October 31st, 1943 - This Way And That

Ben raised a brow and glanced over towards Alexandra, taking a long pull from his smoke. He blew it out roughly before flicking it to the ground and putting the butt out with the heel of his boot. "A'right," he said as he finished blowing the thick cloud of smoke from his lungs. Licking his lips a bit he looked around the place. "I know about a grave because I's was told. The grave in particular is Peter Keystones." In turn he crossed his arms over his chest, rocking slightly on his feet from one foot to another before continuing. "Now I answered what ya should be askin', now ya gotta to show me where the grave is." Motioning for her to lead the way he waited for her to take him to the grave site. It was a bit off from where they were, after all it was down by the waters edge of the swamp under a tree over that way but it wouldn't take too long to walk there.

Samson narrowed his eyes a bit and shook his head as it tilted back to look up at Rita Sue. The woman was tall for a female but that really didn't matter considering Samson was all of three and a half feet tall on a good day. "Don't be givin' me that Rita Sue. Management has kept us going with a lot less loss of life than Belyakov so suck it up Rita Sue, I ain't got time for one of yer tantrums today. Last one nearly got Ben offed," Samson quipped before walking off back towards the trailer that pale woman had gone into some time ago.

Rita huffed and crossed her arms over her chest before growling under her breath. "I know girl, I get where you're going," the bearded woman said as she walked over to the blonde huffy woman. The parasol keeping her out of the sun as he beards curl flickered in the wind. Rita looked over towards her and scoffed.

"Don't even start Lila. You're just still itching after the shit storm with Lodz, don't be trying to poke this hornets nest," Rita Sue snipped before storming off towards the tent which had painted on it - The Cooch.

Faith Masters

Location: Carnival Setup -> Toward Kitchen House
Skills: N/A

She watched Gil walk away, concern on her face. As far as she was aware, he was the only remaining Emendator around and that was cause for concern. They were all still inexperienced at this, even with training. She desperately wanted Eve back. But now was not the time to be standing around feeling bad. She went back to Bart who was trying to convince Alexandra to come and the girl didn't seem convinced. Faith fought the urge to bitch slap the girl, who seemed to be entranced with Ben.

"Bart, leave her. If she'd rather spend time around the carnival that nearly collapsed before, that's on her. We have important work to discuss that she obviously doesn't care about." It was, more or less, a ruse to get her to bite. Even if she ignored her and didn't follow, it was no skin off her bones. She began walking to the Kitchen House, hoping the others were around so she could grab them.

And as it turned out, they were walking in the same direction. "Paradox meeting at the kitchen house. We need to discuss all of this." She called out to James, Sophia, and Andromeda.

Location: Ville au Camp Carnival Setup. -> Kitchen House.
Skills: N/A

Sophia stopped for a moment looking over at Gilbert seeing the Emendator was in some kind of pain by the looks of it, she didn't really know to be honest. And then started to make his way back towards the main house by the looks of it she rubbed the back of her neck wondering if he was alright or not. It seemed like they were all going to be heading to the kitchen house for some kind of meeting as Faith walked over and informed them. "Alright then, meet you guys over there." She looked at Andromeda and then James, she was curious how they both died as well. "Sounds like a plan then." Sophia stared at Ben and Alexandra who was more fixated on the carney then anything, which she found a bit odd.

They had their orders really, they needed to be at the kitchen house for something, as she started to make her way over towards the kitchen house. She walked over towards the window and leaned herself up against the counter looking out the window as she stared at some of the carnies that went back about their duties. "So should we wait for Gilbert or let him rest a bit?" Sophia asked, there wasn't any other Emendator on the grounds which was worrisome to her as well, with a group of carnies that outnumbered them.

Alexandra Andonova

Don't judge a book by its cover.
- George Eliot

Location: Ville au Camp (The Grounds) - Oak Tree ⇢ Towards the Kitchen House
Skills: N/A

Alexandra's smile faded some as Ben answered her. It was clear that the man was still withholding information, only giving her the bare minimum. She didn't like that. She didn't trust that. Whether it was of his own will or simply something chosen and enforced upon him was anyone's guess, but that was really beside the point. She still didn't know exactly who these people were, how they knew about this place, and why they were even here in the first place. She arched a brow at him, glancing past him before looking back at him.

"How about--" she began, before she was more or less cut off. Her gaze flitted over to Faith. Her jaw clenched a bit, and her eyes narrowed marginally at the other Paradox's jab at her. However, she bit her tongue. She glanced back over at Bart and motioned for him to follow Faith. She then turned her attention back to Ben. "How about instead of leading you there myself, I just tell you vhere you need to go," she replied, before leaning in towards him slightly. "You knov stranger danger, and all." The corners of her lips pulled back up into a smile, albeit a tight one, as she pulled away again.

"It's off that way, past the Main House and down at the swamp. The grave is by the water's edge under a tree. It shouldn't be too hard to find," she explained as she pointed out the direction that he needed to go. She was half tempted to give him false directions but ultimately decided against it, as it could just end up biting her in the butt. Besides, he hadn't been inherently rude to her, so why should she be rude to him? "Nov if you would excuse me," she said, before promptly walking off in the direction that the others were headed.

Gilbert Summers, "The Hat"

Location: Ville au Camp (Main House -> His Quarters: Room 203)
Skills: Perception

Gilbert's steps came with just a hair of unsteadiness. He continued to set one foot in front of the other, at this moment oblivious to most of what was going on around him. Even Bartholomew's offer to lend his Paradox gifts to his aid seemed to drill into his head with every syllable. The offer was appreciated, granted, but ultimately pointless. This was the price he paid for stretching his own gifts beyond their intended purpose. You bend the rules enough, they start to bend you back. He waved Bart away, intoning as politely as he could (circumstances permitting), "Nothing you can do. Thank you." He flashed an obviously forced smile and continued on his way.

Before very long his mildly distressed boots came to clack softly upon the wood of the Main House's flooring. Just as carefully as he dared to, Gilbert located the nearest steps and made his way to his room on the second floor. He wasn't sure how long this would continue to afflict him, and he did not want anyone else to see him in a compromised condition if he could help it. The Paradoxes might understand, and indeed would see him in worse states as the years droned on, but these Carnival people? No. He didn't know them, they didn't know him, and on the chance that any one of them had hostile of ulterior motive, he did not want to encourage them.

Quietly, he turned the key in his lock and swung open the door. He wished at that time only to cover his windows and close his eyes, either to meditate until the pain subsided or take a nap and hope that it left of its own accord by the time he woke. But what he saw scrambled both of those possibilities. It was a note; folded paper with his name written on the outside in Giosue's metered and easily legible handwriting. He stood, staring at it for a moment before placing one hand upon the doorframe for support, leaning down, and snatching it up. Gilbert shook it open and gave it due, serious consideration. After all, what needed to be said in a note that couldn't have been communicated in person earlier that morning? As he read, the look of annoyed incredulity became obvious, were anyone around to see it.

"...leaving... blah blah Golgotha... counsel... blah blah indeterminate period in timelines..." he read it three times, slowly, before he let his hand hang at his side. With a sigh, Gilbert sat on his bed and rested his throbbing head in his free hand. Though it pained him to do so, the tall Emendator spoke aloud, "That bastard. It is not the time for this." For once in a very long time, The Hat was the sole Emendator in Ville au Camp, otherwise populated by a cadre of baby Paradoxes, and now an unknown factor of carnival folk who outnumbered them a few times over and likewise contained individuals who possessed abilities setting them apart from natural humanity. Very powerful abilities. From the feel of the note that Gio left, he might be gone for a long, long time. Gil was once a great leader - militant and strong, the ruler of the first truly great empire of men. Commander of countless people in conflicts almost innumerable across the millennia. A sharp contrast to the laid-back, casual person he had become over the last couple of centuries or so. He actually enjoyed just basking in what Humanity had to offer, and the natural wonders of the Earth. This... this might have to change that, at least for a while.

Him being in charge was a mixed blessing at best for these Paradoxes. He would have to be the Field Marshal once again, filling the roles of all the other Emendators, without help nor advice from the others he had come to rely upon. But he couldn't do any of that until the battle in his head stopped its infernal bombing run.

Oh, if Evelina could see him now.

James Grady

Location: Ville au Camp (Carnival Setup -> Kitchen House)
Skills: Perception

The mention from Andromeda that coffee sounded like a good idea was met with direct and optimistic approval from James. "Hells yeah, coffee sounds good!" He had noted the color appearing in her cheeks. While unsure as to why she seemed embarrassed about something (because he was fairly oblivious to things of this nature, in general), he didn't want her condition to deepen because of unwanted attention paid to it. Hence, a sudden burst of energetic speech to draw eyes to himself instead. "Used to run with this Army Cap'n back in the day, right? Man loved him some coffee. Risk his neck for a cup of instant, if'n he had to." By context and various obscure hand gestures, it was apparent that he meant in his pre-Paradox life. "Grim sumbitch could make some hooch, too. We used to get slap tore-up sometimes, when we found someplace we thought was safe an' he had some extra we wasn't usin' for fuel or whatnot... anyways, sometimes he'd joke around sayin':" James put on a fake serious face and altered his voice to poorly approximate a mild Virginian accent, "...heh... 'I like my coffee like I like my women: ...ground up and jammed in the freezer!'"

He did his best to suppress a giggle, which was to say not very well. "Nah, he's good people though. Hey, Miss Sophia, you 'member Cap'n Ash? Sometimes, that man actually smiled. True story." James grinned as he nodded his head, though inwardly he felt a sense of odd nostalgia. He had good friends, even in the hell that was his timeline. Part of him still wanted to know how they were all doing.

He gave Faith a wave as she gave them the information about heading to the Kitchen House, which worked out pretty well for him considering that he was going exactly to that location for his own purposes right that second. Sophia's concern about waiting for Gilbert was noted, although James didn't really have a good answer for her. Luckily, that didn't stop him from from supplying one. "Dunno. But if he wants java, he need to hurry up."

True to his word, as soon as he made it into the Kitchen House, the first thing James did was set up the drip percolator and get a sizeable pot of strong, black ambrosia going. "It's them little luxuries you miss, when your world's overrun with walkin' dead folks. Miss Andy, how d'you take yours?" He hastily added, "Coffee, not dead folks."

Bartholomew Rosecliff

Location: Ville au Camp (Main House) - Carnival Setup -> Kitchen House
Skills: N/A

Bart was disappointed in Alexandra's initial reaction. He didn't expect to just be listened to, but he had hoped that she would do more than wave him off. He looked over at Faith, and held up a finger. He wanted to give her a chance to move on with them, not being one to give up so easily. He watched her exchange with Benjamin, and his lips widened into a smile when she ultimately decided to join them. Turning his back to head towards the Kitchen House. Getting their collective shit together was important, and while there was really no way for them to have been prepared for this situation, the fact that it was coincidence that all of them seemed to get in the together here really worried him.

As he walked towards the Kitchen House, he began to think about ways to mitigate this in the future. This wouldn't be a problem in the 21st century of course, cellphones had been a luxury he'd known for much of his life, and lacking that easy access to mass communication made solving problems like this very difficult. He almost wondered if they could rig up some type of basic alarm system, that would make it easy to get them to gather in the event of an emergency. The main issue he saw with that was, even if it was achievable, he couldn't think of a reasonable system design that wouldn't be horribly overt. Maybe this would be the something to mention to the rest of the Paradoxes, an implementation of some kind of protocol in event of emergencies.

Bartholomew was well lost in his thoughts by the time he got in the kitchen house, practically walking on autopilot. He leaned against the wall as he waited for the rest of them to gather here. His eyes were pointed well at the ground as he thought, but his attention was diverted by the smell of coffee. His nose crinkled a little bit at the scent, never being the biggest fan of the stuff. To him, tea had much more nuance and depth of flavor, but hey, whatever made people happy. He was half tempted to make a cup for himself, but he didn't want himself distracted from the conversation that was about to ensue.

Faith Masters

Location: Kitchen House
Skills: N/A

Faith entered the Kitchen House and waited for the others. She wasn't in charge, not by a long shot, but Gil had confided in her, even briefly, so she felt it necessary to try and get things started. Sophia joined and so did James and Andromeda. Bart came in after, and she didn't see Alexandra behind him so she assumed she was still making flirty times with Ben. The moron. Well, it didn't matter. The majority were there.

"I believe we should let Gil rest for a bit. As far as we know, he is the only Emendator around now. I imagine that will take a toll. He wanted us to come together to discuss recent events. I'm leaving the floor open for anyone to speak up and say what they think we should do or what they think about all of this. I've spoken already about this. I don't know what the circus is here for, but I don't trust them. Even disregarding the recent mishap, I don't have a good feeling about them. But we obviously saw what happened. I got the feeling Gil doesn't like them either."

"So, what do we do?"

Andromeda Aldrich

Location: Ville au Camp - Carnival Set Up -> Kitchen House
Skills: N/A

Andromeda's eyes widened and had she been drinking anything, it would have been a perfect spit take moment. Some might have been offended by that sort of joke, but she was used to macabre humor. Most of the people in her former life had been excellent with it - after all, she ran her father's haunted hotel from his death until her own death. If she couldn't take a classic dead woman in a freezer joke, then she wouldn't have lasted long in that role - well, she didn't last long, but that was for unrelated reasons. Demonic reasons.

"I take my coffee straight - and my dead people sautéed," Andromeda told James as they entered the Kitchen House. Most of the others seemed to be there - minus the Emendators and the Carnival Folk. Faith seemed to have slid into a leadership position, something that Andy found interesting. Of course, she had to admit that in some ways, Faith was suited for it - she had the commanding personality down.

"I think that whatever we do...We should run it by Gil first," Andy replied, thinking it through. "Our track record on surviving is...not great. That's why we're here, after all...But... I think we need to gather information. Knowledge is power - and right now, they have all of the facts and seem to know more about us than we do about them..."

October 31st, 1943 - This Way And That

"Well that wasn't the bargain girl. It was show me, not tell," he said before shaking his head a bit. "I'll remember that," he added before shoving his hands in his pockets and turning on his heels. He wasn't sure where she was going of what she had heard considering they were alone by an oak tree with no one even around them. It was odd to him that she should run off and he hadn't a fucking clue what stranger danger was. It wasn't a turn of phrase that was used during his life, maybe she was just an odd one, she did have a funny accent.

Bens turn of heel didn't put him in the direction of the grave, it put him heading back towards the Carnivale, crossing the road and looking like he was making a leisurely paced beeline towards the trailer marked management. Samson caught a glimpse of Ben walking towards the trailer he was headed for and waited for the boy. Ben had managed to pull out another cigarette and light it up. "Find it?"

"Told where it was but I ain't seen it yet," he said before taking a puff and rubbing his bottom lip with his thumb.

"Thinking they're the same?" Samson asked and Ben shook his head again as the smoke billowed out from his.

"Naw, I mean that big guy I am pretty sure it but the rests of them? Like they're missing something." His voice was slow in his talk and he looked down at Samson. "Anyways, don't think they are. Gonna talk to management."

"Yeah, you and me both kid," Samson said before turning and hobbling towards Managements trailer. Climbing up the stairs and opening the door. He looked back and spotted Ben standing there looking around. "Well you coming?" he called out and Bens head snapped around. Their eyes locked and Ben nodded. The boy breaking out in a short jog to catch up before moving up the steps of the trailer. The door shutting behind the two mismatched men as they entered.

Sophia Harris

Location: Ville au Camp, Kitchen House.
Skills: Sense Acuity

Sophia looked over seeing Bart coming in next as James started to get the coffee brewed, she walked over and pulled up a seat as she leaned forward and started to think for a moment. Hearing James bringing up their previous timeline she smiled a bit, though she didn't really have a whole lot of time to know Ashton really. "I do remember him, whenever he came into the infirmary but didn't know him personally." Sophia said as she took off her fake hand. "I was to busy you know hooked up on pain meds and doing some physical therapy back in the infirmary. So I never got to see him smile, but totally a military guy." Sophia said softly, and laughed a bit at Andromeda's joke about having dead people being sautéed.

Her eyes then looked up at Faith as she started to speak up, informing Gilbert would have been her opinion if they found out any kind of information on the carnies just across from the Kitchen House. Sophia closed her eyes as she decided to tune in and listen in on the conversations going on at the faire grounds. She easily started to pick up on the conversation between Ben and Samson by the Management Cart. "So I've been kind of listening in on their conversations." Sophia said as she gestured to her head.

"They are interested in something, I think maybe Peter's grave or something, and I think they know what Gilbert is Emendator and all they are also talking about us to." Sophia said as she leaned back in the chair. "I think let Gilbert rest up a bit, keep our distance and find out what we can from a distance will work best, what do you guys think?" Sophia suggested.

Gilbert Summers, "The Hat"

Location: Ville au Camp (Main House, His Quarters: Room 203)
Skills: N/A

Gilbert sat on his bed, head in his hands. This must be what normal people referred to as a "Migraine Headache", though he had to assume that it was more than just that. His cranium felt like it might push apart from the inside. While he might actually live through something like that, even if it happened to him in a literal sense, it was not a thing which he was in a hurry to experience. Instead, he positioned himself over Giosue's note and committed himself to read it several times over, almost as a mantra against the OUCH which threatened to consume him.

The note itself lay upon the floor between his boots. His head was suspended by his large, powerful hands on either side, elbows resting upon his knees. He remained as still as possible, hunched over while sitting on the side of his bed, mentally repeating the words upon the paper over and over. Through the haze of his condition, Gil was yet able to realize the implications of the decision that his fellow Emendator had made. What he couldn't quite wrap his brain around was his motivation for doing so.

It was supposed to be his mission, heading to New York a few decades from their time loop to speak with Golgotha and his clique of fellow immortals (Or near enough anyway, they had been around longer than some of the Emendators had been aware of themselves). He was to take a promising young Paradox with him to both assist and learn from the experience. Gio had opened the portal to their intended location, and they would have immediately stepped through were it not for the arrival of the carnival. Maybe he knew something that Gil didn't. Or maybe he surmised that Ville Au Camp had a better chance, in case something went wrong, that a warrior as seasoned as Gilgamesh of Uruk at the helm.

Yet here he was, away from the Paradoxes while unknown parties set up a ramshackle "county fair" style attraction on the other side of a clearing from where he generally took his breakfast. He was indisposed during a crucial moment, and this was because he became impatiant and tried to push his abilities beyond their metaphysical intent. He could only hope that the debilitating discomfort would relent enough to allow him to lead his Paradoxes. There literally wasn't anyone left.

No, to hell with it. He had to get up. He had to move. He needed to be there for his Paradoxes. Slowly, Gilbert stood and staggered to his door. He leaned against the frame for a good few seconds, berating himself for showing such weakness in the face of possible trouble. A growl built up within him that turned into a roar, flaring pain within his skull to capacity. He didn't pass out. This was a good sign. Now, to put one foot in front of the other. Just move a boot, then another. Repeat. He was supposed to be better than this.

James Grady

Location: Ville au Camp (Kitchen House)
Skills: N/A

Andromeda's comeback of comical sarcasm was not immediately expected, but it did further broaden the smile on James's face. He poured a cup of the strong, black stuff into a ceramic cup even as it was still brewing. A little stronger than the cups that would follow, but the rest would be just fine. Still, sauteed dead people? He'd seen cannibals in his living years. Generally, they didn't saute. Perhaps that clear distinction was why he was still able to draw humor from it. "Damn, girl." he started, plunking the full mug of coffee on the counter in front of Andromeda. "Yahtzee!"

Strangely, James's brain took him back to his childhood years, watching the Swedish Chef on TV yorp and smorgen his way through meal preparation, somehow this time with a cleaver and a corpulent human leg. Completely unbidden. He allowed himself a dismissive grin as he filled his own cup, then turned his back to the counter and leaned against it. One sip, two sips down, and he listened to the ideas and input of his fellow Paradoxes, people with whom he had trained for well over a year now. They had to learn to trust and rely upon one another. Now was as good as any time for that. "A'ight..." he said, pausing just long enough to to take another sip from his cup. "Here's what I think: I'm thinkin' we need to play this straight an' honest. Miss Sophia here's our best source of info on these folks, and we all (them an' us) got some kinda power or another, right? How do we know they ain't listenin' in too? On invisible an' in this room right now? Or lookin' in some goddamn crystal ball, takin' down notes? I'm sayin' we keep honest, even if that means we tell them we don't wanna talk about most stuff." He nodded, "In case they know anyways." James's eye caught something left out on the counter near him, causing him to immediately perk up his spirits with an exclamation of, "Ooh, Raisin bread! Hot damn!"

Through a hastily acquired mouthful of the former-grape enhanced baked good and a wag of his thumb back to Andromeda, he continued, "Andy's right, right? Gil gotta approve what we doin', 'fore we do it. Least he gotta know. But we need to know more 'bout these people first, like them muthafuckas," he pointed toward the window in the general direction of the carnival, "...know 'bout us somehow." He had a thought, "It's like, umm... We all the Avengers an' the X-Men, okay? (Dibs on Wolverine, just sayin'.) We can do stuff, they can do stuff, but it ain't always gonna be right. Or nice. Maybe they even gotta do somethin' that don't make sense to us. Difference is, we don't know if'n they're the good guys, and they sure as hell ain't talkin'. But they guests here. They need to start talkin'. Fore I go all Piggy Badass upside they asses. With me?"

"An' the first damn thang needs to be a point blank question why they interested in Peter's grave. I didn't know the man, not a stitch, but he was one of what we are, right? That's the kinda question needs askin', 'cause it sounds like it might could be damn disrespectful." His mind experiencing the occasional sporadic moment, James spotted the toaster, and the fresh butter next to it. Putting two an two together with the raisin bread, he hastily added to his extended commentary, "In like, five minutes. Seven tops."

Alexandra Andonova

Don't judge a book by its cover.
- George Eliot

Location: Ville au Camp (The Grounds) - Oak Tree ⇢ Kitchen House
Skills: N/A

"As will I," she muttered under her breath, as she made her way towards the Kitchen House. It wasn't what he had said but what he wasn't saying that stuck with her. She knew that she couldn't trust him. She wanted to, but she couldn't. From the bits of conversations she had been privy to, she was given the distinct impression that these carnival folks knew more about Ville au Camp, Paradoxes, and Emendators than any of them even knew about these carnies. The odds were not in there favor at the moment, but she hoped that that would soon change.

She took a glance back over her shoulder and ended up stopping in her tracks when she saw that Ben wasn't even heading in the direction of Peter's Grave. Her gaze trailed after him, until she realized where he was going. "Дерьмо," she cursed, hustling to catch up with Bart. "Манипулятивный сукин сын." She had thought that she had been playing him there in the end, but it would appear that she was the one being played. They were all being played no doubt, and it all seemed to go back to Management.

Alexandra finally made it to the Kitchen House about the time that James was making his speech. She glanced around at the others but stuck to the fringes. She felt like she was better off as a loner when it came to this group really. Was she a Paradox? Technically, yes. But she didn't feel like it at the moment, not while her past transgressions were fresh on everyone's minds. She supposed she couldn't really blame them, but it still stung nonetheless. She brushed the topic aside in her mind and focused on the more pertinent issue at hand.

She crossed her arms over her chest, leaning against the wall while she listened to what James had to say. He seemed to be on a similar train of thought, and they appeared to have already gathered intel of their own. "Management. Things point back to Management. From what I gathered, it doesn't seem like all of them are overly fond of Management, but they report to her nonetheless. Whether that is out of respect or fear, I don't know. All in all, they definitely know more than they are saying," she spoke up once James was done with his spiel. She didn't care if they listened, let alone believed or valued what she had to say. The point was that they were suppose to be a team, so she would try to play her part.

Bart cracked his knuckles, one at a time, as he listened to the rest of them talk out ideas. "Making sure we run anything we come up with by Gil is a good idea." He agreed, but he wasn't quite sure how too deal with their current guests. They could be allies or enemies, and they didn't know which. To him, this meant they couldn't do anything to risk terribly offending them, but at the same time, they required supervision, and the paradoxes had to make sure to limit the access to information these people had. It seemed like Sophia had monitoring down pat with her ability, but he was concerned with Alexandra's readiness to share the location of Peter's grave with them. Now wasn't the time to play the blame game though, they had to move forward.

Bart nodded at James's idea, a direct approach would cut any bullshit, "Meanwhile, Sophia should keep a bead on them with her superhearing, can you hear all the way out to Peter's grave from here?" He checked. As far as he knew, they had no idea Sophia was capable of this, so maintaining this surveillance would hopefully give them key insight into their goals. He looked up at the ceiling to think, trying to come up with anything else actionable. "In case they don't appreciate our directness," He said slowly, "or this otherwise goes sour, when we ask them, a few of us might want to remain hidden and nearby, to maintain advantage should this come to blows." He didn't like having to think like that, but a Ferris Wheel was nearly dropped on them not five minutes ago, and that being a coincidence was not likely in his eyes.

Andromeda Aldrich

Location: Ville au Camp - Kitchen House

Andromeda instantly paled slightly - which was impressive, given how pale she already was. The strangers were interested in Peter's grave? It instantly set off alarm bells. With every ability she had heard of so far and her previous life, she was willing to bet that necromancy could be a thing. However, it was troubling to her that they knew of the existence of the grave in the first place. He had died in Ville Au Campe on a day that technically hadn't even happened due to the loop. And as far as records went, he had died somewhere and some when else when. The anxiety just that revelation gave her felt like ants crawling all over her skin. "No, that's not our first question," Andromeda told James.

"It shouldn't be why they're interested in Peter's grave - it should be how they even know it exists," she pointed out. Management was concerning as well, but at least that much she could think of some logical explanations for. "We live in a time loop. Peter died ages ago - but it's still on this day. So how on earth would they know about his grave?" she pointed out. "I think once we figure out how they know about it...we'll understand them a lot better. Management sounds like an Evelina type figure to me." She then took a sip of the coffee James made for her and gave him a slight smile of thanks.

October 31st, 1943 - Trying To Pull It Together

The Carnivale folks were milling about doing their work. With the collapse of the Ferris Wheel there was more work than ever to do. They needed to get all that mess cleaned up and salvage what they could. There were many tents to get up, for both the acts and such as well as living quarters for the night for those that didn't have their own private trailers. Which to be honest was most of them. There were even some who were dropping their things next to trucks and making it look as if they would sleep under the vehicles if necessary. It wasn't an uncommon practice for a traveling show of little means, especially if the nut was small. Right then, things looked tight. An open tent was set up on the furthest end away from things as possible and a small kitchen was set up. There wasn't much to go around but hey things didn't seem to bother those that were there.

"Naw, think this will be like Jericho," Jonesy said to Libby as he walked out of a small tent, holding open the flap for the woman as she climbed out behind him. Wrapping an arm around her he walked slowly towards the remains of the Ferris wheel. Libby leaning against him slightly as they walked.

"Are we even doing this tonight?" she asked as she looked at the rousties breaking things apart and then glancing up at Jonesy with a worried expression on her face.

"I don't know. Guess we'll wait to hear from Management about it. Things don't look good and I gotta find out who used wooden plugs instead of steel in he first place," he said as he spit on the ground and then adjusted his cap.

"We never did last time," Libby said as she shielded the sun from her eyes.

"We didn't have her last time," Jonesy said an grinned a bit before he started walking away and headed towards Management's trailer.

"See you at dinner?" she called out and Jonesy nodded before reaching the door to the trailer and knocking on it. Libby sighed and headed towards the tent with the sign The Cooch on it. As she entered it, the door to Managements trailer opened and JOnsey stepped inside.

Faith Masters

Location: Kitchen House
Skills: N/A

Faith listened. ACTUALLY listened when the others spoke. They all, for the most part, had solid, sensible ideas and leads into the carnival's mysterious appearance. What struck Faith the most was their attention on Peter's grave. Andromeda was right, how did they know about it? If Eve invited them, did she mention it? Why would she? There was clearly more to them than met the eye. Especially Management. They gave Faith a weird feeling.

"Of course we would ask Gil first, but we also have to come to terms that we are, more or less, on our own at the moment. Even with Gil here to look over things, he can't be everywhere at once. So we need to take things into our own hands. I agree with everyone's ideas. Should we split up? Cover more ground? I'm curious why they want Peter's grave so badly, but it is true we should not let them know we are curious."

"If worse comes to worse, use our abilities. There's something weird going on and I'm not standing around letting it continue."

Sophia listened to James for a moment and nodded towards him, he had a good idea being straight forward could work, but also it could be a bad thing. But right now they were currently on their own, they needed Gilbert as soon as possible to find out what they all should do right now. "You could be the black version of Wolverine." Sophia said looking towards James smirking a bit, as she leaned back in the chair, and ran a hand through her hair. Alexandra finally came in, looking over towards her things did seem to go through this Management person, whoever the albino woman was. "Yeah it seems like everything goes through her it seems." Sophia agreed, as she put her prosthetic back on as she thought for a moment.

"As far as scope of my senses, I can hear all around the grounds, sometimes less sometimes more, but i'd rather not push my ability to much i'd rather not find out what happens if I over use it. But I can tune in from time to time, see whats up and tell you guys whatever I can hear." Sophia said, remembering their first days that they shouldn't rely to much on their abilities to much could overload them, she certainly didn't want to go deaf or anything. Sophia listened to Andromeda and Faith as well, she wanted to know how they found out about Peter's grave as well.

"I say we find out where Gil is, find out what he wants us to do, and then split up and find out whats going on with these people and work from there." Sophia said, she certainly didn't trust these people at least not yet, they were really suspicious. "Maybe if Gil allows us, we could look into Evelina's room see if she did invite these people over or not?" Sophia asked.

James Grady

Location: Ville au Camp (Kitchen House)
Skills: N/A

"Mmm hmm, mmm hmm..." sounded James in agreement. And he did agree with most of what his group was saying. Most. Still, unity was important and they were brainstorming at that moment, not getting together a hard and fast plan, if indeed a plan was called for. And thinking about it, he didn't really have to agree with the plan to be a part of it. Maybe it was the horrifically mind and body altering training that he had gone through over the past ...God, how long was it now? Well, it didn't matter. Maybe the stresses of training had refocused him into a loyal, team player, complete with the tribal affiliation of a Paradox.

Fine, he was one of the group. Go team, go. Everyone coming together in unison to address the potential threat of whatever the carnival really was when the grease paint and fried dough went away, exposing the stark weirdness of it all. And everyone was contributing to this little talk, even if all it amounted to was a group of kindergarteners plotting to spy on the adults in the next room, if indeed these carny folk were like the Emendators in age as well as ability.

Then Bart spoke. James's nodding and affirmative grunts were replaced with an eyebrow arch that began to tilt his head backwards, regarding the guy. "Umm, hey there, Mr. Bart, sir... If'n I might make a observation? Now, we ain't knowin' how these folks know so damn much, and if I'm even a little right 'bout them having access to that 'Voodoo Surveillance' like I'm thinkin' they might, then plannin' out loud on hidin' folks sounds like the plan what gets us dead. Well, dead-er, anyways. Ain't in that kinda hurry today." James shrugged in Bart's direction, assuming a look on his face that was probably apologetic. They were talking, it was a good thing. This kind of back and forth was necessary.

Aware that the situation might have been made a hair uncomfortable, James did his best impression of an innocent bystander and leaned against the countertop once again. A mechanical clack sounded next to him, causing him to stand up straight and whip his head around - it was the toaster. A commonplace kitchen appliance just made him flinch. "...damn toast..." he mumbled, embarrassed at being startled in the middle of a tense conversation by his own breakfast. Feeling quite foolish, he crammed a whole piece of raisin toast into his mouth, just in time to hear Andromeda make a statement that, to his ears, made a lot more sense than what he was spouting earlier.

With a mouth still full of lightly browned goodness, James could not speak with anything resembling manners. Instead, he opted for another, albeit lesser breach of conversational etiquette, snapping his fingers to get Andromeda's attention followed by a vigorous, affirming nod and shake of his finger toward the woman. As soon as he fought the raisin toast down his throat, he commented, "Yuh huh, yeah. Girl's right. Exactly what she said. We got too many unknown unknowns here, an' they got way too many unknown knowns on us. First one bein' how they know in the first 'bout that guy Peter. I don't think they, you know, evil or nothin', but this some creepy shit I ain't comfortable with." But what to do? Indeed, that was the question. The mere presence of these people was enough to bring about paranoia. If that was the goal, James might surmise that it was beginning to work.

Gilbert Summers, "The Hat"

Location: Ville au Camp (Main House, His Quarters: Room 203 -> Kitchen House)
Skills: N/A

One step. Then another. Then yet another. Yes, his brain was pounding inside of his skull, but it was beginning to relent. Each movement that the powerful Emendator made, each stride that he took toward the Paradoxes under his care, emboldened him and seemed to allow him to beat back the previously incapacitating pain that still tried to consume him. Having experienced a myriad of odd and wondrous things over the course of millennia, and over many different timelines containing things both hellish and miraculous, Gilbert wondered in that moment if what he was feeling now was akin to clawing your way back from the dead. The Paradoxes he had known throughout the eons had described their rebirth a little differently, each one, but usually it didn't involve wanting to claw their eyes out to get some relief. Again, luckily, it was subsiding.

Still, when he finally appeared in the doorway to the Kitchen House, he looked like crap. As much like crap as Gilbert could legitimately get, anyway. Let's face it, if he were run over by a garbage truck twice and came back as a drooling zombie, the man could still find a respectable last-minute date to a bull nutting.

Despite looking haggard, Gil spoke with clear, solid syllables. "I have caught much of your conversation. Those are all very good ideas." He stepped fully into the Kitchen House and looked at everyone gathered. "At least, it is good that everyone has their own ideas about this. It is even better that you are sharing them. And better still that you have decided to wait for me to confirm before doing something rash. It shows me that you have learned from us, and from each other, over the past year or so. I am proud of you."

He ambled over to the icebox and pulled out a plate of shaved ham. With it was a white, sliced cheese and a bottle of milk. "Sorry, the bread did not do it for me earlier." Foregoing bread, Gilbert rolled up a slice of one of each into a charcuterie cigar and bit it in half. "But first, James - I do not care if they can hear us. We are the ones trying to be hospitable. They are the ones here because they dropped Evelina's name, yet refuse to answer questions until nightfall. If they wish to wait until then, I have no problem with it. The complaint I have involves making unreciprocated inquiries and attempting to locate the body of one of my Paradoxes for their own agenda." Admittedly, that last part was rather news to him, gleaned from the tail end of the conversation just then. "Especially without coming to me first, nor explaining their reasons. It is very rude. So no, James. I do not care if they can hear us. There is an entitled lack of respect that must be addressed."

Gil finished off his snack and rolled together another one, much bigger this time. While eating, he continued, "More bad news. Giosue, The Watch? He left me a note. Handwritten note, telling me that he was going to be gone for the meantime. The way he phrased it made me believe that he will be gone for some time. His first piece of business involves going to visit Golgotha and Miss Babylon, meaning that - Andromeda - our trip is cancelled for now. So for the indeterminate future, I am the only Emendator on the grounds. This means some things will change. Understand that it is for your overall benefit."

Another bit of meat and cheese down, Gilbert cracked open the bottle of milk and poured himself a glass. "Oh, help yourself if you haven't eaten already. Just be quick." He pointed to the foodstuffs he had just taken out. Nothing fancy, but he didn't have the time for a huge cooking session. "Now, some good news, such as it is. I have looked into the history of this carnival. Much of it is darkened to me. What that means I could not say. But most of these people are just people, who have come to accept what the others can do and stand with them. I can see their histories in the carnival plainly. The ones who are fuzzy or shrouded to me are the ones I believe have abilities comparable to yours. Understand that I might be wrong, this is mostly educated guesswork."

Finishing off his glass, he rinsed it in the sink and stated flatly, "You should speak with some of these people. They might be as confused as we all are. I will let the entity pulling the strings know my feelings about Peter, if she does not already know. The rest of you, mingle. Talk. Do not threaten and keep your end of conversations in the present. Pair off or keep within sight of one another. Extend hospitality and show assertive courtesy. We will get solid answers by nightfall, if nothing else. If you have questions, ask them now. Otherwise, we begin."

Andromeda Aldrich

Location: Ville au Camp - Kitchen House
Skills: N/A

Hearing that the Watch was going to be gone for a while brought up some logistical questions for Andromeda. If Giouse was gone, would no one else be able to get to the Loop? She knew that Nancy had gone off somewhere - would she be able to return? Would Evelina be able to? She frowned slightly, already having a million and one questions about the mechanics of time manipulation - a cosmic irony, no doubt, given her death. Time manipulation at a carnival - as much as she wanted to escape her past, it kept on coming back to smack her in the face.

She agreed with James - hiding on their own turf? That didn't sound right to her. "James is right - we shouldn't hide. Even beyond just the paranoia, it'd be like ceding control over our own turf...We can't go on the defensive in our own home," Andromeda reasoned. She knew a lot of the Paradoxes had spent ages going into battle situations. She was relying on gut feeling and intuition. Hiding in Ville au Camp to sneak up on the carnival folk? It almost reminded her of the opening of the Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe - with the game of hide and seek and running away from the housekeeper.

She was glad James supported her line of questioning and was about to say something else when Gil hobbled into the kitchen. She wasn't certain how to feel when Gil said that he was proud of them - but it did stir something slightly in her - as if an uncle had come and said good job when you handled the house and the parents were out. Andromeda nodded in recognition as she was told her trip with Gil was canceled - it was unsurprising. Evelina, Nancy, and Gio were all gone - not all of the Emendators could just leave, right?

She took another sip of the coffee James had given her. When Gil stopped for questions, Andromeda couldn't quite help herself. "Are you alright?" she asked him, concerned for the Emendator's wellbeing. She didn't say it, but he looked terrible.

Alexandra Andonova

When you meet someone for the first time,
that's not the whole book. That's just the first page.
- Brody Armstrong

Location: Ville au Camp - Kitchen House

Alexandra's gaze flitted from person to person as ideas, points, questions, and the like were thrown out. A lot of attention seemed to be spent on the how's and why's revolving around the carnies' interest in Peter's grave. While it was concerning, she felt that they needed to broaden their scope slightly. How did they know about any of this? About the existence of Ville au Camp, of Emendators, and of Paradoxes? Her brows crinkled together a bit as she recalled some of things she had heard in passing.

"Ben said that he was something akin to Gilbert, not quite the same but close. He never used the terminology that ve use, instead referring to us as cousins and Gilbert as a brother," she piped up, raising her voice slightly to be heard over the others. The gears continued to turn in her head, and her eyes glazed over as things seemed to start to click into place in her mind. By the time Gilbert had entered the Kitchen House and had finished his long, drawn out speech, she was about ready to pounce on him, figuratively speaking of course.

"Is it possible that there are more Emendators out there? And if there are, and they have the same abilities to look into history as you do, that vould explain how they know about Peter," she blurted out to Gilbert the very moment he stopped talking.
