Bio

Hey all, JB here.

I'm a DM for a large number of games here on RPG, as well as a player in several others. Many of the games I run are overly complex, or they involve Dungeons and Dragons (which is also overly complex!).

I work 40+ hours a week, and am the proud father of two tiny terrors named Chibi and Chibette and married to my beautiful Wifey. As such, I am quite busy more often than not. I typically write 2-5 paragraphs per reply and try to maintain an excellent level of grammar. If you noticed me glancing at your profile, I probably was looking to see if you would be a good match for my RPing style. Even if I didn't send a PM to you, feel free to send one back!

I enjoy 1x1 RPs and small groups. I'm fond of medieval, steampunk, and futuristic settings, and I'll jump into romance, adventure, and slice of life RPs fairly quickly, although supernatural (vampires, werewolves, etc) RPs get old for me pretty quickly. If you're looking for an RP partner and I've glanced at your profile, then I'm most likely willing to give it a shot, but decided against PMing you because I'm actually kinda shy. But I'm always looking for a new friend!

Please feel free to say hi at any time!

Shaddup...

The light and noises filtered in, attempting to interrupt the snores of the final member of the crew as she lay on the slab. Her mind was elsewhere as she dreamed, a story of valor and bravery wherein, of course, she was the sole heroine. Her warhammer blazed with glory as it cleaved through a dozen angry wargs, her own dire wolf companion Sven pressing her forward. Sven leapt over a chasm filled with fire, and several of the pursuing canines tumbled into the gaping maw of the abyss, yelping in pain as the flames consumed them. Mara chuckled as she turned to watch a handful of the wargs make it over the canyon, snarling and snapping their jaws at her. A primordial word "Skryvat" was uttered, and her stony visage began to subtly change, matching the shade of the earth around her. The dire wolf rounded a bend in the road and they leapt into the trees, hiding as the wargs blew past them.

"Dumbass mutts, ya Sven?" she muttered, a grin widening across her lips. Her eyes fluttered open to see a half dozen people standing around in a room. Her head felt heavier than normal, and she was clad in naught but a robe. Beneath them somewhere came the sounds of grinding gears, and she caught the tail end of a conversation about an escape. Mara lifted her head, and something caught. Her hand moved to investigate, and she felt a tube protruding from the spot where her neck met her skull. Grasping hold of the tube, she yanked with all her might, wincing at the minor pain as a clear fluid gushed over the back of her head. For a moment, she felt like collapsing backwards onto the slab she had awakened from as the world went numb, but as she felt the wound on the back of her head, it seemed to close on its own. The dizziness dissipated and she sat up, looking around at her compatriots. "I ain't be tethered down fer long," she growled, finally finding her feet under her as she stood up. "Ya wants to escape? Less do it then."

Mara's eyes closed as she felt the air around her, her thoughts drifting to the advice of her father. She nodded slowly, and without opening her eyes, stepped to the left. Her hand was outstretched as she felt the air flowing over her fingertips, and then her eyes opened as a grin appeared. Suddenly, a fist shot out towards the wall, smashing a great hole in it. Her foot followed, crashing through the wall and leaving gap about the size of her fist. She glanced through the crevasse she had created to see a void on the other side. "Huh. Looks like night out in the country."

She stepped back from the wall and glanced around at the others. "Name's Mara. Let's kick some walls down, ya? Who be with me?!"

Ryobi let out a sigh of relief as nothing dangerous happened as he entered. The comm could still be a trap, although it was likely difficult to subtly rig it for anything more than a minor shock. More likely at this point, it would be used either as a way for the other side to communicate with them, or it was left in a hurry. That, or it was a way for the enemy to pinpoint their position.

Ryobi glanced around the room. Medical equipment was scattered around, most of which was beyond Ryobi's limited area of expertise. He had received minor training as a field medic, not as a doctor. Still, nothing immediately screamed out of the ordinary about the room. The comm device seemed normal as well. Ryobi picked it up, but didn't touch the power switch. "Let's get someplace safe," he called back to Jan. "Somewhere other than here. Maybe there's a message or some other purpose, but I don't want to stick around next to a homing beacon."

Did... did we win? Kiki stumbled forward from the brush as the goblins began running. The barbarian had commanded them to stop, and it looked as if they had given up. Kiki sighed in relief, although the exertion almost made her pass out. Damned goblins...

It took her a moment to understand what else she was seeing. One of the two horses seemed to be completely butchered, its head separated from its body. What kind of monster would do such a thing?! Obviously, the only people here capable of such vicious barbarism had to be the goblins. Kiki's eyes narrowed at the closest one before she turned away. She had been given a suggestion to tie up the unconscious goblin nearby, so she did so, relieving the goblin of its bow and quiver and emptying its pockets of any other loot in the meantime. She then dragged the goblin back to the rest of the group, plopping it down next to the butchered horse.

"We're not planning to babysit a group of goblins, are we?" Kiki asked. "I say the first person who gives us full information on the owners of these horses and where they are gets to live. The others... well, you did attack us, after all. Maybe next time you'll pick your targets more carefully. Oh, there won't be a next time, will there?" The rapier hung by Kiki's side, dripping with the blood of several goblins as she glared at those nearby. "I suggest you start talking."

Claimed Loot: 1 shortbow, 1 quiver with 20 arrows, 1 elven arrow.
Requested Loot: Poison vial and the other two elven arrows if no one else uses a bow effectively.
Katia hummed with annoyance. "I don't see why everyone thinks we're in a hurry. We just got here. We have no real goal except to explore. If we can get back to our world, great! Until then, why would we not enjoy ourselves?" She gave a shrug as she pondered her next option. Her allies definitely were not being conducive to the plan. Even Cesar who had suggested just the thing she was hoping for had immediately retracted his suggestion.

"Your insistence, Sir Gnome, makes me think I should hold onto these gems. However, you have given me little reason to distrust you, except for your sheer lack of understanding of the term 'stealth.' As such, I shall defer to the group on this one." Katia approached the window and opened it, dropping an orb next to the building and throwing the other as far as possible. She turned around and scowled at the group, obviously not happy about the decision. "You owe me a Really Big Crow. Or something better," she muttered as she crossed her arms in a pout.
Welcome to Waterdeep

This campaign will initially originate within this City of Splendors, but will eventually traverse the many expanses of the Forgotten Realms.

We will be utilizing the 5e rule set, starting at 5th level. Stats will be fettered to a 20 point buy. No magic items at the start, but will be rife throughout this homebrew. You can have any starting non-magical gear you desire (just remember encumberance) plus an additional 250 gold.

Any and all races, alignments, and Unearthed Arcana are allowed, but the CS, in its entirety, must be approved by moi.

Character sheets are to be made using mythweaver and PM'ed to me. Once approved, please post the CS url link in the interest check below.

For maps, I am still anguishing which best visual method to employ.

Combat will be mostly conducted in the OOC, but you can always summarize your action in a post, if you so choose, for literary flava flav. IC posts can span a few lines to multiple paragraphs, if ye so desire, but I do request that once every 1-5 days (out of combat), one either posts in the IC, or just explain what your character is doing in a particular encounter in the OOC, if you are not able to do so. In specific encounters, I may be firm and require a strict IC post (mostly for verbal exchanges), before advancing our tale.

Ideally, once we have finalized a total of 6-8 players, including my co-DM, @JBRam2002, I will start the IC.

Anything else? Just submit your inquiries, complaints, or comments below.

See the previous interest check for further details.

If your character has been approved and you feel comfortable posting it in the Characters tab, please do so.

We are going to start out at level 5, so your backstory can be designed with that in mind, but keep it purposefully hidden from the other PCs. With that limitation in mind, feel free to have an extensive backstory; I WILL incorporate your backstory and make it relevant to our campaign. If you don't want to write much, then we will just tie you in with forward progression instead of backstory integration.

Maps will vary from Theater of the Mind to Roll20 constructions.

To flesh out your character, please PM me any or all of these answers (or not, and munch on them while we progress through the campaign) with a brief concept (minimum of 1-3 lines) of your backstory. These questions serve to help flesh out your character to me.

How old is your character?
What would somebody see at first glance (i.e. height, weight, skin color, eye color, hair color, physique, race, and visible equipment)?
Does your character have any significant personal items?
What additional attributes would be noticed upon meeting the character (i.e. speech, mannerisms)?
Does your character have any personality quirks (i.e. anti-social, arrogant, optimistic, paranoid)?
Does your character have any distinguishing marks (birth-marks, scars, deformities)?
Where was your character born? Where were you raised? By who?
Are your parents still alive? If one or both of your parents are dead when and how did they die?
Do you have any siblings? Have any of them are alive? What do your siblings do? If any siblings have died, how?
Is your character married? Does your character have children?
What social class is your character from?
How has their upbringing affected their world view? How did your character get started in their chosen class?
Does your character have any heroes or inspirational figures?
Is your character religious? Is your character guided by a prophecy? What is your character’s view on magic?
Has your character ever served in the military? Has your character ever been arrested? What for?
How did your character arrive in Waterdeep?
Has your character ever crossed anyone? Does your character have any enemies?
What are your character’s goals in life? How important is the accumulation of wealth?
If your character died tomorrow what would they be remembered for?
Where did your character learn or train their skills?
Why does your character adventure? How does your character view his/her role as an adventurer?
How does your character get along with others?
Is there anything that your character hates? Is there anything that your character fears?

Realism left when magic and non-humans became a thing.

This is true, which is why I'm glad we aren't using Pathfinder's method of gaining only your level in HP on a long rest. 5 HP when your max is 65? Takes a while to rest up from that.
Greetings, again! Just another morsel to much on.

Short recovery rest will take an hour. You can spend Hit Die on short and long rests. But...

How would we feel if long rests only rejuvenated half your Hit Die and not your HP?

The rule would be literally thus:

Characters can regain half their HD or equal to their proficiency bonus whichever is higher, rounded down, on completing a long rest, 8 hours.

Remember, potions are available in the city.

Please tally your response below. Thanks and Mods bless.

Personally, I think the resting mechanics in 5e are way too lenient. There's almost no danger and no wound that a good night's sleep can't fix. A 250 HP barbarian gets KO'd? Ah, just rest it off and you're back to full health. There is zero realism with this method.

I would prefer this modification, and have used it in my own games before. It instills a sense of danger and requires the party to be cautious instead of always charging face-first into danger. However, it also requires the DM to recognize this, and to make healing options more readily available.
