Most people know of or have heard of the Salem witch trials. For those that don't; hundreds of years ago, paranoid townsfolk would hunt down women and men - and sometimes animals - accused of using witchcraft. They would be taken to trial, biased in favor of 'regular' people, who would fake evidence and refute the accused's alibis simply to keep their towns normal and safe. Little did they know that there were truly people who could be considered witches, with powers to do unimaginable things.

Witchcraft has risen again in certain individuals. To the world, these people were phenomenons, quickly becoming internet sensations. Everyone was completely fascinated by them; some would go out of their way to search and befriend the more powerful ones. They were like celebrities. In fact, some of them were. 

The peace and admiration did not last long.

Witches who thought, because they had powers, they were 'superior' to those without special abilities gathered in groups similar to cults. They would devise ways to prove to 'normal' humans that they were better in every way. It began with small thing: pranks, staged fights, propaganda. As time passed and they became more confident, it started getting worse.

One day, a young witch by the name of Merletta Backus took advantage of a crowded festival and made her move. Tens of thousand of people died, not excluding those with power themselves. It was nondiscriminatory slaughter, but 'normal' people thought of it as a declaration of war. Thus began the hunts.

They began as merely searches for the witches who publicly spoke out against those without power. The main target was Merletta herself, who had escaped that fateful day. Her being brought to justice was not enough and the world was filled with blood lust and fear. Soon, there was a decree that any witch, or person assisting a witch, would be taken in, questioned, and then locked away in a prison built to prevent them from using their abilities. 

Chaos ensued. Hundreds of the world’s witches were hunted down and brought in to the world governments, eventually sent to the prisons or taken in for testing. There are very few left; those that choose to hide themselves away for protection, those who oppose the hunts and joined a group of radical witches, or those who decided to avoid making enemies out of themselves and siding with the government instead.

Some of the individuals who are on the run have decided that it's better to be in group settings than alone, so they've formed covens. These covens involve any amount between five witches and fifty. The larger groups have underground systems and large networks for their group. Smaller groups are more likely to have just one or two buildings for themselves. 

There is some sort of hierarchy to the covens. Typically, the 'leaders' are those who started the coven, but occasionally someone who has amazing control of their power will take over. Some groups will have votes and others will duel for the top spot.

Witches did not just suddenly get their powers through some spontaneous twist of fate. At some point before the age of two, special children are blessed by an unnamed higher being, leaving them with special abilities. More often than not, these blessed children are of the same family; parents who both have been blessed almost always have blessed children. These children who are given power are called Blood Witches. However, some are not granted these powers, even if everyone else in their family has had them. Those in this situation choose to go to extremes - through deals or force. These witches were dubbed Devil Children.

Like everything, these powers come with a consequence, or rather a price. Without paying this price, a witch would lose their power until they did pay the price. The price could be anything from sacrificing a goat in front of an altar every fifth day to dedicating hours to cleaning a shrine on the weekend. Every witch reacts differently to losing their power. Some may feel like they just awoke from an hour of sleep, others might have a pounding headache for days. Power loss is always temporary to Blood Witches, but Devil Children could lose them forever, so they must follow the price.

Though already granted powers, witches can learn and do more with the help of spell books. These contain in-depth knowledge about witch history, powers, rituals, curses, simple spells, and prices. Books are kept hidden from people who would harm them or people who would abuse their knowledge. For example, some covens or families have libraries to keep them and others bury them in their backyard (personal preference, really). 

Some of these books detail the topic of familiars. These are essentially incarnations of power, able to magnify the witch's own power to astonishing levels. Like powers themselves, there is a high price for these familiars, resulting in them being rare and mostly unwanted. The witch and the familiar are connected - rather, linked. If the familiar is hurt, the witch is hurt. Capture a familiar and the witch is stuck, too. They can heal, but they can also be killed. Once a familiar is gone, no other familiars can be summoned.

1. Roleplayerguild rules apply as usual.
2. Be nice! I don't want to see any fighting in the OOC of this roleplay. If a fight gets started, resolve it within three posts or take it to PM. 
3. Criticism, however, is allowed. If you don't think someone's post aligns with their character, tell them politely. Include what is wrong with it and possibly how it could be fixed. Again, be nice with this and don't start something without valid reason. If it escalates, take it to PM.
4. Swearing is allowed, to some extent. Make sure you aren't dropping an f-bomb in every sentence, and you should be good.
5. Keep sexual details to an absolute minimum. If you want it to go further, fade to black or take it to PM. Some of the users do not want to see that, and they shouldn't have to. 
6. If you need help, ask me or the other users; most of us are always willing to help. 
7. No OP characters! They do not have infinite powers and abilities, they can not auto-hit other characters, they are not invincible, and most rules of the universe still apply to them. Of course, your character will not be killed unless you want it to.
8. PLEASE post character in OOC so that the GMs can approve it beforehand.

Well my character is pretty old and I'm considering bringing in an even older NPC for plot jazz.  Though yours would be more 3-400, if we're talking Salem.

Here's kind of a problem I'm having, though.  His price is reasonable, I think, really.  But because it has such a long time span it really won't come into play during the game itself.  That comes off as kind of unfair to me; every other player is going to be dealing with it throughout the RP, but you're pretty much safe from it.  Even if it does come up, it'll only be the one time.  

I like the vein it's in, though.  A price of blood and fire, it works really well for a dragon based witch, I would just say that he should have to pay it more often, like monthly.  In fact, I notice that both of the witches already made have monthly consequences tied to the moon.  

EDIT: To be clear, I don't mean he should pay that exact price, but a lesser price more often, y'know?
