I do say this a lot, but when it comes to the OOC setup, make sure that you use a good layout with titles, lists and formatting. It'll help convey your message to your audience a lot better as it's more like documentation for your RP.

@Darkmatter did mention some good points with setting and plot, an aim, and the ability as a GM.

Your setting needs to be well thought out to the point where you can say definitively yes or no to most questions (eg, Will there be magic? Can I use this weapon? I want to go down this route? etc). By knowing what it is that you want and sticking to that, you can prevent any complications occurring later on with bias, overpowered characters, and Mary Sues (Characters that fit TOO perfectly into the world).

It will also be 'your RP' so as a GM you need to know when to say no and when to say yes. Showing that you have a clear vision will draw people in as they will feel comfortable that the RP will work, and not become some hodgepodge of ideas that 'may' work.

Finally, the Aim. Probably one of the most important factors that seems to fall flat on many people. As a GM you are creating the world, but giving a motive for the players in that world can be a bit difficult sometimes. I have the best example in one RP where for a few post my character didn't have anything to do as she was waiting for the GM to supply a new Aim after I completed my last. Instead of giving me a goal she wanted to supply exposition for the overarching story and thus my character had to wait for a few post for no particular reason. To be truthful, no one really knew what the goal was going to be as she only created the world and kept all the story cards close to her chest.

There is a fine line that you have to tread when it comes to GMing and that is between Roleplaying, and Story Telling. If you're too heavy into the story telling your players will notice it and feel like pawns rather than players. Therefore, if you mention in the OOC that there is a distinct objective of some sort, it will help portray your RP as something that has choice and opportunity. I won't go too much more into this as there is a heap more that I wouldn't cover for your needs, but by keeping this in mind while you create the RP, you will begin to understand where the parts are that you need to focus on.

Best of luck and let us know how you go.
I can see that there's a lot of different views, both for and against, and I do believe both is valid. What I think should be remembered that unlike a novel, we on the internet have the ability to add colour where some of those other mediums simply can't. By the same logic, adding music and images can be seen as a benefit to help improve on what could already be a great post.

@Ellri actually pointed out an important part, with @Jig making a similar statement. It comes down to the colours and way that they are used. Bright vibrant colours as opposed to dull tones can make or break the feel of the post (notice I said feel, not contents), and sometimes when having elements like electronic code can look interesting if there is a tone of colour added.

I can understand the view of the purist, someone that strives to create a medium that is authentic as possible (and we shouldn't loose that tradition), but I don't believe that this view should be used to essentially push a potentially great writer out of a Roleplay. For me, that can come across as a tad elitist where you are not judging someone on their writing skills, but rather their post's visuals.

EDIT : And please, there's no need for people to start abusing each other over this topic. I only created it to ask for some opinions but several people are starting to take it almost too personally. If I knew that people were going to start abusing each other over "What colour is that dress?" like scenarios, than maybe I shouldn't have created the thread. We are individual humans with individual views. Two people with two different views can be both 100% right or 100% wrong.

A wise man would place themselves in the other person's shoes and see why that difference in opinion may also be correct.

Why do you ask such a pointless question? :P

So just throwing this out there. How do people feel when colours are used in an IC post? Are you one that uses coloured text or are you one that prefers to use the conventional method of writing?

Personally I find I'm using more coloured text for speech with a focus on what other people (players only) say, as well as what my character is saying or thinking. I find that it helps break up the post a bit, making it easier for others to spot when they have been quoted for a conversation and also an emphasis on when my character is speaking.

So what are your feelings on others, or yourself, when they use he [color] tags in their IC post?
Cari Cruz

A sudden thud was heard as Cari's body hit the floor. As she placed her hands on the hard surface she pushed herself up into a sitting position so she leaned against the side of her bed, and slowly ran her fingers through her hair. Looking forward she could see the empty bottle of spirits resting on the floor on the other side of the room. Not knowing how she got it or why she decided to drink it she let out a subtle groan and leaned over towards the mess pile on the end of her bed in order to grab her clothes.

As she sat there in her underwear she slowly pulled a shirt over her head and then proceeded to try and stand so she could put on her skirt, jumper and stockings. The room swayed slightly as her head gained altitude and in an effort to regain balance she tipped over towards the wall and used her hand as a prop.

"Definitely a bit much to drink last night..."

Several moments later Cari stepped out of her room and closed the door behind her, hearing the familiar click of it locking. As she walked along the corridor she threw her uniquely designed jacket over her shoulders, allowing the neon urban print to announce itself to the world that this was 'Cari Cruz'. While she moved towards her destination she reached behind her back and felt around for the pair of pistols that she usually had equipped, making sure that her hangover state hadn't forgotten a key part of her survival. Satisfied, she swung her arms back around crossing them over back and forth as she warmed herself up for the day ahead.

Cari stepped into the Cafeteria just as Captain Renault began his speech and listened to the proposed plan for the day.
Reading up on the IC and should be making a post later tonight.
Chipping in a few dollars as a gesture of thank you would be fine by me as I'm enjoying the site and know they do need some funding to stay alive.

In regards to thank yous... A trophy is more than enough to hand out. Anything more can come across as a bit of an elitist attitude, but as said above, I wouldn't care if I didn't get any benefits.
For a big meet up I'm not really interested, but if someone happens to be near me I may catch up.

Then again, I can see this working in places like the UK, US or parts of Europe where population density is higher, but with Sydney I do doubt that there would be many here, and old enough that they don't need parental consensus.
I'm at work for another 8 hrs so I done be able to go on the writing pad much
@DemonTongue I'm waiting for someone to post, so I'm not sure whether to skip them or wait... it's been 9ish days since his post so I'm confident about him returning. :\
