Marrie Knight

I'm saving you whether you want it or not, damnit! Marrie thought as Pac fell out of her chain. She used the last bit of flight given to her by her note to drop down at an angle in an attempt to avoid the starship and it's attack. As she fell, and her skin began itching, she used her backup. The bracelet she had been given worked its magic to heal herself up again. She had to conserve mana at this point, she knew. She hit the ground and rolled before bursting into a sprint towards Pac-a-fist. She was not going to give up, and Pac had to be running low on mana too. A quick glance at Justin made it clear that they were in the second phase of the boss fight, and the damnable Diver was still making things worse. What was the next one again?

Oh. Oh shit.

Justin was damaged, but of course, not yet dead. He whirled on her, and she suddenly couldn’t move. So, that’s what his trick was. Even though he made for a gory image, he was clearly still functioning perfectly fine. He could probably heal somehow or other if given time enough. He had to be finished off now, somehow. All she could do was cast a melody. That’d have to be enough. The very moment she realized what he intended to do – felt the blood rain under his control herding her closer to him, saw his arm raise and grow claws – her decision was made. She channeled magic throughout her body. An attack he shouldn’t be able to see coming until it was too late.

It didn’t even matter when her skin broke out in boils. She strained under the pain, but was unable to move. Inevitably, her eyes teared. It was painful, and it would get even more so. But her melody was primed and ready to go. As soon as the vampire grasped her, he’d be in for a surprise.

Desperate times call for desperate measures.

The situation was just like two weeks ago. Finn had his back to a wall with Betty’s weapon closing in.

Marrie was doing something totally new. She was being chased through the sky by Pac-A-Fist, which was a first for the esper. As was dodging the projectiles of an incoming starship.

The rest of Gemini was dealing with another vampire. Something new and old. This wasn’t any ordinary blood sucker. This was the blood sucker. Arzendale was a trickster, but Justin was a brute; a force of nature. His attacks were simple and obvious, but were dangerous by virtue of his sheer power.

And the Holy Diver hung in the distance, hovering away from the conflict. The prophet swung its cross around, unaffected by the chaos. If anything it reveled in the misery of others.

And one more remained concealed.

The chase was about to end. With Finn surrounded by foes on all sides, his only option was to spend the mana he had been saving. It wouldn’t matter how much he had if he was killed before he could use it. He detonated a time spell that sped himself up and damaged everything around him. The flies were fried instantly. Their monstrous bodies were too big to blow apart, but their smoldering carcases were blown to the wayside. Betty was not a monster though. She was an esper with a protective melody up, and the spell wouldn’t do her much harm.

Normally.

The lightning washed over her body. Every boil on her skin popped and oozed with yellow pus. It looked like her skin was melting, and her screams helped sell that illusion. This was the first time Betty sounded like she was suffering rather than raging out of her mind. Her eyes closed, but she finished the swing anyway. This blind swipe was something Finn could sidestep with ease. There was no hesitation when he ran his sword through Betty’s shoulder. Blinded by pus and pain, Betty’s only recourse was to back up. She swung wildly, but there was nothing to hit. It was during this blind flurry of swings that she left the esper state.

There she stood, mostly human and still wearing her white dress. It looked pristine until it was stained in the falling blood. Her magic was gone, as was her giant sword. But not her will to fight. She pointed at Finn with the bow of her violin.

”I’d like to see you try that again!“

With a howl, she dove for Finn.

The aerial pursuit didn’t last long. Marrie dropped to the streets while Pac remained on her pixel star fighter. The ship behaved like a harrier jet, enabling her to just hover in the air. Trying to engage Pac in close quarters was going to be impossible at this distance.

Though Marrie was correct about one thing. While she didn’t know the size of Pac’s mana pool, she had to be running low. Her melodies were complex and couldn’t have been easy to cast. But that wasn’t going to stop her from casting a massive spell.

She extended her hands over her head. Or at least her wrists, as one of her hands had been blown off earlier. A slew of pixels came together from every direction and combined into a giant yellow boulder. One with a pink bow and a huge mouth. She heaved it into the streets as it chomped its way through the air.

Things were no less frantic around Justin.

With Ashley and Samuel keeping their distance, there wasn’t anything to stop Jacqueline from floating closer to Justin. His faux hand swelled as the space between them closed. Soon his hand was big enough to totally envelop the knight, and Justin didn’t hesitate to do so. But Justin’s target didn’t erupt into a geyser of blood, they detonated like a grenade, throwing shrapnel in all directions.

A centralized explosion was enough to rip the hand to pieces and strike Justin himself. He staggered backwards as metal flakes sunk into his blood vessels and what remained on his body. Once he was done reeling backwards, he corrected his posture. The vampire had been wounded, but still stood.

Jacqueline might have been unphased by her melody, but it opened all the boils on her body. The pus ran out of every seam in her armor. Seeing became even more difficult, which said nothing of the burning sensation all over her body. A single “If foe” note would have protected her from her magic, but she was likely to incur some damage from the hand anyway. They still needed to save mana for the Diver after all, and what was Jacqueline but one who traded anguish with her enemies? But she was momentarily vulnerable, and Justin would seize this opportunity to end her.

Only if Ashley let him. A ball of neon slammed into Justin’s side, stripping his blood vessels bare. His midsection had been blown through, with just the upper half of his head and legs left. Yet his other organs remained intact. Though cracks were starting to show, almost as if they were made out of glass or ice. His heart hovered where his chest cavity used to be, beating without anything holding it in place. A small blood barrier came up just before the second shot could land, but this required Justin’s attention. Once he looked away from Jacqueline, the ability to move returned to her. But by this point the Vampire was speeding towards his next target.

Ashley.

It had been raining for a good while, and eviscerating Justin’s flesh released more blood than a normal human would have. This allowed Justin to fortify himself as he ran. A giant V-plow was erected in front of himself. Not only that, but he let the blood rush out of his dismembered arms and made two rigid nets that formed behind his back. He swung his arms forward, using the nets as giant fly swatters. If Ashley didn’t move soon, she might get flattened by Justin’s next attack.

Only, she couldn’t move.

Justin was looking right at her through a hole in his frontmost shield.

And also…

This is what the Lord, the God of the Hebrews, says: Let my people go, so that they may worship me, or this time I will send the full force of my plagues against you and against your officials and your people, so you may know that there is no one like me in all the earth. For by now I could have stretched out my hand and struck you and your people with a plague that would have wiped you off the earth. But I have raised you up for this very purpose, that I might show you my power and that my name might be proclaimed in all the earth. You still set yourself against my people and will not let them go. Therefore, at this time tomorrow I will send the worst hailstorm that has ever fallen on Egypt, from the day it was founded till now. Give an order now to bring your livestock and everything you have in the field to a place of shelter, because the hail will fall on every man and animal that has not been brought in and is still out in the field, and they will die.
— Exodus 9:13–

The sound of the rain changed as it turned to pebbles. Every second that went by those pebbles got bigger. One inch, two inches, they grew. It wouldn’t be long before they became big enough to fracture bone. The large flies that remained would not do so for long, as even the smaller hailstones were enough to rupture their vulnerable wings.

The only one who had any real shelter was Marrie, who was close enough to the railings to avoid getting pelted by falling stones. Pac would also be spared if only because she was under the giant blood monster. But everyone else would need to find shelter quick if they wanted to avoid having their skulls caved in.

Save the Holy Diver, who hovered over the roof of a nearby apartment complex with arms extended. They were much too large to be affected by the falling hail, and seemed to rejoice as every window and windshield in Pax Septimus was about to get smashed to bits.

Time was running out for the firstborns.

"WHY DID THAT NOT KILL HIM???"
Current Location: Precinct #11

Casting an AoE and Damage X note would negate it down to a normal Damage note, but casting Speedster on himself would partially make up for the cost. It got rid of the flies. And more importantly, it managed to slip through Betty's defensive melody via the boils like he anticipated. Even Finn couldn't help bit cringe back at the sickening sight. And her screams, goddamnit, those idiots up there better hurry up and kill Justin so he didn't have to hurt her any more. With her blinded by opened wounds, he was able to dodge her attack and drive his weapon into her shoulder. To avoid getting hit again by her flailing, he quickly yanked it back out and kept at a distance.

Then, at the end of the flurry, Betty finally went out of her esper state. The Timekeeper's eyes widened. His heart ached as despite everything, her will to fight remained strong as ever. Her white dress was dyed red by the blood that fell from the heavens as if angels cried.

....Too dramatic? Yeah. This was going on too long for his liking.

Besides, there was a silver lining in this. He didn't have to be lethal towards her any longer. As Betty, in her desperation, dove in like her bow was a makeshift blade, Finn's rapier connected with it and pushed it aside. He pointed a finger gun her direction and fired a restraining melody, a bolt of lightning tying her arms against her sides like rope.

"Game over, B." He finally spoke up to her. "I don't want to fight you-" The boy was interrupted when the seventh spell was in effect, and a pebble of hail struck him on the head, causing him to flinch. Then as more began to pour down, bigger than the last, he quickly picked Betty up and sprinted inside the precinct. He did his best to shield her from the hailstorm, even if it left reasonable dents in his body.

Ashely watched with grim satisfaction as her twin glowing projectiles impacted Justin’s chest, even as Leroux’s own melody burst apart the vampire’s blood-enhanced arm. However, satisfaction rapidly turned to horror as the Knight of Tomorrow saw that her foe’s heart was still intact, suspended in the gaping hole where the vampire’s torso had been and protected by a hastily erected blood barrier. But while her attack may have failed to end the vampire’s unholy life, it had succeeded in getting his attention…

Turning his pitch black eye sockets upon her, Justin advanced, a wedge of blood forming before him, while twin nets of crimson amassed at his sides, primed to sandwich the high-tech heroine in a world of pain. Well, even greater pain than she was already experiencing…

Ashely’s agony was nearly unbearable.

Acid ate into her flesh, boils erupted across her skin, and now chunks of hail were beginning to pummel her already battered body. Every nerve ending screamed at her to seek cover from the savage onslaught and healing from its ravages.

Yet Ashley could not move.

An enraged vampire lord was baring down upon her with more than enough strength to end her feeble life. Every self preservation instinct in her brain screamed at her to flee before such an unstoppable and inevitably fatal assault.

Yet Ashley could not move.

The vile monster who had so flippantly taken the life of her teammate, her friend, stood before her. Her soul screamed for her to crush his disgusting heart in her bare hands.

Yet Ashley still could not move.

Transfixed by the vampire’s baleful gaze, Ashley could neither flee from her opponent, nor charge to meet him. But that did not mean she could not fight him…

Though frozen in place, her arm was still extended, her techno-wand still aimed at the small slit in the crimson barrier through which Justin continued to violate her with his blasphemous vision.

Perhaps she should have tried to protect herself with a defensive melody, but then, that would, at best, only stop the first attack, would merely delay the inevitable. The vampire’s attack would never come if he ceased to exist, and Ashley’s hatred would allow no other course of action to be taken.

Die, damn you… she commanded, while firing two quick shots, just as before, but this time, directly between what passed for the abomination’s eyes…

Just. Fucking. DIE!!!

Marrie Knight

Ultimately, Marrie really only cared about two people surviving this. And one person not surviving. Though even that was something that could be put to the wayside. And so she did the only thing she could. She jumped up and grabbed the safety bars on the balcony above her, hoisted herself up to the next level up (haha pac-a-fist pun) and sidled up to the wall to keep cover from the balcony above. Then she shot two quick melodies.

Blip Blip.

Then she turned her attention towards the Diver. "Oi, fuckhead!" she began, "Commandments, version one! 'Thou shalt have no other gods before me'! 'Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image'! 'Thou shalt not take the Lord's name in vain'! 'Thou shalt not murder'! and lastly, motherfucker, set two. 'All that open the womb are mine'! You want to really be an agent of god!? Then stop stealing his shit!" Or his shtick, for that matter...

Jacqueline Leroux

The vampire's hand exploded. So did the boils on Jacqueline’s body. This had been expected. However, just because it was, did by no means make it any easier to deal with. A lesson that kept getting repeated with each any every plague (that she managed to remember ahead of time, that was), but could hardly do anything about.

Every inch of her body radiated pain. This, on top of everything else that’d happened to her, was degrees of worse than getting her guts shredded. But if Orion had saved her then by healing her, she’d saved her again by distracting Justin. If her coworker had not, Jacqueline would have been killed then and there, unable to do act in any way to prevent it.

As it was, Justin looked away, and she fell a few feet to the floor with a grunt. Her backup had done what it could by now, so though her leg was functional, her new injuries would remain. But it was better than nothing.

Mind hazy with pain, she struggled and strained until she picked herself up. First into a crouch, and she watched blearily as Orion faced against Justin. The vampire had left her for dead…or had thought her out of the fight – if he’d had any thoughts about a human he’d nearly squished to death at all. And maybe he was right, because Jacqueline didn’t know if she’d manage to get to him quick enough to contribute anything further to his demise.

But she tried. She stood up, and staggered closer. Even though she pushed and pushed herself, if anything, it felt like getting dragged excruciatingly slow through time and space.

But then, she was behind Justin. Havoc in her hands. She swung, pick aimed at his heart.

"I just wanted to make super sure."

— Sam

Samuel got maybe two steps into his sprint before a sudden compulsion prevented him from moving another inch. He willed his body to struggle against it but his attempts were in vain, much to his consternation. Things really weren't looking great.

That really is a merciless ability...

Then, just as suddenly as it had came, it went. Justin's ability was no longer affecting him, providing the opportunity to escape. Samuel took the chance without a word, not even sparing a glance back to see what had caused Justin pause, barely managing to survive.

But he wasn't out of trouble just yet.

It wasn't until he suddenly felt a pull from behind and a sharp pain around his neck that he understood his scarf had been caught. Worse was that it wasn't just caught... it was being reeled in towards walls meant to crush him, while the newest plague caused painful boils to form all around his body.

With a shortage of time and scarf, Samuel cast a melody on himself at great cost. The blisters erupted in pain that made it hard to think, but it wasn't like Samuel hadn't literally been set on fire before, so he was able to grit through it and successfully cast his melody.

Now intangible, Samuel pulled away from the wall and made some distance between he and it, running behind the ventilation unit. Now, with a bit of breathing room, he was able to confirm that it was Jacqueline and Ashley who helped him, and that they were now being targeted by the vampire.

He moved around the ventilation unit to get a better view of the battle, as the sound hail falling became louder and louder. They really needed to get inside, but they also really needed to kill Justin before he killed Ashley -- something he Jacqueline clearly noticed as she was trailing right behind him as Justin attempted to run Ashley down.

"He doesn't know when to quit..."

Samuel pointed his sword at Justin, a pitch-black viper constricting the entirety of the hilt up to the tip of the blade. It opened its mouth as energy began to build at the tip of its tongue. Knowing the pain that was going to come with the melody, Samuel grit his teeth and used the last of his hamon mana to fire it.

Some might find Betty’s endless rage endearing, but Finn had enough of it.

Her thrust was easy to deflect. The bow glided over Finn’s blade and missed him completely. They both came up with their off hands to deliver a counter attack. Betty was swinging her violin while Finn’s hand cracked with magic. Tendrils of lightning wrapped around her torso and shoulders, restraining her arms in place.

”Hey! I’m not done yet!“

But Finn had decided that they were. He lifted Betty over his shoulder and ran for shelter. The door to the precinct wasn’t far, and it had already been unlocked. Finn could already hear the people inside running for their lives. Still, it was safer than being out here.

Though Finn wasn’t going to get Betty past the threshold of the door. All because his ears were never blessed by the words of Quintus Ennius, father of Roman poetry.

“The victor is not victorious if the vanquished does not consider himself so.”

Betty drove her knee into Finn’s chest, bursting his boils. Only Finn’s boils were patches of rust filled with water. Or at least they would have been if the Diver’s curse hadn’t turned the water to blood. The clockwork boy bled, and he could feel Betty slide off of his shoulder. She landed on her feet and ran into the apartment complex. Regardless if Finn wanted to pursue or not, there would not be a second chase. The falling hail cut the two off from each other. Betty disappeared under the veil of frozen blood. He could wait for it to pass, or return to the roof to help the others.

Marrie may have tracked down Betty, but she had her own target to worry about. Pac was already shielded by the mass of tendrils over her head, but Marrie decided to play it safe and gave her a shield anyway.

Her next move would be more time consuming however. She had spotted Ashley on her way down to the street, but she was no longer in sight. Ashley was about four to five stories up and no longer visible to Marrie. Climbing the rails wasn’t viable. They were a floor apart, and even a push melody would only get her up a story at a time. Hail and Pac’s incoming pacman projectile would have made a slow climb up the railings impossible to complete. Marrie ran inside so that she could ascend the stairs. If she was quick, she might save herself. She might save Ashley too.

But Ashley didn’t have much time.

Before her was Justin, a one man stampede accompanied by his mighty blood magics. She could see Jacqueline chasing the vampire, but she wasn’t able to catch him. Espers had the athletic ability of olympians, but a vampire veered into superhuman territory. He could jump across a city street without a running start. Staying ahead of Jacqueline was a simple matter.

Viridian energy gathered at the end of Ashley’s wand before flying towards Justin. But all it took was a simple twitch of his head to move the opening in his shield. Her projectile collided with his blood barrier and burned a large hole in it. Offense may have been the right move, but it was easy to telegraph when you could hardly move. That didn’t stop Ashley from preparing another shot from her wand.

If only she had more time.

The melody/wand one-two punch was a nice combo for minimizing the time between attacks. Melodies took time to cast though, and Ashley barely had enough time for that. Justin’s fly swatter-like arms were about to crush Ashley where she stood, and her wand wasn’t going to fire in time.

Then, an unlikely ally showed up.

In a battle of biblical proportions, it was a snake that came to Ashley’s aid. It sunk into Justin’s left arm, severing it and the flyswatter from Justin. The bloody net floated in the air, but it couldn’t move without Justin to swing it. Though he still had the right one. Blood ran down his legs and rooted him into the roof. The remaining net plowed into a car at Ashley’s left flank.

She couldn’t brace for it.

Something broke inside her arm, Her scapula sung with pain as she was flung to the ground. The remains of dead frogs and insects cushioned Ashley’s fall, but she might have preferred to land on the asphalt roof. Her head rested in some frog intestines, still warm and wet from detonating moments ago.

Ashley couldn’t see Justin bearing down on her. Just like she had predicted, stopping his first attack was not going to stop his assault. The bloody roots that held him to the roof released him. His new wound grew tendrils that latched onto his severed arm. He’d be back in full fighting strength shortly.

Had a war pick not shattered both of his legs.

Damage melodies were potent. They could be strong enough to sever limbs but they were limited in how long they took to cast. In the span of six, an esper could cast only a single melody, leaving them open to retaliation afterwards. Havoc, on the other hand, could do a lot of damage in that time. With a hard enough swing, Havoc could punch through multiple limbs. Justin’s brief stop meant Jacqueline could attack with impunity. His arteries and vessels cracked and shattered with every blow Havoc delivered.

He was about to roll himself over when Jacqueline shattered his remaining arm. The pick sunk into his torso and crushed his heart, but he still lived. Bloody tendrils started to wrap around her legs, even as Jacqueline drove her pick into his skull. His visage was split in two, and what remained was a cracked ruby large enough to be Justin’s brain. Ashley was able to stand back up without Justin’s gaze on her, and she fired her wand straight at the flawed gemstone, shattering it.

Had they killed Justin?

What remained of Justin’s body sunk to the ground. The ruptured blood vessels and remaining organs were now behaving like soft tissue instead of brittle gemstone. One by one, the organs melted into a pool of blood and sunk into the ground. But this did bring up another important question.

Where had all the hail gone?

Jacqueline and Ashley looked up. A spectral moose had appeared. It stood above both of them, horns crossing overhead like a giant net. The moose's antlers overflowed with frozen blood, but it kept those around it safe. Samuel had approached too, if not to seek refuge than to assist with Justin’s extermination. But things like this don’t come out of thin hair. And if that was what happened, someone needed to cast a melody or spell to make it happen.

All eyes turned towards the teal blur from earlier.

Nestled among the overturned cars was a catwoman in a teal dancing dress. She hugged her knees against her chest and looked all around herself. She looked at the spectral moose the way a child may look at an aggressive dog. But that wasn’t how she looked at the Gemini espers. When she looked at them she straightened her posture. Her grip on her knees was a bit more loose. But no matter how many times she scanned them, she couldn’t find what she was looking for.

"Where’s mom?"

No one would have a chance to answer.

Meanwhile, Marrie had emerged from the fifth floor of the apartment building. Pac was nowhere to be seen, which was probably a good thing. She had managed to survive the hail. Marrie herself managed to outrun the giant pac man, who took a few bites out of the hallway before expiring. She put the rest of her energy into scolding the Diver. It was hard to tell if they understood Marrie or even heard her. No behemoth thus far had demonstrated the ability to speak, Diver included. The only answer they gave was swinging their cross through the air. It kicked up some dust in the far corners of Pax Septimus, but as the dust particles came closer, it started to buzz.

This is what the Lord, the God of the Hebrews, says: 'How long will you refuse to humble yourself before me? Let my people go, so that they may worship me. If you refuse to let them go, I will bring locusts into your country tomorrow. They will cover the face of the ground so that it cannot be seen. They will devour what little you have left after the hail, including every tree that is growing in your fields. They will fill your houses and those of all your officials and all the Egyptians—something neither your fathers nor your forefathers have ever seen from the day they settled in this land till now.
— Exodus 10:3–6

The hail was gone, the bugs were only returning.

The streets, the rooftops, all overrun with giant locusts. The teal esper shrieked as one went to land on her, and she punched straight through its head. She ran across the rooftop yelling, but her words were lost in the buzzing. Though a giant spectral cat laid across the gap between the police building and the Diver’s hovering place. Just in time for the strange esper to cross.

If they wanted to put an end to this madness, they’d have to strike the Diver now.

"Brb gonna kill god."
Current Location: Precinct #11

Had he not thought this through?

Perhaps, he had too much hope that this would be it. They could wait out the storm, hope the rest could defeat Justin, and break his thralls free from his control. To hell with the Diver. Finn said it himself, "Just save who we can." At best, he hoped Lydia turned out to be an esper too, but didn't tell him. At worst...

He only hoped she could forgive the fool she called her brother. His mind hadn't even registered the rust that corroded his frame.

The door was left unlocked. Just a bit further and-!!

"AAAGH!!" Betty kneed him in the chest, no doubt returning the favor of rupturing her own boils. Momentarily stunned by the pain, the Timekeeper collapsed forward, giving her the opportunity to flee again. His eyes went wide in fear...for her. The hail was going to kill her if she didn't get to cover. "BETTY NO, WAIT!!" Finn reached out for her in vain. Again. He stood back to his feet as quick as he could will himself to, but it was too late. She dissapeared into the storm. She dissapeared again. He was so close. Everything was starting to look up, despite the pain and hopelessness of the situation.

And he still lost. Whatever hope he was clinging onto like a lifeline was gone in that instant.

Why?

Why can't he do anything right?

Finn wasn't even aware of the other agents' victory over Justin. What would it matter though, that wasn't his fight. Never was. As much as he wished it was, that detestible creep. All that mattered was that he wouldn't hurt anyone anymore.

...So now what? He didn't know how much mana the rest had. He was robbed of the bastard he wanted to kill, and the one person he (for some reason at this rate) wanted to be alive and safe continues to be a pain in the ass. No one was fighting the Diver either, did the other espers in the city get attacked too? As he leaned against the wall by the door, the boy noted two options.

Wait out the rest of the spells. There were only two left till countless firstborns meet their end, but they have wasted too much time and mana on Justin and his toadies.

Or, regroup with the others, and take out what remained of his anger on the diver.

...Right. He hurried back to the roof. He still had a bit of mana left to atleast do something. If not, he would be fine just brute forcing that thing down with his gun and instrument. Someone's gotta get rid of that fucking thing, even if he does die trying. Rusted and bloody, Finn soon emerged back on the top floor and gave the area a quick glance around.

Justin was reduced to a pool of blood. Good riddance. Another new face had appeared to help them out. Locusts appeared too, number eight. Then there it was, the gargantuan asshat himself. Without further delay, Finn broke into a sprint towards the bridge the teal-clad esper had created. He made himself faster, mending his wounds as he prepared himself to strike. Then once he was close enough, he practually launched himself at the Behemoth, aiming to stab it in the head. Then stab it again, and again, and again. "JUST DIE ALREADY!" He roared, driven by desperation and frustration.

Ashley watched with mounting dread as her first glowing shot merely succeeded in blowing a hole in a swiftly repositioned blood barrier, while Justin’s crimson flyswatter appendages rushed upon her from either side with far greater speed than her next shot could be fired through said opening. However, only one of the appendages ultimately made contact with her, the other having been severed by one of her teammate’s attacks. The blow still hurt like hell, breaking her left arm and sending her bruised and bleeding body skidding across the hard, frog and insect-covered rooftop, but, critically, it hadn’t killed her. Not only that, but she was now free from the vampire’s vile paralysis. It hurt to move, it hurt to breathe, but the Knight of Tomorrow didn’t care. Her desire to kill Justin was far stronger than any need to minimize her own suffering.

As she struggled to stand, Ashley saw Leroux’s war pick shatter both of Justin’s legs, before another blow struck his exposed inner torso. Then another, and another… But would even this savage butchery be enough to destroy this fell creature? The high-tech heroine didn’t know, and she wasn’t about to simply wait to find out. Bringing her blood and guts soaked right arm up, while her left dangled uselessly at her side, the Knight of Tomorrow fired a neon green bolt into the center of the vampire’s forehead, just as Leroux’s pick cracked his skull open to reveal the gemstone that passed for his brain. The luminous bolt struck the gemstone, shattering it completely and what little remained of Justin’s body now dissolved into a pool of blood.

Was this it?

Was Justin truly dead?

Even as Ashley fired a second shot into the crimson puddle to make sure, another question occurred to her- What had happened to all the hail?

Looking up, she was surprised to see the massive form of a spectral moose looming over them, its vast antlers shielding the rooftop from the torrent of hailstones. That was also about when Ashley noticed a cat-eared young woman sitting amidst the tangle of wrecked cars.

She was asking about her mother…

Oh, God… Ashley felt her chest tighten, and her breath catch in her throat. This girl… This girl had to be Breacher’s daughter…

Ashley’s heart ached. Killing a monster was one thing, but this? What could she even say? What could she even do? She wanted to hug her, wanted to take away at least some of the pain the girl would surely feel upon learning the horrible truth. Yet, in the end, she was unable to do anything. Before she or anyone else could answer, a swarm of giant locusts descended upon them. Batting as many aside with her techno-wand as she could, Ashley watched as the cat-eared girl turned and ran toward the Diver, a spectral cat facilitating her passage across to the building closest to the gargantuan behemoth.

That’s right… The Diver… Ashley reflected, her eyes widening with understanding. That had been their original objective, before Justin had reared his ugly head, and now that the vampire had been defeated, they could finally deal with it. But the time to do so was rapidly diminishing…

Moving as fast as her battered body would allow, Ashley made her way to the phantasmal feline, and then across it, in an effort to get as close to the Diver as possible. She couldn’t risk wasting a melody to heal herself, not with so little mana remaining. No, she needed to save every last ounce of mystic power for one, final shot at the Diver. The Knight of Tomorrow knew there was a good chance that even her strongest attack would do little against a foe so enormous, but for the sake of thousands of innocent lives, she had to at least try…

I won’t let you kill anyone else!

And so, charging up the most powerful blast she could manage as she ran, and dodging what attacks might come her way to the best of her ability, Ashley would drive her twin-pronged techno-wand into the Diver’s center of mass…

And fire.

Jacqueline Leroux

Wrecking Justin into nothingness was cathartic. Each fury unleashed all her pain, fury, even fatigue onto him, reinvigorating Jacqueline every time a piece of his bodysuit was destroyed. Even after all that, he still lived; but even without a clear idea of what specifically would kill him, she figured she could just pulverize him into nothingness.

Cracking his head open revealed a gem, and she gleefully prepared to swing yet another time. However, Orion was either quicker on the uptake or just luckier this time around, and got the kill. Nonetheless, there was the immense satisfaction in this victory; finishing blow or not, Jacqueline had felled the enemy before her.

A gleeful grin stretched her lips, and she craned her head back to luxuriate in that feeling, if even for a short second. When she next blinked her eyes open, a moose-shaped spirit floated above her. Huh, right. There’d been the hail…and then, there wasn’t, the thing above her shielding her and her allies. Jacqueline looked around, and was quick to find the esper responsible. Then, the cat girl spoke.

“Oooh, fuck no,” she muttered under her breath as the realization hit her.

But there wasn’t any time to answer Mika’s question, or even think about what to do about her. The Diver was still there, still a problem, and if they didn’t deal with it, that’d be a lot of of dead people. Jacqueline followed Fable's lead, Blinking onto the behemoth, and beginning to swing her instrument at it with impunity. As she did so, however, a part of her couldn’t help but think–

Just where the fuck was the damn backup?

"Fable chill the fuck out dude this is Monster Hunter not SotC. Horngang where u @?"

— Sam

Somehow avoiding the nasty hail that fell from above, Samuel managed to catch the apparent end of Justin, hoping that it was the last time they would ever have to see him in anything other than a report. It was far from easy but they had managed to avenge Agent Breacher, which wasn't their main objective but it was important to Samuel.

"Where’s mom?"

Just as Samuel was thinking about Su, a strangely familiar voice asked for its mother. Samuel turned around the see what was obvious an Esper with cat-like features including ears and a tail, sporting attire remisicent of a belly dancer.

That's...?

There was a strong tug at his heartstrings but it wasn't just because of the tragic situation the girl found herself in. It seemed reasonably safe to assume this was likely Su's daughter, which meant she was going to have to learn about her mother's demise sooner or later. A sad thought, but what was really getting at him was the weird sense of relief and familliarity -- similar to how he felt after physically visiting his grandmother after a few years separation.

He pinched his thumb to the side of his index finger and felt a strange sense of loss he couldn't explain, but it had something to do with the girl. This feeling subsided shortly after and, as usual, Samuel had more important things to worry about and so chose to move on.

It seemed Locusts were the current flavor of plague and that meant one less barrier between them and losing firstborns outright. Samuel also had no mana left to assist, meaning he probably wasn't going to be helpful beyond just whacking at the thing, much like it seemed Jacqueline and their newest had set out to do, wasting no time crossing the bridge.

Samuel was last across the feline-construct, swatting away locust where he could. Visibility somehow became worse with the addition of locusts, but he successfully managed to make out the form of Orion, who had begun charging a melody. Fable was ascending the beast in a flamboyant fashion and Jacqueline wasn't really letting herself fall behind, blinking onto the behemoth and going to town on it.

He could not afford the Transplace note necessary to scale the Diver and join Jacqueline and Fable, so he remained in proximity to Ashley. He wasn't sure how effective his attacks might be, but doing anything at all was better than nothing, and his exhaustion was mostly magical in nature, at least for the present.

"Give it everything you have! Lets stop the casualties with this!"

At least he could encourage his allies to do their best.

The first to strike the Behemoth was Jacqueline. It was hard to get a clear shot with the locusts buzzing around, but she wasn’t picky. A place where Havoc’s tip could find purchase was all she required. Jacqueline found her opening and appeared over the Diver’s knee. A single swing punched through the giant cloak. The first of many strikes to come. A low risk attack with a low reward. With the downpour of blood, she couldn’t be sure if her attacks were drawing blood, or even if they were making holes. It almost felt like she was swinging into tar. The Diver was still in one piece.

A shot in the right place may be more effective. Ashley prepared a melody for such a case. Her wand trembled as it surged with power. Its eerie neon glow was visible even through the downpour of blood. But how to deliver it? The Diver was hovering close enough to the ground. He could be climbed, but that was more difficult with a wand and shield in hand. At least the power in her wand wasn’t going away. It would only grow stronger over time. Samuel cut through the locust as Ashley decided her next move.

Finn arrived shortly after and ran up the Diver’s torso, with some help from Marrie’s melody. Unlike the others, Finn didn’t struggle to scale the behemoth. He sliced through the insects that blocked his path, and managed to get to the Diver’s shoulders as his melody ran out.

He scrambled to the Diver’s head. Once his feet were stable he thrust at the behemoth’s jaw. The blade penetrated as deep as Finn could thrust, but his blade came back clean. Clean until the crimson sky stained it red.

Mika was new to all this, but she had to do something. The cat girl was the only one with mana to spare. It was apparent they needed to work together if they were going to bring down this monster. Though what to do eluded her. At least until she realized Ashley and Samuel weren’t attacking the diver.

”Let’s get closer!"

Mika sprung into action. The head of a spectral giraffe emerged under their feet. The snout rose up under Sam, Ashley, and Mika, and they were all seated on it as it took to the sky. And it took to the sky fast. The giraffe raised to the height of the Diver’s hips. But the acceleration was so great that it threw them higher still. While initially surprised, the agents regained their composure.

Samuel spun like a top, eviscerating the incoming locusts.

Mika pulled back her fist and belted out a warcry.

Ashley thrust her wand into the Diver’s center mass.

The tip of Ashley’s wand buried itself in the Diver’s cloak. An explosion of neon burned a hole right over the Diver’s chest. Burnt fabric and ash were scattered to the wind. The Diver’s chest had been exposed, but it was a mystery how much damage had been dealt. There was no gore, no chunks of diver sloughing away.

While Samuel kept the locusts off everyone’s back, Mika maneuvered in for a debilitating punch. She soared towards the behemoth’s exposed chest and threw a punch directly where its heart should have been. Her fist sunk into her target. She had landed a hit.

But the Diver still stood.

Their outlook was getting darker.

Then the Lord said to Moses, "Stretch out your hand toward the sky so that darkness will spread over Egypt—darkness that can be felt." So Moses stretched out his hand toward the sky, and total darkness covered all Egypt for three days. No one could see anyone else or leave his place for three days.

— Exodus 10:21–23

As the fight drew to a close, the clouds darkened even more. The clouds turned black without a single beam of sunlight breaking through. Lightning strikes had taken out the power long ago, leaving the espers to rely on their own effects to see by. But they had come too far to give up. Their remaining mana didn’t matter, nor did their wounds. Finn wanted to do something right. Samuel wanted to complete his objective. Ashley wanted there to be a tomorrow for all the firstborns. Jacqueline knew backup would show up. It just wasn’t here yet.

Not Gemini reinforcements at least.

”Armstrong!” A zombie woman ran up beside Marrie. How Stacy managed to find her in the darkness was unclear. But Stacy was able to do a lot of things without a head, so maybe it was best not to question it too much. Though if she could talk, she must have found one. ”I hope I didn’t make you worry, I could tell there were a lot of fresh heads nearby. I ran into the Mavericks and-” She turned. ”We can catch up later! Let’s move the queen to D9 and sink their battleship!” Stacy lifted Marrie over her head and bound towards the Diver’s location.

Ashley hung from the Diver. Her wand had sunken into its flesh with that last attack, and it was holding onto her instrument. It was the only thing keeping her from taking a very long drop. But it was here by the Diver’s chest that she could hear the sound of an instrument. Harp strings, plucked to the beat of the behemoth’s heart.

It was in this darkness that Ashley could more easily see things with a fainter luster. The diver’s flesh was not fully opaque. She could see the shape of a grand harp floating inside the creature’s chest, just inches away from Mika’s fist…

Ashley was so fixated on ending The Diver’s unholy existence that she hardly noticed how dark her surroundings were rapidly becoming. It helped that her melodies gave off plentiful light, and it was thanks to this light that the Knight of Tomorrow was able to perceive an interesting detail of The Diver’s internal structure. The behemoth appeared to possess a giant harp in place of a heart, or any other internal organs, for that matter. But despite the incongruous nature of this new piece of knowledge, the high-tech heroine knew she didn’t have the time to ponder it at any length. The Diver needed to die, the sooner, the better, and it seemed that she had been presented with an opportunity to make that happen. All she had to do now, was take it…

“Punch it again!” Ashley called to the cat-girl. “You’re almost there!”

Realizing that the harp was probably much too large to be destroyed by a single punch, enhanced or not, the Knight of Tomorrow added her own power to the mix. Using the last of her mana, she sent a burst of green-hued destructive energy into the enormous creature, immediately followed by a blast from her techno-wand, both aimed at the giant harp.

This has to work… It just has to…!

"DiediediediealreadydiealreadydieaLREADYDIEALREADYJUSTFUCKINGDIE!!!"
Current Location: Precinct #11

Undeterred by the locusts that dared to step in his path, the Timekeeper had ascended the behemoth. He didn't even realize someone had assisted him as he sliced through the insects and reached the Diver's shoulders. When his melody's duration ended he desperately reached towards it's head and stabbed his weapon into it's jaw. Sure. The fact that the damn thing didn't bleed would be a cause for concern. But it wasn't like the Crab Rave bled either. It simply escaped his train of thought. No, all that Finn was concered about right now is just...

To have something go right for once?

To give the Diver what absolute hell he could muster, that should've been for Justin?

To make sure no one else dies in this fight?

Who knew. He just wanted this to end.

So as spell number nine was in effect, the Timekeeper stabbed and slashed at the Holy Diver again, and again, and again, aiming for the jaw, the ear, the eyes, even up towards the brain. He eventually settled on it's neck. It couldn't function without a head, could it? Yeah. The brain and the heart were vital organs, and from where he was, he couldn't exactly execute the Diver by his usual methods. But did it matter?

Time grows short, and shorter still.

The rest of the battle fell upon deaf ears.

He was so tired.

Let this be it. Please.

"Really feeling that burn right now"

— Sam

The initial ascent granted by the spectral giraffe, quite frankly, startled Samuel, who still had what happened to Breacher fresh in his mind. But it took merely a heartbeat before Samuel realized he wasn't about to be whisked into the air and crushed, and that Breacher's child had been the one to give them a lift.

"Appreciated"

--or at least that is what Samuel wanted to say. With the cacophony of locust and grunts, some of which were coming from himself, he didn't have the chance, instead spending that breath on yet another stroke of his sword.

As sinister as his grin seemed while fighting, he wasn't sure he could keep this up forever. There were, after all, quite a lot of locust buzzing around, and swords weren't the optimal thing to be using to deal with them. It was exhausting. He could feel his arms burning in disapproval of the sheer amount of swings he was asking of them. It was also difficult for him to tell exactly how helpful he was even being.

It can't be invulnerable, can it?

He chose to cut down more locust, straining himself even harder to keep them off of his allies, hoping this defense would prove beneficial while they desperately sought a way to avoid the coming plague. No time to wait for their cavalry, unfortunately, so things had to be done by the people right here right now. Ashley at least seemed to notice something of importance, though whether it'd lead them to victory remained to be seen.

He could only trust that what his allies noticed would help them succeed in defeating this abomination. The plague-bringing abomination was certainly awesome, durable, and strong. Not unlike how he imagined himself many years ago. Invincible, as if he were some sort of 'god' above his fellow students. A crime karma would not let go unpunished, and yet it was that very same day he had come to learn something: that even 'gods' can fall.

So what if this one was somewhat taller?

Marrie Knight

Marrie was exhausted. Not just mentally, not just from fighting, but with a total of literal zero mana left, she was barely holding up from the three-pronged assault on her stamina. But a true heroine arrived.

"Stacy!" Marrie called shortly after the darkness came down. The zombie began carrying her towards where the Diver had been. She turned on her clip light but could still barely see anything. So she did what she could do, phone a friend.

"What's the plan, Stacy? That thing is too big, and I'm out of mana. So tell me what we can do, and let's do it."

To be honest, Marrie didn't even have the energy to come up with a plan. If Stacy didn't have one, of her own or from the Mavericks, then she'd just have to settle for stabbing the thing in the foot and hope that it was a lion and thorn situation.

They did what they could in the face of despair.

Fable was not deterred when the giant didn’t bleed. If his weapon could cut its flesh, then he could decapitate it. He pressed his sword into the Diver's neck and surged forward. Each time he circled its neck the blade would cut deeper.

Mika did as she was instructed, and her second fist sunk inside the Diver’s flesh., though it was not easy to punch through. ”It’s like mo-lass-sees!" But while Mika struggled, Ashley drew closer with her glowing wand.

The more experienced espers weren’t holding back. Sam made sure the area was locust free, allowing Jacqueline to fire a stream of stones.

Mika drew back her fist as the melody landed. It made a crater, and the ensuing blast from Ashley’s wand made it bigger still. Surely Mika would be able to destroy the harp now. She plowed her fist into the creature’s flesh. Her fist struck the harp.

But it was too slow to do any damage.

The harp remained in one piece, but Mika didn’t give into disappointment. ”I think I feel something!" While too hard to punch through, Mika could maneuver her fingers inside the creature’s flesh. She forced her hand open and was able to get her fingers around the harp. ”I got it! I got it!" But pulling the harp free would prove to be a challenge. She had planted her feet on the behemoth’s chest, but she was sinking into it faster than the harp was being removed. Ashley and Sam took hold of Mika’s waist to help pull her out. It had to help, but now all three of them were sinking into the Diver.

Finn was tired, but he made good progress. He needed to slow down a bit to balance on the Diver’s collar bones in total darkness. But racing around its shoulders and back were a simple matter. He just needed to lean towards the neck to ensure his footing. But as he maneuvered around the behemoth, he spotted a white shape in the darkness. A giant skull. That of some long dead animal.

"Yee of little faith! Why doth thou try so hard?" Chernabog, or maybe Baphomet, floated behind Finn. "If thou can not save thy sister, why not get thee gone? Why risk thy life in a plot thou can not change?" The skull pressed into the side of Finn’s face. "Are thou…mad?" By this point, Finn had cut as deep as he could. The hilt of his blade was pressed up against the Diver’s neck. When Finn blinked a few times, the skull disappeared. He really was tired.

Something tore out of the Diver’s back. A pair of butterfly wings with a fluorescent glow. Unlike the Diver themselves, the wings had every color one could think of. A rainbow of shades from tip to tip. The Diver was starting to float higher in the air. It was clear what was about to happen.

The Diver was leaving, and it was taking the firstborns with him.

"About midnight I will go throughout Egypt. Every firstborn son in Egypt will die, from the firstborn son of Pharaoh, who sits on the throne, to the firstborn of the slave girl, who is at her hand mill, and all the firstborn of the cattle as well. There will be loud wailing throughout Egypt—worse than there has ever been or ever will be again."

— Exodus 11:4–6

But off in the distance, Finn could make out a green-skinned person standing on a railing with a young woman. Or at least, he could hear them. It was still pretty dark.

”I thought you had a plan!” The zombie chuckled. ”But that’s fine. I play a lot of board games so you know I have a strategic mind. Backup is probably going to arrive late so it’ll just be you and me.” Stacy turned to the Diver. ”Here’s an idea, let's hit it as hard as we possibly can!”

Most espers had olympic level fitness, but many monsters possessed strength in another league entirely. When Stacy leaped off the balcony, most espers would assume she was a monster by her athletic ability alone. The metal handrail bent as Stacy propelled the duo through the air. They soared through the downpour of blood towards their target. Stacy pointed her feet towards the behemoth and landed square on the back of its head.

CRACK

The diver’s head would normally be too strong to kick off, even with a monster delivering the blow. But Finn had cut deep into its flesh, and necks were hollow by their nature. The partially severed spine was the only thing that held it in place, and it gave out when Stacy landed her blow. The head rolled off of its shoulders.

Below, Ashley and Sam were still pulling on Mika. The snapping of the Diver’s spine caused their eyes to look upwards. The Diver’s bioluminescent wings offered just enough light to make out the head. But it wasn’t possible to tell if the Diver had been killed or not. Its wings were still moving, it still floated higher into the air. The weak point had yet to be destroyed.

Agent Leroux wasn’t quite done yet either. With all the other agents tugging on Mika, she had finally scaled the giraffe to help them. But when the head came tumbling down, there was an opportunity. She held onto Mika with one hand, and swung her war pick at the Diver’s falling noggin. The intent was not to destroy it, but to imbed her weapon in its flesh. If the three of them couldn’t pull Mika free, maybe the weight of the Diver’s own head would be enough.

The other agents caught on. Ashley and Sam held onto Jacqueline and Mika. They locked their arms and limbs around each other however they could. The problem with using such a massive object is that there was the chance they could be pulled off of Mika without pulling her free. And of course, none of this would matter if Mika’s hand slipped off the harp. But there would be no time to think of all the possibilities. Once the head fell and pulled everyone taught, it was over. The Diver’s chest detonated like a bomb. The espers could feel the strain on their bodies as their limbs were stretched as far as they could. But there was some relief when something gave inside the Diver’s bosom. And there, soaring through the air, held sternly in Mika’s paw, was the harp. Even with the blood and tar flying through the air, it shined in the dull neon glow of the Diver’s wings.

But Mika wasn’t the only one holding onto it.

On the other side of the hand was a young woman, bald and wearing a straitjacket. She had a white knuckle grip on the harp and didn’t seem like she was going to let go. Mika’s pupils dilated when she realized how close they were to each other. She could understand the whole esper thing. Her mother had told her about it from time to time. But she was at a loss as to what to do here. They were all falling, and she had no idea if she could trust this new person or not. But did she even have a power that would work here? As intuitive as being an esper was, she drew a blank. The ground was coming at them faster and faster.

Then out of the darkness came a massive inflatable stunt bag, the kind that stunt men use when falling off of buildings. The more advanced ones are able to accommodate multiple stuntmen, and could reset themselves between individual impacts so that nobody “bounced” once they landed on them. It was softer than landing on the asphalt roof of the building, but the espers had the wind knocked out of them on impact.

Meanwhile up above, Finn, Marie, and Stacy stood on the Diver’s shoulder. ”Looks like I killed it! Why didn’t you guys try hitting it in the head?” The trio lost their footing as soon as the Diver’s headless body crashed into the roof. Before it could do any real damage, the behemoth’s molasses-like body lost its shape and seeped off either side of the building. Even the wings were melting. The remaining espers (and monster?) fell onto the stunt bag along with the other Gemini espers.

Samuel, Jacqueline, Ashley, Finn, Marie, Stacy, Mika, and the woman in the straitjacket were all present. The latter of the bunch had fallen unconscious, but even in sleep retained their grip on the harp. Even with the Diver dead, the harp was in one piece.

A ninth person slipped out of the darkness and landed before the group. Veronica stood before them with a tea cup in one hand and a platter in the other, but her smile was not present.

”Kept you waiting, huh?” She folded her arms. ”Seems our enemy was able to predict the Diver’s arrival. But you were able to complete the objective regardless.” Veronica looked over everyone present. ”Where’s Breacher?”

"... *Sigh*"
Current Location: Precinct #11

Round and round like a carousel, Finn circled the Behemoth's neck, steadly yet quickly severing flesh from flesh. The bone will be more of a hastle to cut through. Did he truely have enough time to pull this off?

Someone from the dark didn't think so.

The skull of the demon that continued to haunt him so seemed to take the opportunity to speak to him.

He was...telling him to escape. That there was no point in clinging to a desperate hope that he could save Lydia. Implying that he wanted Finn to live. Finn could feel discordant retorts bubbling up in his throat, he could feel how his hands trembled at the mere presence of the demon. Hypocrisy. Why suggest bowing out NOW of all times, when he himself nearly crushed him to death.

And yet, you can't exactly die in a dream, can you? You can only feel death.

Unless he noticed something different about the boy. A morbid curiosity on both ends. The demon's last inquiry attested to that. Finn took a deep breath, drew in his emotions, then gave Baphomet a tired, dead-eyed glare.

"You already know."

In a blink, the demon was gone.

The diver was leaving. Number ten...

He was too late, wasn't he?

...

But the boy still clunged to the summit of the behemoth, and everyone else was being flown up too! They can still kill this thing! Or really, she can! Finn could overhear another newcomer over by the railing. Next thing he knew, she dealt the blow he needed to fully decapitate the damn thing. The other agents and Mika took out it's "heart" in a way. But they all came falling down, in the end. At least someone tossed them some padding. Throughout these little events, Finn didn't react. He did eye the harp that made two (wait...two??) of them fall unconscious, but only when Veronica finally appeared, did he speak.

"Justin." He spoke with a grim tone, untransforming. He looked back to Veronica, and his dead glare remained. "Justin, and that fucking ghost Gunther murdered her, and we couldn't stop it in time. It couldn't be a coincidence that they appeared just before the Diver appeared, with Pac-A-Fist and Betty in tow no less. How he flaunted them like trophies...That creep deserved nothing less than Hell." His hands balled tightly into fists. At the mention of the thralled captives, his face softened up. "We need to find those two. They couldn't have gotten far in the hailstorm, much less this darkness! And if you haven't begun research on how to cure thralldom then by god, just do it! I'll even toss my hand into it, take one of your empty labs if I have to!" It took a bit of willpower for the boy not to pass out from exaustion. After another second, he sighed.

"No one else was fighting the Diver, were they? What happened? Tell me everything."
