<Snipped quote by Etcetera> I'd rather not, in turn - it often just means that I have more things I have to specifically click open to see. Scrolling is an action much easier done than clicking. Found them [collapsing quotes] annoying more often than not on other sites that use them...

I hold that that is an extremity of easiness. Accessibility is key, yes, but does everything have to be too easy? It's not much of a hassle to simply click the left mouse button as you scroll. I agree about the collapsible quote boxes.

I apologise if I was in any way abrasive; I don't mean to be.

I've actually found the opposite. Generally, you only need a sentence or two for context, and you can expand if you need more.

Sometimes folks quote posts and add corrections, embellishments or emphasis to explain what they're responding to.

I often do not use a mouse to scroll (which means I'll have to fetch it specifically for that purpose), or the mouse is a laptop touchpad or even just pointing stick ("TrackPoint" on ThinkPads, also the odd little nub-thing on some laptop keyboards) and hence not half as convenient for moving the pointer around, especially when not using said laptop on a hard surface. Using a poorly responding pointing stick in a moving car to actually point at things can be a bit unfortunate...

As for what Captain said, then plenty of people make a point to only quote what was necessary for the reply, or the quote is the thing you have to read and other things are supplementary.

(I also still think that we need quotes that don't send notifications; it seems like nonmetion quotes actually do it, after all...)

Yes, it would be convenient to have the buttons be [quote], [@quote] & [@Mention] or somesuch.

There's an idea. Have the buttons be [[@][Quote]] [@Mention]. If you get what I mean, no padding between the [@] and [quote] so they appear to be two parts to a single button, making the [@] a mentionable quote.

It'd be no smaller than the rating buttons, so it's not exactly hard to hit. It preserves space. And being directly adjacent to the quote button, it makes it clear what it does.

EDIT: Mockup, because I could:

I believe the button is too small/too close to the quote. Is it that necessary to have?

well, having it separated further would make it look less like a two-function button (which is kinda the goal)...

As I said, I regard it as superfluous.

Well, there was a voice absolutely adamant that there be a way to non-mention quote without editing a post after clicking a button. So I've suggested a way that adds the ability without adding too much clutter.

Feel free to make your own suggestion.

What you or even we might regard it as is kinda irrelevant. The example above from @Whizzball1 shows why a non-mention quote would be beneficial.

I disagree; as we are all users ourselves, we understand functionality and ease of use. However, catering to every situation leads to a cluttered mess. What is necessary is either customizability, or a solution to cater to most situations.

I'd rather keep the current system than add a new button to the bottom. Perhaps add an "advanced settings" page where the user chooses whether or not to send a notification.

That sounds like much more clutter to add than adding a button with a single @ on it.

@Ellri
Not at all. The pure purpose of an Advanced Settings page is to customize your experience.

I think the button addition would be an easy workaround for the moment, considering that @Mahz has a lot more on his plate.

While not particullary bothersome, I am currently logged in through steam's ingame browser. Oddly it seems to use the mobile version of the site.

Those buttons are rather close. For people who don't use a computer mouse (eg. all mobile users), clicking one button rather than the other would be tricky.

In regards to the discussion on notifications, perhaps a good middle-ground is to sort (and maybe even group into hiders, at least if there are more than 1 or 2) notifications by thread. Thus you do not increase clutter, but the notifications are still grouped into where they come from so you don't have a mixed list.

I also prefer full quotes rather than expanding quotes. Expanding quotes require extra elements on the page, thus more to go wrong, and the first few lines only provide the proper context if the first few lines of the post are the context and not a later part of the post.

Hey, just throwing something in randomly here, so pardon me if I'm out of line.

So the status up top where you can change things from Apply to Full and back? I've noticed that once Full is clicked, it's not possible to change it back to Apply, and since I've had a couple of drop outs right at the beginning of my RP, I'd really like to reopen it and let people know to send some sheets. So if possible, would it be able to get that requested to be able to switch back? Or should I just re-post in the Interest checks?
