Name: Gunner Gunnerson
Race: Human in his later 30s
Job: Gunner is the towns Skald/Occasional adventurer.
Background:
Drifting into town some 20 years ago as a traveling skald hailing from the northern tribes. Gunner took a liking to the town deciding then to settle down in Lorenstad. He quickly became the fixture at the local tavern regaling the patrons nightly with stories, ballads, and poetry from his homeland. The skald still had the burning desire for adventure in his heart often leaves on adventures and expeditions. Leaving for months on end coming back with more tales to tell to the crowed. Gunnerson has recently return back to the town after his most recent journey with an expedition to locate a hidden ruin.
Home: He lives in shack in the woods.

Breock Crowley

Name: Breock Crowley
Race: Human
Job: Breock is the son of a foreman, and is currently a farmboy working diligently with his family to make crop yields for the year. Under the table and through much secrecy, Breock also acts as a shaman to others, battling spirits and undead and undoing curses.
Background: Breocks family were some of the first frontier farmers that came to Lorenstad. The Crowley family has a reputation amongst the other menial workers in town due to their lineage and their sense of community. Every problem big and small in the community, the Crowleys are always there to help. Without them, the town wouldn't have built up defenses against the goblin horde of 273, and people would have starved had the Crowleys not stockpiled food to shared food during famines. Everyone in town knows the Crowleys, but their name is nothing to nobility.

Just like every other one of his descendants Breock was raised in the same old farmhouse, in the same old town. He spent his years as a child helping tend to crops and playing in the woods like any other child. As he grew, so did his obligations in the family. Even with 7 other siblings, there was plenty of work to share on the farm, and when there wasn't, others need help and Breock begrudgingly helped. It was as he became a teen that his obligations went from annoying to dangerous. His father revealed a secret study to him, a room filled with occult items, books on curses and magical healing, and an armory of silvered weapons and holy water. In time Breock took to his new chores as he did with all the others. He learned that people came to them for more than just to borrow a workhorse or ask for help working their fields. They came to the family with more dangerous matters as well. Spirits, demons, and other evil beings are a very real danger in Lorenstad, and the Crowleys do their best to understand and destroy these things. By the time Crowley was officially an adult, his family deemed him ready to pursue the family career after his years of study and training. He took to it with gusto. It was far more exciting than his humble farmboy life.

Home: On the outskirts of town, next to the massive fields of wheat is a humble orchard and ranch with a dilapidated two-story farmhouse. A few other structures surround the house; A shed, a barn, and most notably a large grain mill. The house opens up to an open hearth with a long wooden table. The house is messy and the old wood floor creaks and splinters so it's best to keep your shoes on. The house is modest but a few pieces of heirloom furniture and decor help liven up the place, as well as plentiful flowers and lanterns to liven up the room. There is no wall separating their small kitchen, mostly using a wood oven, or the large stew pot to cook. The upstairs is nothing but bedrooms, 2 children, to each, save for the eldest son, Quatso Crowley, who has his own room.

Hidden on the farmstead, under a hatch in the grain mill is a small room filled with shelves of books on the occult, cursed items, and other magical items. The room is uncharacteristically luxurious, covered in tapestries depicting various gods, demons, and spirits, bronze, and golden sigils are set in each corner of the room, resting on small soft pillows. There is care put into how each cursed item is contained so that it would be tedious to get to it. The room has fine carpets, incense, and herbs to make the aroma gentle, and gives off a much more poised disposition to the messy house above the ground.

(...)The Merfolk are the aquatic relatives of the Elves, sharing some of the more notable Elvish traits like long lifespans and a stronger affinity for magic, while also sporting many radical divergences in appearance and form. Much like their land-dwelling relatives, two Merfolk can be different enough to be considered a different race on their own, making the moniker a familial grouping of the many varieties of aquatic peoples.

Despite their variety, there are numerous traits that all observed Merfolk possess without exception. As many would assume, all of them have fine scales protecting their skin from the salty waters. Each race of Merfolk is noted to possess greater webbing on their hands and feet, along with fins extending from the middle of their forearms, hips and lower back. In place of hair, these peoples possess various crests and fins of varying size and length that adorn the head and smaller fins that form a fringe over their temples. All Merfolk possess gills in proximity to the torso, usually running down the sides of the torso, and breathe water via their gills. Though they possess pseudo-lungs that allow them to speak, they cannot breathe only air. Finally, Questioning their seeming ease of navigation, all Merfolk have implied that they possess underwater hearing strong enough to allow them to hear things from beyond horizon, and use this to navigate long distances and find one another.

Some of our scholars theorize that Merfolk diverged from Elves due to a greater intermingling with Fey bloodlines. This theory is supposedly supported by Merfolk's great physical variance based on the environments they live in. Others postulate that the Merfolk are a branch of Elvish precursors that never left the oceans, implying that the Elves' origins lay in the Depths and not on land. Many theories exist about the origins of these peoples, but there is no end in sight for these debates, and I fear this argument will endure for an age or more... What is known, is that they have been around for a very long time, which can be observed in some pockets of Merfolk civilization still using what appears to be ancient languages and texts thought long dead in their rituals(...)

Subspecies: Western Sea Shallows Merfolk

Excerpt from Official Ducal study on local Merfolk morphology, writ by Court Scholar Holo Tolfel

(...)The "Western Shoals" Merfolk can be found living around the islands of the Armiri Sea off the eastern coast of the duchy. These people live, as the name suggests, in the shallow waters around sandy shoals and oceanic shelves. They fall just short of Humans in average height, and seem to trend towards brighter colors akin to the local corals. One of the more obvious features is an alternate formation of the common brow-fins into branching segments that resemble long hair. Segments appear to be thinner for the men and thicker for the women, with the distant ends changing into a secondary coloration. Men have less loose frill-like secondary finnage, but both sport primary fins of equal size. The final significant variation is the presence of a minor crest over the forehead above the brow, ending in a point just before the bridge of the nose.

Two novel traits are not immediately observable, but no less present. The first is a greater endurance for walking on dry land, withstanding up to an hour out of the water before signaling discomfort, though up to two hours can be managed without ill effect. The second hidden trait they possess is a resistance to severe cold. As the shoals are subjected to seasonal shifts in temperature, the waters they call their home can become so savagely cold as to threaten the very life of any sailor to fall in. These people report that they commonly endure the bitter cold with little beyond lethargy. There are rare reports that imply that, should the sea reach cold enough to freeze, our local merfolk fall into a protective sleep that persists until the cold spell lifts.

Job: Roa works as a Jeweler in Lorenstad, repairing the few precious trinkets and baubles the townspeople have, appraising found valuables, making new treasures on her own, or selling various supplies and materials to other merchants around town. Every once in a while she will leave town to hunt for pearls in the ocean.

Separate from her home, she owns a small boathouse at the end of a river dock to serve as a workshop where she spends a not-insignificant portion of her time each day.

Background: Roa has lived in Lorenstad for just eight short years, but she has been traveling the waters of the duchy and the sea for just over two decades. She has spent a lot of time exploring the world, catching glimpses of the numerous land-dweller cultures along the coastline as well as out to sea. On her travels she made use of her unique nature, gathering rarities from the ocean to fund her exploration and learning.

As her desire to wander waned, she knew she would need more than exotic foods or rare herbs to make a home for herself among the land-dwellers. She built off of what she already had, and opted to learn how to better sell the pearls traders seemed to value so highly. She learned from jewelers and gem cutters from Struq to Grada over the span of a few years. Thankfully, her training had begun paying off early enough to afford her a workshop in the village of Lorenstad, and eventually her home.

Now, Roa has grown comfortable with her peaceful day-to-day life, and plans on immersing herself in the village's culture. There are still some things she wants to work towards, but her wandering is finally over. Roa has finally found home.

Home: Roa lives in a small sloop she purchased second-hand and then promptly sank directly underneath her workshop in Lorenstad. Barely large enough to have a below-decks , Roa's home isn't particularly spacious, equating to a single bedroom, but it provides what she needs to live comfortably. She spent a fair amount of money to have her makeshift home enchanted against rot, ensuring it will last if maintained. She also had a small number of lanterns enchanted to provide underwater light at night, visible from the docks above.

Thanks, I spent a solid chunk of time on this one. Yours is a cool concept too, a sort of hometown hunter-of-monsters, though here's hoping a lot of his work is preventative. Wards and rituals and magic are always a fun addition to rope people into!

Calleida

Name: Calleida (kuh-LIE-duh) Fynwynlynn

Race: Varies…

Calleida is cursed to shapeshift into a random animal twice a day – twelve noon and twelve midnight. The vast majority of the time, she becomes some mundane animal, though once a month or so she’ll spend some time as a mythical beast or a humanoid race. Her “original” race/species, if she ever had one, is unknown. It is believed she was supposed to be some form of intelligent humanoid, however, because in all her forms she is capable of humanoid activities like speaking, using tools (as her form permits), abstract thought, and humanoid emotions. In addition, she can communicate with the type of animal that matches her current form. The only thing mostly constant about Calleida’s appearance is her misty gray-green eyes, present in all animal forms except those that don’t have noticeable eyes.

Job: Calleida is trying to be more responsible now that her father is aging, though she has trouble holding down a consistent job for… reasons. By day, she’s found a few places she might be paid for temporary work. Plowing fields, dusting the insides of potion bottles, what have you. By night, she may be seen performing by the wanderers’ roads, hoping to get some tips from gullible passersby who haven’t heard her tale… or perhaps those who have.

Background: Oryxtheos Fynwynlynn, the Sensational (in his heart) Sword-Swallowing Satyr, met Calleida when she was a mere puppy in a box abandoned by the roadside. The vagabond was used to traveling alone, but he figured a dog might make a nice traveling companion – and who could resist those puppy-dog eyes? He was quite surprised when the pup soon transformed into a young rhinoceros – and a snake – and, most frightful of all, a baby satyr. Oryxtheos was no stranger to mystical adventure in his younger days, though, and he decided to take on the challenge of raising this animal. Then, months later, the creature began to babble and imitate Oryxtheos’ actions, almost like a… child? Oh no.

The two continued a wandering satyr’s life for a couple years, but Oryxtheos could no longer deny that the open roads were a poor place to raise a child, much less one that could turn into a worm at a moment’s notice. Besides, his knees were getting a little old for all this wandering and traveling and seeing the sights, anyway. The small town of Lorenstad seemed as good a place as any – not too pompous or cramped or anything – and there they settled for the next seventeen years.

Though Calleida is not his daughter by blood, she picked up several of Oryxtheos’ traits: curiosity, spunk, quick wit, love of the open country, improvisation, a free spirit, a wanderlust that has led to multiple near disasters and great campfire stories. Sometimes Calleida thinks the old man is TOO strict and overprotective. After all, he tells a lot of fantastic tales about his youth, and Calleida wishes she could have some adventures of her own – or at least some normal kid adventures. But whenever she’s bullied, or she feels left out, or the stairs are just too big to climb, Oryxtheos is always there to offer the very best support he can.

Of course the topic of breaking Calleida’s curse has come up. Twice the Fynwynlynns have scraped together most of their money for some wizard who promised a miracle cure or at least some answers, only to be scammed. The possibility will always be at the back of their minds, but at this point it’s easier and healthier not to get their hopes up. Who would Calleida be without the curse, anyway?

Home: The Fynwynlynns live in a rustic little cottage on the edge of town, next to a bit of land where Oryxtheos raises chickens and grows herbs for a living. There is also a large ramshackle shed next door so Calleida can have a half-decent roof over her head when she turns into an elephant.

Birthday: Calleida’s true birthday is unknown, but her “Found Day” is celebrated on Raina 20.

Note: Calleida's transformations will be determined by RNG based on the covers of the main-series Animorphs books. In the rare case the cover features something other than an animal, Calleida will become a similar humanoid or mythical creature. Her form at the beginning of the RP is #38: Northern harrier (a bird of prey).
