27 years old today. Only three years of my 20s left. Where did all that time go?

So apparently, if you use a tooth with a filling in it to chew toffee, the toffee can become sicky enough to pull the filling out.

"Alive and well." Jor'eth confirmed, having had the Urbot placed in a separate cell in the brig when he learned that Quintus was keeping it in his pack. "...For now, at least." The Di'mun added with the dangerous kind of grin his species was known for. "As for later... Well I'm still having trouble deciding that." With a flash of fire and brimstone, a signed contract appeared floating in mid-air above Jor'eth's hand. "You see, the contract we have with Pasha Arlox only dictates what it is we are to do with you, Cho-Tyrek. That is to say, return you to the Ashen Knives alive if possible and dead if necessary... But no mention was made of the Urbot. Neither in the wording of the contract, nor the negotiations leading up to it." There was another flash as the document subsequently vanished in a manner similar to how it arrived. "So we have a bit of wiggle room on how to deal with her."

Jor'eth brought a hand to his chin then as he adopted a thoughtful demeanor. "The simplest course of action would be to hand her off to the Knives along with you. I'm sure they'd be grateful to us for bringing them the target you missed... Though would that gratitude come in the form of something beneficial to us? Possibly. Possibly not... Taking her to the Guild of Engineers would guarantee such a thing though. They have a standing bounty on escaped Urbots, after all... Though perhaps you don't like either of those prospects. Perhaps you would prefer something a little different. Perhaps something like... us handing your little friend off to Conclave 01 would be more to your taste... Personally, I don't enjoy the thought of that at all. Far too-" The Di'mun shuddered in disgust at what he was about to say. "-altruistic for my liking... Though I could be tempted to go that way if someone were to somehow make it seem less like an unpalatable kindness to me." Jor'eth turned to look directly at Cho then. His eyes faintly glowing with an unnatural reddish hue as he spoke. "Tell me, Cho. You've given up much for that Urbot. Your job. Your way of life. Very soon your very life itself... Which begs the question..."

A third flash of fire and brimstone heralded the arrival of another contract. This one unsigned.

"How much more are you willing to give for her sake?"
Nope.
I'll go with Strength.
The scroll opens easily enough. Its contents are quickly revealed to be a letter written in the Ignan dialect of Primordial.

Flicker,

I trust this missive finds you well, it is good to hear from you again. You asked that I delve into the nature and designs of the night hag Nanna May Midnight and the curious gifts she bestowed upon your party. After many long watches by candle and lantern in my quiet hermitage, I submit the fruits of my labors.

Nanna May Midnight and the Soul Trade:
Nanna May has earned a notorious reputation throughout the Lower Planes as a broker of souls. Her cruelty is matched only by her cunning, for she derives delight from perverting the very virtues of those she ensnares—turning mercy into wrath, temperance to gluttony, hope into despair. Beware, then, that any spark of goodness she touches may slowly twist into its darkest opposite.

Abandoned Towers and False Rewards:
She presides over a scattered network of desolate spires—much like the ruined tower you and your companions cleansed—each serving as a silent stronghold for the tiny, fanatical cults she cultivates. When valiant adventurers like yourselves shatter these fledgling sects, she appears—ever gracious—and pours forth lavish gifts, seeds of overreliance sown with a smile. Yet know this: such generosity is no kindness, but the first whispered promise that will bind you ever tighter to her will.

Her Coven and Allies:
Nanna May does not toil alone. She communes in secret with two sister hags: a bheur hag of the frozen Northlands, whose breath chills the heart, and an annis hag lurking near the canals of Acquascura, whose malice flows as swiftly as the city’s tide. Alas, my inquiries into their schemes have only scratched the surface. We must remain vigilant, for this triumvirate is certain to weave darker plots yet unseen.

Your new trinkets and baubles, though beguiling, bear no immediate curse—rather, they may prove of genuine use in your travels. Yet take heed: it is precisely this perception of harmless utility that lures one deeper into dependency. Let not your comrades grow overfond of these gifts, lest the day come when Nanna May’s subtle strings compel you to dark deeds you would never otherwise countenance.

May the ancient stars guide your path, may your heart remain unbowed, and may the master of our world find amusement in your success.

In solitude and service,
Bharahem

Miss Light

"Hmm..." Miss Light hummed thoughtfully at Morgran's words. Perhaps he was right. Perhaps the drawings were just there as some kind of decoration. He seemed pretty confident about it himself... But then why were they all pointing at each other? It seemed like an odd detail to add for no reason. Miss Light followed the pointing to see if it would lead her to a conclusion of any kind. The swan was pointing at the griffin. The griffin was pointing at the axe. The axe's handle was pointing at the goblin. The goblin was pointing at the rabbit with the unicorn horn. The rabbit's horn was pointing at the treant. The treant was pointing at the apple. And the arrow in the apple was pointing back at the swan.

After going in circles for gods know how long though, Miss Light eventually concluded that she wouldn't be able to crack this mystery for the time being. If there even was a mystery to crack at all. After eating and drinking a little more, Miss Light began reading the map in earnest. "What do you think about heading to Silversong Lake next?" She asked the dwarf.

Modern Horror. In particular, aiming to emulate modern horror stories/films. If you don't know who Burt Gummer is, he's a reoccurring character in the Tremors franchise and basically a Monster Hunter. So when I say "No Burt Gummer", it's because I don't want the sole focus to be "there it is, let's kill it".

Rest assured, I'm not planning on making anyone like that. As I said before, my guy is going to be the physically weakest player character in favor of focusing on Smarts and Spirit. The closest he is likely to come to the scenario you just described is "there it is, let's reason with it".

Which brings me to my next clarification: It's not that the islanders don't question supernatural happenings, it's that they don't really acknowledge it, at most dismissing things with "plausible explanations". People who somehow claim stranger things aren't taken all that seriously. Figuring out why is meant to be part of this adventure. A player character who already knows what's up and has many adventures under their belt doesn't really mesh with that.

Would taking Doubting Thomas as a Hindrance clear that up?

I'm getting worried you're starting to metagame and build a character to "win".

I'm willing to admit that it's entirely possible I'm doing that unintentionally. I do derive most of my enjoyment of games from at the very least not losing.

The veteran edge. I've looked it up, and the wording suggests (to me) it's meant for a setting different than what I'm going for here.

What exactly is sort of setting that you're going for? Because in a setting where "the supernatural is a regular occurrence, fatalities and all" and "Survival is the priority" as the reddit post put it, I feel a case could be made that someone who lives to see 87 under these conditions could reasonably acquire such an Edge in that time.
