Demonic Magic | Conjuration

House Fletcher have, for generations, summoned demons who provide their children with magical capabilities. The ritual is binding, involving a process wherein the current head of the House would inject the demon inside the body of the child – normally around the age of ten or so – in order to allow the flow of magic to enter the child's system. Control over the demon is then practised by the child under direct supervision from armed guards of House Fletcher. Once it has become certain that the child poses no threat, they are once again allowed freedom to utilize their new-found abilities for the betterment of the House.

The process is extremely dangerous and House Fletcher has suffered casualties many times. A child may not survive the initial phases of the possession or fall prey under the demon's wiles, eventually wreaking havoc in the household. The continued existence of the normally unwilling and vengeful demon also poses a threat and members of House Fletcher undergo a constant struggle of control over the demon.

The demons that have possessed Reagan's body gave them the power of conjuration. Conjuration is the magic of casting spells which would summon either a living or non-living thing to the conjurer's aid. The process of casting a conjuration spell depends on the type of item or creature that the conjurer is attempting to summon and the length of time they wish for it to remain with them. Spells that summon non-living items such as weapons or bound armour are easier to summon and maintain than spells that summon living creatures.

The conjurer is limited in a way that the casting process takes time and certain ingredients are required to summon a variety of items. For example, summoning a simple broadsword requires either a piece of an already crafted sword or one of the items utilized in the creation of the weapon. Summoning creatures requires more ingredients, such as a patch of fur to summon a wolf. Control over summoned creature also depends on the conjurer's abilities and concentration, and the amount of ingredients utilized in the summoning spell.

The most powerful conjuration spells require the use of rare ingredients and a magic circle. There have been reports that these spells can take the caster hours to complete and drains the conjurer's magic so much so that not even small conjuration spells can be attempted in the following days.

Summons

Non-Living Summons

Non-living summons do not require the use of a magic circle, but does require an open space for the summoned item to materialize. A piece of item related to the item the conjurer is attempting to summon must be the core of the spell and is the indicator of where the item will materialize. Non-living summons can last longer than summoned creatures, as they require little maintenance once summoned.

Living Summons

Living summons require the use of a magic circle and an understanding of the creature's basic anatomy. The conjurer must then attempt to recreate this anatomy using simple items relating to the creature within the magic circle. For simpler creatures like golems, recreating the anatomy can be as rudimentary as the conjurer wishes, but for stronger creatures like dragons, it must be as detailed as possible. The summoned creature will maintain its intelligence and instincts, but will be guided by the conjurer like a puppet on strings. Maintaining control can range from easy to almost impossible, depending on the type of creature summoned.

Spell Magnitude

Magnitude I

Most non-living summons comprise the array of spells categorized as Magnitude I. These spells are the most easily cast with little to no effort from an experienced conjurer and materialize almost instantly, depending on the mass. The summoned items are not durable enough to last long-term usage.

Magnitude II

Non-living summons using Magnitude II spells are more powerful and more concrete, allowing the conjurer to use them more efficiently, at the cost of a slightly longer casting time and concentration. The most basic of Living Summons can be attempted with Magnitude II spells, although control over the creatures is easily attained although they dematerialize easily.

Magnitude III

Magnitude III spells require more time and are more taxing on the conjurer. Most of these spells can take minutes for the summon to materialize, although the results can be worth it. Non-living summons using Magnitude III spells are more durable, faster, and deadlier than normally crafted weapons. Living summons last longer and Magnitude III spells aid the conjurer in controlling these creatures.

Magnitude IV

The overall strength, durability, and speed of non-living summons are enhanced. Additionally, Magnitude IV spells allow the conjurer to summon a number of weapons at once at a cost. More advanced living summons are also available to the conjurer and control over the creatures is fleeting. Some Magnitude IV spells can also substitute casting time in exchange for more magic from the conjurer, which can drain them as much as Magnitude V spells.

Magnitude V

Only the most powerful of living summons require Magnitude V spells. These spells take an incredibly long time and require all the strength of thee conjurer. Maintaining control over the summoned creatures is also difficult but most conjurers who attempt to use Magnitude V spells use them as a last resort, wherein they allow the summoned creature to wreak havoc without their control.

Summons

Zaebor

Zaebor is the original demon that House Fletcher summoned. She appears to Reagan as a woman with the wings of a dragon and scales coating her skin. Between the two demons possessing Reagan, Zaebor is the more benevolent one as she has come to care for the young human. She is the one who had given Reagan the power of conjuration, but had wanted to allow her the ability to summon only non-living items as she sees summoning living creatures as a horrible act. She is the more powerful of the two demons inside Reagan, but knows that she cannot maintain this strength for long, which is why she is insistent that Reagan grow stronger so that they could stop Keadal themselves.

Keadal

Keadal is Zaebor's sworn rival and the one that altered the original Fletcher spell to allow him entrance into Reagan's body. He appears to her as a four-eyed wolf with silver white fur. His goals are more malevolent as he had not expected for Reagan to achieve control over the two of them. While he has no concern over the matters of mortals, he does wish for Zaebor's destruction and seeks to take control over Reagan in order to achieve that. Unfortunately for him, Zaebor has retained most of her power while he has not and thus he remains unable to break Reagan's control over him. He remains quiet to plot his next actions, but is most often the cause of Reagan's horrible feelings.

S K I L L S:

• Reagan has been trained in archery since childhood and they have grown extremely skillful in the craft.
• Reagan is capable of defending themself in melee combat, especially when using a pair of small daggers.
• Through their travels, Reagan has grown knowledgeable about the different countries and cultures in the world.

E Q U I P M E N T:

• Spell Book: Reagan carries around a large, tome-like book that is normally attached to their hip. It contains the different spells they use in conjuration.
• A pack of broken items and scraps of fur: Reagan keeps the items they use for conjuration in a leather pack they sling over their shoulder.
• House Fletcher bow: Reagan carries an exquisitely crafted bow made of rosewood and light steel that bears their family emblem on the grip.

P E R S O N A L I T Y:

Reagan's personality is heavily affected by that of the demons inside them. They maintain a kind demeanor towards most folks they encounter, offering a kind greeting whenever they can, but will keep almost everything to a casual interaction. They will never willingly extend a hand for help without first assuring that they would receive just recompense and even then, still has the tendency to turn against another should the odds shift. They are incredily selfish in this regard, but Reagan is not a person that would take a life simply because they can. Most of all, Reagan is extremely driven by their goal and has the tendency to be easily swayed by anger.

H I S T O R Y:

House Fletcher has ruled over Keinsfeild, a large piece of land in a country to the west, for generations. They are feared by foreign forces because of their capabilities in magic and are respected by their people due to the responsibility with which they ruled over them. Perhaps the only ones who dare rival Keinsfeild rulers is House Flatfoot of Mellowbrooke, a bigger land north of Keinsfeild. House Flatfoot has been the rivals of House Fletcher for decades, each declaring war on the other in simple shows of power. Despite the Fletchers magic, the Flatfoots maintain an equal standing against them due to their superior numbers and military prowess.

House Flatfoot recently uncovered the horrible secret behind House Fletcher's magic - that they allow demons to possess their body in order to gain power - and threatened to reveal this to Keinsfeild's people should the Fletchers refuse to swear fealty to them. Fearing that their people would revolt and hunt them down, the Fletchers openly declare war against Mellowbrooke, hoping to wipe out the Flatfoots before they can even begin to unleash their plot. It's an act that the head of House Flatfoot foresaw and therefore, he sent one of his children to travel to Rothar with the evidence against the Fletchers to wait in safety until the chaos subsides. After finding out about this, the Fletchers retaliated by sending one of their own to hunt down the Flatfoot.

Given this duty, Reagan began to hunt down the Flatfoot across the world. They wanted for nothing more than to keep her from reachinf Rothar as they knew with certainty that the Flatfoot would be able to disappear in the neutral kingdom. For a year and a half, the war in their country waged on while the two heirs continued their chase. Unfortunatelt for Reagan, after an incident at a country filled with savages, they lost sight of the Flatfoot. They were unwilling to let this stump them and they headed to Rothar, determined to find and hunt down the Flatfoot at all cost.

Race: Planar Gnome (Gnome with very elongated life spans, lasting to even being immortal.)
Appearance: Click Me! He also wears a fluffy red bathrobe and black shutter shades.
Magic: Planar Binding.
- Planar magic is an interesting sort, binding moreso. An item can be enchanted and bound to an interdimensional plane, giving it interesting effects. The limitations are boundless and the possibilities are limitless. One of the best usages of this kind of magic is comedic fighting, where if a caster can somehow convince the enemy to wear a pair of pants, bounded to "The Realm of a Hundred Monks"... yeah that guy becomes sterile.
Techniques: Old Man Johnson has several techniques, but one sticks out in particular.
- Old Man Johnson has mastered the realms and planes of this known universe, and can use them to an advantage in a fight. Even to the point where he can dodge attacks by simply moving to the left 2 feet, however he would need almost half of his attention to dodge it. He nicknamed this technique "Flying Squirrel Jutsu", and has taught this to about 20 other people, including his interplanar dog Sunshine.
Skills: Binding, Enchanting, Fireballs, Unarmed Combat, Levitation, and Healing / Repairing.
Equipment: The Robe of Destiny (need some form of armor). 2 spiked gauntlets (for unarmed combat). Re'svex, the Sentient Sword (a sword that gives good advice and is generally a bro).
Personality: Old Man Johnson is a military strategist, and a schizophrenic elder. He acts serious a lot of the time, but is a very kind person and more often than not will talk your ears off telling stories of the many different planes he visited. He's a bit insane, but honestly with his past it would be expected.
History:
What a tale he has lived. Baront Johnson was born over 1000 years ago, to a poor family that was shamed by everyone in his community. He loathed them all and got into a lot of fights because of this. At the age of 14 he had received mental trauma so severe that he was diagnosed with schizophrenia, which later shaped him into the man he was destined to be. After attending a mage's college a far ways away, he learned of the many planes, and was amazed by it. As he went around the lands, trying to figure out how these things worked, he joined many adventurers on quests, even one time witnessing a lich being born. On one of these quests, a paladin hit him hard with a hammer, and oddly enough, Johnson woke up at a place he called "New Earth", which was basically the same as Earth, but everything was different colored. He started to experiment with New Earth, and he found out it was a plane. For the next 100 years of his life, he explored the many planes of existence, eventually mastering how to travel between them, and make his own. When he came back to the world which he came from, he saw everything was different. 786 years had passed on that realm, and Johnson was reaching his elderly years. They say that traversing the planes had caused Johnson to become immortal, however he has not confirmed this. Johnson, however, does confirm he realized who he really was about 67.5 years into exploring, and thats when the Robe of Destiny, and his sword Re'svex, were granted to him. He thereby called himself Old Man Johnson the Planeswalker, and has dedicated himself to the exploration of these realms for the rest of his days.
Other: Old Man Johnson is not a bulky person, and in terms of physical defense is very weak. He has flashbacks, triggered by certain events, which cause him great deals of trauma.

Appearance:

Magic:
Lord of the Flock: This magic allows Greg to command other birds to listen to him. He is a very charismatic pigeon and as such he can command other birds to do his bidding, though his magic helps a bit in this area.

Feather Magic: This magic allows Greg to use his own feathers and the feathers of others to attack often making the feathers sharp enough to cut fabric. However these feathers can’t cut through steel or anything stronger than thin leather.

Physic connection: Gregory can speak to other races through the use of relaying messages directly into the mind of others, this allows him to communicate though it only has so much range.

Techniques: Greg often utilizes a tactic of constantly having other birds near him. Many of them will listen and come to his aid at his very call. These other birds are almost mind controlled and as such will sacrifice their own lives in order to protect Gregory. Gregory will also sometimes use the feathers of his fellow birds in order to create a sort of storm to allow him to escape from the carnage.

Skills: Greg does not have much in the way of attacking without magic. The only skill’s he does claim to have however unusually accurate aim when it comes to where he is pooping. He can also spot bread crumbs from about 100 feet away.

Equipment: Greg has nothing on him except for his army of other birds of all kinds, this goes from vultures, to hawks, even to chickens and flightless birds when they are near him.

Personality: Gregory is a very egotistical bird. He will do whatever he can to raise his own ego and even prove to others how superior he is to them. Sadly this also makes him a very sore loser when it comes to battles and the such. Often this goes to the point where he will leave behind ‘presents’ for the other party to find. Quite often this means spoiling their food whenever he gets the chance.
Gregory is also quite the womanizer, often quite liking women that are shorter and sometimes (though rarely) going after short men as well.

History: Gregory was born a bit unusual among his kind. There has always been legends of monsters and animals that have the ability to use magic, but they were just that legends. That was until Gregory Philmus was born. At first many other birds feared him for his strange abilities, however he has learned that he is extremely charismatic when it comes to asking other birds to listen to him. As such Gregory has slowly been gaining a reputation.

After about the first year of discovering his abilities he quickly learned that others would try to hunt him down. As such he started to amass an army of other birds to help protect him. Though he has started learn more about magic as well, as such he soon realized that there was a way to make other birds just like him. He has started to learn more about magic in hopes of giving other birds powers like him so he won’t be the only one of his kind.

Other: Gregory has a weakness for pumpkin seeds and pretty female birds. He is also far more intelligent than the average bird.

Magic: Glyph

Glyph magic utilizes a variation of symbols in combination with the casters intents to create effects, and is limited by the sacrifice the caster is willing to give, and what the caster can. There are thousands of ‘Bases’ for a spell, but each Base has only three degrees, which determine the focus, effect, and cost of the spell. Complex spells can be created by using multiple bases, but these tend to be more intricate than powerful, as a cost for each base must be applied. The second degree does not have to match the first degree of a spell; a mismatched second degree will cause half of the cost to come from the origin of the second degree. Otherwise the third degree always matches the first degree of the spell. The greatest danger in using Glyphs is self-control, as a spell cannot be withdrawn once cast. The caster does not always have to pay the price, and as many can pay as are in physical contact with the glyph itself, and are willing participants in the spell. As such, some cities are built around the concept, utilizing their rulers as the caster and the citizens as participants for legendary feats in protective measures. However, many practitioners have suffered for paying costs beyond themselves for the deed. The lucky ones died quickly.

Techniques:

Base

Fire: Energy, heat, pain
Water: Flow, cold, will
Air: Synergy, velocity, spirit
Earth: Endurance, force, strength

Type

First Degree: The focused element of a spell, determining the major element and outlining the ‘goal’ of a spell.
Second Degree: This is the ‘nature’ of a spell, determining the active component of the spell.
Third Degree: This is the sacrifice the mage gives in exchange for the spell, and is synonymous with the first degree. (Sometimes factored by the second as well, however.)

Shape

Within: The mage embraces the magic within himself to bring out physical effects in line with the degrees. The most dangerous but

effective of methods, pulling out the mages full potential in perfect balance for an exchange of a greater cost in the third degree. This also represents the only way another glyph mage may combat another, absorbing the spell within themselves- as well as offering up the third degree of the spell again. Most Glyph casters will avoid this as much as possible though, as the doubling of the cost (from the initial caster, and the cost from the absorbing caster) results in much greater power, which is hard to control and harder to direct- sometimes leading to a loss of sanity.

Without: Out and into the world, where the control of the mage fades over the distance between the glyph and the outer effects of

the spell. This is easier method, but misbalanced, focusing on the second degree of a spell. Larger glyphs have far greater ranges than smaller ones.

Skills: Cooking, camping, basic first-aid, riding, reading, writing, dancing, juggling
Equipment:

Three black metal rings, each etched with various glyphs for quickly casting spells. He has a scattering of them through his pack, as disposable things that can break/melt/disappear from time to time.
Glyphed Boots: Air in the first, second, and third degree
Glyphed Gloves: Earth in the first, second, and third degree
Glyphed Underwear: Water in the first, earth in the second, and combined third degree

Personality:

Conrad is generally a kind man, choosing to use his gift to help others. He is calm and tries to empathize with those around him. He represents that fool you see giving a street urchin an apple, despite the fact that the wretch was just caught trying to rob him a moment ago. He feels a degree of duty towards those that are less fortunate.

History:

Conrad’s mother died in childbirth, and he grew up primarily on his uncle’s farm, with his father stopping by as often as possible to spend time with him. When he was old enough to be taught magic, his father took him on as an apprentice in the craft, though he refused to teach Conrad anything beyond the basics- citing “The more glyphs you know, the less creative and the less familiar with the costs you will be. Learn your limits now, and when you are older you can decide for yourself.”

Though irritated in his teenage years by the philosophy, experience taught him the wisdom of the concept. He stayed with the four basic elements, broadening his understanding and familiarity with them. When the young caster turned twenty, he completed the apprenticeship and headed out on his own, though he and his father keep contact through letters and the occasional visit.
