So what can you bring to my crew?

Extortion, Counterfeit, Bribery, Deception, Instigation- No, I’m joking really... I do speak a few of the native languages and have an affluent list of contacts and clientele myself. Did I mention I am one of the few around the here that is actually literate? I can plot a course and draw an accurate heading day or night. I’ll be paying my own way so I will cost you nothing.

So, what's your story?

I grew up on these waters. Maybe you’ve heard of my Papa? Yes, him. Courtland Bannister? Do they really call him “the Mantle”? Yes, that’s true too, but he’s retired now, so to speak, so you shouldn’t have to worry about that. You see he never wanted to me to be a sailor and certainly not to become like these wistful whores you see down by docks. No, he taught me that the ship was not a romantic adventurer’s getaway or a criminal’s refuge. It was just another tool to make profits, a business.

You see, the best ‘pirate’ is not the one who is the bravest or strongest or the best navigator: It’s the one who can hold the money and protect the ship… and that’s where I come in. I can provide you a list of references if needed. I keep track of the little things so you don’t have to. Like the deckhand that that’s secretly pillaging your supplies or the first officer who’s skimming a little extra for himself on the side. I take care of that.

How do I manage all that? Well, you’ll find my reputation precedes me and like I said, my services will cost you nothing. I understand you are looking for a crew. I also understand you’re looking for a particularly lucrative sum on your next outing and that is what interests me. I view you and your future crew as a bit of an investment and I take very special care of my investments.

I think @Penny offers a good alternative to going for the whole different world perspective. Whole settings from scratch tend to make for more questions than answers in my experience.

We have a ready-made setting in the historical route that most people are already comfortable/somewhat knowledgeable about. We can use the map idea to make up places/legends as we please for the crew to explore.

There's no reason we have to stick strictly to the gender roles and superstitions of the time period. That's just something else we can tweak to make for a good story. I tend to alternate between male and female characters in my games and was looking forward to writing the female navigator that was suggested. I do a fair amount of navigation in my profession so that role was appealing to me.

I'm pretty much up for anything. Can't say I have a ton of knowledge in the genre. I'm assuming that slots will be divvied up according to crew positions on the ship. I'd like dibs on the navigator.

I think some supernatural would be a good addition for sure. I'm at work as I type this on my phone. This looked like something different for sure. I'll have some time for brainstorming later today.
