I suppose outside of some role changes, we just need one player and we can start troubleshooting. So weird that we will end up with two female protagonists in this isekai story. Kind of like we’re bringing isekai back to its roots. So, I guess the question I should ask the players who have expressed interest (and posted sheets) so far is which of you would prefer to do spellcaster over rogue.

Kaito is the kind of person who, despite being a target of constant ridicule, is somehow still some form of optimist. Once upon a time, he could have been called self conscious, angry, and pretty damn weird. However, after years and years of it, he came out on the other side. Sure, he may not always smile on the outside, but on the inside, he’s grinning a big ol’ grin, and even when he’s not, he’ll do his best to hide it.

Thanks to years of experience, Kaito is basically a sponge for emotional abuse, utilizing and even weaponizing years of bullying to become what can only be described as an ‘emotional meatshield’. He will regularly take advantage of this fact, and intentionally draw peoples ire towards him to help his friends. This is due in part to his status as a massive otaku, with many of his morals being inspired by anime protagonists over the years.

Unfortunately, despite being ready to take abuse, it hasn’t exactly helped his confidence. He tends to have a hard time talking to people when he’s not trying to redirect their irritation towards him, and even worse, he has an unfortunate tendency to do so by accident.

Finally, he loves humor and jokes and stuff, just like most other people his age. However, he’s not exactly what you’d call good at it, generally gravitating towards either brutal self deprecation or dad jokes. 
C O N C E P T
If there was one concept that would perfectly encapsulate Kaito, it would be ‘the meatshield’. He will often try to put himself in harms way while subtly shifting the original target from the aggressors sights, although he isn’t quite as good at taking actual, physical damage as he is emotional abuse. Perhaps when he was seven, when his parents died in a car crash, he moved in with his grandparents, and he spent his time getting into fights with other kids and just generally being angry at the world, but now, eleven years later? Now he’s really pretty weak.

He was only in his whole ‘fighting phase’ for about a year before it started going downhill. The rage he had inside him, the anger at the unfairness of his parents being ripped away from him without him even knowing, it simply faded with time. He started losing the fire that drove him in fights, which quickly led to him losing them more and more often. Eventually, he just sort of gave up, leaving him with a complete lack of motivation and an equally bad lack of charisma, the latter remaining to this very day.

Now that he couldn’t embrace his negative feelings in fights, he decided to try and escape them. This led to him retreating into the wonderful world of anime, where he somehow managed to discover a number of actual, honest to god role models. He had a particular fondness for Vash the Stampede and Kenshin Himura, characters who regularly put themselves in harms way to protect others. Before the year was over, Kaito had made his choice. From then on, he would become a shield. After all, he was already being bullied for his freakishly tiny irises. Why not use it to do some good?

Unfortunately, no matter how well he thought he could handle it, near constant bullying and life ambitions based on anime generally don’t do a whole lot of good, and his school life suffered heavily. His grades ended up dropping, and by the time he was in highschool, his results rarely made it out of the bottom quarter of the class, let alone the bottom half. It was getting to the point where he was beginning to lose hope. Even with support from his grandparents, nothing he tried seemed to be helping.

At this point, he just hopes he can keep up the front of someone who can take the abuse people keep firing at him, and keep it bottled up within him. It’s been getting harder and harder recently, but if he can finally crush that sadness down for good, then maybe, just maybe, he can do what he’s wanted to do for the past decade.

He can help people, without his naturally appalling charisma getting in the way.

Toshinari is a cautious and somewhat reserved individual, constantly trying to mitigate risk and always opting to take the easiest path in any way he can. His guarded lifestyle makes him pragmatic and resourceful from time to time, but it also makes him self-conscious, and is the source of a great deal of his frustration. Toshinari is, or at least he fears himself to be, an uninteresting person. From his perspective, he has no outstanding talents or so-called "meaningful" hobbies since he didn't try looking for any — the possibility of failure meant he should stick to what he knew, or was absolutely certain he could do, after all.

The only real hobby he has is gaming. He plays them frequently, but thankfully never crossed over the hikkikomori event horizon. Toshinari plays games and watches anime for entertainment, just as others do, but also does so as an escape from his so-perceived boring life, he gravitates to games that let him play warrior roles, since they let him exercise traits that he doesn't have in real life; bravery, heroism and a little bit of recklessness. The best part of it all being that games would always let you restart and try again, so Toshinari could take as many risks as he wanted without there being any true consequences.

All in all, Toshinari is someone who wants to avoid regrets by playing things safe, but ends up forming regrets because he's playing things safe. But in spite of his careful disposition, Toshinari is very good at hiding his own concerns to stop others from worrying, and will often take steps to prevent those concerns from becoming a reality.
C O N C E P T

For as long as he could remember, Toshinari had been averse to challenges. He was born to a single, yet very optimistic mother, who would praise him for the smallest of things. For a child, getting praise and attention for accomplishing easy things would be a dream, but it made Toshinari uncomfortable with difficult things, since he would struggle and fail. He hated the feeling of disappointment that came with falling short of people's expectations, but by taking the easiest avenues to success, by weighing his options to avoid disappointing people.

His school years were a monotonous cycle of attendance, and returning home to play video games. He had above-average grades, but that was because he had more time to study since he had no hobbies outside of living out his fantasies in video games. Even if he wanted to break the cycle by getting a new interest (be it an instrument, art or some other hobby entirely), he rationalized that everyone else had gotten a head start already and so he shouldn't bother with it, which, naturally, only served to make the gap in skill even larger. At the very least, the grades kept his mother happy. Granted, most things did.

Before he knew it, he had managed to pile up a bunch of regrets over the things he didn't try. Teenage years were supposed to be a time where you could explore your life and the world, and yet Toshinari hadn't done any of that at all. He had reached adulthood without any meaningful experiences to show for it, all thanks to his defeatist mindset. 

Above all else, Toshinari wants a second chance to life live to its fullest, in spite of his pressing concerns over failing at things or how difficult things may get.

His character development would mostly focus around his attempts to embody the traits that he imposes onto his RPG characters, juxtaposed by his more average teenage self.

That, and I get to write his internal monologue, as he panics over his attempted brash decision-making.

Which is fun.
