Hey so I just seen some status's today, and it made me curious if there were other world of warcraft players on this site besides myself.

Because this could be a cool general hang out thread for the game.

It should come as no surprise I have been a druid since the game itself began; the Feral specialization, even when it was atrocious, always had my heart. For Warcraft as a whole however, there is much to be said and I have a certain fondness for the earlier incarnations despite their numerous quirks and the immense investment of time required. In some ways I am mesmerized by these early works, many of which are now only preserved in the supplements that were made for Dungeons and Dragons based off of it, as there was a distinct style and narrative that felt largely ageless.

I was a huge fan of Warcraft 3 (Reign of Chaos and Frozen Throne) before WoW, and when WoW came out I got it 3 days after release back in 2004. Needless to say I was surprised it wasn't a strategy game, but I played it for years off and on. Last time I got on was this year for a small bit, but it was short lived. Biggest amount of time I played recent years was back in late 2014 for a few months. My fav character was my Dwarf Paladin named 'Splat' for his massive hammer back in grade school.

Ok well, you guys have cool classes and some of you started in what they say was vanilla wow?

For me I started at the end of burning crusade into lich king and then left when cataclysm dropped.

My main was my lvl 80 protection warrior, and it was fun, except when I was struggling to get gear and at the same time not sure if the gear I had was good enough to tank an end game place.

So I understand farming, trying to collect that next achievement and unfortunately its time consuming Poi. :(

POOHEAD189 what was warcraft 3 like, what kind of mechanics did it use?

The Harbinger of Ferocity I was ok with the art in the game. I think before I was more into questing but now since I have come back to the game this month actually, I'm more into messing around with the games moves to see what I can do for mobility/damage reduction/combos, just creative stuff.

Also its cool to know that D & D was based off world of warcraft? That I didn't know. I have friends who are big dungeons and dragons fans.

There was a certain style the game had throughout and up until the release of Cataclysm, which was to say the old world. Certain mechanics I am familiar to and was fond of - paladin seals were iconic, rogues having to craft various poisons and harvest them, hunters having to find just the perfect animal companion of the type they wanted, having to time and check your pulls so you did not attract too many enemies, the pace of combat tended to be much slower - so they hold a special place in this feline's memory. Initially, when I first began, I knew so little of the game that I wandered and leveled by grinding, killing monsters which I was a bit stronger than and doing the odd quest I could figure out, selling the rest of the scrap and any loot on the auction house. This pattern of behavior actually allowed me to purchase not only a mount, but an epic mount as a nobody; I had stumbled into a taste of success. That only grew when the Burning Crusade was released and I discovered what raiding actually was. I shelved my druid then for a time, which was to say a mistake.

In general, older Warcraft felt more gritty and atmospheric, much more open too. I suppose this can be best described with massive locations in the old incarnation as with the Barrens, the Plaguelands, Stranglethorn Vale and so on. It was a slow going pace and you were just expected to discover things on your own and bring a party or friend wherever you could. Talents allowed you to, through even a bit of trial and error, figure out what a character was to even be.

As for Dungeons and Dragons, they made a variant of the game that used rules and lore from Warcraft. Warcraft itself has a great number of obvious inspirational choices based off the game, just as the same could be said for the DOOM franchise.

I played WoW for a few days. Got to level ten as a Tauren and a Night Elf. Vanilla WoW, that is. Haven't played since, mostly because my broken arm healed and I never looked back. MMOs have never been my cup of tea. Did enjoy myself for a little bit, anyway.

Starcraft: Brood War is my preferred game. GOLIATH ONLINE. I suck at the actual game tho, I just do UMS stuff.

@Gareth Unlike most in this thread, I actually started mid-Wrath. Played the trial over and over, liked it, and bought the game. Originally started with a blood elf paladin, but around level 50 or so I started leveling an orc hunter and shelved the paladin. Time went on, did some PvP and PvE at max level before transferring to Alliance. Now I have a 101 Hunter, a 100 Mage, a 86 Paladin, a 82 Death Knight, a 73 Druid and a 60 Warrior. Ain't much to brag about, but years ago I poured my heart and soul into WoW, only to play it occasionally now. However, compared to WoD, Legion has greatly taken my interest, and it doesn't feel as boring as it once was.

hunters having to find just the perfect animal companion of the type they wanted

I understand that all too well. My hunter's stable is full of pets from all over the place, like Ban'thalos (the spirit beast who made me sigh internally trying to position myself on the top of a tree to tame it), the Firelands lava spiders, or simply any random pet I thought looked cool. Sambas has been my go-to pet since Cataclysm, but I occasionally use other pets at times.

I remember right before MoP hit. I had farmed 3.4k honor for my hunter's statstick (polearm/staff), and then the pre-patch came out a few days later. All my hard work was useless since hunters had their ranged limit removed and could only equip one weapon.

There was a charm to older Warcraft, at least from my perspective, which has in part returned with the most recent expansion. It is no original game, or even the Burning Crusade, but things again feel distinct. Cataclysm was notorious for this, being a huge return to form but one that shocked the newer populace too much, hence the "reset" of sorts with everything up until now. I feel that so long as it clings to its identity and what made the game as it were, it might actually survive. Now this is not to agree with some changes they have made - I loathe what they have done with gear for example, not having things such as Dodge, Parry, Hit Rating and the like - but many core aspects like class identity are alive and well, particularly with how artifacts were played out.
