Prince arrived early to Wertham Community Centre hoping to use the extra time to make his mark on the place. He waltzed into the locker room after receiving his orange jumpsuit from their probation officer, Tony. "Huh. Much cleaner than I thought it'd be. Well, I can change that." He dropped his bookbag filled with all of his materials on the floor in front of the first locker and started to undress. He kept his boxer briefs and undershirt on and put the jumpsuit over them. "Now, to personalize this baby." He said with a devious smile. He rummaged through his bookbag to take out his purple spray paint and painted his personal tag diagonally across his locker. They weren't actually assigned lockers, but he wanted it known now that this was his and to leave something behind for the future delinquents to marvel at.

As soon as he finished his masterpiece, Henry entered the room with a sigh. "I can't believe I'm here." He looked up to see one of his bar patrons and somewhat friend doing what he did best. "But I'm not surprised at all that you're here. I'm just surprised it didn't happen sooner. Hello mate."

Prince turned to see his favorite bartender. "Yeah, they finally caught me, Dawson. I heard about what happened at the bar. If I was there that night you know I would've handled it for you."

"I appreciate it, Prince, but then you probably would've ended up with jail time instead of community service. It's only six months and I didn't lose my job, so we'll at least have a place to wind down after work ends each day." Henry walked to the locker across from Prince's and started changing. He would've gotten a locker closer to his, but he didn't want his to have Prince's name all over it. "I wonder what the rest of the crew will be like."

"Not nearly as cool as us, I can tell you that." Prince answered with a laugh.

Tony the Probation Worker

Tony was in his office annoyed that he had to deal with another batch of young pieces of excrement. He strongly doubted that he would be able to last six months with this group. He was looking over their files and he was concerned for his sanity and his life. He had requested that the council send him a partner, but they couldn't afford to. They really just didn't want to allocate the funds.

He took out his phone and looked at his screensaver of him and his fiancée, Sally. Being with her was the only thing keeping him sane in this world. He was staring at her so long and deeply that he didn't notice the first delinquent come in and hover over him. "Wow. She's gorgeous. Lucky man right here."

"Keep your eyes in your sockets. Didn't anyone teach you not to invade people's privacy?"

"Yes, but you were zoned out, or zoned in. I'm just here for my jumpsuit. Prince, reporting for duty."

Tony sighed before turning his screen off and getting up to grab an orange folded jumpsuit. He tossed it at him. "The tagger, right? If I catch you tagging the property you're cleaning it up. Got it?"

"Yes, sir. I'll be on my best behavior." Prince said with an earnest expression, but with his fingers crossed behind his back.

"Just head to the locker room already." Tony was not falling for his bullshit.

Once everyone was outside and lined up at the railing overlooking the harbor, Tony put on his nice face and treated them like he cared about them and why they were here.

"Alright! One way or another something in your life brought you here. The world has written you off as troublemakers or worse, but here you have a chance to prove them wrong and make something of yourselves. You'll be giving back to your community these next six months. Cleaning the Center and the surrounding area, helping out at events, and bettering the community and who knows? Maybe you'll influence others on the same path as you so they can turn things around before they end up here as well. I'm not your babysitter so I won't be breathing down your necks during this time. I'm trusting you not to kill each other or do anything unseemly while you're here. If I do have any problems with any of you, I'll be reporting you to the Council and you may receive jail time instead. Any questions?"

Reserved and very polite in public. Tries very hard to be soft and kind and ladylike. Most teachers would consider her a good influence and model student. Most classmates would consider her boring and uptight.

There’s a more honest and rough young woman beneath the public face. Someone who doesn’t bite her tongue, someone who doesn’t care about what anyone else thinks. Someone truly angry about having to be showed down over and over again, even by herself. That part of Kassandra defended herself, drew blood, got her stuck in community service, and may yet set her free.

Goals and aspirations

Kassandra wants to get out of the UK and go back to Jamaica. While she tells people she just wants to go to university in the country of her birth, she secretly hopes to make something of herself as a singer. She knows it’s a child’s dream, that it’s just as likely to leave her poor and begging on the street than to be successful. But it’s been the only thing she feels is her own desire – not something she’s been told she wants, or should be or should do.

It was her mother’s birthday and her father was spending the day at work. He had already called to let Kassy know she’d be alone, as if it hadn’t been that way for 4 years. Kassy had been planning to join the amateur night singing contest at the bar for months. But that phone call assuaged the guilt she felt for keeping it a secret.

She chose a lovely, smoky jazz tune that she’d been practicing for months. It was earnest and heartful, with the raw sound of a talent untamed. But it wasn’t quite a legendary triumph. Song

Maybe it was the choice of song, too slow and moody for the location, maybe she rushed a few notes. Maybe the crowd was brought down instead of up. She got second place, a small cash prize, and several coupons for free meals. First place would have been amazing, but all in all, she was satisfied.

The trouble didn’t start until afterward. A group of frequent patrons, several beers past drunk, started to jeer and tease Kassy while she waited for the bus outside the bar that evening. Despite her begging to be left alone, one of them reached out for her. To touch her, to hurt her – she’d never know.

She doesn’t remember consciously choosing to throw a punch, or having a plan for if it failed. But she swung and hit – and then kept hitting in fury and fear. The police arrived to break up the “fight”. Unfortunately, not many people were willing to stand in defense of the young woman with bloodied knuckles. Despite being the victim of harassment, she was considered the instigator of the brawl. The men got a harsh sentence, but Kassy’s record was still marked.

Background

Kassandra was 8 when she and her parents, Neville and Kaya emigrated to the UK. She has warm-tinged memories of sunny school days, Sunday school, plucking fresh mangoes and frog bananas from the trees. Singing in the rain, swimming in the ocean. Staying up too late, listening to her parents argue about money, and children and hold each other tight afterward.

Moving to the UK felt like some kind of punishment to the young woman. Wet but not warm, cloudy on a good day – and full of strangers. Classmates that teased her for her accent, or being heavy, or anything else they could find. Her parents said the uneasiness would stop, that she’d make friends, that she’d stop being sick and miserable each winter. It happened to her mother, too, every now and again. Just a little winter cough. Maybe a little worse this year.

It was still there in the spring. Allergies? Dust? Too much work – maybe avoid stress? Hard to do with a mortgage and a daughter entering high school in a year.

By the summer, Kaya had begun to lose weight in a way that finally caused doctors alarm. The chemo started in autumn. The excuses started before the snow began again. “...Stage 4... Metastasized-” “Exacerbated by-” “If we had only caught it earlier…”

Words that were ultimately empty by the time Kaya passed, leaving behind a devastated husband and an unmoored daughter. The two of them proved to be birds of a feather – but in two separate trees. Neville threw himself into work. Kassy threw herself into school. Neither of them quite knew what to do with the hole of grief in their lives and hearts.

Their relationship was already strained, but it shattered once Kassy was arrested. They haven’t spoken since her sentencing.

Vivacious Vocals: Kassy’s voice has been given an extraordinary quality of force. If she yells loud enough, she can shatter glass and crack the earth. She can also throw her voice to make her words seem to come from other places, or people. Finally, she can simply make what she’s saying seem ‘important’ – drawing focus like a singer’s spotlight. JJ likes to make jokes, colorful or not. Most are masochistic to his situations, but he still holds onto that spark of good when things are rough. He makes friends easy because of this, or enemies of the more somber type. You can kick him down and he will get up laughing. Spilt milk aside, he does harbor a grudge against authority. His failings at 'conquering' this fact lead him into depressed states too. Bipolar tendencies seep through his facade when stressed.

Goals and aspirations

JJ is a spur of the moment guy, so as long as you can secure the next hour, day, week, he is moldable. The lad hasn't seen much long-term success in his life to be much else.

CV

Construction usually, JJ's uncle was a carpenter by trade and JJ followed suit to have some spending money. Not that he stuck to it or excelled at it. He attended a tradeschool in the 10th grade then proceeded to drop out of formal education. He likes fractions and metrics, but beyond that he's more of a hands-on student. He knows how to hotwire cars, his step-father is a mechanic. Mechanic in general are familiar to him. He's a jack instead of a master, but perhaps he's never focused on anything. Was also a field&track athlete, which comes in handy when you have to run from the rozza.

Crime

A little B&E, a little petty theft, some vandalism, and a lot of Gta joyrides. JJ can hardly stand aside when he sees an opportunity just sitting there. Crimes of the moment, hardly any forethought to them, hence why the system deduced a more reformat plan of action against the hectic youth. 6-months could fix him they think.

Background

JJ's life was a mundane existence of a single child in a home of hard workers. His mother was a maid and his father a mechanic. While his grades and behavior were well to do for the most part, he had a very unsensible level of anticipation and recklessness. This would manifest later in his criminal behavior. The rush of crimes and the darker side of things lured him in very quickly. By the time he was 16 he had almost given up entirely on schooling and athletics in favor of a life of fun in his mind. Cigarettes, booze, and such where always around, tho fear of harder things keeps him safe-ish.

Perhaps it was a lack of focus or evidence, but he did not want to follow his parents footsteps of toil and grind for meager takings. JJ's rambunctious behavior would increasingly get him caught and reprimanded. Not so suddenly he was to be the bad chip off the block. Always he seemed willing to cross the line, and for what? A buzz of crime, a high of spree? Disillusioned he was of the consequences of his actions, and still is partly to this day.

Power

Flashbang: JJ can emit concentrated phosphoric chemical cocktails out of his pores at will(or at random if emotionally unfocused). Soft colorful flames that flick and linger to full on denotating concoctions expressed through strikes of the limbs. The color, intensity, and production of secondary chemicals aka smoke can vary as he learns to control the power.

Skills & Abilities

JJ was an athlete in his teens, a field and track aficionado. He has learned basic mechanics and construction trades from his elders so far. Bit of a muscian when it comes to percussion.

Interested, and as a power I was thinking of a null. Voiding out abilities seems a bit iffy but it could be curtailed with lack of control over its intensity and frequency. My other idea is a pyro, a staple really.

The only reason I'm iffy about a void power is that it'd potentially make conflicts with enemies down the line too easy rather than them having to find ways to overcome them. And what would be the personality/desire that would manifest that ability?

But I'm cool with a pyro.
