” Maya nodded, dark eyes shining with a somewhat ferocious competitiveness. “If I grab the flag I can keep them all away with my blasts and get it back to you so that they can’t get it. I probably won’t be injured too much by your throw… either way, they definitely won’t expect it.”

She waved a hand as Kara asked about how they’d been thrown. “You don’t need to be thrown too if you’re too scared about it.” She then tilted her head towards Grace, who was bouncing around as if this was actually a game that wasn’t going to turn into a complete bloodbath. “Glad someone else isn’t as worried about it.”

“When you throw me, aim so that I can hit Emily with a blast or myself along with the flag.” As she spoke she pulled a hairband out of her pocket and tied her hair back, so it wouldn’t get in the way. “This is the perfect opportunity to settle some grudges.”

Isla completely ignored the shit talking of her that she’d half overheard, because she honestly couldn’t care less (on the outside). But it was nice to feel like she was an important part of this team! The training exercise had ended up as one that really played to her strengths.

She nodded as Emily explained her plan, and then when Mariah explained an entirely different one that Isla struggled to keep up with (accent differences worked both ways). She struggled to concentrate on it but was fairly certain she understood a little of it by the end.

“So you’re saying you’re gonna make us draw attention so that she,” Isla pointed to Vashti, “can sneak in past ‘em? That makes a lotta sense cause they’re gonna go right for me since I showed off all my blinking.” She tugged at her hair as she thought a bit more. “But ain’t there a little problem there? They’re gonna go for the flag rather than us first… and how d’you know that they won’t get there faster.”

It was a good idea, but Isla was also the fastest one of them. If they were starting from where they were… well she could blink right over to the flag and then blink away before they’d even get there. Sure, it’d exhaust her, but she’d be able to pass the flag over before the other team could do anything.

She then clapped her hands together with a smile as Vashti expressed an awful lot of interest in the idea. Well if she was onboard for sneaking in then Isla was all down for it. It was nice to see someone else hyped up! “Alright, you know what, it sounds like a great idea. Maybe I can take them on a wild chase by blinking aw aboot the place. Then if needed I can blink in and teleport, uh, Vashti out, ay?” She looked at Vashti with an even wider smile. "I ain't able to teleport people more than once every so often, but if it works out I can grab you when you get the flag."

“Capture the flag?” Maya’s mouth fell open in shock when Claudette arrive carrying some kind of stupid looking flag. “Your idea is capture the fucking flag?”

She shook her head as Emily, so typically, grabbed it with some new dazzling (lame) powers and acted as if she’d already won the dumb game they were going to play. She was so tempted to grab it right off her… but she resisted, because it was better to save her energy for the actual thing. She may not be too fond of the idea but whatever, she’d give it her all (to beat some people into the dirt).

“I think it sounds fun!” Isla piped up with a wide grin, stuffing her hands into her pockets.

"You know what, just be gentle as possible. I'm going to let you all decide."
Claudette

“Whoa,” Maya put her hands up, eyes narrowing slightly as Claudette rattled off a list of rules. “I get not harming each other too much but that seems pretty one sided against those of us that have abstractions that mostly do damage… whatever I’ll try not to hurt anyone”

“Well, I’m going on the team that Emily’s not on,” she said as she noted that Herik was already rounding up a little band. She stepped to the side opposite where he was. She then pointed to Herik, Emily, Vashti and Mariah. “They’ve already got four…” she quickly counted their numbers. “We got enough for six people per team, so I need five more.”

For someone who’d seemed so against the idea at first, she sure was into it… probably because she had a competitive streak and was absolutely looking forward to smashing Emily’s face into the dirt.

Isla had blinked over towards Herik as soon as he said her name, grinning widely. “I can’t actually get it and come back right away… I can mostly just short distance teleport, so it won’t be that easy.” She shrugged. “If that’s alright I’m happy to join!”

"--I'm on your team, sis!"
Mariah

“Well, I guess that settles it,” Isla nodded to Mariah, before remembering she struggled with her accent and forcing herself to talk a bit slower along with toning down her accent (which was less successful). “Good to be on your team!” She grinned wider. “I can short distance teleport an awful lot, but longer distance is more of a problem for me… so I won’t be able to just win the game for use! No need to worry about there being no training because of that.”
