Mallory coughed a bit, pretending to be ill. It seemed to keep humans from coming near her, and with the hunters acting more like the slayers of lore, she wouldn't want to take any chances. Neither her uncle or father knew what would happen to one of their kind if they were killed -- the best option was that they simply were reborn.

She shuddered to think about the alternative: simply ceasing to exist.

Glancing around in the chilly night, she spotted a dingy looking bar, and chuckled grimly to herself. Despite being a spirit of death, legally, she was unable to consume alcohol. Getting her wallet at the ready, she marched over to the bar, feeling confident with her dark jeans and combat boots. The fake ID had cost her a good fortune--money that she'd regret later when it came to paying off her student loans. Finally reaching the entrance of the bar, she found herself face to face with the bouncer.

A burly human, he sneered down at her, hardly blinking when he saw her ID.

"Am I supposed to believe this is real?" he laughed. "Get lost, kid."

Mallory frowned, feeling unusually gutsy. The temptation to transform and allow him to see her for who she really was.... No, it was far too dangerous.

"I'm not a child," Mallory snapped. "I'm old enough to die -- I'm old enough to drink."

"And besides, it's not like you care, especially with your clientele..." she added quickly, peeking up at the bouncer. He hardly moved, and she frowned, temporarily reading his soul -- or as she called it, his expiration date.

She'd be visiting his home that night, she realized.

Perhaps he deserved it. She really needed a drink, and he was the only one staying in her way.

Rolling her eyes, she grumbled a goodbye and walked around the corner. Hardly checking to see if any humans were around, a soft violet aura enveloped her, pulsing out as her human form vanished, replacing her with a frightening creature of despair. Her cloak covered her face, she walked through the walls of the bar, thankful for the protection of the witch's charm.

Now, if only that goddamned succubus wouldn't try to touch her cloak again, perhaps she'd have fun at this bar...

Of course, that was impossible -- she hadn't noticed the slayer entering the establishment. No one did.

It's all good. I was studying for my finals. Senior year has crushed my soul.

Same. I have 20 more full days left. Can't wait for it to end. :P

Mara continued staring at the stranger as he shook Rowan’s hand, and for a moment, she felt slightly offended. How come Rowan got the attention of the stranger? It was hardly like he spent every waking moment thinking about any place other than Dewmeadow! She frowned a bit, sliding into an unusually bitter mood. It was just typical for starry eyed Rowan to…

Wait….

He’s from Johto?

Mara’s eyes widened and her jealously towards Rowan vanished instantly. The stranger—no, Yasha, she corrected herself—came from the Johto region. Mara knew very little about geography beyond Huji, but as far as she could tell, Johto had to be somewhere exotic. Perhaps, it was a place overrun by pirates, and this Yasha had gone on some sort of daring adventure to defend forbidden knowledge! Quickly becoming excited, Mara did her best to maintain her usual cool composure, but it was no use. She was too distracted to even notice Yasha’s reaction to her.

”So you’re from Johto—tell us all about it, then!” Mara demanded eagerly, before attempting once more to appear cool. “That is, if you’re telling the truth…Yasha.”

She rocked on her heals slightly, waiting with trepidation. She paid no more attention to Rowan or anything around her. The professor could have arrived and announced that all of the pokemon had to be sent to Redorchard to fulfill demand and Mara wouldn’t have noticed.

”We don’t get strangers here very often…” Mara added once more, before resolving to stay quiet until the stranger had a chance to respond.
I'll post soon! Studying for AP exams, sorry!
@Whimsley I don't think a pokemon should be stuck in the battle the instant they're sent out, but I also don't think the identity of the other pokemon should be revealed. Similarly to what @PlatinumSkink said, I think it makes the most sense for the victor to be able to switch out their pokemon, but they don't get to know what pokemon the other person is sending in -- same goes for the loser, they won't know what pokemon the winner is sending in.

Perhaps there could be an overall limit as to the number of times your pokemon can be switched out? Maybe for shorter battles, you can only switch out once. Longer battles, you can switch out a few times... I feel like there's some sort of mathematical ratio we could find there, haha.

Mara groaned a bit, and stared up at the ceiling. She heard rumors about a sickly boy who made a huge discovery in mathematics by watching the flies moved. Expectantly, she gazed upwards, looking for something similar to happen.

"Reason one hundred sixty seven to leave this place…” Mara muttered softly as she averted her gaze, glancing at the clock. A pang of alarm went through her when she not only read the time, but realized what it meant.

On the day she would finally be able to leave this rural town, she overslept. Her parents would never let her hear the end of this, she realized with dismay! Jumping out of bed, she quickly got dressed, putting on a respectable black and white blouse, partnered with black jeans and boots. After running a comb through her hair, Mara slid her skull pin neatly into place, and grabbed her small backpack of belongings.

Hesitating over a picture of her dear friends, she shook her head, and left it behind. She’d have no need for it on the road ahead — there was too much to see, too much to do, too much to learn! She wouldn’t have time to reminisce on old friendships! Besides, it was highly unlikely that Rob or Christine would ever return to Dewmeadow.

Dashing down the stairs, Mara pushed open the large french doors of her home, hardly sparing her parents a second thought. They’d already said their goodbyes the night before, and predictably, her father had attempted to persuade her to pursue a more sensible career. Mara had heard nothing of it, already dreaming of the sights out in the world to see. She raced her way towards Professor Dogwood’s laboratory, kicking up small clouds of dust from the dirt that she disturbed. Laughing a bit, she couldn’t help but see the irony—at the same time that she was kicking up dust, water struck her jeans, time and time again!

Entirely out of breath, ages seemed to have past by the time she arrived at the laboratory. She had hardly given any attention to everyone she passed—they were all boring, people she already knew. They had nothing new to offer her—no new tales and stories! She’d known each and every one of them since she was small. The familiarity drove her insane—she wanted something new, something strange, something better!

Stopping in front of the door, she quickly glanced at the other two would-be trainers. She knew Rowan, and frowned a bit with disappointment. Why they couldn’t have had new people coming, she didn’t know… Sure, Dewmeadow was rural and out of the way but…

She sighed, attempting not to look at the blonde haired child with disdain. It wasn’t his fault that they’d known each other for years, even if he was three years her younger. As she avoided Rowan’s gaze, she caught the eye of the stranger, and a smile broke out on her face. However, she quickly bit her tongue, glancing down at the ground before looking up once again with all the courage she could muster.

”Where did you come from?” Mara asked bluntly, hardly caring who would enter the laboratory first.

There was someone new in her small town of Dewmeadow. She looked at him like a puzzle, waiting to be solved and then tossed away once completed. Things were finally becoming interesting.
The post is beautifully written! :) I'll come up with something once I finish washing out hair dye... Hard to type without glasses on haha
@Whimsley That was exactly what I was going for. I just looked for pokemon with eyes that would terrify you. :P Thanks!
@Whimsley No worries! I was thinking Dewmeadow, and I'll put a revised thing here!
