Current I mean, some people want to do it for the reason it’s supposed to be for, but it being all but outright mandatory, well.

@Ricky: I never thought about it like that, but it really can be, huh? I checked out the Mormons for a stint, and I can 100% see that being a reason behind them pushing that.

Tricks them into thinking it was their choice, when it was structured for them to fail.

The Amish doing that strikes me as a psychological way to keep people there. Isolate them > send them out > get culture shock > return to the comfortable rather than figure out a foreign culture.

Ashifa: Shoving/forcing the religion on someone isn't what Christianity should be about. I'm sorry if/that that's what's going on for you.

@Kirah
Many thanks, our story mastermind!
And thus the madness begins! >:-D

If anyone wants to do a collaborative post, let me know! Heads-up, though: I haven't done one before.
Zaylin gawked at the school building as her grandmother expertly drove beyond the grand entrance gates. She had seen a brochure in her research on the place, sure, but the pictures she found did the actual thing no justice. The building itself held an ancient air about it, as if time had decided to stand still for it and it alone. There was so much land, so much room to roam! And then there was the lake, now shrouded in a dark shadow of mystery and murder… or so the papers said.

“Sorry I can’t stay,” her grandmother said sadly, pulling behind one of the many other cars already parked there as parents and students alike entered the building. She looked in her early twenties, the neckline of a purple blouse showing off her shoulders and its flowy sleeves draping downward.

Zaylin shook her head. “It’s fine. Really.” She offered the woman a smile, her dark lipstick making her face look paler than it really was. She quickly got out of the car, leaving the front door open.

“If you forgot anything, let me know.” Her grandmother watched as the girl gathered her bags from the backseat. “And don’t forget about you’re other studies,” she reminded sternly.

Zaylin rolled her eyes. “I won’t, Gram!” She reached through the cab and gave the woman a quick hug and final farewell, then joined the others trickling into the building.

She returned the headmistress’ warm greeting before following the other students who looked like they knew where they were going. She kept near the walls, the tails of her usual long coat flaring slightly as she stayed out of the way as well as she could as she took in the majesty of the building.

She stepped to the side of the doorway of the gym, taking in the number of students and teachers mulling around, their conversations echoing around the room as friends greeted old friends. It looked like a hundred students, if even that, a strange sight after her overcrowded school back in California.

Despite the many lighthearted conversations, an aura of fear lingered in the room, the topic of the recent murder spoken in a few hushed whispers Zaylin caught as she made her way to a seat, her attention shifting curiously toward them.

After the headmistress gave her speech, Zaylin hung back as students rushed to find their schedules in a mad heap. Once the crowd up front died down, she found her folder and quickly looked over her room assignment and schedule.

Art! she thought, fingering the schedule her grandmother had set up for her. She does love me! Suppressing a grin, she folded the papers, shoved them in a pocket of her pants alongside the key, and headed out of the gym to search for the dorms, eager to deposit her bags.
@RainbowReindeer

That's great, on all accounts! :-) That's one of the awesome things about the internet: you can meet some interesting people that you never would have otherwise.

And yes, yes they are. So is this guy. -->
@RainbowReindeer

Doing well! :-D Yourself? I like how you did the nose on your smiley. It kind of makes me think of Pinocchio.
@AutumnFrost I'd be interested in your "Of Men and Elves" plot.
@McHaggis@Kirah The first OOC page looks AMAZING! Kudos, guys!

@RainbowReindeer *Waves vigorously* HELLO!
Zaylin Calina Devonshire

Basic Info

Age: 15, but turns 16 on Halloween. Year: 10—Sophomore

Appearance: Favoring the gothic style, Zaylin has naturally paler skin and eyes so honey brown they almost look gold. She always wears a pair of skull earrings, and often wears this coat, whether it’s actually needed or not, and always wears a pair of combat boots.

Creature / Power

Dragon-hybrid. She is capable of turning into a hybrid black dragon. She can choose to what degree she transforms (how much dragon to how much human) and has a longer lifespan than the average human, ageing slower. She is also capable of controlling fire and air while in human form and has slightly greater speed, senses, strength, and agility. In her dragon-hybrid form, since she takes the form of a dragon connected with the night and darkness, she also has control over darkness/shadows.

Personality

Somewhere between a Goth and a Nerd. Given the title “goth” courtesy to her favored style of dress and makeup, though she sometimes tends to be a loner, she is, quite contrary, usually a helpful person happy to aid others. However, she can be rather proud, and hates asking for help. She has a bit of a temper and a vengeful spirit, and can hold a grudge for years, but since it became necessary to try and keep her anger in check or risk losing control of her elemental abilities, she tries to be more of a “quiet angry,” dealing out her vengeance more in thought than action. She is passionate about her studies, loving to read and learn, and often spills her heart out into drawings and writings. Though she usually follows rules when disobeying them would bring about extreme consequences—such as her grandmother’s wrath—she is a curious girl who can’t help but question their existence, and even push their boundaries, if not completely break them. She also has an affinity for precious and shiny items, favoring precious/semi-precious stones, jewelry, and old books.

Biography

With her parents dead shortly after her birth, Zaylin grew up with her grandmother. A mysterious woman who looked more like someone in her mid-twenties instead of someone of nearly sixty, she brought Zaylin up honoring her parents as well as possible.
For most of her life, Zaylin grew up normally, besides noticing a distinct lack of aging in her guardian. She went to school like everyone else, her grades rarely, if ever, falling below an “A.” She made friends, had crushes, and both loved and hated the normalcy of life. Until she turned thirteen.
A couple days before her birthday, her grandmother finally sat Zaylin down and told her of her heritage. Her family descended from a long line of dragon hybrids, and her grandmother expected that it would soon show itself in the young girl.
With the girl ecstatic with the prospect of what she could do, her grandmother began training her in more than the simple math and science of her schools. The woman began to show a tougher side Zaylin had not experienced before. She taught her about magic, and other creatures most of the world deem mythical that she may one day encounter. Zaylin trained in fighting, even taking up fencing in school until her grandmother decided she could teach Zaylin better than their instructors.
When she turned fourteen, her dragon blood finally revealed itself. She became stronger beyond what her grandmother’s training could have brought about. Through various attempts, she also discovered her ability to turn into a hybrid-dragon, and control over air and fire. Over about the next year, through a few mishaps in school which involved a couple evacuations and firetrucks (though they never pinpointed her as the cause), she quickly realized she had to gain more control over both her emotions and abilities.
As her freshman year came to a close, she received a letter from Northwood Academy, inviting her to attend their school.
Having attended it in the past, her grandmother happily jumped on the opportunity to send Zaylin to such a highly regarded school, despite the reported death of the previous year. As her grandmother put it, “Things like that happen. You can’t fear the world because of one bad thing. It’d be like throwing out an entire bag of pistachios because you found one rotten one. Besides, I doubt the girl was part dragon.”
Though she protested, not wanting to leave behind the friends she had, she wisely went along with her grandmother’s wishes and transferred schools for her sophomore year.
And thus, she began her adventure as she attended Northwood Academy for the first year.
