Journey of a Thousand Miles

The girl was about to really tear into the gate receptionist, when to her absolute surprise, the boy from earlier stepped between them. A response died on her lips as he gently took her aside. As he told her to take it easy, she was ready to respond that she was fine and that it was none of his business. Something stopped her from speaking, though, and she wasn't entirely sure what it was. Her brain was working better than it had in weeks, thanks to having some food to fuel it. That alone was giving her enough time to stop and think about what was going on instead of having an immediate reaction.

He could have just left her alone. He could have simply ignored the situation like everyone else in the small gate station. He hadn't, though, and he'd been more concerned about her than he had been about the woman in uniform.

Why?

She didn't get it, and no matter how hard she thought about it, it didn't make any sense. She turned to look for him after he'd stepped away for a bit, and found him talking with a pink Pokemon with a dopey face, one she didn't recognize. With a faint sigh, she went over toward him, looking curious. "Who's this big fella?"

I know, I realize that! But Kijani isn't going to.

Plus, I didn't want her to show off in front of Connor. Connor would have questions.

Perhaps the only reason you haven't been able to use your powers is because Professor Xavier said you couldn't, and you automatically believed him? Will you be a doll and try for me? Call me back once you have." He hangs up the phone and begins humming as he drives.

Kijani stared at the phone after it went silent. "Doll? Really, Luthor?" She shook her head and pocketed it. She had tried, the first few nights, to break the block. It hadn't done anything at all. Even when she was under severe stress, her powers had yet to show. She returned to Connor and smiled in apology. "Prank call." She sighed, her anger having fizzled out. "I'm tired, Connor... I think I'm just going to go back to my room and pass out for a while." It was more truth than lie. She was tired, but she could have managed to spend more time with him. But there was her mission to attend to tomorrow, and she wanted to be at full focus. "Walk me home?"

I wonder if he'd be able to read 'future villain' on her anywhere. She's very good at being disarmingly charming, but then... so is Tony.

"I'm sorry for interrupting your afternoon, Ms. Rayne." Anthony replies sarcastically before continuing with a more serious tone. "I was just curious. How does it feel to spend months and months honing your abilities, only to have them taken away?"

Devika let out a low noise that was meant to be a laugh. "I went from valedictorian and top of my class, to absolutely useless in a matter of weeks." Her gaze dropped. "I don't know what I was playing at, coming here."
