How about... It doesn't make them phase out completely? Meaning they'll be 50% solid, but it has the better application of being able to jump from shadow to shadow, sort of like from Aragami. You can be struck by most anything with 50% effectiveness and have high mobility in that form, although a clean hit will throw you out of it.

What if sources of light affected it's effectiveness?

For example in a dark room, it's 100% effective, but anywhere out in broad daylight or even under moon or heavy starlight is enough to interfere (max 40% full moon, max 20% starlight on new moon), for example. With it virtually impossible under high noon directly below the sun or source of light.

This way he'll be able to use it, but he can't avoid everything completely without moving in normal circumstances.

If it needs more weaknesses, probably limit what he can do while phasing and choose between recovery time (delay after exiting the form) or startup time (delay before entering form).

@pkken I took a look at Curses, and according to the description, yes. It's the yin to regular magic's yang. Magic is stemmed from will and emotions, but Curse harnesses the dark wills and emotions instead.

After being reminded that Curse exists, maybe I'll do something with it... Later of course.

We'll keep it simple. Ranks are ranks as part of the system. However A and S entail advanced prowess, for A ranks it doesn't necessarily mean that's one of their strong points, but S ranks are required to have that incredible prowess and more. B ranks are your average experienced mage, and below that are either newbies or just simply weaker mages. Below B take more menial jobs that have little bearing on their ability to fight.

There's a lot regarding S ranks in FT wiki. There are a lot of S ranks too, a surprising amount.

Obviously not everyone they encounter is an official mage so there are loads more "S rank level" mages too. Natsu jumps to S and beyond when friendship kicks in at the end of every arc too with something like Lightning Fire Dragon.

So his memories of the time are wiped? Shame. Could've been interesting. I don't think Vega would go out of his way to dig up such a past either.

Also even if that was the case with A ranks, Vega likes standing atop others, so he'll probably get into that IC too...

@Spanner I'm feeling a bit of overlap. I'll let you figure out where.

Although regarding the former Dark Mage status, Vega garnering the title of Reaper during his rampage in just wanting to perfect his magic put him in that category as well until he joined Golem Hand. Could be a thing for your character to note. Also while you're the top contender for S rank among all the A ranks, it's very arguable you stand at the top of them all. Vega's about ready to join S rank, if only he was more cooperative.

Considering all the characters, that's very likely. Vega would be going off on missions on his own anyways. If he works with anyone it's pure coincidence and that their jobs crossed together at some point.
