Elly closed her eyes. Vanity’s fucking emptiness. No one ever ran that card. It's a real headache, but at least it’s not Fossil Dyna Pachycephalo. Fuck that card. She took a deep breath as she drew, subtle enough so that her opponent wouldn't be able to see. Maybe she could turn it around if she played her cards right...

Dead draw.

Amazing.

"You're a real piece of work, you know that?" Elly put a hand on her head to contain her oncoming headache. Speaking much softer now, "that should have cost you the game." Against anyone else it probably would have cost him the game, but boy oh boy is she fucked. So much for an impressive entrance, so much for being hailed in as a prodigy or a natural. What would father think?

Well, she know what she thinks, and what she thinks probably isn't what actually happened.

Elly sets a monster and another face-down before crossing her arms. "Listen up you blithering god-damned furry, I can't afford to lose to scum like you, so if you insult me by holding back like I'm some kind of pitiable child again, I will get this feculent shithole destroyed even if I have to bury it myself. Understand?" She doesn't wait for an answer. How rude of her. "It's your turn. Don't keep me waiting."

Ink and Elena actually have last names, but I figured that, as with normal fire emblem characters, they aren't normally important enough to bring up.

Ink is a nickname too.

Sorry to say I've been absurdly sick all week and unnecessarily busy besides.

So sick

We're talking 3 hours of tired consciousness, woozy-all-day runny nose fever headache levels of bleh.

That first part was probably to counterbalance my insomnia, since for some reason earlier this week, a night of uninterrupted sleep started meaning 3 hours. The rest is probably just my weak immune system. I have the constitution of a dead horse, but that's probably to be expected since I've eaten ramen daily and fruits or vegetables about twice a year over the course of a decade or so.

I don't expect to live past 40 or 50, but it's worth it.

Ink

Personality: Ink is a nonchalant guy with a highly addictive personality. He tries to be cool and collected, but he tends to be too impulsive. He has a weak conscience and is somewhat untrusting, but he has a proclivity to chivalry or even kindness. Neither of these traits translate well to moral principles.

Biography: Ink was born to a prestigious noble family with a close relationship to the local royalty. As family tradition dictated, Ink was trained from a young age so that one day he may join the long line of Paladins in their family to have served as part of the royal family’s personal guard. (Note that “Paladin” here does not refer to Cavalry) It was a prestigious position. So prestigious in fact, that on a trip outside of town, his family’s caravan was attacked by cultists. Ink was knocked out as soon as the attack began, when their entire cart was flipped violently.

He awoke to a sharp pain in his chest where he found a marking of an eye over his heart. The carriage was in tatters and the horses were slaughtered. Blood stains with no bodies to claim them littered the place, and amidst it all was his parents. He didn’t recognize them at first, horrifically mutilated, but as he came to examine the scene, it became undeniable that it was them. By the time he had woken up, everything was already over and done with, and he had nothing left to do but grieve his losses and walk home.

It wasn’t long before Ink discovered that the marking of an eye was more than a simple brand of shame, but the indication of a curse, demanding mana as sustenance and making him soak it up like a sponge. At first he thought it was just hunger, but he had to admit something was wrong when he failed to resist the urge to eat his smaller enchanted weapons.

(Amusingly, he had absolutely no problem eating and digesting them.)

He visited the King, in search of a solution to his plight. The King, still a family friend, obliged, leveraging his access to some of the most talented mages around. While they helped him understand the curse’s mechanics, not a single one could lift the curse.

Ink learned to live with the Curse, getting candies enchanted as part of simple grocery shopping. These innumerable enchantments exacted a considerable toll on his funds. While his family was rather well-off, he had no income, and it was for this reason Ink decided to get a job. As a walking black hole for magic, he couldn’t exactly work around mages, so he settled for a simple job working for the city’s merchants. This went well until he realized how poorly it pays in comparison to his overall spending. Eventually he quits, deciding it’s not worth his time and effort and begins going on long, winding walks looking for a job that pays more. During one of these walks, he bumps into a foul-tempered mage who attempts to shoot lightning at him. He punched the mage and headed on his way, but apparently someone witnessed the scene and made a very generous offer for the assassination of a certain wizard. His morality had sent itself off on a blazing funeral pyre, so he took up the offer.

All things considered, it wasn't that difficult walking into the place and stabbing the old man as he gawked confusedly at Ink, wondering how he got there without being magically detected. He wasn't even aware he was being assassinated until it was too late, as he was busy cutting himself with a fancy knife for some ritual assumably involving the blood circle on the wall and the live goat leashed in the corner of the room. Ink didn’t pay the whole set up in mind, and indeed, he only planned to get in and get out, but when he felt the shining presence of mana sitting on the dagger’s tip, he couldn’t help but have a taste.

If he wasn’t already, the taste of coalesced magic instantly had him hooked. He was taking this dagger home with him, for sure.

Though Ink never found out the exact reason he was spared, if it was to deter him from becoming a Paladin, it worked. He took up a wide variety of work over the years after that, most of it aimed at exploiting his curse, more often than anything else however, he simply stole magic shit to feed his insatiable hunger.

Eventually, outrealm demons made an appearance and in accordance with a visiting recruiter, the King decided to send some of the best warriors he could without compromising his city’s own self-defense. Knowing Ink’s curse and upbringing, the King sent him a request. While the royal guard of his own world seldom saw action and had painful memories attached, joining a different active military and getting access to the support of its clerics and mages seemed like a good idea. If for no other reason, it gives him a reason to use his dagger, dubbed the Inkwell, to get another indescribable taste of mana.

Elena

Personality: Elena is generally cool but not cold, though it’s not hard for one to see her that way. She’s calm and her facial expressions appear insincere, making it easy for her to seem apathetic. She’s no stranger to a smile, but her expressions never really reach her eyes. Except of course, for her best friend, a very large polar bear named Bärenfröst. She has a tendency to speak slowly, without urgency, and often does her best to enforce cordiality.

Biography: Elena hails from the Ice Tribe, a nation situated at the top of a mountain in the kingdom of Nohr, which is ruled by the charismatic if philandering King Garon.

Elena was born and raised a member of the Ice Tribe, daughter of a highly accomplished warrior. Though he’d never tell Elena himself, her father really wanted her to be a boy. A gruff and hot-blooded man, Elena’s father wished for nothing more than a son to train up and succeed him as a warrior. He and his wife had difficulty bearing live children, and as Elena’s mother came to achieve complete infertility, Elena’s father decided that he had no other choice but to train Elena up to be this warrior.

Elena is and always was short, even among girls her age. She had difficulty lifting most weapons, and in general was overall frail. She wasn’t exactly an ideal pupil for her father, and Elena herself didn’t want to become a warrior anyways. This changed however, when she was one day introduced to one of her father’s friends, another warrior of the Ice Tribe. This warrior happened to be a Beast-Rider, and that day, Elena had a fateful encounter with the small and fluffy child of this man’s ursine mount. “It’s a shame,” he taunted her, “that you don’t want to become a warrior. This fella’s going to be trained to aid the Beast Riders of the Ice Tribe in battle one day.”

Perhaps it was impulse, but to this day, Elena never regretted becoming a warrior for Bärenfröst. Once her decision was made on that day, Bärenfröst was declared hers, and they grew up together, even if Elena had help taking care of him. All that was left was to train up into someone worthy of the gloriously fluffy beast he would become.

While Elena had great difficulty stepping up to the plate she had erected, her father leveraged the patience to match, as, over the years, she developed the skills to fight with a knife in spite of her slight frame. At the same time, the Beast Rider who quickly went from ‘father’s friend’ to ‘family friend’ would train Bärenfröst and Elena for riding and fighting in unison.

Years passed and Elena eventually became a fully fledged warrior of the Ice Tribe, and the smallest at that, while Bärenfröst became the Ice Tribe’s largest mount. Some might say they were mismatched, but neither could work with any other.

While the Ice Tribe’s military isn’t usually very active, Elena and Bärenfröst found themselves in a few battles as outrealm demons started to appear, even in places as remote as her home. When word of a force recruiting those that would fight against them spread, Elena decided that it was part of her responsibility as a warrior to respond against such a threat and write her own story of heroism just as her father did before her.

Elly shakes her head before reaching into her pocket and pulling out a lollipop. "Are you done yet? You know, it's annoying to go on and on when everyone you're talking to just wants you to shut up." Elly stretches out her hand and a trap card is revealed: Curse Transfer. Vanity's Emptiness begins to glow and then shatters, its sparkly white pieces floating into and being absorbed by Curse Transfer. "This trap negates Vanity's Emptiness and destroys it." She leaves out the part where it applies Vanity's Emptiness'effect for herself, negating Box of Friends, but it'll be gone at least.

Yosenju Tsujin attacks Elly directly. Elly refuses to flinch as her hair flies backward, maintaining a hostile grimace. She reaches out again and activates another card. "I activate Dark Horizon." From within the card, a doll of some sort seems to crawl out of the card, though not in pieces this time. "Meet Alice, the Wandering Doll." Alice bats away hair on her face as if to exemplify her fake humanity.

Elly finally takes the wrapper off of her lollipop and tosses it on the ground, putting the lollipop in her mouth with a sour expression. "A sistine chapel of a hole in the ground is still just a place to dump your garbage, but I guess that would suit someone like you." She bites the lollipop top off and tosses the stick on the ground. "Are you done yet?"

Elly rolls her eyes. "There's limits to my ability to humor stupidity, you know. Only an idiot would thank someone for trapping them, or think they could do some damage against me with a pathetic offensive like that!" Elly's face down flips up to reveal a box full of toys, which shatters under Yosenju Kama 3's blade. The box itself is destroyed, but the toys inside it scatter on the field, then start to glow. "Would you look at that. You hurt my Box of Friends." The toys shift into broken doll parts, large enough to be mannequin-like. "Look at what you've done to this poor doll. Why, if I were it, I would never forgive you~"

Elly smiles. "I guess you'll just have to finish her off before she haunts you to death!"

Elly was speechless for a short, fleeting moment. Once that moment ended, she couldn’t help but laugh derisively. “Ahahahaha! You must be retarded!” Elly drew her cards, looking them over with a fiery excitement. “A real shame I got stuck with a weakling like you. I can only imagine how much better that partner of yours is, but I guess I can’t blame him for not wanting to be around someone who thinks pitfall traps are worth shit!” Elly sets one monster and three face-downs. “Fight me!”
