"So I can assume you're not afraid of the Night?" the mysterious Duelist asked as the blade on his Duel Disk formed. "Well, you should be. As the challenger, you can take the first turn."
"Light, darkness, good, evil. Truely, if you think about it, it all leads to nothing but a void. But enough of that. I draw." Joshua said, looking at his hand."First off, I'll activate the Spell card Void Vanishment."
All around them, ice began forming and a chill krept into the air. "Now, I discard one card from my hand to add any Void Spell or Trap card to my hand. So I'll discard this to add the Spell Void Expansion to my hand, which I'll now activate."
This time, a ball of darkness appeared between Joshua and the man before expanding and encompassing them both. At first, nothing could be seen until pale, ethereal fire surrounded both duelist as well, lighting the darkness up just enough for both Duelist to see. "I set three card face-down and call it a turn." Joshua said. "So, dark enough for you?"
"Draw," the Duelist said calmly, drawing a card from his deck.
"Alright then. Trap card open. Void Purification." Joshua said, revealing one of his face-downs." With this card, I add the Piaty that's in my graveyard to my hand. Not a problem for you is it?"
"No, not one bit," the Duelist said. "I'll start by playing my Field Spell: Cover of the Night." The Duelist's half of the field was still dark, but his field was then noted to have a dirt path that he was on, and plenty of trees on either side of the path. On top of that, there was a full moon, which barely did anything to light up the field.
"I'll also place three cards face down and end my turn," the Duelist said.
"Draw." Joshua said before looking at his hand the the field. The face-downs were likely to be a problem. He could easily get rid of them but he needed to focus on other things for now. "I activate the Trap card Void Launch. This card allows me to send two Infernoid Monster from my deck to the grave.
"By discarding Saboteur of the Night while I control Cover of the Night, I can negate the activation of a Trap card and destroy it," the Duelist interjected. After he placed the card in the Graveyard slot, a hole opened up underneath the Trap card, and a hand reached up to pull it down. Then the hole closed itself, leaving no trace.
"Hhhmm. If I had to guess, you're a fan of hand traps." He said. "Let's see... I think I'll activate Void Expansion then to summon an Infernoid Token to my side of the field. Got a monster for that or should I fear your face-downs instead?"
"Go right ahead," the Duelist said.
"How kind of you." Joshua said as the flames behind him lept up onto his side of the field, leaving behind a multi-colored canister-like object. Joshua glanced at the face-downs on his opponent's field before deciding what to do. "I use Void Vanishment's effect. By discarding Piaty, I add another Void Launch to my hand."
Joshua's disk ejected the Trap Card which he predeeded to add to his hand. "I then banish Piaty from my grave to Special Summon Infernoid Pirmais in Defense Mode."
On his side of the field, a monster best described as a small mechanical gargoyle with a white-colored canister on it's back appeared on his field.
Infernoid Pirmais - Level 1 ATK: 0 DEF: 0
"Now I use Pirmais' effect to send one of your face-downs to the deck. I target the center one. Also, as an added bonus, you cannot activate it in response."
The Duelist picked up his card, then placed it in his deck, and the auto-shuffling feature activated.
After taking a few seconds to think, Joshua looked at his opponent. "Turn end."
"Draw," the Duelist said, drawing a card. "Hmm... I didn't think it would happen so soon. Perhaps you might still surprise me, though."
"That doesn't sound good for me. Imma guess you drew an ace card." Joshua said
"Oh, no, nothing of the sort. A useful card in this situation, sure, but not an ace card," the Duelist responded. "First, I activate the effect of my Saboteur. If he is in the Graveyard, I can Special Summon him to my field in Attack Position."
"I think not. I activate Pirmais' other effect. By sacrificing my Infernoid Token, I can banish one card from your grave. So I'll banish your Saboteur before you get the chance to summon it." Joshua said as Pirmais let out a mechnical scream before pouncing on the token and devouring it.
"Counter Trap: The Nightwatch," the Duelist said, raising a face-down card. "If you activate a Spell, Trap, or Monster effect while Cover of the Night is face up on the field, I can negate it and destroy it."
"Ah shit. Think I'm seeing a theme though." Joshua said
"I'd be surprised if you didn't," the Duelist responded. "Now then, come on out, Saboteur of the Night." A demon appeared, wearing dark clothing and smiling evilly.
Saboteur of the Night - Level 4, ATK 800, B
"In addition, since a monster was Special Summoned, I can Special Summon Stowaway of the Night from my hand in Attack Position," the Duelist continued, a smaller demon jumping off the back of Saboteur.
Stowaway of the Night - Level 4, ATK 1000, A
"Finally, I Normal Summon Hunter of the Night in Attack Position," the Duelist said, a figure covered in leather clothing and wielding a bow appearing on the field.
Hunter of the Night - Level 4, ATK 1800, A
"Using my Level 4 'A' Hunter of the Night and my Level 4 'B' Saboteur of the Night, I construct the Phase Shift Network!" the Duelist declared, the two monsters flying into the purple galaxy that had appeared abovehead. "None shall see you. None shall hear you. Except when it is too late. All will be your prey. Awaken, Alucard, Master of the Night!" The Duelist chanted, yet nothing seemed to appear.
"Damn vampires, it would seem. If that's why you wear a hood by chance?" Joshua said. Despite his words, he sounded far from amused.
"I also activate a Trap card: Nightmare Archfiends," the Duelist said. "By Tributing my Stowaway, I can Special Summon three Nightmare Archfiend tokens to your side of the field in Attack Position."
"Oh dear god, not this shit again." Joshua muttered, being reminded of his game against Megumi.
After the three flaming demons appeared, the Duelist said, "In Phase A, Alucard can attack all monsters my opponent controls once each. In addition, their ATK and DEF become zero and their effects are negated. With that done, it is time to feast!" Upon those words, a colony of bats suddenly appeared from the trees, swarming all around Joshua's monsters.
Joshua - 4000 LP --> 1000 LP
"And now the Archfiends go off. Fucking great." Joshua muttered.
Joshua - 1000 LP --> 0 LP
"Damnit... damnit, damnit, damnit." Joshua muttered, the ethereal flames around him growing despite the dueling having official ended.
As the field lit up again, the Duelist went over to Joshua. "Before you go, allow me to tell you who to look out for."
"You don't have to. A deal is sadly a deal." Joshua said.
"I insist. Plus, I never said I couldn't tell you anything if you lost," the Duelist said, smiling for the first time.
"Cause apparently your psychic can predict the bloody future. Tell me, was I always going to lose that badly?" Joshua said
"Pretty much," the Duelist said. "If you hadn't picked my useless center face-down, I wouldn't have won. It's pretty much standard to always place something useless in the center."
"Geez, thanks." Joshua said sarcasticly.
"I'm getting ahead of myself here," the Duelist said. "Back to the topic on hand, watch out for Yuna Tashima. She is dangerous."
"So, should I tell the others who will no doubt not believe me since I aint their friend?" Joshua asked. "Cause I wasn't the only one to see this shit early. I'm just the only one that can see past a false tournament."
"Tell the others or not, it's up to you," the Duelist said. "Perhaps you could succeed where I failed. Nevertheless, I wish you good luck." With that, he began to walk away into the elevator.
"You know I'm not going to leave this alone. I've seen trouble before and I refuse to stand-by and do nothing. I will duel you as many times as it takes to get what I need to know to act accordingly." Joshua said, looking at his deck. "So even though I said I would leave, I think I'll stay here. But, I will not ask questions until I have been given permission to."
"That, unfortunately, no longer falls under my jurisdiction, but Mr. Baubles' instead, and he's not exactly in the best mood right now, if today was anything to go by," the Duelist said.
"Well, guess I'm gonna have a tussle with the security around here then." Joshua muttered to himself.
With a sigh, the Duelist stopped and turned back to face Joshua. "Now, now, let us be civil. You made an agreement as a Duelist. What reason would you have to break such an agreement?" the Duelist asked.
"A clear conscious." Joshua said, the flames around him dying down. "I know the tournament is likely just a front for something bigger. And if there's someway I can help people avoid getting hurt, I would prefer that, but as it stands, apparently, I'm not strong enough. Same damn scenario as always."
"Believe me, I know the feeling," the Duelist said. "The feeling of being powerless. Even now, I'm still not sure if what I'm doing now will help. Know this, though: you are not powerless. You have potential to be something great. And admittedly, you are right about the tournament merely being a front for something bigger. I'm using it to lure out Yuna from the other participants, as well as my comrades, who I am also searching for. Then, once the finalists appear, I come in and put an end to the threat, or at least, I'll try."
Joshua listened, anger boiling up in him as he listened to this man talk. "That makes no sense. All this trouble for one girl. If it's the girl that I saw using those Azure Flame monsters, I fail to see what the issue is. She's an ordinary girl, unless the deck she's using somehow isn't. To me, it sounds like you're the ones looking to cause trouble right now," He said, keeping himself from shouting at the man, though just barely.
"I will admit, there hasn't been any unexplained cases of comas or whatnot, but you haven't seen her do that to her best friend... and many others, like I have," the Duelist said. "Just when my comrades and I were about to catch her, she... did something. I'm not sure what, but before I knew it, I was here. In a world I didn't belong. It's another reason why I'm searching for her. I just want to go back home. Back to my own world. And I'm sure my comrades out there do too, wherever they are."
"Your home must be a lovely place then." Joshua said before one of the cards in his deck began glowing. It floated up into the air before the monster on the picture came out of the card and landed on Joshua's left shoulder. "The hell you been Pirmais? Thought you were never gonna show up."
"What in..." the Duelist murmured as he watched Joshua and his... thing. "Is that... the monster you Summoned earlier?"
"Huh? You can actually see him? And here people thought I was insane." Joshua said as the mechnical demon let out a screech. "This is my partner, Infernoid Pirmais. Like most people where I'm from, I have a Duel Spirit. And this little fellow took me away from my home, but hey, least he took me to a peaceful place. No frickin Duel Wars here."
"Duel... Wars?" The Duelist asked, confused.
"Ah yes. I should probably mention that, like you, I ain't exactly native to this dimension. I come from one where there's constant fighting between certain factions. Examples include the Gem-Knights, Gustos, Allies of Justice, Worms, Fables, Naturia, Ritual Beast, Tellarknights, Shaddolls. Really the list goes on. I was a member of the Infernoid faction until... well, let's just say I ran away."
"I see," the Duelist said hesitantly. "Well, I must say, your story is rather excellent, and in any other situation, I'd love to chat about it. However, we should return to the matter at hand. As per our agreement, you will leave. Without complaint. If you wish, though, I will see what I can do to persuade Mr. Baubles about sending you some aid. After he's calmed down, of course."
Joshua thought it over and nodded. "Alright. There is only one duelist I'm concerned about in the tournament right now. She's young, can't be older then ten. If she gets wrapped up in all of this, she'll need a stronger deck. I can't think of a better person to ask for the cards I think will fit more then the man who owns this company." Joshua said
"And the deck archetype?" the Duelist asked.
"I only know those from my dimension and those I've seen here. Yang Zings would be a good fit I think. She might be a rising star and the Yang Zings are also known as the Cosmic Dragons. Plus she's a Synchro user, so I think it might be a perfect fit." Joshua said.
"I see," the Duelist said. "I'll ask him about it. In return, you leave and don't come back." The Duelist then raised his hand for a handshake to seal the deal.
"Deal, but you'll need a name and a picture, sadly I only have a bit of the former. So I need to see her picture so you can find her." Joshua said, shaking the man's hand.
"Unfortunately, I am forbidden from leaving this building, as per an earlier agreement with Mr. Baubles. However, she can easily come here. I'll see to it that she gets what was agreed upon," the Duelist explained.
"I'll bring her here if I come across her again. Shouldn't be too hard right? Pirmais, you willing to help?" Joshua said. The duel spirit screeched in response before vanishing from sight.
"Very good," the Duelist said, pushing the button to call the elevator, which opened almost immediately. "After you," the Duelist said, holding the door open.
"Sure... hey, I didnt catch your name. You have one?" Joshua said
"I don't really like giving out my name," the Duelist said. "However, you can simply call me Sam. Nothing special about the name or anything. I just like it."
"Less awesome then I thought,, but I can't complain." Joshua said as he got in the elevator and leaned against the opposite wall, facing 'Sam'. "Take care. I'll be in touch."
The trip down to the lobby was a short one, and upon its destination, Sam nodded as Joshua got out. The doors closed again, hiding Sam from view as the elevator rose up.
"Time to begin hunting. Ready Primais?" Joshua said before exiting the building, his duel spirit flying off once he was outside.
Not quite. When it loses its overlays, it's still in the game. The overshift happens when you try to detach something that isn't there.
Edit: Well, more specifically, when you try to activate an effect without the overlays. A phase shift monster can have its effect as long as it has overlays, but the moment those are used up the effect is negated and they retain the attack and defense of the last phase. Once you can activate one of their effects, gain the appropriate phase, and at the end of the turn you did that it is banished.
This explplanation here helped me make sense of Phase Shift monsters, though the part where effects are negated after the overlays are gone makes me think: if you are meant to detach the second willingly, then what is the point of doing so if the effects just get negated? The whole Overshifting part didn't make sense after that, so I opt to ignore the effect negation and merely stick with Phase Shift monsters just getting banished at the end phase. Does that sound good to you guys?
@Scarifar After losing both OLs they go into overshift, a state when one of their effects repeats. After that Overshift turn finishes, they are banished.
I think that right there was what lost me. What I said in my summary of their characteristics, though, explains it a bit better. Imo, at least.
So, I may not have (ever) understood exactly how Phase Shift Monsters works, so I will lay out a few things myself.
-Phase Shift Summoning requires an "A" monster and a "B" monster, and the two are used as overlays to Summon a Phase Shift Fusion monster whose level is the total of the two monsters used for the Phase Shift Summoning. -Phase Shift monsters have a Phase A effect and a Phase B effect, as well as (usually) different ATK and DEF values for both phases. -Phase Shift monsters can detach the card with the opposite phase any time they want during the Main Phase (except the turn they're Summoned). Ex. Phase Shift monster is Phase A, so it detaches the "B" to move to Phase B, and vice versa. -Should a Phase Shift monster lose both overlays, they are banished during the End Phase. -They can be resummoned from the banished pile at any time, assuming you have the overlays necessary to Summon them.
I think that's pretty much how they worked before, but I think this explains things rather well. Right?
Joshua walked through town, towards the Industrial Illusion branch that helped out around this area. Something about this tournament was off. Though he didn't know what, something in his gut told him it was, especially given the inccident in the warehouse before Phase Shift came out. How could a summoning method exist before it was released? Well, testing, of course, but the cards wouldn't be able to be taken out of Industrial Illusions. Then leaks and other things the company might want to avoid would occur.
Sighing, he looked at the building in front of him, trying to figure out how best to approach this problem. Thinking about it, maybe asking a few questions would be the best place to start really. Walking into the building and looking around the lobby, he spotted a receptionist and approached her.
"Excuse me ma'am, who is in charge of this building?" he asked.
The receptionist was absentmindedly typing on a keyboard, inputting various pieces of information into certain areas, when a man came over to ask something. "Well, sir, the President of this branch of Industrial Illusions is Mr. Baubles," she replied. "May I ask who you are, sir?"
"No one special, but I do have a question for the president: Why was Phase Shift summoning announced after it's release and not on the day of it?" Joshua said, deciding on a direct approach. Stir up the nest enough and some bees were bound to come.
The receptionist was confused at the point. This conversation was taking a rather odd direction, and she was not trained to deal with it. "I'm afraid I have no idea what you are talking about, sir," the receptionist said. "However, I can pass along your message to the President the next time he becomes available." At this point, though, the electronic lock on the front door engaged, unknown to both Joshua and the receptionist. The elevator numbers above the elevator door also showed the elevator going down.
"You do that. I'm sure he'll find me if he needs or wants to." Joshua said, going to leave. He tried to open the door, only to find it locked. Chuckling to himself, he turned around and looked at the elevator coming down. "Now, did I catch the queen bee or a mere worker bee I wonder."
A dinging noise sounded as the elevator reached the lobby floor, and the elevator door opened, revealing a man with a rather well-made suit. "Sir, I think you have an appointment with me, do you not?" the man asked. The receptionist looked up, surprised to see all this going on. "M-Mr. Baubles! What are you-" the receptionist tried to say before being interrupted. "Now, now, Ms. Liu, this man is a very important person, and I'd hate to see him leave so soon, and before even coming to greet me," Mr. Baubles said. The receptionist hesitated for a second, then said, "Y-yes, Mr. Baubles."
Mr. Baubles then gestured to Joshua and asked, "Now then, why don't you come to my office? We have some important things to discuss." He had been holding the elevator doors open the entire time, waiting for Joshua to come through.
"Queen bee it is," Joshua said, moving forward and into the elevator. He would wait until the President got in and the doors were closed before speaking again. "So... Mr. Baubles, seriously? How much random stuff do you collect to get that name?"
Going back into the elevator, Mr. Baubles pushed the button for his floor and waited for the elevator to take them to his office. As classical elevator music played, Mr. Baubles extended a hand for a handshake and introduced himself, "Let's get the formalities out of the way. I'm sure you know already, but my name is Mr. Baubles. Don't make fun of the name or I will make you regret it." All of which was said with a smile.on his face.
"Too late, already did." Joshua pointed out before thinking things over. "Name's Joshua, but beyond that, I'll only say if things turn out for better or for worse. Now, formalities are out of the way, correct? Then I suppose we can get to business before or after we're out of this elevator. Which would you prefer, as you are the one in charge here."
"Let's get into my office first before we get to business," Mr. Baubles said, his smile now slightly strained.
"If you stress out too badly, you'll likely ruin your face." Joshua said, noticing the force behind the smile.
"Believe me, you don't want to make an enemy out of me," Mr. Baubles said, his tone of voice making it clear he wouldn't stand for any more. "Now then, I believe we're here," Mr. Baubles said as the elevator dinged and the doors opened, revealing his office. In many places there was a tv screen, most of which were off, of course. On his desk were a few electronic gadgets, most of which were phones and tablets. "Now then, business," Mr. Baubles said as he walked over to his desk. "What problems are you having regarding my lovely Phase Shift Summoning method?"
"I don't. I just question why you're lying about when it came out. I seem to remember see two duelist using them a few days ago while dueling. Maybe you will know the cards. One deck was demons based off the Seven Sins. The other deck was Azure Flames. I assume your company made these cards?" Joshua said, relaxing in a chair on the opposite side of Mr. Baubles' desk.
"Those were the first prototypes for Phase Shift Summoning," Mr. Baubles said, thinking quickly. "They were supposed to be used for testing purposes and nothing more. Would you be so kind as to explain how you heard about them? I was sure they were supposed to be airtight secrets, and I'll reprimand whoever was foolish enough to leak them out to the public."
"Well, judging by the looks of things, it looked like a kidnapping scenario. I suppose you were shooting a movie as well?" Joshua asked, crossing his arms.
"A kidnapping?" Mr. Baubles said, his feelings of confusion and surprise genuine this time. "This is the first time I've heard of it. To think, our prototypes being used for such purposes..." Mr. Baubles was silent for a moment, then continued, "Were any names mentioned? Maybe an appearance? Something to help pinpoint whoever it was that caused this stain on Industrial Illusions."
"What makes you think I'll tell you?" Joshua asked.
"Seeing as we're on the subject, why wouldn't you tell me?" Mr. Baubles asked back.
"Same reason you won't tell me the whole story. Niether of us trust one another," Joshua said.
"To be fair, you're not exactly someone of great importance, now are you?" Mr. Baubles said. "I can't just explain all these company secrets to a complete stranger. Heck, I may have already said too much about the prototypes already."
"And if I said I think that those weren't prototypes, I assume your response would be that I'm wrong?" Joshua said.
"Of course," Mr. Baubles. "Where would you even get that ridiculous idea?"
"How about I ask you something in response: How long has Phase Shift been under development then? Surely that fact won't hurt t tell since it's officially out now." Joshua said, resting his chin on a hand.
"A couple years," Mr. Baubles said, waving his hand dismissively. "The idea just came to me, and I thought, why not make this idea a reality? And then, here we are."
"Then I'm sure you remember the first monster you came up with. It's name, effects, type, attribute, and stats. Care to fill me in?" Joshua asked.
Mr. Baubles' eyes shifted up and to the left, then returned to Joshua and he said, "Well, th-the first monster was... Well, I-I wasn't d-directly involved with that. I was too busy dealing with... o-other matters. You know, financial ones."
"Oh, but it was your idea right? To ensure your vision came across just fine, you had to be involved. Or, if what you said was the case, they would've brought the first cards to you to make sure they matched your vision." Joshua said. "So, care to try again?"
Mr. Baubles looked away again, realizing he was caught. He began to sweat nervously, frantically thinking about how to save his reputation, and more importantly, his career. Before he could come up with something, though, a voice behind Joshua said, "Allow me to explain." Behind Joshua was a figure wearing a simple brown robe, with a hood that prevented people from seeing much of his face. "Please forgive Mr. Baubles. I asked to keep this matter secret, but it seems you have began to know a little too much."
"No, I'm just not an idiot like the others. Not to mention I've seen my share of trouble." Joshua said, standing up and turning to face the new figure while also making sure he could keep an eye on Mr. Baubles. This new stranger gave off a bad vibe and he didn't like it. "So, Cult Man, care to explain what's going on here? Or do I have to do something to earn that information?"
Ignoring the jab at his outfit, the man merely shifted his gaze and asked, "You are a Duelist, are you not? For someone like you, there is only one way to convince you that what I say is true." The man then flung his left arm out, revealing the equipped Duel Disk. "With a Duel. Simple terms. Win, and I tell you everything. Lose, and you leave without complaint."
Joshua smiled. "Sounds good enough to me." He said, raising his duel disk. He reached for his Gem-Knight deck when his disk's silver outlines emited pale, bluish flames. He looked at it for a bit before smiling. "Guess their hungry. Alright, the Knights have played enough. Time for some real fun."
He reached for his Infernoid deck and put it in, the deck becoming surrounded in pale flames as well.
Mr. Baubles, who had his head down in worry throughout this entire exchange, then raised his head and interjected, "Not in here! We have facilities for such things!" Walking past Joshua, he grabbed the robed man's shoulder and led him to the elevator, speaking to him in a hushed tone, "You better convince him to leave without spilling our secrets, or else my aid to you is cut off." Opening the elevator, he held the door open and turned back to Joshua, saying, "Get in here. Get this Duel out of the way, then get out of my sight."
"You seem certain that I'll lose this." Joshua said, walking into the elevator and waiting for them to arrive at their arena.
The trip was silent, perhaps uncomfortably so, but it was a short trip. With a ding, the doors opened, revealing a room with plenty of machinery, and in the center was a large Dueling ring.
Once they arrived, Joshua exited the elevator and walked to the otherside before turning around and facing his opponent, his duel disk activating, summoning a disk made of the same flames coming from the device.
