T H E S T O R Y S O F A R... Doreen Allene Green has always been a bit of an oddball. Born with a squirrel tail, she found it difficult to fit in with others. Even in a world of superheroes, kids are and can still be total dicks. A family doctor declared that she wasn't a "mutant", but even he couldn't explain the squirrelly features that Doreen had. Well, thanks, doc. It's always helpful to tell a kid that you don't know what makes you "you". You, your bushy tail, superhuman attributes and... the ability to communicate with squirrels?! Yup, you've heard that right. After Doreen saved the life of a neighborhood squirrel from a vicious dog, things got a little weird, and a little heroic, too. Grateful for her help, the squirrel, known as Monkey Joe, encouraged the youth to use her abilities to help others like she had done for him. The words stuck in Doreen's head. Heroism—being a hero. Golly gee, it sounded fun. And so, with Monkey Joe now at her side, Doreen set out for a heroic life of "kickassery". She found herself idolizing the heroes that she read about online in articles. Captain America, among other heroes. The greats that constantly changed the world (for better or worse). Doreen wanted to be with them. To be by their side, kicking evil villain butt right along with them. Problem is, when you're stuck in nowhereville, there isn't much butt kicking to go around—just some small town fry. But, hey, every great hero had to start somewhere, and if keeping the local store from being robbed is her start, then so be it! P L O T ( S ) & G O A L ( S ) P L O T ( S ) & G O A L ( S ) Put simply, I'm a sucker for Squirrel Girl. I'm totally not a one-trick SG lord in Rivals, no siree. You've got the wrong roleplayer, I tell ya. Anyway, Squirrel Girl has largely been a joke character. She exists to be "unbeatable", defeating the likes of Doctor Doom, Juggernaut, Thanos, and even Galactus. What I want to do is pull away from that aspect and focus upon a more realistic version of Squirrel Girl (at least, "comic realistic"). The jokes will still be there; it'll just be less zany cheese and throwaway gags. She may think she is unbeatable, but I don't want this to full of "press 1 and instantly win the game/battle" story beats. So, to combat this, I'm going to start all the way at the beginning. Marvel Super-Heroes (Vol. 2) #8-like, wherein Squirrel Girl is a dumb kid and her squirrels trying to be jumpstart heroes. Essentially, what I intend on is a zero-to-hero type storyline, wherein Squirrel Girl works her way up to the ranks of the heroes she has grown to idolize. As for other story beats or plot points that might come into play, I'm thinking: - Is Squirrel Girl a mutant? This is left ambiguous; the writers say she is "distinct from a mutant" and that her genes had been modified by unknown means, but regardless people still debate if she is a mutant or a mutate. I think it'd be a fun thing to explore perhaps with a mutant/X-Men player(s). - Will Squirrel Girl join any organization? Squirrel Girl has been in quite of a lot of teams or initiatives. The Great Lakes, US Avengers, etc. Perhaps an apprenticeship is down the line since she spends her time idolizing superheroes. - Is Monkey Joe marked for death? Perhaps. Tippy Toe and the others are bound to show up, but whether or not our favorite squirrel pal will be crushed to death is up in the air. It could work for a great cliffhanger issue. These are just some of the ideas I've had bouncing around in my head. I'm open to others, though I've never been big on DC so forgive me if your ideas are DC-inspired and I look at you clueless. |
