| Character Differences | Cheerful, friendly, optimistic, and naive when it comes to human social interactions, this Starfire is similar to many others. Her powers are based on emotions. She loves deeply and openly, and has a fiery, dangerous temper. She also has a tendency to be calmer and subdued, especially during the night when almost everyone else is asleep. Thanks to the people she met on Earth, Starfire has also developed a wry, sarcastic sense of humor to accompany her usual love of 'videos about cats failing to make jumps'. She was raised in a homogenous warrior culture of honesty, honor, and warfare, and thus is inexperienced when it comes to the wide array of emotions available to her. Because of this, often times she is introverted and quiet, choosing not to act out of fear of embarrassment.
Secretly, she's traumatized by a violent falling out with her sister, and the loss of her homeworld. As well as her time in horrible captivity. PTSD isn't something a warrior princess is supposed to have, though, and she merely ignores this part of her life as best as she can. Starfire wants above all for her friends and the people she cares about to be happy. This, in turn, will grant her peace of heart.
As a Tamaran, her powers are also quite different. She is a being of starlight energy, more akin to a golem than an organic being. In her body are three organ crystals that need to be powered by sunlight in order for her to survive. Starfire also cannot fly, instead launching herself with extreme precision with explosions. Given a day of build upm she reaches a state of pure energy and travels several hundred times faster than the speed of light. She also creates simple, floating shapes in the air that she can manipulate to give her more purpose. Starfire can be creative and clever, but when need be she can lay the smackdown with her explosive abilities.
Edit: Starfire's kryptonite is a great amount of black light. In small, natural amounts it increases her power like normal but artificial black lights in great amounts can sap her abilities.
Starfire cannot eat or drink, and doesn't need to sleep. She can only heal when does sleep, and then her regenerative abilities are quite potent, but she is vulnerable while doing so. If she goes too long without the warmth of a star, she becomes more and more tired until she eventually dies.
| Brief World Background | Thirty years ago, Earth was ravaged by a being known as the Three Horned God, known in other multiverses as Trigon. Superheroes and supervillains, such as the Avengers and the Justice League, rose to defend the planet. They succeeded, but huge swathes of the Earth have been made unlivable. Monsters and demons roam wastelands, and tears are opened in reality. Even now, the cult of Blackthorn that unleashed Trigon in the first place plot and scheme to free their banished overlord. Earth is on the brink of destruction, but humanity is rebuilding. There are also many species of creatures from other dimensions that were brought in unwillingly and now try to lead peaceful lives among the humans, but face hatred and discrimination due to the actions of the Blackthorn Coven, and the fear of the humans.
Tamaran is a prosperous planet, abundant in natural resources due to their people being powered exclusively by the sun. They never shared what they had, and many envious, decaying empires sought what they had. Thus generations of children are raised for glorious battle, and Starfire was raised to lead them. Blackfire, her estranged, hateful sister, betrayed Tamaran and Starfire. Now Tamaran is under Blackfire's rule.
| Brief Character Background | Princess Koriand'r is not the name she uses anymore, but it was the one she was born with. She was raised from birth to be a soldier, and she took pride in her birthright to rule the land. When she turned 140 she began to battle the many enemies of Tamaran, jealous of its unused natural bounties. Perhaps, Starfire thinks now, Tamaran could have been more generous to its galactic neighbors. But back then, she hated them, and sought to destroy them. Her kill count is such that she doesn't keep track, instead going by battles won instead. Plus, many enemies used robots to fight in their stead, and the ones that didn't wore heavy armor, so it became difficult to tell, anyway. Everything looked the same when it was incinerated into ash.
Her amiable, cheerful demeanor meant Koriand'r made a multitude of friends on her homeworld. Kommandr, her sister, was not so lucky. She was born with a genetic defect. Her skin, pale, her hair, purple. She could only draw on the power of artificial lights she invented herself. She valued intelligence over strength, cunning over bravery. She was Koriand'r's older sister, and the throne was meant to be hers. But Kori was the favorite. Everyone loved Kori, not Kommandr. Using Kommandr's 'poor health' as an excuse, Kori was given the throne. Kori loved her sister, but she never supported her. No one did. Kommandr was all alone, the one thing she was raised to believe as important was stolen from her, and her family that was supposed to love her seemed to loathe everything she thought was good.
Starfire carries a great amount of guilt for allowing Kommandr to spiral down this dark path. When Kommandr betrayed Tamaran and seized the throne for herself with the help of Tamaran's enemies, Starfire was enraged. But she was defeated quickly and imprisoned for a year. Her family was slaughtered. Why Kommandr kept Kori alive, she couldn't guess. It was a miserable time, full of torture, interrogation, experiments. Kommandr came into Kori's room and rambled about bizarre things, justifying what hse was doing. She was...insane. And it broke Kori's heart. She couldn't bring herself to hate her sister any more, so instead she drove her anger inward. Towards herself. For being so blind, so careless, so focused on glory and battles that she could not see the desperate state of her own sister.
Starfire is also not a superhero name for her, but rather a title that is inherited by the Princess of Tamaran. She was raised a warrior princess and has 50 years of combat experience. Starfire also operates under a bizarre code of honor that clashes with occasionally with normal human social values. Such as always keeping a secret when promised, no matter what, and respecting one's family above all else. She is open about many things, but has never opened up to anyone about her past. Her temper also runs deeper than normal; she harbors an incredible amount of true rage within her loving heart. Resentment at her trauma, fury at her abusers, and self-loathing. But Starfire is strong of will and her heart is not, and will never be, hardened. It can't. Emotions are where she draws her power. The strength of her convictions are directly related to the strength of her abilities.
Which is perhaps why they faded in time. Koriand'r wasn't sure what exactly changed, but she managed to escape. She crash landed on a desolate Earth, and made her way to New York City. There she met Clio, her new best friend on Earth. Overtime Starfire came to appreciate this different, exotic culture of humans. She made friendships not based on shared battles, but genuine, emotional connections. As Clio struggled with her own issues, Starfire saw her own problems reflected. She learned to question her deeply held beliefs. Starfire isn't sure what she wants to do, now, but she likes being a superhero instead of soldier. Now hse knows killing in battle isn't glorious, it's sad. Life has value, and it should be preserved. Now she does not fight for a nation, but instead, for her friends. She still has a lot to learn, and is in many ways still selfish, but Starfire has always had an open mind and is well on her way to becoming a true hero.
That was, until once again, she found herself in captivity. It was only a few days ago. She and Clio had just finished a campaign against Clio's misguided family. On their way back to New York to meet up with the third member of their friend group, Karen, Clio stopped at a hotel to get some sleep. Starfire found herself alone as she did for the 8-12 hours most humans were asleep. So she began to wander around as she usually did, exploring and trying to meet interesting strangers. Distracted, she looked up at the stars and thought of home. Thoughts wavering, she closed her eyes, and when she opened them, was in a different place. Trapped. Imprisoned. Again. This triggered a panic response in Starfire and she has spent the last day, or several days, lashing out indiscriminately at her cell. This is her worst nightmare. She was captured and tortured once, and now, it looks like it's happening again.
