Bio

Well now that I got the customary "post once" requirement out of the way....

HELLO

Welcome to my safe space. Well, about as safe as one space can be, I guess. If you are here looking for something, I am very sorry to disappoint you, but I made fresh cookies! Come sit a spell.

I guess I'll do some more in-depth stuff about myself. My name is Nick and I am 35 years old living in Illinois. I am a therapist and clinical responder (which is a fancy way of saying I go out on police calls to provide mental health assistance). Been doing therapy for a few years now and I absolutely love it!

I am a gay, cisgender man. I came out in January 2020 (smack dab in the middle of a pandemic. Timing was always my downfall). There is still much I am learning, but I am proud and happy to be who I really am and not have to hide it anymore!

I am an avid gamer, especially roleplaying games (cue surprised and shock noises). I also enjoy writing and reading, especially mysteries. I am not new to roleplay, I promise. I have been doing it for years now in different formats. I am experienced, even if it doesn't seem like it.

I use humor as a coping mechanism for sure, but I also like laughing and enjoying myself. Life can be pretty sad and upsetting for the most part and I don't want to add to it.

Whew! That got deep!

I will be poking my nose around in spaces and hoping to jump headfirst into this. Some interests I have in terms of roleplay settings include superheroes, DnD, science fiction/fantasy, mysteries, thrillers, horror stuffs, apocolypse, and espionage. And I am a fan of most things pop culture. If you have any suggestions or possible roleplays you think I would love, please let me know.

Otherwise, stick around! This is gonna get wild!

You could always find a realistic image and we can all use the POWER OF IMAGINATION to Harpy-ize her. Up to you though, I just do not want cartoon-ish images or anime or anything like that used.

And NO A.I.
I am so happy for the interest! I am so excited since this will be my first RP I ever GM'd ever. We have enough to get things going so once I finish the CS and all that I will invite you all. Working on a Discord server too :)

Edit: I should note also that for your character I will be asking for realistic images. It doesn't have to be straight out of a period piece (like the ones I found for the Notable People).
@Blizz I hold the authority to deny anything, but I am not opposed to things getting 'out there' in terms of concepts. I would say to keep it more grounded, if possible, but a gunblade isn't out of the question, per se.
@PatientBean
When it comes to enlightened abilities, can they change ones appearance? Or are they just special abilities they can use?

They can change appearances. The circus houses a lot of people whose abilities alter their appearance in one form or another.

You already know I'm interested. Not 100% if I have the bandwidth but I'm going to brainstorm. Is there any limitations to types of abilities?

For example, I was thinking of a telepathic / medium with the traveling circus that would be a fortune teller type character. Just tossing around ideas.

Hizzah! As for limitations, no god-like or insta-kill abilities but other than those most everything is fair game. A fortune teller would work beautifully.

Dearest Sir or Madam,

It has come to our attention that your child possesses what we have come to call 'Enlightenment'. That is to say your child now possesses strange and bizarre abilities that which cannot be fully explained. How we have come to know this information matters not, but do not fear. Your child is one of many with such abilities. We are sure you have questions and we are happy to answer these and more in an upcoming visit at your homestead. We ask that you do not let your child know of this visit purely to ensure we prevent any mishaps or misinformation spread.

Suffice to say, this can be a challenging time for parents such as yourself. It is difficult enough to raise a child with good morals and judgment in this time, but we at St. Eustice's School For the Enlightened believe it can be done without fear or concern. Since our school opened we have trained many young lords and ladies in the fine art of Enlightenment as well as many other avenues of study. The students are taught such lessons as finances, mathematics, social decorum, and how to best find your place amongst society with one's unique abilities. We have dedicated programs for both the young men and young women who join us and rest assured, we ensure both receive proper training for their futures.

To prepare for our upcoming visit, we would appreciate if you could have your child ready and dressed appropriately and fashionably for our arrival. While tuition to our school is free, a reasonable donation is always appreciated to ensure your child amongst the many others are provided for. If you are to have any questions, please feel free to ask. If all is agreed upon, we can set the schedule for your child to begin attendance immediately. If you are unsure, we hope we can appease your mind. Rest assured, this is, and always will be, your choice.

Kindly and Respectfully,

Lord Ingram Poe

Hello and welcome to the interest check for my first ever RP!

The Season of the Enlightened is a superpower RP set during the Regency period in England. In this timeline, people started manifesting powers of various forms, and history was changed as a result. The Regency period was a time of refinement and culture, but mainly for the wealthy elite. It was a time for seeking out marriages for the betterment of station and to amass more wealth. Young Lords and Ladies were expected to maintain decorum and stick to their station in life. While culture bloomed, this was also a period of poverty and reform, and many people struggled during this time.

While I intend to be as historically accurate as possible, there will be some creative liberties taken. Due to the nature of superpowers, which was called the Enlightenment during this period, things progressed quickly.

Our story takes place in England in the year 1811. Enlightened are seen in a more positive light, though many still fear them and wish for them to be taken care of. The RP will be from the point of view of the many people who were part of this period and the trials and tribulations faced. There will be romance, mystery, action, fantasy, and adventure.

Please bear with me as this is my first RP I have ever started. I encourage feedback and want to work with people to create an amazing story. I am excited to do this with you!

Notable Places

St. Eustice's School for the Enlightened: Opened in the late 1600s, St. Eustice's School for the Enlightened is an institution dedicated to helping those with Enlightened abilities better manage them as they enter society. Generally, the age range for attendees starts as young as 12 and goes up to as late as 21, though there are notable exceptions when needed. Both men and women are encouraged to attend, though the classwork differs. Once it is proven that the student has accomplished their coursework and has met the criteria, they are introduced back into society during the school's "Enlightenment Soiree".

Mr. Maleficar's Traveling Circus: An assortment of acts run together by Mr. Maleficar. Typically those in the circus are Enlightened members who have rejected society for one reason or another or those with Enlightened abilities that have altered them so that society rejects them first. Despite the kind nature presented, there is a dark underbelly with secrets screaming to get out.

Lady Rosemarie's Haven For Wayward Girls: A group home/school for girls ages 8 to 16 who have demonstrated Enlightened abilities but, for one reason or another, have not attended St. Eustace's. These are typically girls on the run from their families or from the law who need a place to stay and a space to learn how to manage their abilities. The place itself is hidden away and very few know its exact location. Rumors abound as to what exactly is taught there.

Notable Figures

Lord Ingram Poe: The director and head of St. Eustice's School for the Enlightened. He takes his job seriously and with pride. He is Enlightened with the ability to sense when someone else, whether they have awakened or not, is Enlightened and pinpoint where other Enlightened individuals are. He is a wealthy man and is experienced in armed combat. He does not have a wife which leads many to speculate about him. Are his intentions noble or is there more under the surface?

Mr. Maleficar: No one knows his real name but many know him as Mr. Maleficar, the ring leader of his traveling circus. He is Enlightened and opts to travel rather than be amongst his peers. He can manipulate and move metal and always carries a metal cane that he can shape at will. Despite his kind presence during shows, there is more to him than meets the eye. Rumors speculate abuse amongst his crew, though no one says anything for long.

Lady Imogene Rosemarie: The headmistress of Lady Rosemarie's Haven For Wayward Girls. Despite initial appearance, Lady Rosemarie was not born into wealth, instead making it on her own after her Enlightened abilities manifested and she denied entry into St. Eustace's school. Her Enlightened abilities allow her to blend in by shifting her image to fit her needs. Lady Rosemarie ensures the wards in her care are treated fairly and are taught useful skills. But what exactly does Lady Rosemarie consider useful?

The Dark Embers: An organization filled with Enlightened members whose goal it is to see Enlightened have power and control world events. While many call this organization terrorists and villains, many also see them as heroes and a necessary evil. Members are often called after as no one knows where they inhabit with many speculating they travel. Disastrous events are often labeled as Dark Ember attacks, but is it true they are as dangerous as many claim?

Countess Horatia Pomperfith: A wealthy Countess known for her huge parties and having been married three times with each husband passing away. A huge gossipmonger who puts out a monthly newsletter detailing the goings-on in England. Many claim she kills her husbands, but she'll never tell. Is she a worthy ally or a terrible foe?

Moses Wendell: A man who made a name for himself in England's war efforts, earning him a title and land. Many speculate him to be amongst the hierarchy of the Dark Embers, though part of this may be due to his background and race. He is enlightened with the ability to manipulate his density; becoming durable and strong. Does he have his country's best interests at heart or is there a darkness lurking under that smile?

How Rolls Will Work

I will leave it up to the group to decide if they would like to use a dice roller in the Discord Server or use the handy roller here on the Guild, but for use of skills in your posts I will ask that you roll for them. General things will not need a roll but for things that require a use of a certain skill or even your power you will need a roll.

Skills that you are proficient in will get a boost while skills you are not so good at will get a setback. There are 5 levels of skill

  • Easy - Only the lowest of the low could fail this. Only needs to beat a 4
  • Intermediate - Requires some knowledge, but could be done by anyone. Needs to beat an 8
  • Hard - Requires practice and some know-how. Needs to beat a 12
  • Difficult - A savant could do this with years of practice. Need to beat a 16
  • Impossible - The very rare few could even hope to accomplish this. Risk at your own peril. Need to beat a 20

Like regular DnD, if you roll a 20 you get a Super Success and your roll will be rewarded with something extra. Perhaps you will learn a new skill? Or maybe you find something useful and get to keep it? And if you roll a 1 you get a Super Failure and will be punished accordingly (no worry about character death unless it was discussed and agreed upon, but something bad will happen).

Remember, failure is not always a bad thing. You never know what you will get if you try something.

You do not need rolls in all of your posts. If you need a roll, please let me know and, with the result, I will tell you privately what happens so you can add it in your post. I want ths to be fun for everyone so this may be tweaked as we progress.

Rules For The RP

1: Posting will be done at least once per 10 days. If you wish to post more than once in that time period, you are welcome to do so, but keep in mind others who may need more time to get something up. We do not want to progress so far that we leave others behind
-If you find you are unable to post in that time period, I ask that you let me know. Real life gets in the way and it is understandable

-If you intend to collab on a post, I ask that you try to get collabs done within the 10 day span. If it is going to take longer, perhaps consider making it a Part 1 and Part 2 deal. If that cannot happen, please communicate with me.

2: Be respectful to others. If you find you are having issues with someone else in the RP, I ask that you resolve them in private.
3: This RP will be set in the 1800s during the Regency period. As such, historical issues will come up. Certain groups of people were not treated kindly during this era. Sexism, racism, homophobia, transphobia, etc. are all things that are expected. If you intend to use any of these issues in a post, I ask that you please offer a Trigger Warning. If you find you cannot handle these in the RP setting, I suggest finding a different RP. None of these will be tolerated in the OOC or on Discord.
4: Romance can and will happen but I draw the line at explicit scenes. This is a rule for this RP and well as the Guild overall. If you would like to write out a scene, I ask that you do so in the comfort of a private message. Any scene should fade-to-black before it gets that far.
-This RP is for adults so all players are 18 years old or older. Characters will also be 18 years old or over. If you intend to use a child in the RP as a support please keep in mind the nature of the RP.

5: You are limited to two characters at the start of the RP and they must be from different Affiliations so that there is a balance. After the RP has been going for a bit I may open it up to adding new characters.
-No character can be a part of the Dark Embers at the start of the RP, but who knows what may happen later.

6: Character death can happen, though this will always be communicated with the individual. If your character dies in the RP you are allowed to create a new character.
7: This is a game full of secrets and changing loyalties. I ask that you please not spoil anything in the OOC or Discord so others may enjoy the mystery.
8: Combat will happen. If your characters are in combat, whether between player characters or with NPCs, I expect you to respect each other and determine how it plays out. Your character will win fights. Your character will lose fights. It is just as fun to lose as it is to win.
9: Everyone will have their moments to shine in this RP. If you have a story idea, please share it with me to see how we can incorporate it into the overall plot. I want this to be a collaboration of everyone creating something fun and meaningful.
10: Please add your favorite TV Show or Movie in the Extra's section of the CS to show you have read these rules.
@Passable Writer You (and Mr. Gone) are wonderful
Can someone lovely share where they got the character sheet to fill out? I would be most appreciative :)

The authorities were always unnecessarily rough though he might have deserved it a little bit — he just shot four of their kind in front of them. Grudges were going to be held. However, he was barely bothered by the idea of the authorities being annoyed with his existence since that was something that has been noted for decades.

They didn’t bring him into the court's cells but they brought him into an entirely different building with a holding chamber that was less than pleasant. ‘Time for another trial,’ he rolled his eyes while those words escaped under his breath. Always with the trials. Trials were bullshit in his mind, after almost five decades, and hundreds of trials a year. Roach noticed how unorganized they were with a lack of pattern to laws, especially if someone had money or a good looking face in society.

Councilor Isolde will be visiting you shortly,’ one of the guards said in their monotone ways of informing prisoners.

His face looked disinterested while he looked over at the man, ‘O, goodie. Lucky me,’ he forced a faint smile that was enthusiastic enough to tell anyone that he didn’t care for the company but he knew he couldn’t fight it at this rate. They had stripped him of all devices, weapons, anything that could be used as a weapon, so he didn’t have much on — a slightly baggy undershirt tucked into his pants and his boots. They even took his belt and shoe laces.

There was no reason for him to attack the young councilor though there was every reason for him to kill councilor Geode, if he had the chance, which he doubted would ever happen. Going over to the cold metal bench and sitting down, he noticed a stickiness to his right, and he wiped his hand off on his pants. ‘That’s comforting…,’ he mumbled while staring at the bars of the cell that were reinforced with electricity. They really wanted to keep him in. He folded his arms and decided to wait for the young councilor.

Isolde had some things in the works in the background. After that disaster of a trial she knew she needed to take the reins and establish control from the Council’s perspective. She signed up to provide an exclusive interview to hopefully tamp down on the out-of-control rumors circling, but she knew there would still be people who used this as an opportunity to cause trouble.

And she was all but certain a lot of them would be from the Council.

She made her way through the building’s upper limits and down to where Roach was being held. She made note of the certain…decor that hung about. She approached two of the guards that stood outside and waited for them to open the door and allow her inside. One of the guards gave her a look that asked ’Are yo usure about this?’ and she knew she was never more sure than she was right then. He opened the door and Isolde made her way inside.

She scanned the room quickly, making several notes. Finally her eyes rested on Roach. ”Hello Mr. Vexler. How have you been?” She knew the answer, but needs must.

He leaned back against the cold wall, his body relaxed, ‘I’ve been worse,’ his voice was casual. With all of his life experiences, this was one of his better days, so he couldn’t really complain about it. Not even the part about exposing some of the council for who they truly are.

I don’t suppose you want me to ask you how you are? Or possibly offer to take you out for coffee sometimes,’ he chuckled as he found his own words amusing. ‘What did you want to talk about, Counselor Isolde?’ Roach knew this was a business matter and nothing more. The pleasantries were a waste of time in his eyes. His silver blue eyes looked at her face as a whole, not zoning in on her eyes, or anywhere specific.

”Corruption.”

Isolde let the word hang but a moment before she persisted. ”I’m not about to waste both of our times Mr. Vexler, I respect you too much to pretend. I have long since believed that the powers that be are tinted with malice and silver. I am embarrassed to admit that Council Geode had escaped my notice but I suspected something at the top for a while now. The trial, if one could still call it that, allowed me an opportunity I had to grasp if I had any hope of rooting it out. You helped with your….debacle. Useful, sure, but sloppy. So I come here with an offering: help me investigate the tyranny plaguing our home from those who seek to bleed it dry. I will, of course, compensate you as you see fit. Within reason, of course. I don’t believe you guilty, Mr. Vexler. I believe you to be a pawn.”

The older man couldn’t help the small chuckle that came from him, ‘Corruption?’ he repeated with amusement though he was not mocking her words at all. It was always funny when people wanted to discuss corruption because he would say that he’s pretty sure Dominion has been corrupt since its founding.

Everyone is a pawn, Councilor Isolde,’ he sighed those words out. ‘And you not believing that I am guilty is suspicious to me. I’ve done plenty of things to be guilty of,’ which was true. If Isolde did any background research on the man — she would know or find out that he had been a Green Beret for the Dominion Military Service at a very young age and he deserted his position because of a secretive mission outside of the wall. That mission isn’t public knowledge at all except for its name in his file, Mission Starlight, which no one was allowed to discuss. A very public incident about him happened when his wife and daughter were brutally murdered in his late 20s. A lot of the news outlets were wondering if a scandal happened, if the men that did those horrible things were sent by someone, and so on. Roach went off the deep end and he cleared out all the violent criminals in Qona. And he didn’t get charged for it because he did it under his bounty hunter license — he knew how he could get away with certain things and how to implement them so he didn’t get bit in the ass for it.

And he shrugged his shoulders, ‘I understand, you are young, and you are ambitious, but you need to be careful with what you are getting yourself and possibly others into by even asking such things, Councilor Isolde. Corruption isn’t pretty. You can end up dead and I can too. People that you care about can end up dead because you find a clue that hits too close to someone’s home,’ he knew his words would probably not dissuade her at all. However, he wanted to warn her, because he knew people didn’t always think about how ugly the truth could be or how dangerous the ugliness was.

”You misunderstand me Mr. Vexler. I said you were not guilty, but did not say of what. I know your past and I know you are no beacon of innocence. I don’t claim to be free of any guilt either, but we do what we must when the situation demands it.”

She stood up now and walked a bit around the room. ”Pawns are useful in a game of chess. They don’t move much, but they are often underestimated. If we, as you say, are all pawns, then we help control the board. Unless the other players are cheaters and liars.”

She made her way back to her seat but did not take it. ”You disparage my youth and you are correct, in a sense. Perhaps I view the world as it could be rather than what it already is, but the fact remains that this is rotten at the top and, whether you want to admit it or not, you and I have been used and continue to be so. So, again, I will offer you a chance to help aid me in putting a stop to it. You can say no and I will leave and never bother you again.”

You always have to assume others are cheaters and liars. You never know how far someone will go to win a game,’ he ignored the comments about him not being innocent but he understood she meant innocent for this particular situation. It was a complex situation or maybe it was simple — he was doing what he could in legal means while protecting someone that he cared about. It was all dicy at the end of the day.

Then he looked around the room for a second in thought before letting his eyes land back on Isolde. ‘I never said I wouldn’t help you in your ventures, Isolde…’ he sighed heavily while leaning back more against the metal wall. ‘I told you that you need to be careful.’ Which he wanted to make such a statement… just in case in the future he had to say ’told you so.

Just don’t expect me to be like a dog. I’ve been told I am terrible at learning new tricks.’ he chuckled but it was true. He was very bad at listening to orders when he thought those orders were bullshit. Depending on the situation, you were either getting an earful from him and he was becoming your issue or he would wait until the right time to bite back — exactly what he did with Geode in the courtroom.

Isolde waited a beat. She had second thoughts but she was already here and Roach was her best bet. ”You’ll have to pardon my language Mr. Vexler, but I am not here to have a dick measuring contest with you. I may be young, I may be the people’s chosen Councilor and could lose my spot at a drop of a hat but I am not some damsel needing aid of my prince charming. I understand the danger. Hell, I even relish it as it will only serve to justify my concerns.”

She knew Roach’s past, knew he would not be, as he so eloquently put it, a dog on a leash. ”If I wanted some obedient pup I would go out into the street and give the first person I see their weight in gold. I do not need a blind follower, I need someone who gets results and who has a dog in the fight. I believe you fall into both of those categories.”

The man barely noticed her language except for her excusing herself for it. It wasn’t anything he hasn’t heard before and he’s definitely heard worse than that. A sigh left his lips while he thought about it and he nodded, ‘I’ll aid you in this venture,’ he knew he didn’t have to say it. Say that he would aid her but he had boundaries. She most likely knew that and knew what she can push for and what would be shoved back at her.

She stood up. ”First things first is getting you out of this cell. Unless you prefer to remain in this detritus-filled room for the remainder of the day?”

An indifferent shrug came from him, ‘It’s not like I have anything outside of the cell waiting for me and honestly…’ he looked beyond her to where the guards were positioned. ‘I was considering tricking those guys and stealing their keys, though if you are willingly going to let me out. I’ll take it.’ he smirked a little because he thought it was amusing. The thought of tricking the guards, opening up the cell, and knocking their asses out, but he sadly wouldn’t be able to have that sort of fun today.

Then he stood up and a pop in his back could be heard, ‘Sounds like I am getting old. That metal bench was doing a number on me without me even realizing it,’ Roach began to stretch as he waited for Isolde to make a decision or take an action.

With Roach’s agreement Isolde made her way out of the room, gesturing for Roach to wait but a moment. Once she had the guard’s attention she spoke, ”Gentlemen, by authority of the Council I am taking custody of Mr. Vexler. At such a time in the future we will reconvene to determine if he needs to be placed back in custody or not, but for now his services are needed elsewhere. I trust this will not be a problem.”

With Councilor Isolde’s direct attention, one guard nodded their head, and the other one spoke up, ‘Yes, ma’am, that is fine,’ most of the guards were not trained to go against the councilor’s wishes. The only thing they could do is put it in their daily report before clocking out for the day.

Roach waited until everything seemed fine and he began to approach Isolde . ‘See you later guys,’ he gestured with a half-ass wave while moving out of the cell. There was a subtle glance towards the counselor.’Anywhere you need me or just lie low until you call?’ Roach was curious if she wanted him to do something right now but he doubted it. She seemed like the type of person to consider everything before giving any type of orders.

”As of right now, Mr. Vexler, I have no need of you so you are free to go back to wherever it is you call home. All I ask is that you lay low for the time being. Also, if you have any information on Councilor Geode you are at liberty to share, I would appreciate it, otherwise I will see about gathering such info myself.”

He shrugged his shoulders in more of an understanding way. If he had to lay low, he would go home — to his actual home — and chill out. Probably read something or play a video game or two. Kick some teenagers asses in a first person shooter and age drop on them so they are shocked and puzzled how someone three or four times their age were better at games than they were. ‘Sounds like a vacation to me,’ and he seemed to think about all the information he had on Councilor Geode.

Well…’ he began. ‘That’ll be a very long talk or I can send you an encrypted email of everything that I have done for him and his family,’ Roach spoke somewhat cautiously since his eyes scanned around to make sure no one was close to them. Only the guards behind them which they most likely couldn’t hear the pair.

And he sighed, ‘And that’s about all except the things that he has said when hiring me and so on,’ he added. There was a lot but not much at all depending on what Isolde was trying to find. Finding Geode guilty? With all the information that Roach had, she would be able to figure out some horrendous items and events that weren’t accidents and were directly attached to the councilor.

”Yes, send me the encrypted information and I will work from there. I need to go give an interview to calm the masses. Part of why I need you to stay low and I trust you are good with discretion. When I am ready to proceed, I will call for you and we can meet at a trusted, neutral location.” She wasn’t about to invite the man into her home.

He nodded in agreement, ‘I’ll send you the encrypted information when I get home and I have plenty of neutral-safe locations we can meet at in the future, princess,’ Roach walked up to the doors that would lead him out onto the streets. ‘Is there anything else you need or will that be all?’ The man was not trying to stay in that building any longer than he had to. Though he wanted to make sure she didn’t have anything more to request or ask of him.

Isolde shook her head. ”As of this moment, you are a free man Mr. Vexler. Or as free as one can be here.” She allowed him his exit. She had things to ponder, information to sort, and an interview to prepare for.

Later than,’ he gestured as if he was waving her off with a simple flick of his hand and a dip of his head before disappearing out the double doors and into the busier streets of Dominion.
