Third times the charm mayhaps but four score, and all that I guess? This is a thread for the discussion of all things video game related, to share our hottakes and our own garbage opinions of games we either love to love or love to hate. Isn't that right Pal? @SleepingSilence anyways feel free to post the latest steam sales, free games that you know of or the latest game that has your interest. And I don't intend to let this one die.

I saw that Gamespot dropped a hands-on preview of Highguard today. The game is sitting at Mostly Negative on Steam, and I don't personally have any interest in it, but GS were describing the game as if it's some novel new experience that has no genre. While I was listening to them describing it, a term immediately came to mind—it's an FPS MOBA. That's literally it. It's not anything new, and it doesn't have to be.

In some more news I'm personally invested in is the new marine for Space Marine II which hopefully will add some much more needed variety to the game on top of hopefully more cool cosmetics to earn in game.

Because @Dark Cloud has bothered me out of my retirement. Here's a list of games that I've been playing and their scores that might not be entirely accurate.

I started the new year getting miserably ill & having a toothache for almost a full week. (Before I could be charged big bucks to get it fixed.)

So games that I got for Christmas and birthday gifts have been a nice counter to how my month started.

I have MIO: Memories In Orbit to play next. (Among a handful of others titles that should be a good time.)

It's not even an FPS MOBA. It is an FPS Buffet but not like one of those fancy buffets that you get at Vegas or something, but like a buffet where they have those eternally sticky plastic mats by the Coke machine and the wettest macaroni and cheese you've ever seen.

It is a mix of a bunch of different concepts from FPS games of the past decade or so but none of them work together in any coherent way. You have a base where at the start you reinforce by putting crap on the walls (like Rainbow Six Siege) then you go out and loot chests to find blue and purple weapons and armor (like Fortnite or Apex) then the objective spawns and it becomes CTF until someone brings the flag to the enemy base where now it becomes a bomb planting game like CS where the attacking team has to either destroy two sites or one super special site while the defending team has to, well, defend. If defense successful, go back to the loot part and repeat.

But here's where everything else falls apart.

-It's 3v3 and the maps are empty. There are only ever three people to shoot in the map but the map is pretty big (how else will they justify selling mounts and $22 mount skin packs) and during the loot phase you can go the entire time not seeing a single soul.

-At the start of the match you can select two weapons and a heavy weapon (for breaking walls). There's no cost to this, you just pick the weapons you like. Then in the loot phase, you are basically left up to luck to see if you get a blue or purple or orange tier of the weapon you like. Chances are you won't. This means you will have to either change your loadout based on what weapon you get in a chest or go farming for crystals.

-The crystals are because there's a shop at different points in the map. The shop sells weapon upgrades and armor. This leads to a scenario where during the loot phase it is likely better to simply farm these crystals and buy the upgraded weapons and armor you want rather than leave it up to chance. This also makes it more likely that you don't see anyone during the loot phase, thus making the early part of the game boring.

-The respawns are 17 seconds long. This is far too long especially once the actual engagements happen. These respawns are only so long because there is a system where your teammates can revive you by holding a button by your corpse to rez you and enemies can do the same and prevent you from even being rezzed. So it is quite possible that you will respawn during a base defense, die immediately, and have to wait another 17 seconds.

-Any armor you get you lose one stack of on death. This means if you get, say, purple armor and die, you go down to blue armor. If you only have, say, two stacks of blue armor, you will have no armor if you die three times. This creates a system where if you die during the defense/attack phase, it is possible that this snowballs you into being even easier to kill repeatedly and thus hastens your defeat.

-The hero abilities are so half assed that it's easy to forget you even have them. Every character has one ability, one passive, and an ult. I played as a muscular masked lady whose passive is 'spirits will bring her loot'. It happened twice in three games.

-The characters have no style. One of them just looks like reject Ken from Street Fighter and another is edgy Jack Frost from Rise of the Guardians. You could put the eight characters side by side and they would not look like they were from the same universe.

-Grenades also have a cooldown because why not, it works in Destiny.

I'm sure the game has an audience. I'm just not sure who that audience is.

Ubisoft's shares have plummeted from $100 to somewhere around $5, leading to a 91% decrease in valuation since 2018. Ever since Yves Guillemot has tried to pivot towards Web3 and AI, among consistent disappointments with their releases over the years, people are just not putting their interest in the company's games anymore. This restructuring is probably going to be a last ditch effort for them to save a sinking ship, though I have no idea how they're going to do that. They've cancelled multiple games and shut down two studios so far, delayed several other projects, instated an RTO mandate, and a French union has been quoted as saying that Guillemot "has no knowledge or understanding of his company."

Dark days ahead for Ubisoft.

I suck ass at Deadlock

I love the style of Deadlock

One of these will either have me grinding until I'm good at it or simply admiring from afar. Not sure which yet.

mood af

I'm not a MOBA player (only MOBA I've played *for real* is Pokemon Unite on my phone), but Deadlock certainly has my attention. I don't play it that much though since Fortnite and Marvel Rivals have consumed most of my gaming time along with a touch of BF6.

I posted this on Steam for MIO: Memories In Orbit.

Got the true ending. (Tried Sol & Vin 30-40+ times. Moved on to beat the final boss in six. Wonder if the devs played or were inspired by Grime.)
The game is very pretty.
The soundtrack is gorgeous & I will likely listen to it on Spotify/outside of the game.
The map is perfectly serviceable and occasionally rewarded you for paying attention like any good map should. (Though Youtubers advertising the gimmick as if it was particularly unique is bizarre. When it’s really not. But being able to view the map from anywhere is simply better design anyway.)
For a typical souls/Metroidvania story, I actually (probably) understood what was going on. And that’s impressive when the story is also not intrusive/cutscene heavy. (Not sure who *wanted* that to be the end credits scene. But at least it does have closure.)

And then they say those who can’t say anything nice shouldn’t say it all…

I really wish I enjoyed the gameplay part more.

Likely my biggest personal disappointment since Worldless. Youtubers couldn't stop praising it. I expected to like it a lot. It has genuine potential. Only for me to end the game with a sigh.

My PS5 subscription gave me another Metroidvania to try, Ultros. But its gimmick is apparently being a rougelite, and that sounds like the worst possible gimmick ever crafted. So if that bores me fast enough, I have Toodee and Topdee, (A platforming/puzzle game with the gimmick to change perspectives.) and Chronoquartz (A time-loop puzzle game) to play next. (And the puzzle games that I've played this year haven't failed me yet. Though that was also true for games with robots/AI in them.)

The answer for that, seems to be no one.

But good news, Bungie's Marathon and Guerrilla's Horizon will have their multi-million dollar tryouts next.

In the meantime, I'm not super hyped about any particular release that's coming out. Not that the hype machine certainly hasn't tried.

From Crimson Desert. (With every X post acting as if the Black Desert devs - who literally can't make a working MMO tutorial - somehow made the second coming of Christ in video game form.) Suda51's new game; Romeo Is A Dead Man. (Which for better or worse sounds exactly like a Suda51 game.) Mewgenics, a game that's selling like hotcakes right now. (Even if it is another Rogue-lite that I probably wouldn't like.) And REANIMAL releases tomorrow. (Because the devs that abandoned Little Nightmares, really wanted to make a very similar game under a new IP?)

Plus, I found another disappointment. Toodee & Topdee got really frustrating to play halfway through. (And the last part of the last boss glitched out on me several times, before it let me finish the game.) And I could not be bothered to collect the 110 thingamajigs to reach the secret final levels. (Only 3% of players on Playstation bothered.)

But I did only spend five bucks on it. So eh. Swing and a miss.

Edit: A day didn't even go by yet. And I saw another fucking multiplayer hero shooter announcement being made by Imagine Dragons. How is this real life?

Edit 2: Sony's return policy can suck my dick. And For The King 2 is absolutely fucking broken & it really pisses me off that I can't get it refunded when I'd have my money back on Steam already.

Holy f*cking sh*t. Three years of the game being on the PS5.

And a DAY after my comment on the Steam forums about the menu auto-scrolling, and battles taking two repeated prompts to confirm an attack.

Then they patched it and fixed them both... (Made the class selection a drop down menu instead.)

I'm dumbfounded that I'm the sole reason the game functions. But it's just another example of how fans correctly complaining can 100% work and improve a product for the better.

Round of applause to the For The King 2 devs. Genuinely elated.

Edit: I also bought Sheepo & liked it a lot. Man really knows his stuff. (Excited for the dev's upcoming project. He's 3 for 3.)

Continuing my playthrough of Resident Evil games while I wait for RE9 to come out this week.

The remake for RE2 is miles better than RE3. RE3 feels too linear compared to the exploration you had in RE2. Even Nemesis wasn't that much of an issue; his boss fights weren't too much of a challenge and I really only struggled during the chase scenes because dodging could be wildly inconsistent at times. Surprised they haven't fixed the camera angle issue where it hyperfocuses on Nemesis during his boss fights by now lol

I got fooled so badly by the RE3 remake demo back when it came out. The demo was that early portion of the game in that largely open Raccoon City streets area, which ended up being the best part of the entire game, imo. Most of the rest is, like you said, far too linear, and the game is way too short overall. I really should've waited for a sale on RE3.
