They say it's about the journey, not the destination. This is true of many things. Pizza delivery is not one of them.

TFW you know what you want to happen but the words aren't cooperating. Why is plot suddenly so much harder to write?

Glad to see I'm not the only follower of Lord Cato, god of wisdom, on this most auspicious Superb Owl Sunday.

Bio

I am an adult, though I don't usually act like it. I'm a voracious reader, and not overly picky about books. I am artistic in a variety of areas, including music, drawing, writing, and sculpting. I have a minor obsession with dragons, and love the color violet. Fantasy is my preferred genre, be it past, future, urban...as long as it has a fantasy flavor to it. I also like scifi, mystery, and some horror. I am crazy, and I like tormenting my characters. But I don't bite...much. ^.~

Ah! like the old toy, I get it. ^.^;; By the way, I've watched like...six eps of Tokyo Ghoul thus far. I'm enjoying it a lot, thank you.

The doctor’s jaw tightened, and his eyes narrowed, but his voice only held a hint of steel, still mild for the most part. “Not a simple shifter, no. But most certainly a man who gets himself into far too much trouble, has little regard for his own safety, and lacks the sense to let his body recover properly.” Max did not back down. “Magical healing may be swift, but it is not nearly as complete as the body’s own ability. That is why, while I do employ magic in my practice, I also know better than to rely on it more than necessary. It is hardly a panacea.” He moved closer, to examine the new scar. “For example, if you had allowed a trained physician to do his job, there would be minimal scarring.” The man sighed and shook his head, stepping back again. “What’s done is done. I won’t be able to help you beyond instructing you to avoid strenuous physical activities for a while.”

A nod to Malie, and the woman added a few more notes to her paper and left the room. The doctor said nothing, just looking at Cain for a long moment. “I’ve heard a number of things about you over the past few days. Some interesting, some concerning. But none of that matters here, aside from you being apparently unused to our ways, so I shall explain. If the King, may he rest in peace, were to be under my care, and if he were to try to start going about his usual business before he was sufficiently recovered, I would stop him, just as surely as I would stop you. You are to take it easy, and allow your body to finish healing. Doctor’s orders -- and I will have you report back...” His eyes flicked to the wound again, and he did a quick mental calculation. “Five days. If you do not come, I will find you.”

With business out of the way, Maxwell’s manner shifted. The strict physician relaxed, shoving his hands in his pockets and taking on a far more easygoing attitude. “She has indeed been very worried about you -- Amune, that is. I lost count of how many times she’s dropped by to see if you were awake yet. I don’t know where she is right now, but if you wait a while she’s sure to turn up as soon as she can find an excuse.” He paused, a hint of a frown shadowing his face. “Your bedside manner needs work, though. Telling her you were dying may have been the truth, but you had her so upset she got in my way when I was trying to save you. She didn’t mean to, of course, but I ended up needing Malie to grab her and carry her out of the room.”

Semper...gumby? O.o And yeah, I am a bit more careful with folk I've not gotten to know, but I think we've been playing long enough that I have a decent feel for you, and I'm comfortable doing little things. And if you really don't like something, I would change it. ^.^ The broom closet was an interesting idea, and now my explanation is that they put him there so he could have more privacy than just one of the beds in the ward. High ranking visitor and all.

Max: ...Really? Really, Malie? *facepalm* Whatever, just leave him. I don't want to move him more than necessary.
Malie: What, it's not like I left the cleaning supplies in there!
@LadyRunic I thought you didn't actually have to say the name in order to use it? "I command you by your name, do such-and-such." Still, that makes sense.

@Zahrale if it's possible to extract a name with duress, and it can be learned from records, riddles, and sources other than the owner, there's really not much difference from the example you used for dragons. If someone learns your name, they will be able to command you, and your only freedom in the future is that which they allow you.

By conflicting, I mean one person says "go" and the other says "stay". What happens to the fey who is controlled by both?

When he said that he was close to dying, Amuné’s expression turned distraught. “No! You won’t -- you won’t, Dr. Max will help you and everything will be fine. Okay? Okay?!” She grabbed his hand when Cain reached to touch her cheek, her own fingers shaking. The doctor arrived just in time to keep him from hitting the floor as he passed out.

~~~
Outside the hastily converted broom closet was the same hallway he’d been taken to a few days before, this time from a different angle. Voices spoke softly in a nearby room, a murmur just loud enough to hear but not clear enough to understand. Then the sound stopped, and a door opened to reveal a dark-haired woman in a simple dress. She saw Cain standing in the hallway and a bright smile lit up her face. “Darling, he’s up,” she said to whoever was in the room she’d just left. “Huh? No, I mean up-up. Mhm, I figured. I’ll tell him.” With a soft laugh, she approached the former assassin. “Doctor Thomas will be out in just a moment, but we need you not to move around too much. An exam room will do for now.” Light green eyes danced with amusement. “He said if you don’t sit back down right this minute he’ll have me sit on you to make you stay put.” She placed a hand lightly on Cain’s shoulder and guided him to one of several small rooms, the kind every clinic had. “Just go ahead and sit on the table. I’m Malie, by the way. I help the doctor with...well, with whatever he needs, really.” Another wide smile. “And I’m glad to see you conscious -- you really did mess yourself up quite badly, you know. I won’t be the only one, either.” For a brief moment, Malie’s expression turned crafty, but her words were sincere. “At any rate, it’s about time to change your dressing too, so Max is likely going to want to take care of that as well while you’re in here. Tell me, how are you feeling? On a scale of one to ten, what would you rate the pain in your chest?”
The doctor’s assistant went through a set of fairly standard questions, jotting notes on a sheet pinned to a board, and after a few minutes, the doctor joined them. “That was excellent thinking, that metal tube, though very roughly done,” he said without preamble. “But you were still very lucky. Much longer and I wouldn’t have been able to do anything for you. You’ve been out for just over three days, and you’re healing well -- faster than I would expect from the average shifter, but I have no medical history for you, so I couldn’t say if that’s normal in your case. However you are still injured, and it is my professional opinion that you should /not/ be up and about. Honestly, I would think someone in your state would have had the sense to stay in bed when he woke up.” Maxwell fixed his patient with a very pointed stare. Unruly children who hated being cooped up withered under it, but the man before him was hardly a child.
@TheMinorFall Just gonna assume he lets Malie lead him. If not, I can change it. ^.^ Amune will show up in a few posts, but I wanna let Max have a chance to talk to Cain first. ^.^
@Zahrale I don't think if you're forced to give your name under duress that it counts as willingly, but I'll totally accept that it works as giving your name. =P
So what happens with conflicting orders and/or promises?
@Ojo chan 42 D'aww, you're hardly terrible, and I'm not that good. ^.^; I'm glad I didn't annoy you too much before, at least. I worry about doing it but that doesn't seem to help me avoid it much. Besides, everyone improves over time, and then you'll look back and cringe at your old stuff. Trust me, I do it all the time. =P Anyhow, your research is solid for sure -- and usually when it comes to a fantasy setting, I just go with loose ideas, instead of specifics, at least for historical stuff. Sometimes I'll get into what happened when in specific years (Fallen London made me do this, and I decided to do it for Sini's disastrous trip to the Mortal Realm. With Templar, I saw he was doing that already so I just jumped in!), but usually? I don't care if you have cars a few decades early, or if maybe you get some real facts wrong. What I tend to focus on is how things fit together in the new world we use to write in. Does it make sense for it to happen, and do future events get shaped accordingly. Like...I'm not picking, promise, but I'm going to use some examples from your stuff. You have Laira, growing up without a mother. If she's used to being around people that treat her alright even though she doesn't know them well (for example, if she's bounced around between decent foster homes, as an orphan might be -- this does assume decent ones, but *shrug*) then she'd be more trusting, and you have an excellent reason why she would think very little of giving Clyde her full name, even though she doesn't know him. Stuff like that, intentional or otherwise, makes me happy. <3
I should note that unless I /really/ don't like someone (and honestly, I don't find many people like that) I tend to fuss more about things I'm interested in, that give me ideas and that I like. Kinda counter-productive, yeah? ^.^;;
@LAdyRunic@Zahrale Well this just made things messy. <.<;;
Also a sudden and somewhat random question. What happens if Falk orders one of his fey to do something they are unable to do. Like...Iunno, somethign that is literally physically impossible and there's no actual way to even attempt it? Do they explode or something like a computer that doesn't know how to break logic loops?
@Ojo chan 42 Well, I was expressing interest in something you already had worked out, even if it is not real in the sense of existing in the life we life. Just because something is fiction doesn't mean it can't have details, or truth. Also I wouldn't call it plot, since that's Runic's department for the most part, and how the herd works doesn't seem particularly spoilery. I get that you didn't mean it the way I heard, but it felt like I was trying to engage you in with something you liked (if you don't like him, why would you play Clyde, after all) and you responded with outright rejection. I guess it's because I got people all worked up before, eh? ^.^;; I'm sorry too, I was just interested and wanted to make sure I understood right, and maybe learn more. I love talking with people about their characters and planning and stuff. <.< Like...well, that other kelpie guy, Laira's father, he's from a different herd, right? Got any plans of bringing them into the picture? Maybe as a rival to Clyde's herd? Or maybe the father ended up getting himself killed because he was upset about having to allow Clyde's claim because of his dead sister, but now the herd blames Clyde for the loss of one of their own? Perhaps he was the son of their lead mare? ...And I'm getting excited and just spouting things and I should probably stop now. x.x
@Ojo chan 42 Got it, strength first, then hereditary. I guess they figure the old leader would pass on strength and/or wisdom to their male child, more than another, potentially stronger male would have.
I honestly have no idea how to reply to your second statement without sounding like a jerk, but that stung. =/
