I'm inclined to agree with Dawnscroll, because, um...
To balance out that rant with some rare positivism, I really liked the Urgals. Everything about the Urgals as a race and their contribution to the story was compelling, but beyond that the only characters I really liked were the old elf and his similarly decrepit dragon. Can't even remember their names though, it's been a while :/
Throughout much of the books I thought the story was mediocre to good, but at the end I kind of had an epiphany in which I realized all of those things I just listed, and in reflection I kind of tore the series to shreds in my mind for a day or two before concluding that it was overrated.
ME and MY COLLECTION OF INHERITANCE CYCLE BOOKS are offended!
*slaps you with a dragon tail*
EDIT: I realize what you're saying, but believe it or not, the cliche and simplicity of it all felt... well, refreshing. Every author tries to be so "unique and creative" that they reek of desperation. It was nice to have a story that was just a story.
