Five years ago, the Alvadian Empire toppled. For all their might, their powerful weapons, the madness and arrogance of Emperor Xander Eraphus Alvadius was ultimately their undoing. Their war of conquest finally ended when defectors from the Alvadian military joined with Embria’s forces and mounted an assault that pierced the Alvadian capital and assassinated the Emperor. The Alvadian war machine collapsed, and those who had defected soon became the new leaders of the reformed Republic of Alvad.

A treaty, to make for a brighter and less violent future, as formed between Alvad, Embria, and the empire’s former conquests. It was seen as a symbol of the willingness to work for peace, to secure a world in which such a devastating war could never again take place.

However, the ashes of warfare do not fade so easily.

Five years since the end of the war, and tensions remain between Alvad and Embria. There are those in Embria who believe that Alvad was not punished thoroughly enough for their attempted subjugation, and those in Alvad who believe that gave up far too much in the aftermath of the war. A strong sympathy for the fallen empire still lingers in some of Alvad’s people, and although the current Minister of the Republic of Alvad has attempted to dissuade such sentiments only time will tell if her measures will be a success.

The scars of war were rent deep into the surface of Theia. Swathes of land were radically altered by the fighting, and by the reckless use of devastating war machines. Former research installations, wartime technology, magical experiments, and monstrous creatures created for war roam these locations. The results of such a devastating conflict, they have been collectively named Ashes, as they are indeed the ashes left behind after a war.

And it is because of these ashes that mercenary organizations have flourished in the wake of the war. Travelling into locations scarred by battle to recover technology and magical experiments, eliminate monsters, escort researchers, defend lumo crystal mining operations, or disable militant groups seeking to spark conflict, all these purposes have given mercenaries a lucrative career in the aftermath of the Alvadian Empire’s attempted conquests. Additionally, the escorting of diplomats in politically sensitive situations, or operating less then legally in territories that have been strictly demilitarized… Mercenaries have extensive job opportunities in the post-war world.

Many mercenary companies were formed by former soldiers, who had spent so much of their lives fighting that they struggled to do anything else.

Among these mercenary organizations is Wild Rose. It is not the largest organization, not does it have the most skilled mercenaries out of all of them. But, operating from the edge of Embrian territory, they are highly willing to travel all across the wartorn regions to locate valuable technology and exterminate monsters or militant groups.

And it just so happens that they have been hired for a rather interesting new job, putting some of their newly-acquired soldiers of fortune to the test…

The World of Theia is still recovering from the devastating conquest attempted by the fallen Alvadian Empire. Eight years later, the scars left behind remain fresh. And yet, in other ways, the world flourishes.
  • Alvad: The former Alvadian Empire, a country to the west. Known for a highly militarized culture and an emphasis placed on honor, it was for these reasons that it became easy for the Emperor to incite his people to war. Possessing powerful magitech, the Alvadian War Machine seemed unstoppable for many years. During this time, they performed numerous highly secretive experiments to bolster their power even further. Towards the end of the war, however, a large division of the Alvadian Armed Forces defected and assisted Embria, leading to the fall of the Empire. Today, it has reorganized as the Republic of Alvad, but tensions still remain.
  • Embria: A country to the east. One of the last to be able to resist the Alvadian war machine, it was never conquered by the Empire. But it faced many devastating attacks during the war, and the scars have yet to heal. Known for its excellent airships and pilots, Embria has made strides to reconnect the world after the war. But in spite of the treaty signed with Alvad, many citizens of Embria still feel as if the former Empire has not been punished enough.
  • Lumo Crystals: A natural substance occurring as large, colorful crystals growing beneath the surface of Theia, though in some places they are large enough to be visible aboveground. In spite of being mineral in composition, they grow much like plants. For this purpose, places where Lumo crystals occur are known as Gardens. Lumo Crystals are a potent source of magic, the larger the crystal the more powerful, and thus they are mined for the purpose of creating Lumium. The largest and most expansive gardens are safeguarded by ethereal, child-like female spirits that possess potent magical capabilities of their own. Making deals with them to allow for safe mining is part of the lumo crystal mining business. Some in the business would vey much like to bypass this process.
  • Lumium: A type of fuel created by liquifying Lumo crystals. Utilized to power many forms of magitech, lumium use is incredibly widespread, which in turn sustains a large lumo crystal mining industry. Lumium is even a compotent of ethers, allowing an individual to recharge their magical energy by drinking a diluted solution of the liquified crystal.
  • Spirits: A variety of entities possessing great magical power. Some are Servants of the gods, other may even be gods themselves. Most possess capabilities far behind even the most potent human practitioner of magic, and thus were of special interest to Alvadian scientists during the war. Traditionally contracted by summoners, it is said that Alvadian scientists performed numerous experiments in an attempt to bypass this process completely. It is likely that some monsters roaming the world today are a product of these experiments.
  • Ashes: A collective term for that which has been left behind by the war. Wartime technology, genetically engineered monsters, magical experiments, all these and more are defined as Ashes. Due to the dangers they pose, or their value, Ashes are often a target of mercenary activity.

So just a couple things:

I’d like to have no more then six players in the RP. Any more will be difficult to handle as a single party.

I will be enforcing a weekly posting schedule. If you cannot post one week, please inform me and I can give an extension of up to an additional week. Otherwise, posts at least once a week are preferred.

Naturally, I don’t want anyone starting out with anything too intense for the early game of the RP. No -aga level spells, for example. The setting is fairly modern, so feel free to utilize a variety of magitech, guns, and other unusual weaponry if you so choose.

@VitaVitaAR Okay, quick question (two questions, really, but kind of the same): What's the difference between "skills" and abilities", and which one would spells go under?

@Sedjwick: For the purposes of this RP, skills are things like, say, cooking, tracking, that sort of thing. Mundane learnable things. Spells would go under abilities.

Hey, just a quick update to say I decided to lower the amount of time since the war after considering some of the stuff I plan to do. I don't think it'll have too significant effect on everyone's characters, just thought I'd let everyone know!

Whatever works, as long as we keep everything in one place, so we don’t have to jump between this OC and the Discord.

I'll still use the OOC for pending signups and acceptances, but otherwise discussion will take place in the discord.

  • Name: Eurie
  • Age: 13
  • Gender: Female
  • Appearance: "I can do it fine by myself." A slender, small, frail-looking girl in her early teens.
  • Personality: An isolated girl whose personal skills are somewhat lacking. Eurie's mentality is one that strives for independence in spite of her physical failings. In spite of being socially awkward, she is also temperamental and guarded, and quick to criticize or grow impatient regardless of the situation. Rather than being shy, she is better described as being prickly. She is confident in her ability to protect herself, and yet grows frustrated when her poor health gets in the way of taking action. An easily-angered girl, to say the least. Despite her prickly personality, Eurie is not without soft points. In particular, she is very protective of other children, especially those younger than herself. She is also highly fond of sweets, and loves small animals. She does not deal with anything with more then four limbs very well, and is especially bad with anything with more then six. While she is not without her softer side, Eurie is especially harsh towards anyone who was ever tied to the Alvad military, and is wary of anyone from the former empire.
  • Brief Backstory: Eurie is a wanderer, appearing at times in Embrian towns on the edge of the most war-torn locations between Embria and Alvad. She is extremely cagey about her past, though if prompted she may mention her entire village was forced to move by the Alvadian military. Beyond these details, she is highly unlikely to say anything else.
  • Skills: Eurie has some basic survival skills, primarily in her ability to render food edible or prepare premade rations. This is not to say that she has any capacity to make food good, just that it will be edible. Probably.
  • Abilities: In spite of her young age, Eurie is remarkably potent in the use of magic. Perhaps to a surprising degree, though she still seemingly lacks any sufficient knowledge of spells beyond Fire, Blizzard, and Thunder to be able to cast them freely. Still, her capacity to use magic before requiring rest is considerable, which is perhaps lucky given her physical frailty. In spite of her high magical power and excellent compatibility with lumium, she suffers from poor health. As a result, if too much strain is placed on her she is liable to suffer the consequences, passing out or becoming ill. Regardless, her potency as user of magic cannot be ignored and in a combat scenario it is ideal for her to be providing ranged offense. Her compatibility with spells that are not directly related to offense is very low.
    • Limit Break - Megaflare: A spell normally inaccessible to humanity, magic in the territory of a certain divine spirit. In spite of her seeming novice magical knowledge, Eurie channels an enormous amount of magical energy and releases a beam of white-hot flame, tearing through even solid steel in a single blast. An attack of last resort that places significant strain on Eurie's body, as even the use of ethers cannot recover the toll it takes on her already weak constitution and she is forced to rest in order to recover.
  • Equipment: A lumium-infused staff, a typical basic piece of equipment for those who purely use magic as a means to attack. Though she's unlikely to ask unless prompted, she'd like something a little more impressive.

I considered my options and decided playing a party member myself would be the best way to implement certain plot elements.

  • Name: Cassidy Eno-Royal “Caseno Royal”
  • Age: 36
  • Gender: Male
  • Appearance:
  • Personality: Cassidy is the definition of charismatic, with a quick and sly tongue, he is able to talk his way out of any trouble, and into any bed. Cassidy’s smooth-talk allows him to say all the right things at the right time, to benefit his own needs. This makes Cassidy a force to be reckoned with in any battle of the minds, which is part of what makes Cassidy such a natural success at the card table. Hustling, antagonizing, and persuading his victims out of their Gil with little effort. Cassidy has also been known to use these natural abilities to woo the ladies from time to time. Though he never keeps them around for long, as Gil and gambling are his only loves.
  • Brief Backstory: Cassidy Eno-Royal, “Caseno Royal” as he was known in the Alvadian underground gambling circuit. Cassidy is a sly, charming, smooth-talker, who’s as quick on his feet as he is quick with his tongue. Known as “Caseno Royal” in the gambling circuit of the old Alvadian Empire, not many who knew his name were ignorant enough to sit across from him at a card table. Making a name and a living for himself gambling, smooth-talking, and charming his way around underground Alvad, Caseno Royal lived his life the way he wanted. All of that would change with the end of the war, which caused the less than desirable crowd to find work elsewhere; hurting Caseno Royal’s take from the gambling circuit. With less work to be found on the card tables, Cassidy had to set out for work elsewhere as well. With Cassidy’s charisma, smooth-talking, and his experience with surviving in the ruthless underground gambling streets, the Mercenary group “Wild Rose” seemed like a good place to start..
  • Skills: Cassidy has the gift of gab; a quick witted response is something to expect from the sly tongue of “Caseno Royal” if you challenge his charisma to a match of wits.
Cassidy is what you would call a Card Shark; Someone who uses skill and/or deception to win at poker, and other card games. Call this a blessing and a curse, as Cassidy has found himself in more compromising situations than the amount of Gil he’s swindled from the ignorant. Thanks to those compromising situations, Cassidy learned through experience to be very proficient with a Bo Staff that he keeps for protection. What was once a self-defense tool, is not Cassidy’s weapon of choice in CQC; only outmatched by his luck of the draw at cards.
  • Abilities: Spells cast by focusing Lumium through Cassidy’s deck of cards: Club - Aero, Spade - Thunder, Diamond - Blizzard, Heart - Fire.
  • Equipment: A Deck of Lumium enhanced Playing Cards, Bo Staff.

@thecatinaction: To begin with, I think you need to describe his personality with some more detail. While you don't even need to go as far as I did, a short paragraph is preferred at least.

The same for his skills.

I realized the personality was very short. The brief description started as his personality, but turned into the description. So I have to hit it again.
