Bio

Current GM of World of Light. When it comes to writing, there's nothing I love more than imagination, engagement, and commitment. I'm always open to talk, suggestion, criticism, and collaboration. While I try to be as obliging, helpful, and courteous as possible, I have very little sympathy for ghosts, and anyone who'd like to string me along. Straightforwardness is all I ask for.

Looking for more personal details? I'm just some dude from the American south; software development is my job but games, writing, and trying to help others enjoy life are my passions. Been RPing for over a decade, starting waaaay back with humble beginnings on the Spore forum, so I know a thing or two, though I won't pretend to be an expert. If you're down for some fun, let's make something spectacular together.

As much as I love it though, how is this going to work?

Er, it's going to follow the plot of the game itself, but using player characters. I'll be selecting characters to serve as different roles in the story. Should work fine.
It's happening again: I'm going ahead and putting up a new interest check for yet another RP. I don't know if it'll catch on, but I personally like the idea a lot, so hey, check it out maybe you'll like it.
Yeah cause I'm totally gonna win that arguement. "Hey dude can I the cash you just spent several hours earning." Doesn't matter to me, it was a hell of a lot of fun to write and that's really what counts.

Though in all honesty I'm surprised you weren't annoyed that I killed your character.

I'm glad you see it that way, though you almost certainly spent more hours earning it than anyone else did. It was certainly fun to read. I am not annoyed at all that my character died; I wouldn't have been even if he had died ignobly. A core theme of Abel's character is that he doesn't expect to survive, so I was glad you had his life mean something. And even if I was annoyed I couldn't act on that any more than I did endearment.

On another note, I'm going ahead and putting up a new interest check for yet another RP. I don't know if it'll catch on, but I personally like the idea a lot.

Ever heard of Asura's Wrath? It's been called the Japanese God of War, but if you ask me, Kratos has nothing on Asura. First boss is bigger than the planet, after all. My basic idea is to re-enact the events of Asura's Wrath, but with player characters, which means it could go a whole lot of different ways. Though the plot will remain about the same, the characters made by any interested players will be the defining factors.

Basic plot
All conflict in this universe can be traced back to one central fact: the planet, gaea, is alive. The will of the planet is to remain wild and masterless, and for all life on it to be wild and masterless, which puts the will of the planet totally at odds with the very idea of civilization itself. For the purpose of eradicating mankind, it has spawned the Gohma—creatures with the shape of animals but skin of black ash and veins of crimson lava. And within the planet's fiery center is the
a gargantuan monster of immeasurable impurity that awakens every thirteen thousand years, rising from the planet's surface and destroying entire continents in the process.

Fortunately, there is another primeval force at odds with the will of the planet: Mantra. Though it takes many forms, Mantra is the antithesis of wilderness, as it embodies a facet of human behavior and consciousness. Few humans have are able to harness the power of Mantra, but those who do gain superhuman strength, agility, regeneration, long life, and overall survivability, not to mention the power to breath in space. It is in space lies the massive
wherein lie the forces that fight against the Gohma and subdue Vlitra whenever it arises, led by the Emperor of Shinkoku, Strada. Fighting under the Emperor, and leading Shinkoku's soldiers, are the demigod Guardian Generals, individuals of great power whose positions grant them Mantra Reactors implanted in their torsos, whose power is augmented by both the strength of the generals' personal Mantras and the volume of prayers offered by mortals.

Synopsis
This is intended to be a high-energy, combat-focused RP, of high casual standards. It is sent into the ancient past, but thanks to Mantra, those from the Karma Fortress have futuristic technology, though stylized in a mystical manner. Once all characters are created, we will begin the roleplay with a massive space battle against Gohma carriers launching from gaea's surface toward the Karma Fortress, and we'll show off our characters' powers, relationships, and personalities during that time. Afterward, I will select an individual from the players known as the Castaway, and another known as the Ringleader. Both of these players will have special responsibilities; basically, one becomes the story's main hero and the other becomes the main villain. Everyone else starts off on the side of the Ringleader, but I may allow a couple to defect, or pursue other courses. I will also be assigning specific roles to characters like Strategist, Right-Hand Man, and Fleet Commander. Not all people will be required to post consistently, but when you're called, I will expect you to show up. It is very likely that characters will die.

Here's a sheet if you want to start brainstorming:

Character Sheet

Name: (I will not accept any modern names)

Sex:

Apparent Age: (This is just how old the character looks)

Mantra: (This is your character's theme, what defines their personality, abilities, ideals, basically everything. While it must have a sizable impact on your character, it can be implemented in creative ways. The available Mantras are: Gluttony, Indulgence, Perfectionism, Envy, Terror, Ambition, tenacity, Servility, Audacity, Conceit, Despair, Arrogance, Rage, Brutality, Greed, Indolence, and Cupidity. If you have an idea for another one, let me know)

Power: (In addition the the generic superhuman abilities shared by characters. It must be befitting your Mantra)

Primary Attack: (What your character uses to fight in normal circumstances. This can include a weapon, or using your character's power offensively. If barehanded, specify the style)

Vajra Form: (A more powerful form assumable by your character when motivated. This change is physical)

Mantra Form: (A seriously powerful form assumable by your character when really motivated, and using your Mantra Reactor, which uses up Mantra, a finite resource)

End-all Form: (Only certain characters may access this form. It is ridiculously powerful and humongously-sized, using up incredible amounts of Mantra from the Karma Fortress)

Ranking Event: (How your character came to possess the title of Guardian General. This counts as a limited form of backstory. Generally, it involves your character either defeating an existing General and taking their position, or being given the position after the retirement/death of an existing General)

Personality: (Highly dependent on Mantra. Making your character either completely good or completely bad is not a great idea. I know the Mantras mostly have negative connotations, but one or more of them are going to at the very least be anti-heroes, so being too definitively bad will eliminate that possibility for you, and being too good isn't really an option.)

Precious Thing: (Something that seriously motivates your character. The loss of this thing would make your character hellbent on revenge, and the threatened loss of this thing might make your character perform unspeakable acts)

Appearance: (I will not accept any modern looks. This is set in the ancient past, and not in Europe. I would vastly prefer your character's clothing to be stylized in an eastern fashion, which includes any country in Asia except for Russia, including the Middle East and India. Your characters themselves can be of any body type, from muscular to scrawny to obese to decrepit, and may or may not have symbolic tattoos. The Mantra Reactor in your body turns any part of the body commonly used for combat into a durable golden metal, and can even weaponize body parts. You must use written description for your character, but if you can find a suitable image you can also use that image and then just give a written description of that)

-two more examples to come-

Oh, and I need help coming up with a title for the RP proper, should this arouse any interest, seeing as neither Asura nor his wrath will be present in this story.

I did follow all of the prompts specifications to the letter of the law, however I may have been a bit liberal with spirit behind the prompt. The idea was that the portal does appears before you and the kid immediatly introduces themselves as your kid. While that was the implication is was only actually stated that the portal appear near your character which it did.

Also I have about three drafts where the portal appears before Swansong while they're training and given Sapphire's personality I couldn't find any ways in which Demetri was able to get three words out before Swansong kicked his ass three ways to sunday. Given the Incident and that it was caused by KPT telling the Order how to open portals into Beacon a portal appearing before them would naturally be assumed to have come from them, Demetri walks out, Demetri is unconcious before he can explain. And I couldn't exaclty have him beat Swansong cause in order to beat a fully equipt just about to graduate hunters team he'd have to be the same level of skill as someone like Ozpin and even considering how he grew up I couldn't see that happening. I had to introduce him more graduatlly to avoid violence since that's sort of Sapphire's first reaction to a lot of things.

I see where you're coming from. Do you want to try to negotiate with either the winner or the runner-up for their position?
-=-=Gren, Mauve, Deneb, Shamrock, Myrtle=-=-

Not at all prepared for Shiro's thunderous roar, Mauve collapsed to the ground, screeching, his hands clamped over his ears with all the strength he could muster. An unusual hypersensitivity to sound sent waves of pain reverberating through his skull, ones that stirred not only agony inside his brain but also agonizing memories. Unable to suppress the King's Voice in any way, Mauve wished fervently for death to release him; when his sight, smell, and hearing drastically lessened in response to Shiro's semblance, he assumed death was upon him. “Silence,” he squeaked, still conscious but encapsulated in a faint, blurry haze that made the world seem far away, oblivious to Gren's fist closing around his threat. “At...last.”

The remaining three faunus didn't offer much of a challenge. Deneb initially surprised Gren by freeing himself from the clutches of his friction semblance but unknown means, but the stick-thin swan's first punch damaged the hunter-in-training no more than a feather might, and an instant later Deneb's windpipe, too, was being strangled. The chameleon attempted to persuade Gren to not suffocate him, saying that he'd comply and even taking the time to introduce himself as Shamrock Cochlain, but the risk of him getting away and escaping could not be taken. The last faunus, the portly porcupine, looked at Gren in mute disgust as he attempted to justify himself. “All you're doing is making sure that my pain will never end,” she spat, and offered pitiful resistance.

-=-=Shiro, Coral=-=-

As quick as Shiro was, Coral's physique might as well have been designed for speed. Hard pressed was the swordfighter to keep with with her as she pelted around corners and down halls, but after only a few moments the chase was over with Shiro's attempt to knock her out. While his technique was spot on, slamming his shield into the back of her skull with enough force to render a normal being senseless, Coral had not deactivated her aura as her companion had. The force of the blow impacting her orange-tinged aura knocked her to the ground, where it rose again to prevent her nose from shattering against the floor, and the combined expense of both absorbed collisions depleted Coral's aura almost completely. Still, some energy remained within her, and she rolled away to regain her feet and resume her flight.

Unfortunately, fate had other plans for her. A door just to her right suddenly erupted open, and through it burst a young squirrel faunus in a high state of panic, who saw Coral and froze just in time to avoid crashing directly into her. “Corey! Where's...?” Her eyes flitted behind the deer faunus to Shiro, who had by this time recovered from his big move. “Aw, crap.”

From the door by which the squirrel had entered came a large, familiar figure clad in blue. Abel lurched into the hallway, the Ampere floating, suspended by threads of electricity, beside him. The guardian's left hand was clamped around his right forearm, which bled profusely from an unreasonably-large puncture wound. His getup lay in various states of disarray, including his auburn hair and diminutive goatee, and much of it covered in a smelly, green liquid. Though his breathing came hard and ragged, and that wound seeped crimson, no bones could be made about how ready Abel was to continue fighting. With his chance arrival he had unwittingly worked with Shiro to trap the two faunus girls between them. Though neither knew it, the operating room in which Sapphire currently stood resided only fifty feet behind Abel. A noise of breaking glass caused the guardian to momentarily look behind him, but he refocused on Shiro quickly.

“Hey. I think these hallways run in a loop.” He glanced down at his wound and grimaced. “Don't ask.” Between him and the snow tiger faunus, the two girls both looked close to tears. “Uh...I got Saph's text but I don't think she's got it all right,” he said, clearly distracted by how upset the faunus girls were, and substantially less eager to rip the squirrel a new one for locking him in with a giant killer iguana. “What's the deal with these chicks, d'you know?”

-=-=Sapphire, Sienna=-=-

During the minute or so that the antisedative raced through Sienna's inner systems, Sapphire had more than enough time to study the word tattooed onto the girl's face: embodiment. Unbeknownst to the huntress-to-be, the actors in a silent scene rushed about twenty feet above her head. Nullified by the crystalline barrier dividing the operating room and the viewing gallery, words were exchanged in earnest, and a course of action was determined.

At last, Sienna's eyes blinked open, revealing those unnerving orbs. Sapphire's words didn't seem to register at first, as the faunus raised a deliberate hand to her head. When fingers met scruffy coyote ears, a minute tremor ran through Sienna's body. Those eyes, entirely black but for brilliant yellow irises, swept over the unfamiliar figure in front of her, and then the door. Her heart, previously restrained by the anesthesia, began to accelerate.

“The...surgery failed...?” The syringe, laid in haste on a nearby table, caught her gaze with its swirling pattern. In a similar fashion, by the glint of metal beneath the white radiance of the room's lights, did she notice Sapphire's weapons. “Didn't start?” Again Sienna looked at Sapphire, and this time, she moved. One instant she was laying down, and then next, the faunus was across the room, crouched on a countertop beside the sanitation bay. In her wake she left a momentary yellow blur; nothing else accredited the idea that she hadn't teleported. Her eyes, for a split-second a pure, inhuman yellow, reverted to black-with-yellow-irises. “You. You're here 'cause of my call. I..!”

A resounding crash of broken glass sounded from above, and into the room dropped a six-foot-tall black bear faunus in a suit jacket much like his wife's. Around him rained a deluge of shimmering shards, but none with enough force to puncture or cut anything. Shrugging his brawny shoulders as if in apology, he adjusted his glances as he grieved, “Such an...unfortunate delay. Sienna, don't get yourself worked up over this. Run if you need to, but come back in a few hours after this is dealt with. We'll get you treated, I promise.”

Though she bore an anxious expression, Sienna nodded, and her eyes changed again. Like a flash she darted from her cabinet, up the wall itself, and through the hole in the ceiling's glass dome into the viewing gallery. After her trail vaporized, only Sapphire and the administrator were left.

“Assault,” the administrator said, crossing his arms. “Property damage. Trespassing. Disturbing the peace. And crushing dreams. Not all technical criminal charges, but dire nonetheless. I believe that my patient just now mentioned a call? Terrible judgment on her part. She came around, and nobody coerced her. I really am sorry to get you involved. Since you've attacked my staff, I don't expect you're here to debate ideologies, but still I will be civil. Well, miss, I'm the head administrator here. You can call me Pop if you like, though it's not really a big boss kind of name, eh? And yours?” Pop allotted time for Sapphire to respond, with her name or otherwise. Afterward, he sighed regretfully. “Okay then. My guards have told me that there are more of you runnin' around my facility. In a few minutes, once they're properly equipped, they'll be on their way to stop your friends. If you win our duel, I guess you'll want to go warn them.” Four, eh? And with fancy weapons, and in their late teens. “Hunter team, maybe? My folks always wanted me to be a hunter, but I wanted to box, and to be a doctor. Bottom line is, I'm not gonna underestimate you. I was watching the whole time from the gallery, though, so I'm wise to your vanishing act.” Pop adopted a pugilist's stance, prepared to activate him semblance. “I'm done talkin' now. Show me what a huntress can do!”
DO I need to edit anything? I did just casually choke out the entire room after all. Perhaps they would have some ways to fight back that I've completely ignored?

The only one I was planning to have put up any real resistance is Deneb, who I was always planning to give a copy semblance. If you like, we can do a small collab in PMs dealing with that, but the end result would be the same so it's not totally necessary.
Alrighty then! Thank all five of you very much for your contributions. I'll go ahead and give you all a quick critique before I announce the winners.

Forsythe – well done. You fulfilled all the necessary parts of the prompt, adding in a bit from the past and a substantial hint of what's to come in the future. Atlas 'moving against ' the other kingdoms would certainly qualify as an event that destroyed the world as our characters know it. On the flipside, Diamond's child practically kidnapping her was -while interesting in that sort of action-movie way- a perhaps unnecessary twist for the sake of mystique, the nonexistent transition between the place where Diamond was brought and Ozpin's sleeping quarters was a little bit jarring, and this might just be my foolishness, but I never understood the other half of Lily's lineage.

Prince of Seraphs – sincere kudos to you for writing almost a novella, but on an analytical level it won't earn you any special favors. Rather than faulting you for prominence excess on word count, I'll try to focus on the events requested by the prompt. You decided to go the subtle route with the introduction of Demetri, spanning over a lot of IC-time, which was a creative way to do it that nevertheless contrasted with the prompt's specification. Ideally, the child's express intent was to warn their parent, and Demetri behaved almost as a double agent, and only did it as a last resort, and after much time. Your portrayal of Abel as a hero was endearing, hinting that while still defeatist he had developed to the level of determined defeatist, and I liked it but can naturally grant you no favors on that account due to bias. Also, I got the Doctor Who reference. Overall, I'd have to say while you did a splendid and thorough job writing, you perhaps missed the mark on exactly what I asked.

Multi_Media_Man – an impressive response to my prompt. You addressed the desired parts by the book, but also took the time to craft consequences of the Incident and carry a little into the future to act upon the information given by the time-traveler and change fate. The changing-semblance bit I found pretty intriguing, which made me wonder more about exactly how the time travel occurred, which you excused yourself from detailing with 'the how isn't important right now'. Still, your infrequent irregularities aren't enough to tarnish the quality of the whole.

Guess Who – I must admit that I enjoy reading your writing every time. Your sense of humor keeps getting to me, and though the union in question that led to Robert's children (nice idea to use twins, by the way) was fairly predictable, the manner in which it occurred aroused some points from me. I also enjoyed the interaction with the children, displaying a certain degree of personality that while perhaps not suiting the dire circumstances in which they came, nevertheless gave insight into their character. Unfortunately, those circumstances are the lowest point of your entry. The entire deal with the Reaper, which counts as a self-insert however good it might be, and how Robert's tiny bracers are the only thing that can kill a single monster responsible for the annihilation of civilization...it all just seemed a bit contrived.

HereComesTheSnow – you did pretty well for a first entry! Your humor, character interaction, and general style of writing were energetic and entertaining. That said, their blend made it a bit confusing. I regret to say that you lost a few points by misunderstanding some parts of the prompt; the Incident, where the Order of the Grimm broke into the school and wrecked havoc, already happened—a year ago to be precise. With that in mind, there's effectively no world-threatening event that the girl came back in time to warn of. I was going to fault you for never naming the girl, but since you said 'nameless niece' in a certain part, I decided that it was intentional and let it go. I know I might seem kinda mean to be getting onto you like this, so I hope you don't feel badly, and use this as a learning experience for next time.

The winner...man, it was hard toss-up this round. Took me the better part of this morning to finally decide. In first place is Multi_Media_Man, who earns 2 credits, and right behind by the slimmest of margins of Forsythe with 1 credit. If there could have been a tie for second place, there would have been.

Here's your next assignment.

#11 - Contest – And Yet a Hero

Judge: Lugubrious
Type: Character creation
Deadline: May 27th, evening

Your task is to create a character using the provided sheet that satisfies the following information. Categories that do not appear on the character sheet are open to interpretation. Categories that do appear on the character sheet must be followed, but can and should be further expounded upon if able.

Motif: Mantra
Role: Leader
Age: 21
Gender: Female
Species: Human
Additional info: The idea of Mantra is this: the character effectively represents one of the following traits of human behavior: gluttony, indulgence, perfectionism, terror, tenacity, servility, despair, rage, indolence, or cupidity. This facet of human behavior is evident not only in their personality but also in their appearance, specialty, and equipment. The mantras described are not all positive, some decisively negative in fact, but the character is still at least mostly heroic, as evidenced by his or her status as the leader of Beacon's senior ace team.

Keep in mind, the character must represent his or her mantra, but the way that occurs can be variable. A lustful character based on 'cupidity' might be the kind you'd typically expect, one who's willing to pursue anything with a pulse, or be someone with a boundless, intimate desire for a single individual.
<Snipped quote by harinezumikouken>

Lug said the editing was unnecessary, for the record I wasn't the only one that trampled over Lug's NPCs.

Not necessarily. The ones you 'trampled' over were just not all that important.
I'm just waiting a little while for other posters. We've been moving along pretty darn quickly. I'll almost certainly post this evening.
