Sometimes it's difficult for someone like me to RP with someone because I'm not good at being descriptive. I think that's the main reason. I can do one liners or a few sentences. Maybe even a paragraph, if I'm lucky. I know I should work on my writing skills, but I guess I'm just too lazy (I know that probably sounds like a lame excuse). Whenever I see very long posts that roleplayers have typed, I feel intimidated. I wish I could "write", or type like them. Also, my characters (OC's) are really shy and quiet, but I know I should still try to be more descriptive, even if my characters don't do or say much because of their shyness. I also hate it when I'm ignored or randomly blocked just because I'm not good enough. *sigh* If you want to RP, please let me know...

Aww, hello there! ^_^

The Guild gives home to all sorts of writers. Everything and everyone has a place here, from the shortest one-liners to the deepest and most lore-rich works of almost-literature; and in accordion, from the absolute beginners to people who have more than a decade of roleplay experience.

As they say, practice makes perfect. I'll admit, descriptions have always been my bane too—who cares about all these itty-bitty details when you can just focus on the dialogues and the action? What I did was challenge myself. Go into writing a post (or maybe something else even!) with the intent of making it as descriptive as possible. Use a thesaurus or dictionary if needed. It may go slowly and be painstaking, but it's the surest way of improving. You'll be surprised at how good you got in the end!

There are plenty of resources available right here in the Articles & Guides section. This and this could prove very useful to you. @Lady Amalthea is a very knowledgeable person in general, I'm sure she would also be very glad to help you out with whatever question you have. In fact, most of us are friendly and approachable, so feel free to shoot a message at anyone you wish with any RP-related question!

Stay in Free then. Nobody will really judge you for the length of your posts there. Free seems to consist of one-liners and paragraphs at the most, so you may be more suited for that section. I'm sure that certain Arena, Tabletop, Nation and 1x1 Roleplays are the same as well.

Personally, I'm horrible at describing and can still hash out at least three paragraphs if I need to. I also struggle to write posts due to my ADD (I can't sit still long enough to write posts sometimes), but despite the circumstances, if you're passionate enough about the subject, then you should be able to overcome anything that might stand between you and it. I should also note that post-by-post Roleplaying isn't for everyone and some prefer Roleplaying through chat, email and even videogames. It's possible that post Roleplaying isn't your preferred medium and you just haven't found it yet.

Ah, descriptions. Always so fickle, always so tricky. I still have a hard time finding the words to describe a feeling or scenario. I suppose some tricks I use is to find pictures that resemble a setting or person or something in the RP, then try to find the words to describe what I or what I think my character feel about it. Smells, tastes, emotions. Incorporate some of it in your writing. Use similes and metaphors and fluctuating sentence lengths. Just feel the words.

Additionally, write when you can and write freely. Read when you can, and look up writing tips online. Find fancy words, don't be afraid to break a few rules, and always remember to have fun.

@MyZelda9 Okay, first thing - Stop and take a breath. Then ditch the I'm not good enough attitude. Everyone started off as crap, just depends on what age that was. The stuff I used to post when I started with online BB Rp's or Chat rooms back on WinMX and Prodigy... Omg... It made the Free Section look like Shakespeare.

It does take time to get better but surprisingly it doesn't take as much effort as one would think. You just have to add a little more at a time. Don't try to go from what you are currently posting to 20 pages in one night. Look to add just one more line per post at a time. Easiest way to do that? Simple - pick one thing to focus on. Say your character is talking to someone and they ask directions.

Your character can go - "Yeah, you head down the street three blocks and turn left. It's about half a mile down on the right."

That could be your post but if you pick a single thing to add you expand your post. Let us pick hand gestures. - "Yeah, you head down the street three blocks and turn left. It's about half a mile down on the right," he said as he lifted his arm and pointed down the street and then gestured around the corner.

See, just a little more. Over time, add more and more things. I have a list of things I try to touch on when I have a character responding to another. Eyes(Darting, looking this way or that, narrowing, so forth), hands (are they at my characters sides, held up, in my pockets, etc.), lips (Pursed, agape, slack jawed, blah, blah blah) - I just add in what is relevant.

Just start with the basics and work slowly. It won't take long before it becomes second nature and you are pumping out posts you never thought you could.

And never be afraid to join an Rp where you would be around people you want to be able to post like. Join it! You never know what you will pick up. ^_^

Because i have to ask, "What do you feel comfortable with?"

I ask this because you're quite concerned about what everyone thinks and the amount of stuff you have to read. The beauty about the Guild is that we have 3 main categories (Free, Casual and Advanced) along with specialty categories (1x1s, Arena, NRP and Tabletop) so in theory... we have just the right RP for you! ;D (its just sometimes buried really well)

If you are shy, try a 1x1 and be clear about your play style. A 1x1 is a great place to get some confidence seeing as it's a bit private and you're the only focus. Group RPs, if not run well, can occasionally miss the quiet players, but given the right GM you might open up a bit.
