So, I'm not fully set up idea-wise, (in part why I'm putting it in interest to gauge ideas and what people would want.) The flat, general premise is that the king is dying. Before he does so he sends out a challenge to all of his heirs. A game. A game to be the first to reach a prize, and become the new king of the land.
But on the day the challenge is to start, the three royals stand at the side of the kings bed, when a stranger walks in. And then another. And another. Until ships are docking by the port with heirs. The king has many children, far more than a mere three, and more than a dozen! All from different walks of life, and all rulers of their respective lives. One may be a merchant, but not a common one. No, he runs a vast market, making him fabulously wealthy. Another may be a knight, but a captain of the guard! Another a monk, who is respected by many for his wisdom. Another is a pirate king. Another a king of bandits. Another a king of the homeless and runs an operation through them.

Basically, a story of trickery, character drama, and 'possibly' vengeance.

Since it's the base of an idea, I'm open to ideas, or even what kind of stuff people would like to see. The setting would be kind of generic fantasy, with plenty of strange creatures and magic.

Any questions?

Hmm, I might be interested in this. An idea I have is being some kind of professor of magic who doesn't really want the throne, but participates to make sure that whoever does get it is suitable to run the country. He likes his father, but doesn't want the crown going to someone who won't rule the country properly.

That's perfectly fine. I love the idea of characters who are in it for alternative motives or reasons. After all, that kind of conflict breeds excellent character interactions.

Holy hell am I interested. I was in the middle of reading through the idea and you said something about a pirate and I signed up. I'm signing up. As a pirate.

Now my questions is... His father is a dying king but are there other Kings of this playground we are in?

Honestly, I want to leave people out from playing as kings or queens of foreign countries. Simply because having an army at your beck and call would completely favor them.

But, there are other kingdoms, I suppose? I'd have to think about it, since I don't want to involve the issue of external politics that lead to one person being favored simply because they RP'd a private scenario of sending a letter to Ugthor the Mighty and his army of dwarves cutting a deal.

Nope I like that. It keeps things simple. I'm down.

Then I am interested.
Just some questions. Why would the king's bastards be considered equal to his rightful children? How is it with magic in the world? Is there some closer specification on the "game"?

So I'm honestly doing the whole bastards thing in the sense that he declares anybody of royal blood, and not just his own kids. Because he feels it would give way to a true king from wherever they ended up in life. Mostly because it opens more character opportunities than "Here are the few rightful rulers, they all lived in a castle, maybe one hates the other." Which would be tried and kinda dull by now.

As for what the game is, I'm honestly trying to figure one out that's balanced-ish. Like at the moment I'm thinking a mcguffin has been hidden somewhere in the kingdom and the first to find it is the true heir, but then somebody would probably try some kind of "I found it in the backyard, I am the winner now!" kinda thing. Again, as stated above it's an idea in it's very rough stages, and I'm open to what people would like/not like out of this scenario.

As for magic, I'd keep it fairly balanced. No masters of the cosmos who can bend space and stuff like that. Honestly I think around level 5 in DnD would be a fairly open but not abusable place to start.

The great thing about your idea right now is the fact that it's very open. There's an item somewhere in the world that we must find and that's it. Essentially no one can say "I found it in the backyard..." because the only person who knows the location would be you as the GM. You can just simply say... "No you didn't find it" and then move on.

In fact, most of the conflict will probably surround the various heirs as they struggle against each other in an attempt to find clues to this object's location. In the mean time, you can create this location and start dropping hints to facilitate the players finding the prize... like a trail of bread crumbs.

Also wanted to know how you feel about the addition of airships or if you wanted to keep your pirates... "grounded"... heheh.

Honestly not sure? I always liked the idea of sky pirates, but since I'm fine adding dragons, I don't deny the appeal of Sky Pirates. I'll ponder it.

Interested. I am however tentative as I while I am flexible in fantasy I tend to create redundant characters so if I can't make a character that doesn't seem to have a niche I might drop so if I'm late to the party don't count me out until I say I'm out.

I’m interested! I don’t have a character in mind yet, but I’m sure I’d be able to think of something

Yep look up Jadwiga of Poland or Tamar of Georgia, they were both Kings. This was more of a political move so foreigners or pagans wouldn't rule over the country.

Thank you all for your interest. I'm still plotting stuff, like the world, monsters, magical limitations, and the like.
