@VoiD Very very pedantic question, but is there a minimum enlistment age?

18 is the typical age, but some troops have been known to enlist as young as 14. Depends on your physique.
@VoiD How was magic discovered? Are there any religious taboos against it?

Magic has always been *around*, and in ancient times possessing magical-affinity was seen as a sign of nobility. I go into more detail on that in the magic system bit.

However, education in the arcane arts as an institution became prominent in around the 2nd & 3rd centuries (A.D.) with the founding of Imperial academies, and the creation of a Magister Maximus role in the Imperial court.

Magic isn't really seen in conjunction with religion besides, in the odd historical case, as a tool to show "divine favor". Using magic as such is universally condemned by both the Orthodox and Catholic churches, as well as most magical institutions the world over.

Hope that answers your question.
@VoiD Bit of a minor question, but would lance-corporals be armed with an officer's sword and pistol and command a firing line, or would they carry a musket like the rest of the infantry and be part of the firing line itself?

A dragoon is typically classified as "mounted infantry" and seen as medium-level cavalry. The Imperial Dragoon's kit is fairly uniform between ranks. They are generally armed with carbines and heavy sabres, with some also carrying pistols -- these pistols are non-standard, so they are bought at the individual soldiers expense.
@BingTheWing I've included a recent set of military campaigns in the "Present" tab of the History lore. Let me know if there's anything else you're unclear on.
@VoiD Wait, I'm a little confused on roles. We are all part of one omadon, with one lieutenant leading us. Could we all be lance corporals, or would the majority of us be troopers? Are we all new recruits?

Also, what holdings does the Byzantine Empire have in the New World?

Sorry for not clarifying this. Yes, the idea is for most of the characters to be *new* recruits, as the RP is initially focusing on one squad of Dragoons. However, the Lieutenant and any Enlisted character higher than Trooper rank can have experience in the previous military campaigns that occurred before the setting of this RP. So basically, Cornets & Troopers are new recruits.

Actually, as I'm looking at this it may be simpler to have the RP party start at platoon (25 men) size, as to simplify the command structure. I'm going to change that right now -- the RP party will be now be platoon size, with one lieutenant commanding, and with some senior NCOs. Meaning you can create a character with experience or a fresh-faced recruit, albeit I'm going to keep there being only one OFFICER with experience (the lieutenant) at the start. Obviously the extra men will simply be NPCs you guys can order around, and it will leave room for people applying in the future.

Again, an oversight on my part. Thanks for asking these questions though, it helps clarify everything for everyone else -- especially on things I hadn't even considered previously.

EDIT: Almost forgot, the Empire does not have any colonies in the New World. Its colonies are mainly on the Horn of Africa, India, and some islands in Indonesia. The Empire has moderately friendly relations with the American Union, however.
@VoiD I think what would be more urgent for character creation at this point would be a history of the specifics of recent military campaigns in the last few decades or so, so that we can integrate past career experiences into our character backgrounds.

Damn, that's a dumb oversight on my part. I'll write that up right now, expect it within an hour or so.
Bro what did u use for the title

www6.flamingtext.com

And a lot of messing around with the various customization features.
Alright, the OOC is up and I am now accepting character applications. I've completed all the lore/information that should be relevant to writing your application, but if I missed anything or if you have questions feel free to ask me! I have NOT completed some of the historical lore, but I will be writing it in conjunction with the IC.

"And, like a purple phoenix, the Empire of the Romans rose from the ashes..."
—Edward Gibbon, excerpt from The Revival of the Roman State

The year is 1814, and the Byzantine Empire flourishes. Recovered from the brink of destruction, the Empire has expanded to become the preeminent colonial power in Europe. It's holdings stretch from the fertile floodplains of the Nile to the lucrative spice islands of the far east, and represent the greatest territorial extent the Empire has ever achieved. Constantinople is counted the richest city in the world, and the Imperial tagmata reach numbers not seen since Trajan ruled.

But all is not well in Byzantium. The British, buoyed by their victory over the Franks in the hundred years war, have established a colonial empire of their own in the New World. Their navy challenges Byzantine supremacy at sea, threatening to break centuries of Roman dominance in the Mediterranean. Meanwhile, the so-called Holy Roman Empire, at the encouragement of the Pope in Paris, seeks to reclaim its Italian territories; most especially the ancient city of Rome. Even more worrying are the rumors of the eastern kingdoms of Hungary and Galicia pledging their aid against Byzantium in this endeavor.

Combined with the ever-present threat of insurrection, the Byzantine Empire faces enemies from within and without. You, a soldier of the Imperial Dragoons, may soon find yourself waging a war for the Empire's very survival.

PREMISE:

The premise of this RP is a sort of "what-if" scenario, where the Byzantine Empire never fell and instead became a colonial power, along with other fun history-bending changes. The RP I have in my head is a low-fantasy world, where magic does exist but in scarce quantity, and its usage is slowly being encroached upon by new advances in science. The lore goes into more detail, but to sum up: alternate-history world in the Napoleonic era, with a little magic.

Gameplay will focus around a single unit of Imperial Dragoons, following their campaigns across Europe against the coalition powers (Britain, the HRE, Hungary, Galicia, etc). There will be skirmishes, ambushes, grand battles, intrigue, and all the sorts of fun you may expect from a war in this era, along with some fantasy elements sprinkled in for good measure. You'll start, along with your fellow RPers, as either an enlisted man or officer, and naturally the party will gradually work itself up to higher ranks and responsibilities as the RP progresses. I will be driving the major events from the behind-the-scenes, though of course I'll be taking into account the party's actions as well as player input.
