Being truly on my own is a bit of a weird feeling. It's never really happened.

Let it never be said that sometimes extreme brevity isn't the most appropriate post, though. Everything is a tool.

Himawari Yuri

Finishing lunch with just the ordinary badmouthing of ill-dressed students was too much to hope for. Of course the transfer student had to come in and get the boss's attention. In sync with the rest of the club, Yuri rose from her seated position--though unlike the others, she didn't even make a move to drop her lunch and shuffled to keep in the club president's blind spot. Happily, this made her fit the stereotypical 'tall, looming henchman' role, like she fit in with the rest of the brainless club members. Maybe there was something in the bleach to make the club so full of bimbos...

Chewing on a piece of egg, she had to disagree with the president on the twintails opinion. Oh, it might not have been the height of current fashion--but there were looks that went with the style, particularly the smaller, childish ones that would go well with Chinatsu's height. Her uniform--who kept the default uniform when they could change to something else?--obviously needed to go first but the hair was fine. If she had the right attitude... that gave the girl an idea of what to draw later.

Once again, someone else in the club got singled out to do the fighting--and thankfully, it was the one with a nickname she could never say right. If she lost, then the only person left with a nickname like that was her and she didn't need to worry about how you pronounced western letters. Why her Rank 0 self had yet to be nominated for one of these fights was a bit of a mystery, though maybe Suzie wanted intelligent conversation now and again.

Yuri didn't have any faith in Lulu's victory. Even if she had the best gear ever, not having a clue how to use your weapon was embarrassing. She should know--acting clueless and losing convincingly was work.
Sir Tyaethe Radistirin

Oh, she could understand the point in keeping the shard's location a secret--far more were those that could be tempted along darker paths that had never gained proper admission to the college, nor sought it in the first place. To not publicise that it had been kept in order to destroy it had doubtless prevented far more theft attempts or what remained of Hidroroth's followers from launching a siege to reclaim the shard by force. To that extent, the secrecy was understandable. Yet to tell nobody outside of this college... to prepare no-one to reclaim it or join the defence if knowledge escaped...

"Yet why not tell us? Why not tell me? You know that not one day in two hundred years have I been lacking in readiness. That I could pursue the thieves without pause. That someone so close to a saint will not be corrupted," Tyaethe spat, pacing in her armour. Agenon had been the headmaster even when she was young; there was no excuse to overlook such things, "But worse than that, what kept you from telling us the instant it was stolen! We nearly caught up to the thieves on what looked like an unrelated mission. If you hadn't kept this from us for a week..."

"No more secrets, old man."

Once this... issue with Livius was dealt with, she would need to get more information from the captain about this mission. Calling her actions 'failed' seemed to be a stretch; as she had tried to emphasise when preparing Fanilly for the role, it was unwise to try and shoulder responsibility for something that was outside of one's own actions. The knights had not been sent out as a scouting party but as a military response. To have gleaned anything from such a change in circumstances was an achievement--they could have been left none the wiser.

First, though, to pre-empt the Sunfield's longwinded explanation: "A cult on the Ithillin and Veldt border has been going around killing anyone with a hint of magic, and worse. Lord Sunfield here seems to think the correct way to deal with this is to use yourself as bait and bring two armies and the knights down on them."

Eating lunch at one of the most noticeable tables in the whole school had never been part of Yuri's plan to avoid notice and stay out of the way of the school's more belligerent lot. No matter how nice the spot was, there was no way that it could justify the trouble that came with sitting there. But for a member of the Fashion Club, eating somewhere else would have been more trouble. On the plus side, eating with the rest of the club when possible was much like curling up next to pride of lions; she would be all the more noticeable a target but not that many people would be willing to start a fight over it.

On occasion, it could still be more trouble than it was worth: Suzume's constant need to give everyone nicknames was just troublesome. Her own, for one, had taken her over a week to work out where the older girl had gotten it from. It would have been easier if the girl had shown some respect, not that it was likely, for other students not being so fluent in English nor so good at speaking it... ironic as that might be.

The tan girl spared a jealous glance at the cutesy food. It wasn't that she wanted such cute food to eat, at all... but could Suzie go just one hour without flaunting her wealth at all costs? Not only did she have access to good, fresh food, she could even get it made with stupid artistic flourishes. Then eat the cute panda riceballs like it was worth even less than the convenience-store lunch Yuri was picking away at!

Had anyone else started acting like beating someone of a higher level was strange--or if she lost her wits and wanted to draw attention to her carefully preserved Rank 0 status--then Yuri might have pointed out that anyone who wanted to advance would try and defeat the higher ranks by definition. Instead, she straightened her bog-standard uniform and went for something that was hopefully somewhere between "vaguely intelligent" and "sufficiently concurrent". "She's a transfer student with something to prove. It could be considered an achievement that she got the right uniform. At least she cares enough about her appearance that she isn't walking around in rags."
@Pandapaw23 That's a fair enough assessment. I will say that even a fighting series does sometimes have large exposition dumps... though in this case, it's really just me making sure every base is covered, so that everyone is clear on what Seirei can do, and failing to be concise in the process.

I'm not going to lie, though, folks. One of my primary concerns was with whether the power is too strong or not, at least compared to the abilities displayed by other characters so far. If I could get some opinions on that, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Yes. Quite excepting that his IES apparently makes him Fate/ Lancelot and 'instinctively a better wielder of any weapon than anyone at the school could be' (seeing as nobody here has had decades of practice) seems like an odd choice for 'magical ability'...

The AED's actual abilities seem to work out as:
1) Super sharp cut
2) Ignore being blocked
3) Super speed/strength/toughness
4) "That wasn't the real me you hit at all!" + teleportation
5) "Attacks from all directions simultaneously"
6) Everything is blurry because of the justification for all this, making it a pain in the ass without the boatload of special techniques.

That's way too many things going on at once, and the power justifying it feels like a cheap excuse afterwards. It can create intangible overlapping clones that take no damage... oh but they can clearly be tangible when it's convenient, i.e. purely for the sake of attacking? That's not clever ability use, that's tailor-making an ability to justify being as strong as possible.

  • Age: 17
  • Gender: Female
  • Appearance:Even a slacker shouldn't leave some things to the last minute. Much to her ongoing frustration, that appearance is all-natural. Not only is it pretty distinctive, she's a shoo-in for "tallest girl in school" due to her ancestry.
  • Personality: When she was younger, Yuri put a lot of effort into doing as well as possible--if you were going to stick out anyway, you might as well try and stand out for good reasons, right? By highschool, her desire to try and avoid attention at all had overcome any desire to do well, plus avoiding the stress. Nowadays, she's a dedicated slacker whose desires are to do just well enough that she isn't in trouble for failing, to be harmless enough that any fights are quick and relatively painless, and to avoid anyone important wherever possible.
She's not so much of a slacker that she won't work if actually getting something done is the path of least resistance--but from the way she tends to snipe about it or point out the stupidity in what she's doing or someone else is doing, you wouldn't begin to guess.
  • Backstory: Oddly enough, though Yuri's parents were both born in Japan, none of her grandparents were--all four of them were from the US. Yet despite the shared family background, those grandparents' mutual xenophilia and her own parents' never having left the country leave her no more knowledgeable about the Western world than the average student. Instead, her interests were generally directed to the world of fashion. The result? Until she realised that standing out in a fighting school was a great way to get even trouble, her outfits tended to make her stand out even more amongst the normal school uniforms.
It was just her luck that her natural appearance lent itself so much to the fashion that she got the Fashion Club president's attention, even while trying to dress in the most unremarkable manner achievable. She isn't sure why the girl wanted her to join the club, but it didn't seem like the sort of request she could get away with refusing. At least it's a club that she would have been happy to join... in a more normal school environment.
  • Inherent Engine Skill: Immovable Object-
Yuri's ability is a simple one: neither she, nor anything she is directly holding, is going to be budged from its position without an incredible amount of force. For most objects, and indeed the girl herself, it would be easier to break whatever isn't moving than have to deal with overwhelming the power itself. She mostly uses it to draw fights out and give the illusion of putting up resistance, rather than seriously put herself in more risk by possibly winning.
  • Active Engine Device: Gravity Shield-
A man-sized riot shield, it certainly isn't an offensive weapon, especially with how Yuri tends to use it, but it's durable, mostly clear, and makes her an utter pain to fight. Not only does it make a very effective obstacle to actually hitting her, it makes gravity in the nearby area much stronger... which makes moving even more difficult. As Yuri likes to point out: it would be a whole lot easier to just not bother fighting in the first place, no matter the outcome.
  • Skills: As expected of someone that would have considered joining the Fashion Club, Yuri does have enough knowledge and skills in the area to not embarrass herself, though her abilities in the field of creating clothing can be explained with one statement: "I once sewed my arm to my leg". It's a bit of a shame that there was no band to join, in her opinion--she's not a half bad drummer. Or artist, but joining an art club was out of the question; she'd burn the drawings before anyone else saw them.

This is what Darius gets for holding two axes so close to the head.
Sir Lancelot

In almost every way that could count, it was a killing blow. The length of the sword and the angle guaranteed that even this giant couldn't simply shrug off the attack as a flesh wound. Regardless of what happened, this Berserker was dead unless magical healing were to be delivered immediately. Yet, defying sense in a way that could only indicate a Servant, he wasn't going to die when killed. Not that needing more attacks to fell him was going to be an issue...

If not for Berserker's sudden attack leaving Lancelot in no position from which to retain his sword and avoid harm at the same time.

The better option was naturally to back away, leaving the sword embedded through the foe's side; even if the wound itself wasn't going to immediately fell him, a two-handed blade thrust through his entire torso would restrict his movement. All the better, since he needed to acquire another weapon immediately and this enemy was the only one around to provide a replacement that wouldn't incapacitate Lancelot's unaware Master unless the fight could be ended in a handful of strokes.

It was why, when the next attack came, the knight rushed forwards and under the danger, trusting his armour to ward off any glancing blows despite the brute's strength, and seized the shaft of one axe. In a contest of strength, Berserker would undoubtedly win... but with two hands, better leverage, and to simply continue his blow beyond its natural motion whilst knowing how to wield the axe better than the madman himself?

An axe versus an axe and the battlefield equalised, Lancelot flowed to capitalise on the sudden change in dynamics: from within his enemy's reach, a cut to the arm. An arm that, with Berserker's size, was an unmissable target. The aim? Not death, not incapacitation--nothing so final from within his reach. Simply to cut through the muscle that allowed him to fight back. With one working arm, it would be a moment's work to decide the battle.

Even a Servant needed a head.

Honoria Sigurddottir

"Oh, but it's not a question of his winning," the musical magician stated, tempo picking up, "Only if he can defeat a Servant before mere skeletons are cleared. Yet from the look of it, doesn't it seem like his opponent will simply prolong the battle no matter what? Your Servant is good, but not a battlefield god."

Money was of no interest to Honoria--perhaps because she had almost none from her constant travelling--but exploring an ancient city? It was an interesting concept. Entirely unknown music, something to warp into spells more potent than her usual fare by its own age... and seeing what magic existed at this time. Something that could surely give insight on modern methods and how to break them apart...
Sir Tyaethe Radistirin

Tyaethe's progress through the college, though noisy and lacking in any form of subtlety--she was by far capable of moving more quietly in armour than she was making any attempt to now--was if nothing direct: the paladin knew exactly where she was going in what seemed to be a fairly labyrinthine building. Though was that any surprise, when the majority of it had barely changed in all the years she had lived in the capital? Even a non-mage would have occasion to venture through its halls.

Exactly where the knight was headed, though, she said nothing about. Doubtless, had anyone less recognisable or less heavily armed been stomping around, someone would have stopped them to ask what their purpose was. In this case, discretion seemed to take over--or maybe a fear that the massive sword being carried would find its way into their bodies.

It was only when Tyaethe and Indrau reached a door, complete with plaque, that the goal was clear: Agenon Albrenton, Archmage and head of the college. A long-serving old man who, when the door was flung open, looked up from his work on sewing sequins to an outfit already every bit as garish as the one he was wearing.

"The shard. Explain."

Lilianna Belwiss

With the return of the other knights, including the Sunfield siblings, the chance of continuing any meaningful discussion fell by the wayside. Indeed, with the captain's return there was no reason for such discussions to continue in as public a venue as this--or remain open to everyone that came by. Too many cooks spoiled the broth and trying to make any plans with all the knights was the very definition of 'too much'.

Instead, the duellist chose to seek out Fanilly, who--from appearances--seemed quite unsettled, though from inspection unharmed by whatever the knights had found since they set out. "I take it that whatever called you away so urgently was unpleasant, Fanilly?"
The sword so recently sheathed was drawn once again; though she had some practice in it for breadths' sake, iaijutsu was far from the focus of Ryuuko's abilities. Then, taking up position by the door, she shifted stance: in a moment's notice, anyone coming through the door would find themselves a good deal shorter. At least there would be no need for a haircut afterwards.

If Bunny didn't just cave in the culprit's chest, she supposed.
