could I be a stow away that has the skills to fill the role as master gunner?

I do not think so, since there would be an NPC master gunner in place, and something bad would have to happen to the master gunner NPC for your character to take control. But you can still take the role and be retroactively there from the start. Or do you have other ideas for a master gunner character?

"Tell us of the Morgador," Hagen requested, with a cheerful smile, "I have spent plenty of time in the frozen lands of the North but have never ventured into that place. I had been planning an expedition to the uncharted lands South of here, but then the young lady approached me and suggested I join her for a time," he nodded towards Aderynel.

"But anyway, on with your tale! I hear there are ruins in the Morgador, the scale of which is beyond imagining!" he declared.

"Well, it is kinda a long story, but it did deal with a ruin." Markiel started with a smile on his face. "But the tale is that I was hired to help guard a scholar who thought he could open a long-lost ruined Sidfirian tower that had some kind of valuable object inside." This was when Markiel's face turned somewhat confused. "Now I do not know why the scholar thought this or how he was going to open the tower. He was rather secretive about it, but was paying a good fee for the protection, so I did not mind. So after travelling days into Morgador and finding the tower."

Now Markiel's face and tone were more serious. "That is when things took a turn, and the tower door had some kind of magical ward on it, the scholar thought he could deactivate the thing... Only he could not, and instead of opening the tower door by using what looked like an old wooden wand. Whatever he tried to do to get past the ward, the ward seemly activated and sent a burst of magic out back at the scholar and reduced him to ash. We did not stick around after that, and one of the guards tried to pick up the ward that was still intact, but it burned his hands when he tried to take it. I never seen or heard of wood being that hot and still being wood. So he left it there, and if there is a way to get into that tower. I would be hesitant to try."

Markiel's tone shifted to a more relaxed one, "that was my experience in Morgador, and I just wonder what was going on in that scholar's head and where he got that wand, but I have not ventured back into Morgador since."

Markiel shook his head in remembrance of the tale. "I just hope that our venture into these ruins is not so... traumatic." He really hopes that and things do not take a turn like that one.

"So, but what about you?" Markiel curiously asked, you have a tale you wish to say, or should we talk of something else?"

Both Leo and Sofia watched Veronica finish the course and watched the rest of the campers run the course. Some did well while others did not do so well. It was a mixed bag and mixed responses from the pair. Leo did note how Duke did not show up or was not even called up. Did something happen to him, or did River forget him somehow? Leo did not see Duke in the arena, and maybe he slept in or something? It was weird if the person he spoke to yesterday suddenly disappeared. But maybe Duke will show up later, Leo thought to himself.

Sofia watched eagerly but stayed silent as the campers did the course. She did feel bad for some of the campers who did not do well, and it showed on her face.

When Veronica came back after her ordeal, Leo and Sofia sat there waiting for her, with Sofia speaking first. "It is a rough course, but you made it!" Sofia trying to sound reassuring to her friend after her performance. Sofia had to admit that it was not an easy course, but both she and Veronica made it. Even if Veronica was more worn out than she was.

Leo was about to say something when Heath and Iliana approached them. "Hello Iliana and hello Heath." Leo said in a friendly manner. "I am Leo." Adoptive brother? Leo thought, there is a story there, but by the way Iliana spoke of her father. It meant to him that she probably did not wish to talk about it. Which, considering his own reluctance to speak about the details of his own father. Leo can understand, and there is a time and place for everything, and now is not that time.

"Hello Iliana, and nice to see you again, Heath." Which Sofia's face lit up with a smile when shortbread cookies were brought up. "Those would hit the spot right about now after training, and I am glad you remembered." Nothing like cookies after a workout like this one, and home-baked ones as well. "Yeah, you guys can sit with us." Then Sofia remembered that Leo was there and went to ask him. "You are okay with this, right?"

"Yeah, I am fine with that, Sofia," saying matter-of-factly.

"Good," Sofia smiled, and the two of them would wait to see what River had to say. Which did not take long.

After listening to what River had to say about the camper's times. Both of them had their thoughts about it. With Leo, hearing that his sibling Trinity beat the course the fastest. It made him all the more wanting to meet his sibling. Since it was something that she got first, while he was tied for second. Hopefully, the daughter of Ares will be nice enough to talk to him. She was in the last group, and there was only one woman in that group, so he finally had a name to a face. Now, to find the right time to approach and talk to her. Unless he just says screw it and talks to her now.

Sofia, on the other hand, while she was glad she did not have to go again. The fact that Veronica had to go again dampened her mood. "It looks like you have to go again, Veronica... " The sorriness in her voice was there. At least she can take her time this time, but as Sofia thought about whether she would wait here for Veronica to finish her second run. Sofia did not know if Veronica would like that, after thinking about it. Sofia will feel better if she stays with Veronica for now. Unless Veronica had a problem with it.

"Veronica, if it is okay with you, I think I will stay until you are one with your second course." Sofia then turned to Leo, "what about you Leo? Are you going to stay?"

"Hmmm, probably not, and I think I am going to go soon." Leo started collecting his things. But Leo had a curious look on his face. "So how do you all feel about River so far?" Admittedly, Leo is still making up his mind about the guy, but so far. Leo does not see anything bad with River yet.

Either way, Leo would wait for a reply, and Sofia would wait to see what Veronica's response to her staying was.

Mathis took a moment to think before replying to his XO and raised his eyebrow, seeing how Vance himself volunteered to go on the ship. "I agree with your plan, and Leino." He turned his head towards the signal officer. "Inform them that they are going on a trip."

"Roger, Captain," was all she said as she started messaging the crew that Vance had recommended to explore the wreck.

It was a solid plan, in Mathis's mind at least. Of course, sending marines to protect the team was a no-brainer, but Vance volunteering to lead a team was bold of him. Even though Vance was competent with military matters, as his records show. It seems a bit brave of him to go on the first mission of the Pathfinders operation. But then again, with travelling in deep space and exploring the unknown. You have to be at least a bit brave to go on a trek like this. Which Mathis felt a bit impressed by Vance's actions. Hopefully, Vance continues to impress him during this endeavor.

Mathis looked at the hologram of the wreck. Almost studying it and looking back at Vance. "Just one thing," his tone turned into a serious and cautious one. "Be careful when on that ship, we do not know what is on it or what this energy source is. Not to mention what other surprises this system has for us." Mathis took a deep breath and looked at Vance directly in his eyes. "I do not want to lose anyone, and we have just started, so again, be careful and try not to take any unnecessary risks while aboard that ship."

Hopefully, Vance will listen and heed his words. There is no room for reckless actions, and now that they are in the unknown and dealing with a wrecked ship, who knows what lies inside other than this energy source? So Mathis prefers the safe approach while he is captain of the Arcadian, hoping that Vance feels the same way.
