The desire to join an RP instead of run one, but the lack of anything being advertised or open that fits my interests

Why are people posting 1x1 'looking for' threads in the main section, when there's a whole section for 1x1 RP's?

It'd be nice to be able to *play* an RP I'm interested in for once, rather than having to *run* one all the time. Of course, doesn't help that I'm picky about what I enjoy.

Hmmmmm... PM inviting me to an RP on Discord by a user who just joined the site and has no posts? Doesn't sound iffy at all, no sir.

Bio
I've been roleplaying in one form or another since the late '90's. I've played as many tabletop games as I have online ones, and the quality of both has varied wildly. I have an active imagination, and I love immersive, descriptive roleplaying. My genres of choice are sci-fi, and modern-day (with a sci-fi twist). I like RP's that mix reality with fiction, and throw an unusual and exciting twist into an otherwise normal setting - something like Stargate SG-1 would be an example, or Battle: Los Angeles. An almost recognizable world, but with some sci-fi twists. I'm a fan of military and action-based RP's that do this especially, and they are easily my favourite - though I rarely see any that appeal to me enough - all the military RP's are too 'plain', and anything else modern day is usually fantasy or fandom. Or *shudder* school RPs...
I have a lot of fandoms; Transformers, Macross, MLP: FiM, Fallout, Battletech, Ace Combat, and others to varying degrees. But I don't often join fandom RPs because the ones I'm into don't come up, or I am very picky about my RPs and their plots and feel.
I don't play in free, as I find the short posts and bad spelling and grammar infuriating. I like a lot of depth, story, setting and character to my RPs, so am usually found in Casual and sometimes Advanced. Though, usually running my own RPs.
I'm 43 years old, and live in the UK, so I may not be on all the time. I also like playing non-human characters, especially anthro ones, robots or synthetics, or some hybrid of both.
Outside of my RP tastes and hobby; I read a lot of books, play wargames and TTRPGs, make model aircraft and vehicles, and am also a brony and furry. I have been running a large local furmeet group for the last 10 years and have been involved in running a very successful UK MLP convention.
Haha, no problems. He's mostly fine; I would request that you do a little bit of editing to the personal history to break up the text and make it a little bit easier to follow (put in a few paragraph breaks, and some punctuation). If you could also put the section headings on the sheet into bold text too, that would be great :) Otherwise he's pretty good. I'd say the planet he's from is probably on the extreme end of what I'd say fits into the universe, and the character is about as - and this isn't a negative, as I like the way he's shaping up - cartoonish and larger than life in his personality as I'd like things to get, but he's perfectly fine and I'm happy to accept him.
I'm still interested, just a lot of stuff happened while I was asleep, so I gotta catch up on that first. @.@
No worries! There's not really a rush of any kind. We won't be starting for another day or so, as I want to give people a chance to get their characters up and created, and I have to do boring adult things like work and sleep too, so I won't have time to get the IC up at least until tomorrow evening GMT. Although, that's not a guarantee, nor a time limit of any kind.
My character is also now up in the Characters tab, feel free to take a look.
I hope we get some more non-humans too - be a shame to have it as one non-human and a whole group of humans!
Homeworld: Alcherna, an earth-like world with a comfortable range of climates and a rich biosphere. Primarily used for large-scale farming, forestry and tourism, it is a peaceful place that does not have a massive population, but neither a small one. The world is relatively wealthy, thanks both to it's thriving industries, and also the mining on its' moon and other local worlds in the star system. As such, it suffers occasional problems with pirates and smugglers, despite being more toward the core of League space.
Appearance:
Erien normally wears one red ribbon tying her thick hair into a ponytail, and one wrapped around her tail near the tip. She favours bright, primary colours when dressing outside of her Isorlai-variant uniform, or her flight armour. Red and blue are her favourite colours, and are often reflected in the jewelry and personal garments and decoratiosn she wears. Both of her ears are pierced twice, toward the base. She usually wears a simple, small silver hoop and a ruby-red jewelled stud in each.
Erien is approximately 7' 5" tall, and relatively light and slim for an Isorlai. Her voice is quite confident, but feminine and warm at most times, and has a musical quality to it. She carries herself with pride and confidence at most times, and her body language is very expressive. She is an excellent singer.
Personal History: Erien was born on Alcherna, a colony world home to many members of all species of the League. Mainly devoted to agriculture, tourism and recreational purposes, Alcherna was a peaceful place to live, but not an exciting one for a young and growing Isorlai. Like many of her friends of a similar age, she yearned for something more exciting, and was often in trouble for getting into trouble looking for excitement and a thrill. Around the age of seventeen, after a particularly memorable incident in which she and her group of friends were involved in an incident that resulted in serious injuries and considerable financial loss and damage to a construction project, her parents sent her on a six-month trip to her aunt and uncle on the world of Garadonia. En route to Garadonia and in the outer reaches of Alcherna's solar system, the liner she was travelling on was attacked by a mercenary group, hired to kidnap the daughter of an important official, also travelling aboard ship. The ship was boarded by a unit of the mercenaries, while their ships and fighters formed a cordon around the vessel. Erien found herself with the VIP's daughter through a set of unlikely circumstances, and managed to keep both of them alive and out of their clutches for long enough that the systems DefCom patrol forces arrived. Watching through the ships' visual sensors and out of windows, she was enthralled as their fighters duelled with the enemy, and the rescue ship arrived. Once the DefCom forces came aboard, she revealed herself and her now friend to them, and was congratulated for her part in the escape and rescue. The incident had filled the gap in her life, and from then on, she worked to better herself and do everything she could to fulfil the requirements to enter DefCom academy, with the specific goal of entering one of the Aerospace Combat Squadrons.
On her 18th birthday she enlisted, and met all of the requirements. Taking a scholarship, she attended a college on Garadonia and studied galactic history alongside Astronavigation, getting a respectable, but not outstanding, mark in both subjects. Her proficiencies and performance in her Cadet Classes had been exceptional by comparison, and her achievements in the flying and shooting portions of the Cadet classes had gained her exemplary status. On her graduation, she enrolled full-time in DefCom, and through sheer hard grit and determination managed to carve out a name for herself, becoming a steadfast, reliable, trustworthy and determined member of DefCom's forces. Initially rejected for a fighter role, she persevered, and after several rejection letters, was called to her CO's office. After an explanation and a reconsideration, she was given her chance. The Isorlai worked hard, and after contributing to resolving a personal situation with one of her fellow pilots was assigned to a front-line combat squadron, the Diamond Snakes.
Erien fell into a good niche with the Diamond Snakes, further cementing her role as a capable and adaptable pilot. She suffered with shyness and finding her feet in the squadron. While she is a capable pilot and a very intuitive one, she frequently second-guessed herself and doubted her own skills and achievements. After a near-critical incident during an operation against a band of smugglers, she had to find a way past this personal issue after it put one of her squad-mates in danger. Spurred on by a combination of harsh words and confidence by her CO, she managed to get a hold on her issues, cementing her position within her unit.
Serving well within her unit on a number of uneventful tours and standard operations for a further four years, it was only when her unit was deployed as part of a small operations group in response to a Dominion of Harsesis incursion into League space against the world of Corallia. The Diamond Snakes were heavily involved in the combat over Corallia. The Dominion attack was heavier than anticipated, the hostile commander being a canny and cunning individual. The Dominion held back a third of their heaviest force until the DefCom battle group were fully engaged and committed to landing forces on the planets' surface. The remaining third jumped into the battle after the Dominion spacefleet lured the ships and fighters beyond lunar orbit, crippling the DefCom vessels with well-aimed heavy cannon barrages. The fighters were forced to pick up the slack, and it was only through ingenious tactics and daring actions, pioneered by Erien, that the DefCom forces gained enough of a foothold to hold the Dominion back long enough for reinforcements to arrive.
Erien suffered injuries in the battle that lead to her left arm being replaced with a prosthetic from the elbow down, along with other serious injuries. Recovery took six months, during which time the Diamond Snakes had been stood down as a result of accumulated casualties from the Corallia battle. Cleared once again for full pilot status, she accepted a position as squadron commander for a planetary militia unit as temporary duty, remaining there for eighteen months, during which the only 'action' she saw were a handful of flights, scrambled to identify vessels with malfunctioning transponders, or as support for search-and-rescue missions.
At the end of her assignment, she was offered the chance to head her own squadron as part of the new stand-up for a new class of battle-carrier. Despite her own recurring doubts and reservations, she accepted and became the commander of the Wylde Fyre squadron.
Personality: Erien is mostly a confident, charismatic and outgoing individual. Somewhat more accustomed to dealing with other species than many other Isorlai, she tends to be more reserved with her physical contact and emotions than other Isorlai, though sometimes forgets herself when she is excited or otherwise emotionally stimulated. While she is a consummate professional when it comes to her role as a pilot and operative, and takes her role as a squadron leader very seriously, she does still find herself bothered by self-doubt and issues of confidence on occasion. She believes she lacks the experience and knowledge to lead, but this is not reflected in her evaluations or her performance so far, and her commanding officers have done their best to support her and coax her into believing she is more than capable. She leads with intelligence at most times, and a strong sense of bravery and willingness to take on a challenge at most times, it is only the rare occasion she will falter, when faced with something she cannot understand, or relate to.
On a personal level, like many Isorlai she values loyalty, integrity and trust. She gives the same cautiously, and lends the benefit of the doubt to most people she meets and serves alongside. If her trust is betrayed, her reaction will be a mixture of anger, disappointment and dismissal. She will take a long time to forgive anyone who acts in this way, and will always be on edge around anyone who displays such deceptive and dishonest qualities. However, to anyone who does display the qualities she admires, along with being open, honest and genuine, she will often seek to form a strong bond of friendship.
Erien enjoys the company of others, although can be shy and a little awkward at first with strangers. Once she is more relaxed, she can often be highly enthusiastic and excitable, especially about subjects she enjoys, or about learning new things - and especially about teaching them to others. Erien is a voracious consumer of knowledge and information. She loves to read; especially actual books, of which she has a small collection, and reads a wide variety of both fiction and non-fiction. She often tries to apply her knowledge to real life... not always with perfect results. She is a very good singer, although can be shy about performing, and about her talent for it. More physical activities she is fond of include archery, which she learned with her mother. She has no awards for the sport, but is nonetheless more than competent at it.
In combat, she is a fast-moving, agile fighter, either in or out of the cockpit. Her knowledge of historical battles and tactics often come into play in battle, using unexpected strategies and battle-plans. Aside from this, she takes careful note of the strengths and weaknesses on the battlefield, and plans and acts accordingly. As an Isorlai, she has great agility and physical strength, and uses this to her advantage, striking fast and fading away, always mobile and never in one place for a long time. Her combat style while in the cockpit reflects this too.
Gear and Equipment:
Standard Pilots Suit (Isorlai model)
M8 Kenaz sidearm
M54 ABR Carbine
M36 Tactical Knife
M47 Tactical Sword
Fragmentation Grenades
Smoke Grenades
Like everyone, Erien also carries a toggle. You're also likely to find a book on her person at most times too, if she's not in her flight gear. And even then, it's likely if she's not in the cockpit and flying.
Fighter Customisations: Erien's fighter is standard colours, aside from a red and blue stripe on all of the fins, and a diagonal one running from the bottom of the cockpit canopy frame, to the bottom of the fuselage.
Might be interested, but I have a question for you - what sort of in-flight phsyics are we to expect? Are we following hard sci-fi of combat with orbits, or more like a standard flight system? Further, provided we are 'flying' instead of doing armed orbital passes, are we taking a more atmospheric approach (that is, Star Wars-style), or a more fluid system with radical point changes in speed and direction (closer to, say BSG or what Mass Effect suggests a smallcraft would be capable of)?
It doesn't make or break it for me, of course, but having the right understanding of your vision in terms of that stuff would be nice.
I'm in either way.
More like standard movie space physics, but with some realism thrown in. The closest thing I can think of that fits is probably the new Battlestar Galactica, which has consistent momentum and changes in direction, but still uses dogfight-like sequences for its' combat.
As it is, I believe we have a full group anyway, coming over from the Interest Check thread, but we'll see what happens.
starting work, will replace this post when done!
Please post your character straight into the characters tab, and then edit that original post if it needs changes, rather than posting characters in the OOC.
Is it just me that can't get a hold of the Races document? It opens game world info for me :S
Sorry, I must've pasted the wrong link in when I did the post! It should be okay now? Let me know if it doesn't work.
@boomlover@urukhai Well I guess we can just wait for the GM to get back and see what might be wrong. I can say that I am doing a sniper specialist and what planet might you all think to be from?
I wasn't really planning on having unit specializations, as if we have ten people, you run thin on things to specialize in xD However, you are welcome to play a character who is above average in their marksmanship, and uses an accurized rifle as a kind of squad marksman/sniper.
I will also be playing a character who will act as the squadron leader, she is a female Isorlai by the name of Erien.
It is the far, far future. Humanity is part of an interstellar League of Races along with five other species. Living in relative harmony, it has been over two thousand years since the last great war that bought the League together. In the intervening years, there have been smaller skirmishes and battles against other forces, both domestic and foreign. But the League and it's military forces, Defence Command - or DefCom - have grown complacent, resting on their laurels.
But word from the frontier has been increasingly grim and bleak. Colonies have gone quiet, whole towns and settlements of people vanishing almost overnight. Starships found derelict and wrecked, with no sign of an enemy. Mysterious vessels, matching no known model glimpsed skirting the edges of star systems and vanishing before being identified.
No long able to ignore the evidence presented to them, the League deploys an expeditionary fleet to investigate the disturbances. At the head of this is the light battle-carrier Heart of Valour, and aboard it, the 122nd expeditionary aerospace combat squadron 'Wylde Fyre'.
Little do the men and women of Wylde Fyre squadron suspect that they will be instrumental in uncovering the scale of the threat arrayed against the League. An old enemy is stirring in the shadows, drawing forces towards itself and pulling strings of a web they have laid over years and decades. Their work may unravel the League at its' core, and to beat them, the Wylde Fyre squadron will have to come together and overcome both obstacles and enemies around them, and to embark on a journey of discovery and danger to find the key to beating an enemy that almost destroyed civilzation once.
Fighting in all manner of environments agains harsh odds, the squadron will find themselves tried, tested and harassed at every turn. Can they prevail against an enemy older than the League realizes, and one that has faded into myth and legend? And can they manage to uncover and unravel the truth before their enemy grows powerful enough to tear apart the League?
Shadows of Steel is a sci-fi roleplaying game based around the concept of aerospace fighter combat in a far future setting. It is not a hard-science setting, and hard realism is not a priority. The game and its' setting are inspired by a lot of well-known popular science fiction settings, including but not limited to works such as Halo, Star Wars, Mass Effect, Macross, Battlestar Galactica, Stargate SG-1, and many, many more. The emphasis will be on space and atmospheric combat as part of a fighter squadron, though there will be ground operations too, much like the Rogue or Wraith squadrons from the Star Wars Expanded Universe. While the game is inspired by these works, it is not part of any of them, and is a - hopefully - relatively unique setting, and does not follow any lore or storyline other than that I have devised for it.
The player group will take the role of a pilot/operative within Wylde Fyre squadron, on the front-line of activities and combat, as they become intertwined in the ongoing mysteries and conflicts with whatever mysterious force is spiriting people away, attacking ships, and slowly worming their way inward from the frontiers of League space toward the interior.
As well as the ongoing 'main' plot, it is my goal and aim to intertwine characters' personal plots, background and history into the ongoing narrative, making the characters as much a part of events as possible. As such, investing time in the game and having a long-term commitment will be rewarded by a character and player having a greater involvement in things around them.
The game is open for a (somewhat flexible) maximum of ten players, and a minimum of four.
All of the background for the game is provided in a series of Google Docs. Not all of them are required reading, but do provide a great deal of context to the setting as a whole.
DefCom Standard Equipment - Standard military equipment issued to DefCom forces, select your character's equipment from here.
Additionally, here is some information about the route to becoming a fighter pilot in DefCom, and the expected daily routine and organization of DefCom as it pertains to fighter pilots. There is also information on their duties, and their daily routine, how missions are carried out, and other such information.
The GM has control of the overall direction of the plot. Please run any ideas you have to change things, or introduce a new idea or concept, to the GM.
Equally, forget any pre-conceived notions or ideas from other games or fandoms. This setting stands alone from them, and has its' own rules, concepts and ideas.
Players may only play one of the races listed and created, no other races are permitted. Furthermore, players may only play one of the six League Races, not any of the hostile ones.
Furthermore, Players may only play as a pilot of the Wylde Fyre squadron, not as any ground or support personnel, ships' crew, or other roles, as the focus of the game is on fighter operations and action. Not anything else.
If you wish to drop out, then have the manners to let me know. If anyone goes without posting either IC or OOC for more than seven days, they will be considered to have left the game. Any drop outs or ditchers will not be permitted to return, unless it was for an unavoidable reason, or discussed in advance on the OOC or with the GM in a Personal Message.
If you have to take a break for any reason, then similarly to above, let me know. Unless, again, it is for unavoidable reasons.
If your posts are being held up by someone elses' tardiness in posting, it is better to get a post of your own up than to wait. Otherwise, you'll end up missing out, and the game will end up dragging on one scene, rather than moving on.
It is not my job to remind anyone to post. If you want to be involved in the game, then post. I will not have any sympathy for anyone who 'forgets to post' or is 'too lazy' to keep checking the thread for updates. If you're excited enough to join, then you must be excited enough to keep checking the thread.
While the game is one of drama, high-stakes adventure and a pervasive, deadly threat, it is important to keep things with a level of levity, excitement and escapism. I'm not looking for a grim, dark, gritty and brooding setting that is a constant grind. I run and play games for excitement, escapism and to lose myself in fun and adventure. If every post is a miserable (w)angst fest of ludicrously miserable proportions, I'll quickly lose interest. This game is about playing the part of daring, brave, and righteous heroes; live up to it and enjoy it. There will be drama, darkness and tense moments - but they are not the pervading themes.
While there are no real restrictions on what kind of character you may play, there's little fun in having a group of brooding, miserable anti-social losers loners that won't talk to each other. You might have the most moving and amazing back-story in the world... but if you never have anyone to talk to about it, it'll remain a secret and no-one will ever hear about it. Similarly, no-one likes a bragging, superior and self-obsessed idiot. Try and aim to have a character who is balanced with their personality and flaws, rather than being 100% either way.
Equally, if you play a character who spends all their time being mean, hateful and insulting to everyone? Don't be surprised when no-one wants to have anything to do with your character, and they spend all their time being shouted down and insulted back by everyone else.
And if you play a borderline psychopath/sociopath who's only real desire is to hurt everyone, destroy things, and generally cause as much mayhem and violence as possible, expect to find your character in a psychological evaluation or in prison.
I'm not impressed by how much real science you know, nor how many military acronyms, systems, and jargon you know. This is a science-fiction role-playing game. Realism is generally quite flexible, and there is a level of consistency that I'll be aiming for. However, this is by no means a hard-science game. It is a game of fun, and where the rules of dramatic licence and rule-of-cool are always the primary ones to be obeyed.
...Although, as an addendum to the above there is a certain level of realism expected to be adhered to; DefCom is a military organization and is very much close to a modern-day military. There are rules and regulations, expected ways of doing things and all of the reasons for those things exist in this setting. All characters would be expected to have enlisted in and passed through the DefCom Academy and subsequent flight school to get to their position and level of experience.
No encyclopedic knowledge of real-world aircraft operations is needed, but some familiarity or understanding of how a modern fighter squadron works would be a good basis, as it is what will be used as a reference point for the day-to-day lifestyle, organization and tactical operations of the squadron we are playing as a part of.
Please post any submitted characters into the Characters tab, rather than the OOC. Any edits needed can be done to the original post.
Please remove the notes after the headings when submitting your sheet, unless it is a WIP.
Character Name: Age: Minimum of 21 years (this is to avoid tedious 'anime wonder child' tropes, and to present a somewhat realistic portrait of someone who could have realistically learned to pilot a sophisticated aerospace craft and enlist and subsequently pass through military training.) Race: Any of the six League Races Homeworld: Come up with something. Maybe even collaborate with another player! Appearance: What the character looks like, a description or picture. Descriptions might be a lot easier for some of the alien races. Personal History: A short description of their life to the point they ended up in the squadron, (including a mention of their time in the academy and enlisting to join DefCom) Personality: A short description of their dominant character traits Gear and Equipment: The normal gear carried on their person while on a mission, chosen from the Equipment sheet. Fighter Customisations: Any personal flair and custom paint job done to their Sabre fighter
Optional: Character Theme: A piece of music associated with the character, something that gets across the 'vibe' of the character.
DefCom tactical Aerospace units use a rank system identical to the United States Marine Corps. This list shows the player, their current character, race, characters' gender and any specialization and rank of the character. All characters unless otherwise noted start at the rank of first or second lieutenant, promotions will be forthcoming during play.
RainDash - Nyx Miles - Female Terran - Engineering Specialist
Natsucooldude - Gurjan Wallon - Male Isorlai
HopelessIncubus - Nicholas “Shade” Cavernmaw - Male Isorlai
Mifuyne - Adam Mallory - Male Terran
The game is organized like a TV series, as that is the inspiration and the general 'feel' I am aiming for. Each mission represents an 'episode' of the show. Missions form 'story arcs' that feed into an overall 'season' with it's own story arc. The final mission would represent a multi-part episode as a finale. Each season will ideally consist of 3-6 episodes, depending on how things go. There will obviously be an end to the original storyline at some point after a certain amount of seasons, but there's no reason why, if the game goes on long enough and is popular enough, that there can't be a new antagonist and storyline that arises.
When we have enough missions and stories under out belt, this area will be for recording what's happened so far.
As I've had a lot more interest than expected, I might be willing to extend the numbers; I'm just wary of people dropping out quickly as has happened in other games I've run. I'm not implying anyone in particular will, just that it's something that tends to happen, and I'm keen to be able to put some energy into developing character-related plots and back-stories with people who stick in for the long-term.
The plot kinda reminds me of an interstellar version of Gundam AGE. Which is a bad thing, but I'm sure you can't do much worse than the hacks that wrote it.
With a back-handed compliment like that, how can I go wrong :P But more seriously, I haven't seen AGE, so any comparisons are coincidental. And the summary I gave above is exceedingly rushed and very lacking in detail, so I'm sure it'll be very different to AGE when it gets going, and I can give a more detailed explanation.
Also, manufacturing an enemy to unite against... Smells of really scummy politicians.
I can see how you'd take that idea from the summary, but the enemy is quite definitely real and not manufactured. It's more that within the government there are individuals and groups who may have known more about what was coming, or have their own agendas and can turn the fighting of a war to their own advantage for all sorts of reasons.
I've almost drawn all the OOC docs together, so the thread should be going up later today.
Eight players is/was my maximum count, and I think we've reached that, so it depends on who stays in or drops out at this stage, especially once I get the OOC up - I'm sure some people might decide to drop out if they don't like the story or setting particularly, or don't find a race they particularly want to play. Though, I'm hoping there'll be enough to appeal to everyone.
I am currently working on getting everything up so it can be up soon and so peoples' excitement doesn't disappear, and so we can at least get character creation started quickly.
To give you a hint on the story and setting, it is heavily inspired by Halo, Mass Effect, Star Wars, Battlestar Galactica (the newer series), Stargate SG-1 and many, many more things along a similar vein. It is a quite clearly sci-fi setting, with numerous races co-existing peacefully in an interstellar alliance. Over a long time of relative peace, they have grown somewhat complacent. When an enemy long thought of as gone and thought of as a myth to scare small children with returns - or so it is assumed - it's up to a fighter squadron and the ship they're on to piece together pieces of an ongoing puzzle over two thousand years old or more to work out how and what's going on, and how to stop it. And many signs point to there being some kind of deeper, darker conspiracy at hand that may stretch into the interstellar governments' organization itself.
With numbers and time against them, and little information to go on, and thrown from one battle to another, the squadron will end up having to balance the increasing odds, the information they find out. And as they find out more, they draw more attention from the forces - foreign and domestic - arrayed against them, for better or worse.
