That would work, but it would be hilarious if the teacher never even said that Beryl was a guy or a girl. Whether by accident or for their amusement is up to you.
Just to make sure:
If it wasn't clear, only a few people and the teachers know that Beryl is a guy, the rest of the school is completely unaware if he is either gender
