Made worse by her tendency to eat food at the appropriate time but at the wrong point in her sleep cycle... at least the other way round would be clearer.
Akio, however, had a question about whether someone might have
eaten the little girl's cat. Not wanting to be as unhelpful to him as he had been to her, she whispered back, "Perhaps the young from other countries or the older residents here, both human and youkai."

Oh, you were meant to shake things that were offered to you. That would explain why you needed to stick hands so far away; otherwise you might face difficulty actually shaking something noticeably. The detective was being quite mean in her opinion, not giving her a chance to do things properly after explaining the important cultural rite.
Then someone else came dramatically in, offering a box of chocolates (thus introducing her to the appearance to go with the meaning of the word) and being oddly flattering. The detective continued his string of being mean by grabbing the chocolates and
eating one before she could take them, but once Ryuuko had the chance...
Face set in a determined expression, the dragon began to shake the box of chocolates like instructed, pausing for a second to ask what a Coatl was.
