RPGC WEEKEND EDITION #1: AWAKENING!

Welcome one, welcome all!

As you may have noticed, this is not a full RPGC, hence the qualifier β€œWeekend Edition.” This is a new thing, a random 2:00 AM brainchild. I have no idea if this new thing will work or even become a real thing, but we shall see.

The way this is going to work is as follows:

A prompt and a format of writing will be issued. – these are mandatory.
Authors will have two days to write. – entries will be posted when I wake up on the 19th.
All entries received by the morning of the 19th will be posted to a discussion thread. – it is encouraged for writers to comment and critique one another’s work.
On the morning of the 20th, trophies will be awarded to all who have captured the theme in the proper format. – This will constitute the end of the contest, and RPGC #12 will begin.
A special trophy may also be conferred upon one user, if they have demonstrated exemplary form and/or function in their writing. This will be at the discretion of the contest staff.

So now that that’s out of the way. The prompt will be...

AWAKENING.

The entry format will be

SHAKESPEAREAN SONNET.

See below for further information.

Regarding the theme…

For this contest you will write an entry to do with an awakening. What, exactly, awakens is entirely up to you. For amongst all beings – be them of gods, beasts, or men -- one thing is certain: There is an awakening. Every pair of eyes opens to the dawn; every thought, every idea has a root. Every fire of war is kindled from a single action. Take whatever flame, whatever spark, whatever ideal you would like, and give it a breath of life.

Regarding the format…

For this contest you will write a Shakespearean sonnet. For those unfamiliar with the terminology this is the more β€œtraditional” form of sonnet – four alternating quatrains and a couplet. Traditionally these are written in iambic pentameter, though the judging panel will be somewhat less picky about reading for stress, so long as the poem has some semblance of flow. Ten syllables a line. Exceptions can be made for style but it is rather rare in the source material, so do make sure it actually adds something.

I think that’s about all I have… As always, submit entries to @RPGC Entry by objective midnight on September 18th!

... List of words I have no idea what they mean. Let's start with "Sonnet". Then "Quatrains" and "Couplet". And for that matter, "Iambic" and "Pentameter" as well as their combination. If I'm to enter this, I'll have some research to do... XD

Edit: http://www.shakespeare-online.com/sonnets/sonnetstyle.html ... OK, got it. Actually, not sure I got it, but I got to read examples, and I think I got it. Heh.

Edit 2: ... And now when I've also googled about the difference between stressed and unstressed words, I can see this is going to be really difficult... heh... alright...

Since I'm a complete competition noob, I have to ask: how do you mean submit entries to RPGC Entry? I would assume it means PM them, but I'd like to make sure.

Gentle reminder that about 11 hours remain.

I'm not going to be the strictest about enforcing the objective midnight thing -- get it in before I wake up on the morning of the 19th, which typically falls between two and three hours after objective midnight, and it will be posted. THIS IS NOT DESIGNED TO STRESS YOU OUT.

GAAAH I wish I'd seen this when it was posted, I love iambic pentameter and a sonnet would be a refreshing challenge, but it's bedtime now and I work tomorrow. *sobs*

Once again, though, I'm never sure if objective midnight is EST, PST, or GMT. There really should be a label, especially for a thing this short. =P

Objective Midnight means 'Once it has been Midnight for the Entire World.'

So effectively GMT 12/-12.

<.< >.> *whips out her notepad and gets to work* ^.^

Actually, I owe Terminal thanks for this -- Alyssana came about because of one of the TTL labors: a moral person unfettered. So thank you, she's currently my favorite character. *hugs her to pieces and dies from stabbing*

@Silver Well, you can't get a trophy...but it's more than acceptable to write something after the deadline just to see if you /would/ have. I've done that for a couple TTL things. ^.^
