While I think it can be a good idea to push the envelope and challenge people's sensibilities, when specifically talking about writing out taboo things on this site I think it has to take a backseat to the forum rules. Introducing traumatic events or using things like rape as a tool to demonstrate evil can very easily be considered a violation of the forum rules depending on the context. And while you can pretty creatively dance around the exact subject to be tactful, obviously the more detail you go into the more visceral and offensive it becomes. So trying to go for something as shocking as possible might be something you can do in your own personal writing, its perhaps a good idea to leave certain taboo things alone here unless you're willing to be so tactful about it that you lose out on the shock value anyways.

Like its been said already, just touching upon taboo concepts purely for shock value is different from using them to affect the narrative. What makes the distinction is whether or not there are any real consequences or results. For example lets say you wanted to demonstrate how evil a particular character is so you write in a rape scene (to some degree of detail). If this never gets touched upon again all you did was create shock value. There's no actual consequences, nobody brings it up again, it becomes a scene that could just as easily be removed and the narrative wouldn't change at all. The character was already established evil, adding more to it means nothing if what you add literally changes nothing other than shocking your readers. Nobody's gonna think "oh well he's demonstrated capability/willingness to rape so he's even more evil than I thought", there's gonna think something more like "why was that in there? that's just gross/offensive/wrong/etc" because it makes no sense within its own context. This holds true for other taboo concepts beyond rape or other sexual violence, though obviously to varying degrees of backlash. Adding a scene to demonstrate how racist somebody is but never following up with that does the same thing: provides no consequences and no resolution, it could be removed without changing the narrative at all.

One "taboo" thing I see get tackled incredibly often is mental illnesses as a broad concept. How frequent it comes up in roleplays leads me to think it isn't really taboo at all, at least not for writing, but I still want to touch on that subject because I think that its very regularly done quite poorly. The thing is, "mental illness" isn't itself a mental illness. Having a character be "mentally ill" in a nondescript way makes no sense and is often written out similarly poorly. The idea of adding it into a narrative to make characters more interesting and less predictable is a fine one but often poorly executed because of the vague nature its usually touched upon with. Character A being "mentally ill" but demonstrating cartoonish levels of insanity is not an interesting nor tactful way to add the concept to the narrative. It basically turns Character A into a joke, and I'm sure all of us have seen this type of character in our roleplays before. I'm tackling specifically mental illness here but my upcoming concept applies to many taboo subjects and its that not knowing what you're writing about absolutely shows. And I think if you're gonna try to touch upon taboo subject matter just for the sake of adding one more element to your story without trying to put in any real effort to even knowing what you're talking about then that is no different from doing it purely for shock value.

Tone and Torys

"Alright, I think its about time I test myself," Tone said to himself as he picked himself up off the floor of his room, having finished his basic exercises. "None of these jobs have been challenging. I need to fight somebody stronger than me if I want to grow. The S-class wizards will do." With a grin he cracked his knuckles and took to the door. He was fortunate enough to rent a room above the Fenixtear hall so it was always took no effort to reach anybody he wanted. He kept a brisk pace as he headed downstairs into the smoking guild hall.

After realizing the smoke was from the kitchen, as per usual, Tone took the moment to identify who was present and available. So Zenith must be in the kitchen if somebody is burning something. He wouldn't be able to stand somebody messing up the place. Grasidia isn't here, Holly won't be back for a long time. And Kaden is at the bar. I'll ask him first. The dragon slayer grinned and began to approach, but before he could announce his challenge he realized that Kaden was talking with a girl. Oh man, maybe I shouldn't interrupt. Now that he was closer to the two at the bar he finally picked up the foul smell from the mug Akemi was holding. His enhanced senses as a dragon slayer made the stench even more severe for him. "Ack! What the-!?" he shouted, hacking as he covered his nose and mouth.

His presence behind Kaden and Akemi was no longer undetected now. "What the hell is that smell!?" Tone took a few steps back away from the two. "Should you be drinking that stuff at all!?" His previous intention of challenging Kaden had been completely derailed by the mysterious substance in the mug. After coughing a few more times he took another step back. "I'll come back later." He continued hacking and coughing as he bolted to the front door, running outside to get some fresh air and spare his nose the misery.

Standing near the job board, Torys giggled at the exaggerated display from Tone. Today felt like a good day to her, everyone was as lively as ever and news of the upcoming festival was exciting. But she couldn't shake the feeling that something felt off. "Huh, what could it be..." the guild master muttered aloud to herself, her gaze looking over the hall at all her guild members. As she looked over she noticed a particular seat at a particular table was empty. "Huh, that's unusual. By this time of the day Grasidia would be back from her garden..."

Grasidia

In the mountains just outside Crocus, near enough to see across the entire capital, stands a large and gothic guild hall. The home of Black Curtain. Appearing as a large, dark cathedral from the outside the truth was that it was home to the largest mage hunting guild in the country. Before its black doors stood two sentinels, men tasked with guarding the entrance and barring entry from unauthorized visitors. Of course nobody would be stupid enough to attack such an important and powerful guild, but Black Curtain has an atmosphere of exlusivity and some degree of secrecy so not just anybody can visit their hall. Only those who have been given permission by members can enter, and only with proof and a way to verify their ID.

Ascending from the base of the mountain all the way to the doors of the guild were marble stairs. A significant hike for any normal person but the mages of Black Curtain have grown used to the climb. They are supposed to be a cut above the rest after all. But arriving at the top of these stairs right now was neither a member of the guild nor any normal person, but instead it was Grasidia of Fenixtear. As she drew near the entrance one of the two guards stepped forward to interrogate her. "Hold it! Who are you and what's your business?" Grasidia stopped in front of the man, inches away from his outstretched hand. She actually stood taller than the guard, looking down on him with her piercing gaze. Yet she said nothing. After an awkward moment of silence the guard began to sweat. What's with this woman? She's so intense, he thought, gulping back his hesitation.

"If you aren't supposed to be here then I won't feel the least bit guilty to send you tumbling back down the mountain," he threatened, pulling his hand back to reach for his sword sheathed at his hip. As he grabbed the hilt and attempted to draw he felt resistance. He couldn't draw his sword. "How the..." He looked down and saw that a vine had wrapped itself around his sheath and his hand, tying them together. The vine continued to grow, winding up his arm and reaching up to his shoulder. "Excuse me," Grasidia finally let out, stepping past the entangled guard. The second one, having witnessed this from behind, concluded that she was an intruder here to attack. He wasted no time and held one of his hands out towards Grasidia, a magic circle forming in the air before it. "Blazing Su-"

The mages gathered around the main hall were minding their business, having conversations or perhaps enjoying a meal or perusing jobs. But the peace of the hall was shattered as the front doors flew open and the guard crashed to the floor. He slid to a halt next to a nearby table, where one mage was currently sitting. He looked down at his fallen comrade and was shocked to see he was completely conscious but perfectly still. Even his eyes were unmoving. The mage looked up to the open front doors to see Grasidia standing there, her hand outstretched with a large white flower blooming from her palm. She lowered her hand and the flower detached, falling to the floor, before she stepped inside the hall and began to look around. She made hardly a few steps in before another man appeared out of thin air before her.

"It was foolish of you to attack our guild, but this is as far as you go," the gruff man spoke. His clothes were little more than tattered rags and his black hair was long and beginning to gray. His beard was similarly overgrown and unkempt. He held both his hands with his palms facing Grasidia. "Now you face the head of security, Rough Dan, and your life is forfeit." The air around his hands began to vibrate, prompting Grasidia to stop approaching him. "Null Zone!" A pulse radiated through the air from his hands, passing through Grasidia with a strange feeling. "Did you really think a mage hunting guild would have any difficulty with a single intruder?"

Grasidia lifted her left hand and looked at it, flexing her fingers a few times. Of course, he's using a spell to disrupt magic, she concluded. Her eyes drifted back towards Dan. Unlucky for him. She reached forward with that hand, far faster than this head of security expected, and grabbed him by the mouth. While he could no longer speak his eyes were wide open and full of shock. It was obvious he was surprised by her strength and speed, that she could still be combat capable after being hit by his spell. Grasidia lifted him up, holding him a little off the ground. I was the fool! All these years of waiting had dulled my senses and I didn't think about the possibility that a lone intruder might actually be powerful instead of suicidal! Others around the hall were standing and at the ready now and it looked like a fight was truly going to break out. But before anyone else could intervene a flash of shadows darted across the floor of the guild hall and manifested to the side of Grasidia and Dan.

"Whoa there, we need to be more respectful to our esteemed guest," the guild master, Duncan Nythe, spoke up. "I invited this lady myself. You may recognize her, for she is Grasidia of the guild known as Fenixtear." With this she let go of Dan, letting him land on his feet. "She's a guest? But she just-" "Now now, you were just too hasty. Grasidia here is a woman of few words and there must've just been a misunderstanding at the door is all. If you take a look you'll see she didn't hurt either of the door guards." The head of security was still reluctant, but if his guild master was saying she was allowed in then it must be true. "Well, uh, my apologies then ma'am." He gave a polite bow towards Grasidia, surprising her.

"Um..." There was another pause, a complete silence as it seemed the entire guild hall was listening. "It's nothing." She looked over to Duncan now, who was letting out a sigh of relief as she glanced over but quickly began grinning. "I'm here, you got what you wanted." Duncan chuckled briefly before stepping closer and draping his arm over Grasidia's shoulders. "No no no, what I want is yet to come." This physical contact didn't last long before Grasidia brushed his arm off. "Why don't you come with me to my office and we can talk about a few things, yeah? We're gonna need to fix that ugly guild mark of yours into something more fitting..." He then turned to face the rest of the guild and raised his voice for the next part, to make sure everyone would hear. "For our newest S-class wizard!"

Various responses of shock, confusion, and anger resounded from the mages in the hall. While many here had heard of Grasidia in some shape or form it was unheard of that an inductee would be promoted to S-class right away. In Black Curtain the S-class position was highly esteemed, like with many guilds, and while everyone is expected to be strong this meant the S-class were the best of the best. There were many trials and tribulations to be even considered for the role and candidates only had the chance for promotion once a year in a grueling test. Grasidia being offered the position immediately, before she even bore the guild mark of Black Curtain yet, stirred controversy. "Follow me, if you don't mind," Duncan continued, his voice at a normal level now. As he made his way down the middle aisle of the hall and Grasidia followed his gaze looked out over the mages that were all staring back, settling on one in particular.

Markovis, a veteran of the guild, would feel a creeping sensation as a thin shadow snaked its way up his body and settled behind his left ear. "Markovis," he would hear whisper. "I have a specific task for you. Over the coming days I need you to keep an eye on this woman, Grasidia. She is not as she seems, but I think you might be one of our best candidates for gaining her trust." Duncan's gaze averted from Markovis now but the voice in his ear continued. "She is a very valuable asset but she is also very dangerous. The secrets she contains could change the course of history not just for our guild but for the entire kingdom. We must contain her while we find a way to get her information, but we cannot let her know that we are keeping her. If she were to feel too threatened or perhaps unsure of us then I don't think that even I could stop her from fleeing. For now just be kind to her but never let your guard down."

The shadow behind his ear began to retreat back down to the floor and disappearing almost as soon as it reached. Grasidia was none the wiser of the secret orders, even though her senses were extraordinary she didn't stand a chance to hear those whispers over all the other noise of protest around the guild. Perhaps that was Duncan's intention with making a scene of Grasidia. But even without any of that knowledge it was by pure chance that as Grasidia was looking around the guild and glancing over the faces of what will be her new comrades she locked eyes with Markovis. That's strange, he looks just like that one boy, she thought to herself. I wonder if they are related...
No fun reviews today.

@Lunarlord34 Akemi is accepted, but remove the bit from the end that says she can use light magic without the Take Over. It kinda defeats the concept of the magic if she can access her Take Over magic without... ya know... taking over.

@BladeSS4 Unfortunately, you have been long unresponsive in the Discord and the potential position your character would've taken has been filled. I tried to be patient and give you the opportunity to make changes but we weren't going to wait forever. If we begin accepting new players again then I will reach out to you, but for now we are full.

@Aeolian I need clarification on a few things. Can Noah use his keys while in his "spirit" form? The history doesn't explain where or when he would've learned this spirit transformation magic either so I'd like clarity there too. As a B-rank mage he should only be able to have one Gate open at a time so I'd like you to add that information somewhere for posterity. I'm a little apprehensive to him having five golden keys off the bat, and so many keys in general, because his history implies he got them all from his mother. Someone with this many keys would surely be a big deal and its kinda glossed over. I'm iffy on this because of that, but if you make the changes I've asked for then I'll allow it. Just remember how difficult and magic consuming it was in the canon to use this magic, considering his heart condition.

@samreaper
@Sanguine Rose Looks good, move him over.

Grasidia and Torys

The tan woman was briefly surprised by the young girl that sat down next to her whom immediately smiled at her and began writing something down. It was strange but at this point it was an expectation of human behavior. But the girl kept staring after she finished writing and after an awkward moment she smacked the table and began venting her frustrations about older humans and their attitudes. I suppose she wouldn't think I'm too much older than her, Grasidia thought, But I have no idea how to relate to this. Well, maybe to the evil... The older lady shrugged before crossing her arms over her chest. "I wouldn't know," she spoke up, still unsure how to respond to Bebe's struggle. Young humans probably wanted to be physically comforted in some way, but Grasidia couldn't bring herself to even try. "Uh... perhaps... you should learn for yourself."

That should help her, surely. Grasidia knew that humans had a wanderlust, much like she did in the past, so the best way to know the truth would be to experience it for oneself. Though hopefully there wouldn't be too much truth in whatever journey this human would undertake. Meanwhile, over at the bar, Torys was pouring herself a drink when Kaden approached her about the ANP job. She finished her drink before glancing over at the quest in his hands before pouting and taking up her glass. "Whatever you do, make sure Avedis pays up for the window on top of the rewards he gives you kids," she told him, pausing to take a sip of the hard liquor. "Don't forget it, I'm sure he'll try to weasel his way out of paying..." She turned her attention to Lavinia, grinning as the girl gave her evil overlord spiel. "I'll handle it, but you can guide yourselves from here." After the ANP team left she continued with her drink and managed to finish it before Gwen inquired about another quest.

"Oh, be careful with this one," Torys told her. "I've heard that other guilds have failed this quest several times and that's why it has been bumped up to S-class. You're all strong but remember to stay safe, okay?" She set the empty glass down and pulled a folded piece of paper from behind the counter. "Cocoa Village is a relatively new village so I had to get a new map to find it. The trains will only take you to Clover and you will have to walk or get a wagon the rest of the way. And no, I'm not paying for your trip." She handed the map over to Gwen. "I don't think even Obsidian Kite will take you all the way there in their airships, but they can surely get you to Clover just as well. Your choice." With that out of the way she gave the team a big smile. "I'm sure you three are tough enough to handle this just fine."

Tone

As the ANP team would be heading out the door, Kaden would find that the door would open just before he reached it. Standing in his way now was Tone Soretto, another new member of the guild that had joined within the last few weeks. While his immediate expression was fairly stern and stoic, once he realized that Kaden was in his way and the two were blocking each other from the doorway his eyes widened. "Uh, whoops. My bad," he spoke up, stepping aside to let the other mages go through. While they were on their way out for a mission Tone was actually just returning, as evidenced by the rucksack he had slung over his shoulder. Once the ANP team went by he walked into the guild hall, though staring at the strange machine that followed his comrades as they left. Only after he closed the door did his attention return to his guild and he could focus on the business before him.

Tone took a quick glance around and found Torys at the bar, just finishing up talking with Gwen and a couple others, and so he approached. "Hey old lady," he greeted Torys, before turning his gaze to Gwen, Holly, and Zen. "Sup girls." He didn't consider that perhaps he should've gave Zenith a more individual greeting. "So boss, I finished up that quest in Magnolia. Turned out the dog was actually alive and just on the other side of town. Real easy stuff." He dropped the sack from his shoulder to the ground and briefly rummaged through it, eventually withdrawing a small coin pouch. "Here's your cut." Torys began waving her hands frantically, refusing his offer. "No need, no need! I don't need the money from your quests, you need it more than me," she explained, seemingly surprising Tone. "Oh..."

Despite the fact this wasn't his first mission, and accordingly not the first time this exact conversation has happened, Torys was starting to realize that this may become a trend. Tone put the coin purse back into his sack and then hoisted it back over his shoulder. "Well then, have you heard anything about Draco Clamor since I was gone?" She had also deduced that this would be a trend. "Unfortunately I have not. I've told you before that if I ever hear anything I'll let you know." The young man seemed disappointed at the news and shook his head. Another day, another lack of any leads. "Oh well, thanks for looking out for me." Torys couldn't help but wonder if he truly heard the words she was saying, but at least he seemed to understand. "No worries..." He then looked back at the three mages next to him. "You all heading out too? Like the others?"

This will be my secondary character. I have reviewed him and approve him. Fair and balanced.
Grasidia

She continued looking over the calling card in her hand as she turned back into the alley, lost in thought as she instinctively returned to the guild. Grasidia's concentration was only broken by the sound of shattering glass, causing her to redirect her gaze forward but she just missed the action. All she could tell was that something broke one of the front windows to the guild hall. In the past this had literally never happened, but in the last few weeks it has happened a couple times so while it did startle her it posed no real concern. Surely nobody would be attacking a guild hall full of mages in the most populated city in the country. She approached the broken window, making sure to hide the Black Curtain card by slipping it underneath her left forearm sleeve. Peering through the glass she saw a strange device had been thrown into the hall and it appeared oddly sentient, already on its feet and walking towards her guildmates.

With a sigh she continued past the window towards the door. I will think on this later, she ultimately decided on her issue, regaining her resolve and entering the guild hall. She could see that most everyone was present, or at least everyone she vaguely knew. But oddly enough at the same time Grasidia had came in from the front door the guild master, Torys, appeared behind the bar counter. In her childlike form she was only a head and shoulders taller than the counter, an amusing sight for the uninitiated for sure, but her appearance may have surprised Marduk as he surely believed he was the only one behind the counter. "We'll be charging Avedis double for this," she pouted, announcing her presence. "He didn't even wait for anyone to accept the quest before damaging my property." It was at this point that Luke had stepped forward with a quest in-hand, requesting permission to take it. Torys leaned against the counter to get a closer look at the paper, squinting her eyes to help read it over, before nodding in approval. "It looks like you'll need a few friends for this one, but I believe you can do it."

Grasidia briefly contemplated telling Torys about her situation but quickly discarded the thought. It would just be another avenue of danger. Instead she made her way towards her favorite table. It was her favorite because she found one particular chair at it to be the most comfortable to her, and when the guild was smaller it didn't often have anyone else sitting around it. But today, and recently for that matter, there was a small group of mages she has yet to memorize the names of drinking and making merry at it. And one of them was sitting in her favorite seat. The tall woman approached from behind, an emotionless and intimidating stare burrowing into the back of the young mage's head. His friends soon noticed her hovering over him and grew nervous. Even the new guys all knew who Grasidia was. One of the S-class mages that fought the dragon. They all became riddled with anxiety, expecting someone like her to perhaps treat them in the way Lavinia might.

"Excuse me," Grasidia started, though she couldn't quite put to words what she wanted to say further. To the young men in front of her they didn't interpret this as a pause of deliberation, but instead of intimidation. "Oh, sorry, I didn't realize this was your spot, Grasidia," the mage panicked, practically jumping out of his seat along with his friends. "I'll be out of your way!" It was a classic misunderstanding where the unknowing interpreted Grasidia's silence for anger rather than awkwardness, but it worked to her advantage as now the whole table was hers. She shrugged and took her seat before scanning the room. One of the newer mages, Alina she believed, was harassing the cat-boy Jasper. Grasidia quickly found herself fond of the cat, perhaps because he wasn't a human despite appearances and thus her programming allowed it. But with so many people here it would be difficult for her to approach so she made a mental note to try and catch Jasper alone later. The new S-class mage was recruiting Lavinia to escort the strange, talking machine that destroyed the window earlier. Holly, Zenith, and Gwen seemed to be gathering for a quest as well. In general it all seemed busy. Perhaps I should take on a quest as well before I no longer have the choice...
Grasidia

As the two rounded the corner out of the alley and back into the street, Duncan looked over to Grasidia with a smirk. "Ya know, you don't look like I thought you were gonna look," he told her, prompting a raised eyebrow from Grasidia. "I did a little bit of research into your guild for the last couple weeks and I was under a completely different impression about you, Grasidia." The man's strange invitation was already concerning but now he seemed especially suspicious. "I'm not sure what you mean," she spoke up but Duncan didn't elaborate any further. He only chuckled to himself briefly. The two continued down the street in silence for another moment before Duncan stopped. "I've talked with several witnesses to the... ahem, dragon attack in Era. I even talked to my friend, Ajax. We're both obligated to assist the Magic Council in any way we can, you see..."

Grasidia stopped next to him. "One of my duties is to investigate guilds like yours. Suspicious guilds that appear one day with powerful mages? Always catches my interest. The dragon you fought wasn't really a dragon I've been told, but I'm sure you already knew that..." Now he crossed his arms over his chest and faced Grasidia. "I was also told that a particular member of Fenixtear was an Etherious demon. Would you know anything about that?" Grasidia's eyes widened as she realized what exactly was going on. This man somehow knew. Her eyes narrowed once the shock subsided and she held the bouquet of flowers down to her side. "None in our guild is a demon," she told him, an aura of danger and threat practically radiating from her skin. "Do not... test my patience."

Duncan's lips formed a confident smirk, his eyes refused to avert from her gaze. "Ah, I like that look," he said. "I always wanted to be with a tough woman. But you're not really a woman, are you?" Grasidia felt something inside her tick, an instinct being triggered. On a complete reflex she grabbed Duncan by the shirt with her free hand and whipped him around, slamming him into the wall and pinning him there. He seemed briefly surprised but unharmed, and his smug grin very quickly returned. "See? This is what I was talking about." "Be silent! If you continue insulting me and my guild I will... I will put you down." Her threat only earned another chuckle. "Oh no, not like this you won't. Why don't you transform and then give it a try?" Now Grasidia was getting really worked up. She couldn't stop herself from scowling but she used every fiber of her being to not strangle this man. "Come on, I've killed your kind before. I know this isn't your true form. Did you really think you could hide among us with your evil plans and nobody would notice? If you let me go before you transform then you won't stand a chance."

Every one of her instincts were screaming at her to kill this man. The passerby in the street were beginning to stop and stare at the scene and she knew it. Grasidia had to physically strain to not strike out at him. After a moment of silence she threw Duncan to the ground, but not particularly hard. He landed on his butt, a look of genuine shock on his face. And the second he looked back up at Grasidia she threw the bouquet of flowers right at his mouth. "Don't follow me," she told him, already stomping her way back towards the guild. She hardly made it a few steps before she noticed a strange shadow dart across the ground past her, stopping in front of her. And from this shadow emerged Duncan, blocking her path. "Man, I was really wrong about you," he admitted, though Grasidia tried to walk past. Instead he held his arm out, catching her and preventing her movement. A normal person wouldn't have hoped to stop her with just one arm, but now it was Grasidia' turn to be surprised again at his strength. "Listen," he began, his tone no longer arrogant and his volume hushed so only she could hear.

"I've never seen an Etherious like you before. Not only do you look so human but you've been working with humans for years. You even refused to attack me. Your existence is an anomaly, and I admit that I was wrong in my assumptions. But you are a demon and I can't just let you go." With his other hand he procured a white calling card with a symbol of a black stage curtain on both sides. He presented this card to Grasidia. "Join my guild, Black Curtain. You can continue to help humans and I can keep a better watch on you." "No." "I'll give you some time to decide, but if you refuse then I won't keep your secret any longer. You will always be a danger to the people of Fiore. Ajax told me that you were different but I didn't believe him, now I do. But my obligations still remain. If your secret gets out, or the Council finds out who you are, then you will surely be killed. Possibly by me." Grasidia took a step back and walked around his outstretched arm, refusing the calling card in his other hand. "And, of course, Fenixtear would be punished for hiding you."

This was enough to make her stop. "If you come work for me, nobody will ever find out about you." This time Duncan took Grasidia's hand and placed the card in her open palm; she made no attempt to resist. "Think about it. But before you use this time to run and hide, just know that I will find you." She looked down at the card in her hand, confirming that it looked the same on both faces. Then she looked over to Duncan. "Don't get me wrong, I still want to destroy you and your kind," he continued. "But... killing you isn't justice. Your existence is an opportunity that we cannot pass up. I will be seeing you again, Grasidia." With his final line he faded into darkness, returning to his shadow beneath his feet and then zooming off down the street.

Now she was alone again, with this Black Curtain card in her hand. What am I going to do? she wondered as she began slowly walking back towards the guild.
