I would suggest that its something like a boost in a certain aspect like speed/strength/hardening of weapon or objects to give them a few more uses, but using it drained stamina and tired you out, thus used sparingly. thats just my piece on how it would make it more fair and keep from getting abilities that take away the whole survival aspect.
