As Anisa's voice filled the ship, Dorothy almost jumped for joy. Finally. There was something for her to do, something for her to help with, some action for her to take to avert the likelihood of death and destruction for her baby sister. Emergency packs had to be prepared for Jackson and Gene--that was a simple enough task, and one that Dorothy suspected wouldn't take her more than a minute. Saluting air, a habit she hadn't quite managed to kill from her time in the Alliance Military, Dorothy sprinted over to the cabinet.

She tore open the doors, and grabbed two of the emergency kits she kept prepared. They were intended for use out on the field, in case she had to quite literally run to someone to keep them from dying, but they'd suit Jackson and Gene's purposes, Dorothy figured. The only real drawback was that neither of them had any medical skill, as far as Dorothy was aware. She grabbed the kits, and kicking the cabinet closed, made off on a mad dash to the shuttle pods.

Heading to Gene's shuttle pod first, Dorothy quickly handed off the emergency kit, and wished her friend good luck. She had a bad feeling about this entire mission, but Dorothy knew time was of the essence, and she couldn't do much more than smile at Gene. After dropping off the kit with her, Dorothy then sprinted over to Jackson's pod, wishing him good luck as well as she handed over the emergency kit. And once done, Dorothy returned to the medical bay, feeling a little less twitchy, but still fidgeting for work, for a chance to do anything to help her baby sister.

Cecily was taken aback for a moment. She understood Alicia's message--there was something important that Caesar needed to see at wherever the Gonzalez family crypt was. And from Caesar's question, she could only assume that it was located in Mexico. She had been called Roy's partner earlier that week, and that had been a shock...but was she Caesar's partner now? For a brief moment, Cecily pondered if instead of going back to school after quitting her job, she might be able to ask Caesar for one.

"Once. Family vacation after my parents got some kingpin off scot free," Cecily replied, rolling her eyes slightly at her parents. They were lawyers. Of course they were going to act like scum, enjoying winning cases even when no justice was served. Come to think of it, they probably loved Justice for that very reason--criminals were hardly ever punished. They'd make a killing here.

Of course, getting out of Justice seemed to be a pretty good idea. If Caesar wanted her to come with him to Mexico, she wouldn't argue. Maybe she'd stop by Barnes and Noble, pick up a Spanish phrase book. Assuming, of course, she didn't die of lead poisoning or some other ailment first. As Cecily started walking towards Caesar, as he began to head out, she spotted a map.

"This looks useful, eh?" Cecily pointed out, fishing down the map of Justice. It didn't look like any map she had carefully studied before, instead showing sewer routes. And from their previous journey into the compound via a storm drain tunnel, she wouldn't be surprised if the way out was similar. Cecily continued to follow Caesar towards the darkly lit portion of the room, only for the door to be locked, and ask for a retinal scan.

"I'm guessing it wants you to scan your eyes," Cecily commented, glancing at the flashing area. It wouldn't make much sense to her if Alicia allowed her father to go inside, and then not be able to get out. Unless, of course, she secretly hated him--but Cecily highly doubted that from what she'd seen.

As Cynthia spun around gleefully, Iris grew more and more curious as to what traumatized this poor woman to such an extent. She was a firm believer that insanity was never a pre-existing conditions--that it was a response to one's surroundings. Of course, genetics could aid in the process, and perhaps it was naive of Iris to think as she did, but she still couldn't help but imagine Cynthia--Valentine--had suffered some great tragedy for her mind to be so warped. The Ludwig Building, Iris realized sadly, was not quite the appropriate treatment facility for her.

But Iris resolved to do her best. "That's wonderful, it's always good to have some friends to talk to," Iris replied, smiling at the girl. Her heart broke for her as Cynthia mentioned a dead friend, David. And as the girl began to spiral out of control, wading into a deep pit of death and despair, Iris' heart broke for Cynthia again. "I don't think you're crazy. It's perfectly normal to feel upset after friends die, Valentine. We all have to grieve in our own ways."

But it's all happening again? What other horrors had Cynthia suffered through, beyond the death of a close friend? From her words, Iris took it that this wasn't the girl's first brush with death. She had gone through some horrors prior to this one, complicating her process of grieving, of healing. Perhaps this David's death had caused her to regress, explaining why she was so far gone for a halfway house patient.

"If you want to talk about it, I'm here for you," Iris said. "But if you'd like some time alone, I understand perfectly, and you can go get settled in your room for a while." She didn't want to pressure the broken girl. Too many people made that mistake with the damaged, expecting them to pop right back up and shake it off. Time was the greatest medicine that Iris could use. Time for Cynthia to think, to grieve, to mourn, and to heal.

History

Your First Walker Encounter: Beatrice had been hired by an anxious mother, as her child had gone missing. She tracked down the missing daughter to Coney Island. Beatrice rented a room, and as she was planning out her strategy to make contact with the missing daughter, she heard a gigantic thud coming from the next room. When Beatrice entered to investigate, she found one of the other lodgers dead on the floor, clutching his chest. He had died of a heart attack. And before she even managed to call for the police, he was back up on his feet again, trying to bite her. A few shots later from her .9 mm, and he was down.

History Before Outbreak Beatrice's parents were slumming it out in Justice, taking to the shadows. The pair of them had run away, claiming that it was true love, at the age of 17. It didn't take too long for them to fall in with the wrong crowd, pumping themselves full of whatever kind of drug they could find. It was a miracle that when Beatrice was born she didn't have any sort of birth defects. The young couple was only eighteen years old and their conception of a decent babysitter was their drug dealer.

When Beatrice was three years old, Child Protective Services seized her, removing her from the cesspool of inequity her parents called home. She was bounced from foster home to foster home, with her parents hardly bothering with her. They would usually send her a birthday card, but the main issue was they could never remember when her birthday was. Beatrice never cared to correct them. She was too focused on learning how to survive in the dark and gritty city, getting into fights frequently with the other children.

By the time Beatrice was fifteen, rather than bouncing from home to home, she was bouncing from home to juvi to home. Some of the crimes she actually committed--others were pinned on her by the other children. But that was perhaps the best year of her life. Rather than sending her to another home in Justice, Beatrice was sent to a small town in Northeastern California. Getting away from the violent city did wonders for her. She concentrated on her studies, having a sharp upward trend throughout high school. She began to live, rather than just survive.

Her foster parents adopted her, a lonely couple unable to have children of their own. They walked Beatrice through the process of applying to college, and she eventually attended a state university. Studying Pre-Law, Beatrice wasn't really certain what she wanted to do. It was in her final year that Beatrice realized she likely wasted her education, as she had no intention of being a lawyer. She missed the thrill one could get from living in Justice, and did a bit of research into what she could use her degree for.

Combined with her legal knowledge and excellent capacity for violence, Beatrice became a process server. She moved back to Justice after graduating college, her foster family being kind enough to pay off her loans. Establishing herself as a slightly unorthodox process server, Beatrice was more truthfully a professional stalker who plays tag with legal paperwork. On occasion, she was asked to find people for a general purpose, though that business is run under the table.

History Since Outbreak: Beatrice tried her best to rush back home to California, where at least there would be people that she trusted. Instead, she ended up traveling with a group of misfits in New York, moving from secluded houses in the countryside as an effort to avoid the walkers. This worked while the weather was warm, but New England weather is merciless. Come January, about half of the members in the group died, not from walkers, but from the elements.

Beatrice and the survivors, figuring they couldn't last another winter, started heading down south. They stayed in the woods if they could, with abandoned farm houses being a particular favorite. The little community had an occasional loss from a walker ambush, but they managed to stay mostly in tact, with members teaching each other the secrets they had picked up. But they didn't have much in the way of medical knowledge, instead raiding the stores for DayQuill whenever they could, as it was all they could do.

It was in Georgia, two years after the outbreak, that things started to fall apart. Infighting tore the group in half, as people had started to fall in love--and then violently out of love. The group disintegrated, half opting to head west, and the others remaining in place. Beatrice, as much as she wanted to return to California, ended up stuck in the group staying in Georgia.

She didn't stay with the splintered group for more than another year. She was one of the better trained members in the group, for when it came to dealing with conflict. And she had become quite good friends with one of the group members, thinking of him like a little brother. But as the temperatures rose, so did the tempers. Her only friend ended up shot in a drunken argument, and that same night, Beatrice left the group under the cover of darkness. She's been scavenging her way through Georgia now, wandering almost aimlessly. If she finds another refugee group of people she can trust, that's great. And if not, it doesn't matter too much for her. As long as she's still breathing.

The other was that she had cut and left, not wanting to deal with a bunch of amputees. For what respect and friendship Beatrice had with Thana, she hopes it was the former. Better dead than someone who couldn't look them in the eyes to say she was leaving.

Although this may be surprising to some, Alex is Beatrice's favorite in the unit. Each of them are emotionally guarded and it's nice for Beatrice to be able to talk to him without expecting an onslaught of questions about her emotions, her past, her dreams, and so forth. The loss of his leg and the way Alex continues to survive despite it has caused her to respect him, more than his actions taking down Eden already did. He's her favorite person to be impersonal with.

The O Wars have been a major source of amusement for Beatrice, allowing her to briefly take her mind off of the horrid state of the world around them. She keeps around the can of O's mostly to mess with Thalia, but also because Beatrice has developed a slight crush on her. The slight antagonistic behavior is Beatrice's method of hiding those feelings - feelings which Thalia may or may not be aware of at this point. She considers Thalia a good friend (maybe something more intimate in some moments?) and has her back - even if that means contemplating one day putting an empty can of SpaghettiO's next to Thalia's head at night when she's asleep.

Not one to get personal, Manny's constant efforts to get her to open up and befriend her have had the opposite effect. She essentially is digging her heels in, refusing to have anything beyond a professional relationship with the dentist-turned-medic. Every time he tries, the tension grows a little more and if it wasn't for the fact that he's a damn good medic, Beatrice might have started to actively dislike him. However, as the only two able bodied people in the group, their professional relationship has grown from the proximity and constant work.
