So today I learned that Marvel is having Brian Michael Bendis write a sequel to Mark Millar's Civil War and I have to say, I'm not happy. Far from it. If you look back, you may remember that I once said I liked the original and that still stands. It may have had its faults, but overall I did enjoy it. And I also have probably mentioned that I do like a lot of Brian Michael Bendis' work. So why am I mad about this?
Well for starters, I'm sick and tired of seeing all these superhero vs superhero stories. We got the original Civil War, Avengers vs X-Men, the new Superman v Batman movie, etc. and I've just gotten tired of seeing it. Its been overused now.
On to my next issue is the apparent reason all the heroes are sharpening their pitchforks. Apparently, they have found a way to predict crimes before they happen and some heroes think they should use this power to put the beat-down on the bad guys now and the other side believes that the punishment should come after the crime. Sound familiar? The Winter Soldier movie isn't even two years old and their already using the same concept.
Last, but not least, is Captain America. Here's a picture of the roster of the two teams:
Why the fuck is Steve on the wrong side?! Some of the criticism I've heard for the original Civil War was that Iron Man acted out of character recruiting super villains and creating that clone of Thor. Apparently they've decided to do the same with Cap. One of my favorite quotes from Captain America: Winter Soldier was "I thought the punishment usually came after the crime." That sounded like the Steve Rogers that I've known and loved to read about for years. So why the change of heart now? Yeah, fine, that was him from the cinematic universe and not the main universe version, but it sounded exactly like something he'd say. I swear, Bendis either hates Cap or has no idea how to write him and there are tons of examples of this. Ultimate Cataclysm: Kills Captain America. Age of Ultron: Kills Captain America. Ultimate Death of Spider-Man: Cap just disappears on a bleeding Spidey after the kid just took a bullet for him. You had to read Ultimate Avengers vs New Ultimates in order to find out that Cap was knocked into the Hudson by War Machine. All throughout the rest of Ultimate Spider-Man, Steve is always trying to be demeaning towards Peter, saying he's just a kid and shouldn't be a superhero. Siege: Is knocked unconscious by Green Goblin after being hit on the head by a rock because Cap was too busy just staring at explosions when he was supposed to be arresting Osborn. The list goes on.
I used to be such a big fan of Marvel, but ever since Jason Aaron's Original Sin I've noticed a steep decline in quality with every book Marvel seems to print out. It feels like everything I read is just a big middle finger to the original fans as they make all these changes that no one wants except probably all those SJWs on tumblr who claim that comics are all sexist and racist for having so many white male characters. I'm fine with Marvel wanting to diversify their universe and everything, but they aren't going about it the right way.
