Hiya, AChronum here! Although I'm relatively new to rping, I have plenty of writing experience and love trying new genres and styles. I absolutely love high magic fantasy RPs and am pretty much willing to do anything so long as I can create a charaxter, not play an existing one, and develop lots and lots of backstory! I'm perfectly comfortable with all mature themes as well, although smut for smut's sake is out of the question.

Danni could feel his chest constructing, his breaths coming shorter and shorter as Percy sat there curled up in Dorian's arms. He'd spilled his guts out, with Chase coming right behind him, said everything he could think of about the situation and he felt himself shaking like a leaf. Percy acted like he'd betrayed him and if Percy was hurt, did that mean they weren't friends? Did it mean he'd give back his gifts? Did it mean he'd go back to being Dorian's boyfriend only, instead of Danni's friends? Danni had lost relationships; it'd been scary and upsetting sure, but he'd moved on pretty quickly, but friendship break ups? Danni couldn't stop a sob from breaking out just at the thought of any of his friends leaving him. Danni didn't know what hurt meant or how to move past that; any time he'd had an issue, they'd fixed it immediately and Danni didn't know when they could fix it. He didn't like not being able to fix it.
He'd thought them meeting would fix it.
Milli-illi-illi-pede was brilliant and smart and so right. They definitely needed a whole chill out session, lots of cuddles piles with all of Excelsior and then some with just the sibs and then some with the whole family, Danni to beg Spicy not to hate him sessions, maybe a very, very, very long spa session, a whole three hour massage, and then maybe they could come back together. Danni just didn't see any other way that anyone could vibe out after this level of stress. This was world ending stuff, like supervillian level of stress, and Danni needed a whole week to unwind now.
“Wait, Spi-” The words died in Danni's throat, waiting to ask if they were okay, ask what hurt meant, ask when they could fix it, but the walls. Towering, icy things that crushed everyone together almost shoulder to shoulders with no room to breath, not room to stretch, no room to dance and Danni felt himself freeze for a moment. He was surrounded by people, not glass. He was surrounded by the carnival, not a game. He wouldn't wake up in that glass again, he wouldn't catch fire, he wouldn't burn everyone alive, he wouldn't burn everyone alive, he wouldn't…
The walls. Although his mind was drowning, his body wasn't. Nemo had put them face to face with situations that made them freeze up, that nearly killed them, that should have broken them but instead got him moving even when he was terrified because there was someone in worse condition that him. Ben, panicking, was suffering more. He knew it'd be just a bit up before he was free, that he would rocket into the endless expanse and breath again but Ben was trapped, so small and tiny and reeling with everything happening here. He was moving before he realized it and he saw Chase turn to his boyfriend but if he didn't solve this with Perxy, Danni couldn't fix things with Percy.
“I got ‘im. Work it out wit’ Spicy!” Danni choked out to Chase and he was next to Ben, snatching him up and launching them both into the sky, single minded going as high as he could until he stopped with the whole carnival spread out beneath them.
“Omg, Dee t'ank you so much!!! I didn't wanna get t'e boyf on fire for a second semester in a ro-” Danni was in the middle of a relieved sigh when Percy suddenly broke out into tears and Danni panicked. So he talked, so afraid that Percy would go back to being genuinely mean and withdrawn rather than his bestie. “Okay, Spicy, listen ta me, we weren't gunna ‘ave t'is ‘appen now ‘cause t'is is your birthday and you ‘ad a tough carnival time last year and we wanted ta try ta give ya t'e real experience you deserve and t'en it ended up like t'is so listen for just a second and like you can be spicy wit’ me after but I promise its a good t'in’? Cause like t'en ya can get a little closing or somwt'in’ like t'at, ya know? So Ben, Bennie Boi, Buggie Ben, Bed Bug I t'ink is one too - I almost crashed inta ‘im at t'e contest at some point and t'en I kidnapped ‘im at a grocery store when I was shoppin’ for t'e show and t'en we were just textin’ a while lot cause why not and t'sn ‘e blew me off when I made plans wit’ ‘im ta cook floor ‘ik and ‘an'out since ‘e's new ta t'e country and just fun ta chill wit’ and turns out ‘e blew me off ta ‘an'out wit’ Chase in t'is whooooole long road trip round Cali and t'e parks but I didn't know it was Chase for a ‘ot second. Actually, ‘ow long did it take ya ta start datin’ ‘im, Bennie boi? Ide but it was a couple o’ days and t'en I gotta a photo and I was like Sauna Boy?! cause at t'e party Chase danced wit’ me and we made plans ta go ta a sauna toget’er but t'en ‘e blew me off!” Danni whirled around and shook his finger at the pair of them.
“Now t'at I t'ink ‘bout it, ya bot’ blew me off! Separately! T'e ‘eck?! Well, ya did avoid goin’ ta a sauna so I didn't get upsetti but still, don't do t'at again!” Danni turned back to Percy as he continued. “So I know t'is kid as sauna boy, t'en you tell me ‘bout ‘ow you confessed ta Chase and t'en ‘e started shovin’ ya inta lockers and trash cans and bein’ a total villian, so t'en I found out t'at t'at same Chase was datin’ Ben so o’ course I'm like whoaaaaaaa ‘old t'e old ‘orsies ‘ere right? So I slid inta ‘is DMs and was like my guy, wtf? You're out wit’ t'is guy but ya dragged Spixy t'rough t'e mud? T'ey're bot’ t'e same person, but like not. T'ey're bot’ a smol and a cute and kinda lonely and t'at makes ya immediately wanna protect so ya gotta get some explainin’ goin’ ‘ere ‘cause t'is is one big o’ red flag, ya know? Sooooo Chase is talki’ ‘bout internizle ‘omophonia and t'en ‘e's explaini’ ‘bout gettin’ therapy ta be better ‘cause ‘e doesn't wanna be t'at person and I was like o perf! Like, obvibt'at doesn't fix anyt'in’ and ya still gotta like clear t'e air wit’ Spicy and maybe catch some ‘ands from Andy and Leah - actually probably catch some ‘ands from Andy, def - and t'en you can like, figure out ‘ow ta be part of t'e group. ‘E wants ta be better 100% but t'at obvi rests on ‘ow ‘e's gunna fix stuff wit’ you.”
“And I promise I wasn't just gunna… shove it in ya face. U was gunna sit ya down and ‘ave a whole convo leadin’ up ta it and we were gunna relax, ‘ave a spa day, and t'en I was gunna brin’ it up and let ya get Spicy and stuff and t'en see if ya wanted ta give Chase a chance ta ‘pologize for being a bully and give ya a little piece o’ mind ‘cause it def is still ‘urtin’ ya real bad and I just want ya ta feel better! You told me ‘bout t'is stuff and t'en I found t'e guy and I was like “I get new friend and I ‘elp my best friend! Double win!”
Amongst the concerns of the covens, of the curiosities uncovered, of the eclectic and ancient magics, the gong struck once more and the stillness that offered these pockets in the academy their moments of contemplation shattered like glass. Students seemed to pour from every corner, life suddenly filling the empty corridors and quiet spaces all at once, and in the hustle and bustle, the covens were released from their duties as they had yet another to attend -
It was time to meet their advisors. —
Prof. Gray - Chaos and Wild Magic Advisees: Jake, Cassie
Arcane glyphs and sigils traced deep blue walls in gold and bronze, candles and lanterns floating in constellation patterns near the ceiling cast warm light down on the room, and deep blue, red, and gold rugs tastefully covered the marble floor. Red plush couches with blue and gold throw pillows were arranged around a gathering of warm wood coffee tables, each stacked high with books and tomes that sometimes rearranged themselves when no one was looking. Bookshelf on bookshelf lined the walls, containing books and artifacts and the occasional fossil of the weird and weirder, and various urns and ceramic jugs were cramped under every available space. Several throw blankets covered the few individual chairs in the room and piles of candles seemed placed in every corner, burning without melting the wax.
In the center of all the chaos were two desks, two pens, each labelled for their respective audience.
I am writing about homework this year. I’m sorry to tell you I’m on vacation because I’ve been planning a nice visit for my dear husband all year — a vacation you probably can’t imagine. But that doesn’t mean I can’t teach. Below, you’ll find a file of your daily habits, mental, physical, and emotional reactions to managing your emotions during stressful times. With these exercises and the mantras in your file, I can track your progress and answer all your questions. If you need immediate assistance, contact Pixie. She is an old friend of mine; we went to high school together.
Prof. Grey
I am writig this letter in response to this year's course materials. I would very much like to be there and witness the success of the other Chaos witches, but unfortunately I am on extended leave this year, having dedicated the entire year to planning and organizing a fantastic vacation for my beloved husband, something you probably wouldn't understand. But that doesnt mean I wont be teaching you. At the end of this letter you will find a folder containing daily spells, exercises for the mind, body, and soup, and important exercises for controlling your emotions in stressful situations. With these tasks and the magic pen in your folder, Madam Bellafontaine, I will be following your progress and answering any questions you may have. If you need further asistance immediately, you can contact Pixie. She is an old friend of mine and we studied together in the past.

Prof. Gwynn - Illusions and Enchantments Advisees: Nicky, Barty, Finley + Dysphoria
Meggan Gwynn was hardly ever called by her legal name and she was referred to even less as Prof. Gwynn, even among her students. No, instead she was known simply as Pixie, half-mutant, half-fae, full time and active member of the X-Men, model, ex-girlfriend of Nico Minoru, op of Illyana Rasputina, and professor of illusions and enchantments at Strange Academy. Her preference as a teacher was hands-on, active problem solving. For instance, students were rarely welcomed into her office, instead ushered into a mystical danger room she had collaborated with Prof. Gray on.
But Agatha had told her that she didn’t have time to give her students a near death experience today, that the point of this was for them to meet their advisors and ask if they had any questions, blah blah blah - to be honest, Pixie had tuned her out after the first few sentences, instead thinking about everything she was missing on her Snikt feed at the moment, as her phone didn’t work outside of the AV club’s wifi cafe. Not even Limbo was this much of a wifi dead zone. She would have sent a quick message spell off to Max to complain, but he was out of range. Boo.
She was two students, despite being the advisor for three - Finley Darling was co-advised by Croan and would be meeting with him for this session. The other two she wasn’t incredibly thrilled about. They reminded her of her father. But at the same time, she was an X-Man - and that meant believing that people could change for the better.
“Hey guys!! Come on in, come on in - anyone peckish? I’ve got some crisps set out, and I’m making tea if you’d like any,” Pixie offered. Her office was at the top of a tower, the stone leading up to it a romantic soft pink. The main space was gaudy and tacky, pink furs dangling from the stone ceiling, the silver stones reminiscent of a disco ball glued to the walls, and pink furniture in the style of a retro dinner booth, curling into a semi-circle. A bright chandelier provided the majority of the lighting, continuing to bathe the space in a pink glow, and a spiraling staircase led further up in the tower, presumably to Pixie’s living quarters. She fluttered around, getting everything just into place, before facing her students with a beaming smile.
“Wow, I can’t believe it - the coven system, yay! You’ve all grown up so fast!” she gushed. “Today is just an informal hang - we can just vibe, I can answer any questions you all have, we can have some snacks, maybe film some things to post on Snikt later, and call it a day. Sound good?” she preened.
Prof. Ravoux - Healing and Necromancy Advisee: Connie
This year, Zéphyrine had only been allotted a single student from the coven system. But as luck would have it, her sole mentee was one of the most talented young witches she had had the good fortune to meet, in this century and any other. Connie was co-advised with Prof. Marino, but she knew her pupil would be coming to see her before too long.
Prof. Ravoux taught a variety of courses at Strange Academy, having resided in this swamp since long before the Sorcerer Supreme had even been able to mutter an incantation. And while her specialty was in brewing potions and herbs, creating tinctures and salves to push the balance of the scales of life and death, she also instructed students on innate transformations, having cursed herself with lycanthropy almost a lifetime ago.
Her office was on the grounds of the school, more of a hut, a small wooden cottage, than the traditional space the other professors preferred. It was surrounded by overgrowth, with a small pond near its base - the water coming from the very swamp Zéphyrine had called her home for so long, its mud having properties she still described as miraculous, forming the basis of most of her salves. Its exterior was decorated with bells, feathers, knots, and other such charms, and the occasional white chalk sigil, painstakingly refreshed each full moon. Muddied boots were left outside, along with torn clothing in need of mending, and empty jars, faded labels only hinting at what they once would have contained.
“Come in, mon amour,” Zéphyrine called out, as Connie approached. “‘Elp me wit’ t’ese, will you?” she instructed, not bothering to glance over her shoulder. When her student stepped over the threshold, a cleansing bell would be disturbed by the opening of the door, removing any negativity or ill-intent that could be brought into the swamp witch’s sanctum. The interior of the cottage was no less messy than its exterior - hundreds of bottles crammed onto rickety, wooden shelves, containing specimens and samples, potions and antidotes, salves and herbs - and a thousand other wonderful things. Books were open on every available surface, their pages muddied and dirtied, notes scrawled into the margins in Zéphyrine’s own short hand. It was her living space in addition to her office, yet rather than have any discernable bed, a pile of blankets and rags and clothing was strewn in one corner, more of a nest than anything else, covered with the thick, brown hair of a dog.
She wore a series of torn skirts, loose blouses, and tattered shawls, her hair a wild, tangled mess of curls - and despite the nature of her work, today was no different, as she set about skinning a rabbit. She nodded towards Connie, indicating for her to join her in the task, as another one sat there unattended. “Leave t’e foot as it is - we’ll make a c’arm for you out of it. T’ere’s a bad wind in the air.”
Professor Varn Croan Advisees: Annika, Finley
Croan’s office offered little variation from what people would expect. A stunning floor to ceiling wall of windows with a small set opening as a door for Croan’s late night escapades. A heavy wooden desk, flanked by bookshelves and tall gothic candelabras that burned with smokeless light, was framed perfectly in the and a set of black leather chairs faced it. Two statues, towering representations of Italian art from centuries ago, watched the room with a dedicated glint that spoke volumes of their care.
Croan sat behind his desk, one hand at his temple to hopefully curb the ache his coven and their theatrics offered him. The Macleod was annoying but useful, the Winnel slow but gifted, and the last one… It was a rare night he felt his vampiric nature so dreadfully tested. It’d been some time since his last hunt, let alone feeding. He would slake his thirst this evening however, the return of the students certainly assured him of that. The… thing steeped in wild magic exhausted him to no end and Croan knew it would take far more than the normal amount to keep his vampire from tearing Jake’s throat out. However, these thoughts turned towards the present and true as the doors opened and his advisees arrived.
“Good afternoon. Mx. Darling and Dysphoria, you will also fall under the jurisdiction of Ms. Gwynn so please feel free to address her with any questions you may have as well. You may consider me as a resource for your development of blood magic.” Croan informed the duo, direct and to the point. His attention turned to Annika next. “And as for you, Ms. Hawthorne, I shall be a resource in your advancement of shadow magic. Should either of you find your skills faltering in your advancement of your coven’s responsibility, I am available during most afternoons for a brief conversation. How did your first evaluations go? You are both in the same coven, yes?”
Professor Mikkail Genesis Advisees: Callighan, Willow
Despite knowing their way to Mikkail’s sitting room, they had been instructed that morning via letter to instead meet their advisor at the observatory - a specialized tower at the edge of the forest that shimmered a faint blue during the day but displayed a gorgeous aurora around it at night. It was nearly 1,000 stairs in total, long and curling along the inside of the building with a wickedly painful drop down the center. There was evidence of a railing once but it had either crumbled away or collapsed out of poor maintenance. However, the door at the top permitted entrance into one of the most magical places in the school: a room that would offer you a full look at the night sky around you from any point in time and any point in space. It was a gorgeous thing, a magical artifact uncovered ages ago from a place between time itself and Mikkail loved it dearly.
The professor arrived shortly after his coven diligently pursued their quarry with single minded focus. He’d felt a pang of homesickness for a place he’d not seen in nearly a thousand years. The sky of his home filled the observatory, gaseous colors of purple and red and white curling in the sky and constellations consumed by time and consigned to memory for all eternity winked at him. He ached to soar in the heavy skies once more, ached to feel the blistering vapors across his scales and sing in unison with his weyr. Those days were long gone and the pain of memory long since faded into a dull ache, but still he yearned for something he would never see again. It shrouded him like a cloak, even as his advisees entered the room, and his smile was tinged with yearning and his eyes clouded in nostalgia.
“Now, it has only been but a matter of moments my friends.” Mikkail laughed as he crossed the room, clasping both their hands tightly for a moment. “So I do not expect you to need another introduction, though should you be interested I can certainly put on an entertaining act. We should have a typewriter for you in your room shortly, my dear Willow, so please be at ease and rely on your friends a little longer. I know it may be odd that I am both your mentor and coven head but I certainly could not relinquish my favorite student and I believe that no one else can quite help you like I can, Willow. So, while I am your coven head, my capacity as your mentor is more to guide you in your development of your magical craft, help make sense of the mysteries and concerns that magic brings, in any which way I may.”
Professor Sariel Marino Advisees: Rohan, Franklin
Unlike with Finley and Annika, Sariel snatched both Rohan and Franklin by the ear before they could escape. “Since you two are with me in both coven and mentee, then you may as well come to my office upstairs now. We’ll get this knocked out and you can be on your way to wrestle with your friend, drink, or make drama however you’d care to while I am not there. Come along, we won’t have all day!” Sariel released them before leading them back out of the endlessly convoluted mess that kept the entrance to the Neverish protected.
On the second story, a door tucked away in a far corner could have easily been overseen as a broom closet. However, as Sariel inserted a key and her magic flowed through it, gears in the wall shuddered to life and the clinking and grinding noise echoed down the hallway. The door clicked open moments later and warm afternoon light and bird song floated out. Inside the left wall was all glass, overlooking the forest below, and a long table crafted from a lightning struck tree dominated the center. Twelve chairs sat around it and the walls were covered in gorgeous mountain sceneries from across the globe. Each one was oil on canvas and different music played softly from each one.
“Welcome to my home away from home. A little break from the madness.” Sariel waved at the table, indicating for them to take a seat. At the far end was a small drink cart, Sariel pouring herself a glass of bourbon. “In the meantime, would either of you care for a drink? I understand that you may not quite qualify for these; however, you are to experience the wonders and horrors of dimensional magics and I feel that itself deserves a kinder touch. With that being said…” Sariel pushed the drink cart over, a glass and bronze affair, and settled at the head of the table.
“Here, we are to discuss your projects and efforts pertaining to your magical development. Yes, the coven challenges are there to offer you an obstacle and a goal all in one; however, developing the talents and skills required will demand efforts outside the challenge. So, what thoughts, questions, concerns, or any other pressing matters would you care to discuss?”
Danni watched his brother, distracted as he was. Dee was a little out of it this morning at breakfast, getting ready, much quieter than normal as Danni and April screamed and hollered across the house, chased after each other and the pets, clung to their parents, and all around made nuisances of themselves. Danni considered his options out here – Dee wouldn’t open up unless he was made to and he would be very… upsetti if Danni pried while everyone was around so there really was only one option. It was a little nuclear, but he couldn’t phase into Dorian’s body and give him a little space to work it out like Dee could so he’d do the next best thing: annoy the bejeezes out of him Danni stuck his finger in his mouth and got it really wet before striking. There was nothing like a wet willie to break the funk out of someone! At least if Dee was mad at him, he could always cry whine his way back into his good mood.
Unfortunately, Danni missed as Dee shifted with the arrival of Percy and it hit his shirt instead. “Omg Spicy! You’re ‘ere! Did ya see my text? It seems like a lotta people didn’t but I am gunna be nice and not cry about it! I am much more mature and reasonable now.” Danni insisted, only sniffling a little as he wiped the rest of his spit on Dorian’s shirt. He took in Percy critically, hand on his chin as he pondered, taking a sip of hot chocolate, offering some to Amelie, and then sipping at it again. He nodded his approval. “You did so great! I love t’is fit, Spciy! Omg, I’mma cry; I’m so proud! Danni could feel the affectionate little bubbles so he pulled out a handkerchief, embroidered with his initals finally, and pinched both of Percy’s cheecks as he continued to fuss and coo over his clothes. He only stopped when almost a literal lightbulb popped over his head.
“Ooooooh, yeah. Rillie t’anks for remindin’ me! I also got presents for ya! T’e green box wit’ t’e leaves is anot’er outfit, but it’s a good spring-summer one. Ya might want ta put like, a black shirt underneat’. It’s got a little bit of mesh so if you aren’t feelin’ super comfy, you can layer like a black at’letic shirt underneat’!” Danni pulled it out of his bag, plopping it in Percy’s hands. “And t’en t’e black one wit’ t’e red stripes is a new swimsuit! It’s a full bodysuit style, black wit’ t’e red stripes on t’e sides, sups stylish and shouuuld be comfy for ya. It does stop like bicep and upper t’igh levels t’ough, but Dee’ll love ti for sure!” Danni plopped the second box on top of the first.
“And t’en loooook at t’is!” Danni raised his shirt and showed off his naval piercing. “ I actually went and did it! Pops said I can’t get anyt’in’ custom or like a new piece for t’ree mont’s ‘cause ‘e wants ta make sure I actually like it but like I keep tellin’ Pops its not just a phaaase. And ‘onestly, it looks real good so I want more. I t’ink next is my ears and t’en maybe my nose? Tongue? Idk, ‘aven’t decided yet but I’m def gunna rock it! We me t’ese real nice people and I only cried a little! You should come wit’! I saw ‘ow you were t’inkin’ ‘bout piercin’ when I brought it uuuup!” Danni sang at the end, giving Percy a wink before whirling to Leah.
Danni gasped at the absolute violence Leah unleashed. “Omg, you missed us?! I missed you too!!!!!” Danni sobbed out and threw himself at Leah, wrapping her up in a hug and careful only to grab onto clothing. “I know we ‘ung out kinda recent, but like I need ta find ya a phone you can use so we can stay in touuuuch! ‘ow am I supposed ta bot’er you wit’ all my love and affection if I can’t reaaaach you whenever I want! I mean, I could get Papa ta port me ta you, but t’at might get him a little upsetti spaghetti if I just use ‘im for transport all t’e time or like, a faster snail mail t’in, ya know? And I finally get ta see t’e sword!!! Gimme, gimme, gimme, gimme, gimme, gimme, gimme, gimme, gimme, gimme, gimme, gimme, gimme. I wanna ‘old it since ya wouln’t brin’ it ta our ‘an’out!” Danni tried to reach for the sword, but he couldn’t reach around Leah and grab the sword at the same time so he took a step back and made grabby hands in her direction.
And then the world went dark, a voice popped up out of nowhere, and Danni panicked. The bubbles from earlier hadn’t fully settled, people coming in and getting him excited over and over again, and the sudden, drastic spook was too much. “AHHHHHH!” Danni screamed, the bubble bursting as he did and he could suddenly see fire all over him. Amelie had climbed out of her sling, using his shoulder as a balancing point and wings spread out, hissing and growling furiously at Chase and puffed herself up even as the fire licked at her belly and up her legs. . “ Omg, omg, someone put me out! Omg, no take Amelie and t’en put me out! I can’t do t’is again! Spicy, stay away! T’ese clothes aren’t wort’ burnin’! Rillie, Beaaanie, ‘eeeeeeeeelp!” Danni flailed about, starting to lift off, then running around like a chicken with his head cut off in an attempt to get away from Percy.
Location: Camp Lava Lake Campground Skills: N/A Outfit: Outfit
By the time Marco rang the breakfast bell, Aster had put himself back together. It was fine, this was fine, he was fine (well, better the fine. Perfect really), and even this stupid little camp was fine. Aster helped bring food out and got the table laid out, doing his best to set it nicely with the quality of supplies, and waited for the rest to swarm. Aster cut himself a piece of quiche and a piece of bacon joined, toast and milk alongside it. He settled in at the table, quite content to ignore the ramblings at the table when allegorical came up and the black cat thought it amusing to scare the table.
“Perhaps it's a more pleasant way to go than Dobb's killer. At least you may enjoy it.” Aster rolled his eyes at Demi's antics, alert cutting into the quiche and savoring it in small bites, an appreciative sigh between each. Aster had certainly enjoyed better breakfasts, but it was nice to have something warm and pleasant to break up the hardships he'd experienced so far. “I told Marco, but I will be overseeing water sports during this trial we are experiencing. And Zeke, I found proper cleaning supplies in the kitchen so I'll get things in decent shape right after this. It won't be comfortable, but at least we won't die of malaria or some other gods forsaken disease.”
The first semester of his third year at Margaret Carter certainly exposed Danni to the thrills and terrors of super hero work better than the entirety of the first two years and Danni was so, so excited to see what this semester had in store for them. How would it one up a supervillian, death of a timeline, winning the Contest of Champions, and returning Genosha to the mutant people? There was only one way to find out!
As with every time they go back to school, Danni was a scattered mess the night before. Running around with manic energy, one wrong tone away from full on hysterics, searching high and low for something he’d just packed away and forgotten, and in everyone’s hair as much as possible. His invaded everyone’s personal space far more than normal, touching and hugging and bothering even after he’d been told over and over again to calm down, and once he’d laid down for bed, even Amélie bit and head butted him until he actually laid down, stopped rolling, and settled on his chest, rumbling contently to lull him to sleep.
After he’d gotten his coffee the next morning, he’d been an excited bundle of energy again, pulling people into spontaneous dances and singing at the top of his lungs as he got ready for their first day. Black leather and layers for the cold, sparkle all up and down the arms and back of the jacket, multiple necklaces and a few rings to highlight everything, and knee high combat boots with wool socks. Danni was determined not to have a repeat of last semester - where he’d set Spicy on fire, nearly ruined Dee’s birthday, and nearly exploded in flames when he’d been startled - so he packed an extra can of EZ Fire Spray in his day bag just to be safe. An excited Danni was a dangerous Danni so better to be prepared (and if it was actually Pops who pointedly looked at Danni as he put in the extra can, who would know?)
It wasn’t until they were just about ready to portal out and Appa presented homemade, intricately piped cookies of themselves that Danni finally suffered his biannual ugly cry. It wasn’t that he hated going to school. His siblings were there, his friends were there, he was learning to be a hero but. It wasn’t Pops’s fond exasperation at whatever pranks the siblings tried that day. It wasn’t impromptu lip-sync battles with Papa when he had a show in a few days. It wasn’t cooking side by side and swapping terrible puns with Appa. It wasn’t story time with Pa after a trip, going on about all the strange things he’d seen. It wasn’t family game nights and the smell of fresh coffee and cinnamon rolls. It wasn’t French Quarter, all friendly faces and laughter, of sad times with lots of help, with a community that cared and loved everyone in it as best it could.
It wasn’t home.
So Danni sobbed an entire semester’s worth of tears. He clung to his parents and only cried harder when Papa joined in, swapping laughter and sobs in equal measure as Amélie voiced her concern loudly and aggressively forcing her way in to grumble and rumble and screech as the water on his face. It was gross and snotty and relieving as all the pent up energy broke loose in the tidal wave and Danni had to take another half hour to get the redness around his eyes under control, touch up his make up, and feel a little more settled in his skin before they portaled over. And even with all that, Danni was still a little clingy and teary eyed as his parents popped back across the country and had to wave air into his eyes to dry them.
Still, he snapped a photo of the three siblings after he'd calmed down and sent it out to the Excelsior and the Round Table group chats.
Danni: (Attachment - DAD in their dorm, beaming at the camera while pressed cheek to cheek) Danni: Hitting the carnival!!!!! Danni: Hot choci with the siblings Danni: And then we're on the way for priiiiiizes Danni: Amélie also misses her friends!!!! Danni: (Attachment - Amélie in her onesie and in her carrying strap across Danni's chest)
Danni: Hewwo! Danni: It's your favorite! Danni: (Attachment - Amélie in her onesie and in her carrying strap across Danni's chest) Danni: And me! Danni: (Attachment - DAD in their dorm, beaming at the camera while pressed cheek to cheek) Danni: We're roaming around! Danni: Don't be shy!!!! Danni: Come say hi!!! Danni: Gunna get hot choco first! Danni: :D
Unfortunately, Danni's hot chocolate stacking faced a unique challenge he failed considering: Amélie. Taking after her daddy, Amélie loved snacking and marshmallows and cookies and sprinkles all counted as a snack. Anytime Danni's stack got high enough for Amélie to reach without leaving the comfort of her swaddle, Amélie bit into his creation and leveled it flat again. Danni tried raising it up, holding it further away, moving it as he built but either he spilled the toppings or Amélie got them. Finally he pouted and resorted to snacking on them himself, Amélie's pleased grumbles soothing the sting of losing.
“Well, I’d say we need a rematch, but I'm not leavin’ my baby behind so its a moot point. Unless Dee can do sonet'in’, you're t'e ‘ot choco champion t'is year.” Danni sighed dramatically, taking a sip of his drink and letting Amélie sniff at it. Amélie whined and lapped at it, letting out a happily little chirp. Danni fished out his phone as it buzzed and gasped with a bit of the drink sloshing over.
“Wha… I t'ink I'm hallucinatin’. Omg, someone do t'e eye t'ingy on me. Gotta make sure I don't ‘ave a ‘ead injury! Actually on second t'ough, everyone be proud I ‘ad a second t'ought, maybe don't considerin’ what ‘appened last time. But we gotta go ‘elp Spicy! ‘e's gotta be dyin’ or somet'in’. Do you t'ink ‘d ‘as cancer?! Do you t'ink ‘e's got pnuemoania?! Or maybe, maybe ‘e's ‘avin’ a reaaaaaally bad ‘air day. Omg, omg, omg we ‘afta-”
Danni: Where u at? Danni: We don't know where u are! Danni: R u okay? Danni: R u hurt? Danni: Is ur hair really bad? Danni: I can bring a hat!
Danni fired back a slew of texts back singled handedly and looked up at the sound of an unfamiliar voice complimenting his sister's hair cut. “Omg it looks so good right?! Everyone loved it when we revealed it t’ough, like, it def needed another touch up cause I did it at 6am and no one should be functioning at 6am but it looks so goooooood and I am very proud of myself for it.” Danni cut in, puffing up at the compliment to his work. “Oh, wait! I know you! You were at t'e party! ‘eeeeeeey, what up? ‘ow you doin’? I love t'e vibe ‘ere, sups casual, sups sleek like classy vaca, ya know? ‘ave you met Amélie yet? You can pet ‘er but she does get a little snippy when she eats so probs wait til we're done wit’ t'e chocolate. We're ‘bout ta go on a rescue mission, wanna come? Idk where Spicy is t'ough but ‘e used emjos and normally ‘e texts like an old man so t'at means its a real problem, like a wardrobe malfraction or a terrible ‘air day! It's t'e most important t'in’ we could do all year! Oh, ‘ello btws. I'm Danni, t'is is Dee, don't t'ink we actually met!”

One fateful night all through the house, not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse. At least, that’s how it should have been. Instead, 12 year old Danni Kingston was creeping through his home, double socked and all in black. Surrounded by glittering baubles he and his parents picked out and strung up while dancing to every Christmas song known to man, why was Danni, a long time resident of the Kingston household, creeping through his family’s home like a common burglar, phone in hand and already recording, at 2am on Christmas?
He’s out to prove Santa is real.
There were always presents under the tree from Santa and Danni knew all sorts of people who could do cool shit. Maxie could teleport and Papa could kiki with ghosts and Pops started someone’s heart just by laying his hands on her shoulders and all sorts of other cool shit! Why couldn’t there be a mutant that moves really fast and likes to give toys? He’d show that bitch he’s real and make her say sorry for calling his Pops a liar.
He froze when he heard the faintest creak coming from around the corner and strange shuffling noises. He stifled a giggle but couldn’t help the pleased jig and all but skipped to the corner. Sure, the noises were a little weird now, like something clicked and then another nose that sounded like shampoo coming out of a bottle and a weird groan but maybe Santa used hair products or something. Moving that fast probably gave you a cowlick between every house!
Danny leapt around the corner, camera up and recording, but instead of a jolly, white haired bear in his living room, all he found was Papa and Pops wrestling. Naked. With Pop’s hand over Papa’s mouth and moving funny. Danni frowned at the sight. It took a brief second or two to process, and then it hit him.
He didn’t realize he was screaming until, in a flurry of limbs, Pops managed to snag a blanket and cover them. He didn’t realize something was burning until the smoke alarms went off. He didn’t realize it was his phone until he felt his palms start to blister. He dropped it and stared at the pile of melted plastic. Then at his hands because they were still on fire.
What happened that night was a desperate attempt to find clothing, burned eyes as Danny tried to cover them when Papa stood up in his birthday suit, and expensive damages as James chased a panicked Danny around the house to try and put him out. Danny fondly remembered it as F-Day: Fucking, Fucked, and Fires!
The adopted son of James and Casper Kingston, Danny was never a child without love. Although born in Genosha, his earliest memories are of New Orleans after James and Casper moved there following the collapse of Genosha. Pops worked at an auto shop, the strong order of oil caked into Danny’s early memories, and baby Danny was always dazzled and amazed at the outfits his Pape put on and the glitter, shimmer, and glamor of his shows. He remembers sometimes when Papa would be him because Pops had a guest at home and he always terrorized the backstage areas if they had one, wearing Papa’s feather boas and shoes even if they were too big. And when Pops would come pick him up, the half hearted scolding was seconds before the fond sigh, the quiet click of the camera, and a kiss on the forehead.
Although he was an only child, and he made sure to milk that he was with, Dorian was such a constant presence in his life, he felt like a sibling rather than just a friend. They’d watch Saturday morning cartoons, playing superheroes as their favorite show, She-ra and the Princess of Power, played in the background. When Danny whined at his parents to put him in dance classes so he could be a performer like Papa, his first solo performance was danced to the theme song and he demanded Dorian be there.
Of course, Danny was an impulsive wreck, moving through interests like clothes. One week it was painting, the next it was roller skating, and the cycle continued until he stumbled into cooking. The truth of the matter was, his family wasn’t known for their cooking skills. Pops had picked some up to feed the family and Papa wasn’t allowed in the kitchen unsupervised after the cupcake incident but sometimes Danny was craving a specific food and when he was, everything else was terrible and deserved to be trashed because it wasn’t the food so he decided he learn how to do it himself. As is expected when a 10 year old decides to cook without consulting his parents, the end result was an absolute mess but Danny had a blast through the entire process, even when half of it ended up on the wall. He was then also promptly banned from being in the kitchen unsupervised but got that lifted as he grew into the art.
Before his mutation presented itself, he planned to become a chef with his own shows and restaurants. He started his own Filterella, KingstonsKitchen, and grew it into a Snikt! and has a decent following that he likes to randomly pop on live with. He also posts random updates about his day under #shitIdo for easy filtering because he likes to and he finds it fun to include more people in his life (hear about how awesome and pretty he is).
Although he knew his family was wary about the x-men, he was always a little jealous when Dorian talked about his time there. He got to go to a hero school and Danny was stuck in normal New Orleans. They’d had dreams of being superheroes together when they were kids but between Danny’s struggle to stick with his interests, Pop’s general disapproval of superheroes, and a million flashier, easier things to get into, the interest faded until F-Day. His powers presented before Dorian’s and the old dream of theirs seemed realistic again. Sure he teased Dorian about getting powers first and sure he had to twist Pop’s arm to get him to agree (James barely lasted a day of tears and the cold shoulder before he relented) but with their approval, Dorian and Danny headed to Avenger’s Academy, bright eyed and bushy tailed, together.
Yes, it was hard and yes, it was a culture shock and yes, he called his parents sobbing to come pick him up because he missed home more times than he could count on one hand, but now, he's fully committed to rocking this Superhero thing. Superheroics are super interesting, the normal classes are bearable, and getting to set things on fire and looking fly as fuck doing it was right up his alley. Kicking butt in the Contest of Champions and taking top spot would just be the perfect thing to take home to Pops and show him this was exactly where Danny was supposed to be..
As Annika and Frankie completed the last pieces of their anchor and blood poured into the artifact, Sariel grinned - a feral, sharp thing. The heart beat softly, each contraction giving off a faint blue pulse of static. Magic stirred deep beneath the floor, shifting like a living creature, and the words that screamed out of every fissure and pore of reality itself tore at the edges of their consciousness. Rohan, Finley, and Disphoria felt it rattle their bones and felt like their heads would explore, Annika's ears began to bleed, but Frankie?
Frankie's magic cracked in response, lightning racing through his whole body and lighting up his system much like Sariel's.
Their Professor was electrified just the same and slammed the beating heart into the safe box, sealing it shut with thunder and lightning, and spinning the table wildly. Arcs of Sariel's lightning slammed into each of her students and as it spun, it drew out long threads of their magic and pulled it into the table, spinning them into fine, golden thread. It seemed to last for eternity, the moment of howling words, crazier magic, and two who shifted from skeletal to fleshy and everything in between, until finally, Sariel spoke the same words rolling across the plane, sharpened them into a single fissure, and with a horrifying scream, slammed it into the table, forcing it back into the ground.
Sariel panted, pushing her hair back from her face. Her hair was frazzled and her clothes in disarray and still she grinned, pride and feral enthusiasm on full display. “And now you are bound, to here and each other. You've done well, but I believe that is enough for one day. Let's get you all back and tomorrow, tomorrow, we will make our first dive!”
AA, sometime between the contest and the winter break, evening hours...
Cold mud swallowed the last of the daylight as the sun slipped beneath the horizon. Darkness settled quickly, dragging winter's bite across the campus until the puddles stiffened into thin crusts of ice. It was the kind of night meant for blankets and cocoa, a pleasant, warm sort of hibernation. Absolutely not time outdoors.
A perfect full moon hung over the school, bright and bold where no moon should have been. The calendar swore tonight belonged to the new moon. Which meant the moon was no moon at all.
Someone was batsignalling the logo of Kingston's Kitchen into the sky.
Danni whistled, camera safely disassembled and packed away in the bag on one shoulder and his tripod tucked under the other. Balls of fire, no larger than a baseball, spun lazily around him in an effort to keep the chill out off him. His outfit was certainly a little thin for the season, but was the cold really a problem when he could conjure fire with a thought? Yes, yes it was and Danni was still on the edge of shivering. Breath was suffering and all that. The photos came out perfectly, though, so his suffering was worth it.
He was totally shoving his hand's down Dee's shirt.
Giggling to himself at the thought, Danni glanced up. And then again. And then came to a complete stop. He could have swore the moon was in the sky - tbh, Danni didn't really pay attention to it unless he needed it and then it was always highly inconvenient whichever phase it was in. But he definitely didn't remember a Kingston's Kitchen thumbnail phase. It took a while of Danni just squinting at the sky before the curiosity got the best of him. He did take a beat to flip out his phone, take a quick selfie with it, and then fire off off to the fam before he shrugged and beeline it for whoever the light was coming from.
HotShot who? Kingston's Kitchen to the rescue!
It was faint, but the occasional snowflake made the beam of light traceable. One look would reveal that the light was coming from somewhere on the bottom floor of the Stark Hall. And a moment's thought would allow anyone to connect the dot to the cafeteria's kitchen.
As Danni approached through the otherwise empty mess hall, he could see the lights were on behind the kitchen's door. At least, there was an absence of any bad smell, suggesting that whatever needed the attention of a culinary superhero may not be beyond salvage yet.
Then he peered inside.
The scene looked like someone set off a bomb in there. He could see no less than two bowls of dough, one in which the yeast has died before producing but a bubble. The second one the author obviously overcompensated, and the mass has left the bowl and was halfway onto the worktop. Next to that tragedy was a metal bowl with what looked like stillborn meatloaf.
There was a tin with what he could surmise was supposed to be the final products, which could perhaps pass for a mini-pizza - if one was poor and the country was at war. A second tin was located upside down on the floor, its former contents next to it, on the counter, and one was stubbornly clinging to the floor.
The perpetrator of this massacre was hiding, but a soft sob gave her away. Vicky was hiding behind the kitchen island, sitting on the floor curled up to a ball, with more of the filling stuck in her hair. As Danni approached, she looked up to him, her face a mix of misery and shame.
Her voice cracked as she spoke. "...help..."
The scene was straight out of the creepy horror games Danni refused to play with Dee because he always lied about the jump scares! Or made new ones! And there was one game Dee was actually the killer in but didn't tell Danni until he was murdering him! And now, he was willing walking through a spooky kitchen. Danni bounced on his heels for half a second, debating, but it was a kitchen. Danni knew how to deal with problems there. Even a spooky ghost couldn't get him without a frying pan in the face.
If Danni bolted across the dark cafeteria, no one would know, but he gasped at the murder scene inside. Dough, both dead and begging to be murdered, waited for him, mystery meat in a loafish shape, and wet cardboard. "Uuuuuuuuh." Danni felt his mouth fall open but couldn't bring himself to shut it. He nearly missed the tiny plea for help. If he hadn't carefully snooped for more, Danni may have missed her all together.
"Um. Yes, okay. Def need some 'elp 'ere, but uh, I t'ink I need a little more ta go on, 'onestly. I can't even really..." Danni shrugged off his bag, placed it on an opposite counter, considered, and placed it as far away as he could. He propped the tripod against the wall nearby before he settled down on the floor across from Vicky. "So, we're tryin' some new t'in's, I love t'is, I love t'is for ya, but um, I'm gettin' t'e vibe it ain't really goin' to 'ot so 'ere I am! You're best cookin' friend in t'e whole wide world! Danni offered little jazz hands with a big smile. He scooted forward until their knees were touching.
Vicky winced when Danni admitted to not even being able to identify what the end result of her effort was supposed to be. "They... were supposed to be tacos." She enlightened him, reaching up to pluck a piece of filling from her hair. All she got was an even bigger clump of messy hair and tacky fingers. "You see, I try to make something for the family every year, but- It's like I'm cursed! this shouldn't be this hard!" she would be crying if she could. "I even followed a recipe, but the first dough just refused rise, so I thought 'more yeast' and it flooded out and I tried to contain it and thenItrippedAndHitTheTinAndItWentFlyingEverywhere." she forced out, growing quieter toward the end as her cheeks turned crimson.
“Oh! Well, t’at’s easy enough ta fix, but I t’ink we need ta get you all cleaned up first!” Danni pulled Vicky to her feet, left her at the sink for a moment, and snagged the chair from the cafeteria office around the back. He bundled her into the chair with something quick to drink and whistled as he dragged over the trash can, gloving up before picking out the bits and lumps of filling out of her hair. “Deeeef need ta shampoo and condition t’e ‘eck outta your ‘air after t’is. Maybe we can go ta t’e salon back ‘ome. Needa ‘ave a relaxin’ time after everyt’in’, ya know? Plus, Papa said t’ey swapped color brands and t’at means I gotta check out t’ere reds. Oh, ‘old on, t’at one – ‘ow did it even get t’ere?” Danni dug a ittle deeper, finding a bit that had somehow made it down to the roots.
“Gotta say, t’ough. Not t’e worst ‘splosion I’ve ever seen ina kitchen. First time I tried doin’ somet’in’ fancy wit’ puffed pastry, I made everyt’in’ up and was super sad t’at t’e pastry wasn’t like a big ol’ ball so I got t’e air pump for like bike and ballons, ya know, and boom pastry everywhere!” Danni laughed. “I cried for like t’ree hours ‘cause I was makin’ it for Pop’s birthday and t’en I was also sticky and it was just a bad time all around. I t’ink we did get a picture or two, if ya ever wanna see!” After a few more minutes of fussing and checking, Danni patted Vicky on the shoulders.
“All clear! Why don’t ya wash your ‘ands and your face and we’ll get rolling on round 2!”
The fact that Danni thought he could lift Victoria to her feet without throwing out his back did bring a little amusement to the otherwise miserable evening. Not about to let her culinary savior suffer a burst disc, she helped him sling her weight up.
Then the mortification intensified a hundredfold. She wasn’t… pampered… like this science… ever.
She was so taken aback by Danni apparently taking it upon himself to fix her hair that she didn’t even manage to protest, much less inform him that she had a function for that until he was halfway done. She was about to do just that when he busted out his story. She straightened up and gave him a suspicious look. ”You. Danni ‘Kitchen’ Kingston. You tried to inflate puff pastry?” She did a double take. ”Oh, pics or didn’t happen. Though if you want to compare disasters, this is last year’s pancakes. Or the attempt, at least.” She slid her phone over the countertop towards him, displaying a familiar android that was, for the lack of a better word, egged.
She splashed water over her face and hands, and was ready to follow Danni’s every command, when she looked over at the leftovers of her attempts that they might have salvaged. ”Umm, your whelp’s helping herself to the rest of the filling.” Vicky skipped over, lowering herself to be eye level with the little magical lizard. ”Hey, lil’ one. Stop.” She got a tiny puff of smoke and flame in her face as an answer. Vicky giggled at that, but only until Amélie grabbed the edge of the bowl and dragged it away faster than a cat. ”Oi! We needed that!”
“Hmmm?” Danni asked, only half listening as he dug through dry food stock. He looked back over at Vicky and brightened as he saw his baby being the menace that she was. “Oh, idk what you made, but we're just gunna start fresh. For one, if you're makin’ tacos we're usin’ masa, not flour. We'll roll t'em out real nice and pop t‘em in oil rat'er t'an usin’ flour and yeast and all t'at jazz. A bit more kneedin’ but meh, corn tortillas are waaaaay better for tacos in my opinion. Not so great for a burrito, def agree wit’ t'e flour on t'at, but tacos are suppose ta be street food so we make t'em street food sized! And Amélie needs a little boost anyways - she put up wit’ my photoshoot so she deserves a little treat, dontcha baby?” Danni rubbed her back affectionately as she devoured Vicky's earlier handiwork, only a little grumble of appreciation for warm hands his acknowledgement.
“Okay, so for tortillas we need a cast iron skillet though I can make a regular pan work, some veggie oil, masa, and… and… and…” Danni stared at the fourth finger he'd preemptively ticked off as he thought. “Salt! T'at's what it is! Kosher, preferably. T'en I need a toritlla press, t'ough a rollin’ pin'll work, and a brush. And t'em for t'e fillin’, we should get somet'in’ nice and smoot’ and a little fatty, ya know? Well, actually… ‘ow much time ya got? ‘Cause really, we should slow cook some meat, but we can go t'e quick and dirty way wit’ ground beef or chicken. Tastes good still, but definitely misses t'e deeper flavor carnitas getcha. Ya said you're cookin’ for your family? Good on you. Love t'at for ya; I love cookin’ for t'e fam too!”
”Well,I hope she doesn’t mind habañeros…” Vicky raised an eyebrow at the dragon, as if daring her to eat all of it. Then again, a creature that breathes fire might just relish in it?
It stung a little for her earlier effort to be completely dismissed out of hand, but she supposed it was going nowhere. Danni then fired off the contents of what she considered to be half of a professional kitchen, which reminded her of something. ”Well, you’re the expert. What you say we need, we get. My time - and wallet I guess - are at your disposal, Master Kingston.”
Before they went, Vicky swung by her dorm to get changed and have the nanites that made her hair shake off the rest of the mess, and then she grabbed four boxes wrapped in colorful paper and headed for Danni’s room. When the door opened, she waved one box in front of him. ”Merry christmas, Danni.”
“Nooope, t'at's wierd, just Danni! I don't wanna be in charge of not'in’.And we'll go splitsies. Pops let me ‘ave like a thousand to spend and I ‘aven't done anyt'in’ wit’ it so far so really, I'm chill ta buy it all. How much can t'is stuff be?” Danni's nose wrinkled as he picked up all his stuff, disposing of Vicky's ill-advised attempts in the disposal, cooing as he cleaned up Amélie's snout, and curling her back into his bag so she wouldn't get cold on the walk. Fire flickered back to life as he dashed back to his room while Vicky grabbed something from her room. It worked perfectly cause this shirt had a lot of sheer and he always got looks outside of the French Quarter strolling around with fire in his hand. Something about fire hazards and danger.
He settled Amélie in his bed, tucked in just how she liked it, and swapped out for a long sleeve shirt, a comfy coat, and proper winter boots. It didn't get this cold often but Danni didn't like the cold so he was always prepared! He whistled as he headed back out to meet Vicky, startled at how quick she was, and going cross eyed as she waved a present in front of him. He reached out hesitantly, glanced over his shoulder to make sure the room was empty, and then eagerly accepted it. “Really? For little ol’ me? T'at's so nice! But um…” Danni scuffed his foot against the floor and looked anywhere but at Vicky.
“I didn't know we were doin’ presents ‘cause Rillie and you aren't really like… friends, right now? And t'e siblings gotta stick toget'er, ya know? Uuuugh, t'is is t'e worst.” Danni whined. “Okay, okay. I'mma… one sec.” Danni stashed the present somewhere secret in the room and then ran out again. “Okay, okay, okay. Rillie shouldn't see t'at for a bit, even by accident, while I get it figured out and all t'at. I'm def buyin’ all t'e ingredients l. Gotta find anot'er present for ya too. Got some ideas so I'll talk ta Pa and see if ue can ‘elp get t'ese t'oughts outta my ‘ead and out ‘ere. A little thick up ‘ere, ya know?” Danni rapped his knuckles on the side of his head and laughed.
“T'ough, I'm curious. What's up with you and Rillie? I only really got Rillie's side but wit’ t'e contest and C.A.G.E. and post-murder attempt, we ‘aven't really hung out much. So catch me up t'e drama! Its a long walk ta t'e store.”
”Oh… I actually have something for all three of you. Mind if I drop the lot off? I also have Percy’s on me. I don’t really know if I’ll manage to bump into him, and since he and Dorian are an item, I figure he’ll pass through here?” Victoria ticked her eyes to the three other boxes in her hands.
Then Danni asked about the elephant in the room. Vicky sighed. ”I’m… reasonably certain that one’s on me. I didn’t realize what I was doing at the time, but… I sort of made April a lightning rod for some of my issues with humanity as a whole. I still maintain the issues exist, but… yeah, she didn’t deserve to be made an avatar of them. Thinking about it, it’s not the first time either. Sabine had that ‘honor’ before April.”
The next sigh was heavier. ”All that computing power in me isn’t helping any with learning how to… I don’t know, feel? I’m a lot closer to my actual age in that regard, I think. But back to your sister - I don’t even know how to go about apologizing to her. Last time I tried it led to this situation, and it ended up pretty much with ‘don’t ever speak to me again’. I don’t want to aggravate her any more than I already had. And… I deserve the hate.”
“Oh, yeah. Lemme just…” Danni grabbed the rest of the boxes, turned to head into the room, and stashed them in separate hiding places. He scrutinized his handiwork, shifted a few things around, and then nodded to himself. Hidden perfectly! He closed the door and beamed at Vicky. “Perfectly ‘idden, t’anks ta my years of prankin’ t'e siblings.” Danni declared proudly, rejoining Vicky in the hallway. He frowned a little at what she said.
“I mean, if you're really sorry, t'en you don't deserve ‘ate. Like ya, do somet'in’ mean and def deserve a little upsetti. It's gunna happen. We're teens for cryin’ out loud! We get ta be emotional and confused and dumb - even if reporters think we should been around ta stop wildfires t'at ‘appen all t'e time.” Danni simmered irritably, but shook it off. “I mean, you right. Rillie is def spicy ‘bout it and if what Rillie said is whatcha said, yeesh. I woulda crawled under my bed and cried foreeeeever, tbh. Super rough, ngl. But if you're genuine about bein’ sorry, t'en ya should say it, I t'ink. T'ey don't ‘afta say yes or even arknowledge it, but at least you can sleep at night knowin’ ya tried. Like, let's be real, who ‘asn't told someone somet'in’ t'at isn't super true when t'ey're angy? I've told Dee and Rillie bot’ at some point I never wanted ta see t'em again over silly fights but ‘ere we are, at superhero school toget'er and it wouldn't be t'e same wit'out t'em!”
“Idk what issues ya ‘ave wit’ ‘umanity and I def can't relate ta figurin’ out ‘ow ta feel - I feel everyt'in’ at 2000% all t'e time and it is tirin’ - but people make mistakes and t'eir ways of makin’ up says a lot ‘bout t'em as a person so be t'e person ya wanna be!” Danni encouraged.
Danni was always a man of many words, and Victoria would be ready to admit that all the flops in her mind sometimes had trouble parsing what he said. This time though… he was talking sense. ”I’ll… try. After Christmas. If she doesn’t take it well - or I fumble my delivery again - I don’t want to sour anybody’s holiday.” she declared. ”So, then… to the mall?“
Danni cocked his head, confused, as he slid his arm in Vicky's. “T'e mall? I didn't know t'ere were grocery stores at t'e mall! Ooh, we should stop by a few shops too. We can check out t'e new line by Jumbo Carnation! It's all ‘bout fight - wit’ a snowflake twist! It's gotta be gorgeous; t'ough I guess it depends on t'e mall. Which one ya wanna go ta? We could go ta Union Square or or or T'e Village or Brentwood or… Wait ‘ow are we gettin’ t'ere? I got scolded real bad t'e last time I tried ta fly and I t'ink Pa is busy and Idk where Spicy's been or we could pop a tele rq!” Danni started walking and gave her wide, sparkling eyes. “Can you drive? I always portal everywhere, I've never been in one! Can you show me your car? T'at's so excitin’! Movies always make people who drive look so cool and amazing! Yeeeeeeeees!”
”Well, if not the mall, where do you want to get the stuff you said we’d need?” Vicky asked, confused. ”And, well, I can drive, but I never got a car. Kind of pointless since I can fly first class whenever.” she explained, hovering a little off the ground to make the point. ”Hm. I suppose If I pushed I could fly us to Mexico and back for some authentic stuff in a jiffy… let me check.” she thought out loud, one more of her field generators humming to life, expanding the repulsor field to envelop Danni as well. Vicky reached out with a hand for him to hold in case he started drifting off, and watched with a satisfied smirk as he floated off the ground slightly. ”Well then, where to?”
“OMG t'is is so wild!!!!!” Danni giggled as he lifted a little off the ground. He snatched up Vicky's hand, not because he was afraid of floating away but rather ‘cause he just wanted to hold her hand. “Okay, okay, okay. T'e school kitchen ‘as t'e approx of what I need so we don't need ta go crazy wit’ t'e equip, soooo we just need t'e food. So, eit'er can go ta Tuho's or we go ta… Yeah, yeah lets go ta Nort’ Gonzales Market! T'ey ‘ave some good stuff. You'll love t'em! T'e owners ‘ave family t'at own ranches just ‘cross t'e border so t'ey get a decent chunk of t'eir supply from t'em. It's so nice! And t'ey really know ‘ow ta do ‘ot chocolate. It's nice and spicy. We should get some, you'll love it! And it's cold, so it'll be perfect! I ‘ate t'e cold, bit t'e winter aesthetic is so gooooood!”
”How do you ever have problems with cold? Can’t you just… flame on?” Vicky giggled, pulling Danni a little closer as not to lose him as she sent them gliding down the hallway and towards the exit. Dialing on one other generator, Tori made sure the air around her was at comfortable temperature. ”Show me the way!”
“Oh, yeah I def can! I mean, if everyt'in’ is good. You've seen what ‘happens when I use my powers- I'm not always in perfect control, ya know? So like typically avoid it in big places or if t'e fam isn't ‘round ta fix it.” Danni did a little spin, giggling with child-like enthusiasm, and tangled his fingers in with Vicky's. “Such a dif feelin’ t'an when I'm flyin’!” Danni giggled, keeping tight hold on her as they left the campus and sped across L.A.
North Gonzales Market was clear across the city, but Danni insisted it was their best bet. It was a lively thing, a few store locations and a collection of stalls strung out between them. Lights for the season lined the stalls and hung between the stores and trees later with decorations sprouted everywhere. The smell of chocolate, pine trees, and firewood floated on the air along with live music from one end pumped across the street speakers.
Danni pointed to one spot, a little corner with a beat up stall advertising a variety of fruit and veggies. “T'at one first!!! Good veggies for t'e fillin’ and t'en t'ey should ‘ave some cherries, I t'ink t'at's what they ‘ave in season right now, that we can munch on!” Danni directed excitedly. dly.
The urge to go over the sound barrier was real, but for the sake of eardrums and window panes everywhere, Vicky managed as she steered them where Danni pointed, touching down softly as a leaf kissing the surface of the pond.
As his hand left hers to point in a direction, Victoria looked at the appendage with almost regret, absentmindedly tucking her hand to her chest. “...cherries for a taco?” She asked, dumbfounded. ”Next you tell me putting chocolate in meat sauce is a real thing.
“Oh, mole! So gooood.” Danni laughed, pulling Vicky along with him. “And no, t’e cherries are for now silly! ‘aven’t ya ever just eaten while you’re shoppin’? Well ya are now!” Danni tore through the market like a storm, chatting with every person he could, introducing them to Vicky, pointing out his favorite foods and actively steering her away from others. The stores were a little easier - less people to distract him, a little more clinical in their execution, but Danni went down every aisle and touched almost everything and waffled between three different brands of masa for ten minutes, regularly asking for Vicky’s input. Danni’s shopping method was as chaotic as he was - doubling back through aisles and deciding he didn’t want items only to put them in random places - and eventually, finally, Danni decided they had enough to head back.
“Okay, okay, okay. I t’ink we got every’in’ we need. Def stuck wit’ t’e pork cause mmmmmmm, t’at’s gunna be so good. It’ll smell great too when it’s cooking! You’ll love it!” Danni bounced excitedly on his feet, the masa on one hip and bags hanging on his other arm.
Vicky didn’t have much input to give. Not only because her world was more like the contents of Aldi rather than Walmart - There were cherries. Why did it matter which stall they were from? Why was there more than one stall? - but also because she was overwhelmed by the amount of information that she was receiving. Information, that, at the end of the spree, made a weird amount of sense, despite being served in Danni’s special brand of english. ”Passion.” she suddenly said, as something clicked for her. ”I see. That’s why you’re this good at it. It’s not a hobby or love or care, those are… not enough. You can not possibly spend ten minutes picking flour because you only love cooking. It’s passion. Or obsession. Don’t care, if it works.”
She looked at him being covered in bags like a christmas tree in candy, and then checked her internal clock. ”Okay then, time to motor I guess. French guy goes up!” she giggled, reengaging her generators just as she grabbed onto Danni’s shoulders, hauling them through the skies back-
-for them to find out the power was out. ”Oh… well… I guess something can be improvised? We have… Induction,” she said, holding up one hand with an active generator attached to it, which then immediately attracted the few loose pieces of cutlery she left around and turned her hand into a giant pincushion, “infrared…” she held up her other hand, the generator in it glowing orange and causing the heated air above it to dance, before she looked at Danni, “...open fire?”
Danni looked around and shrugged. They were using everything for the most part so stuff shouldn't spoil. “Yeah, I can give us t'e ‘eat. T'at's ‘ow I learned ‘ow ta control a lot of my power early on - wit’ lots of supervision and fire extinguishers! So let's get cookin’! T'ough, ya t'ink ya can figure out ‘ow ta get us some light? I gotta focus and spooky, scary skeleton shadows are bad for t'at!” Danni asked, setting stuff on the counter and producing a small ball of fire, just enough for them to start rummaging through the cabinets.
”So long as you promise you won’t set off the sprinklers or the fire alarms.” Victoria grinned, shutting her generators down and dropping the cutlery into the sink. She looked up and considered the request. She could wire herself to the light switch, but then she would be too far to see what Danni was doing - she didn’t even consider for a second that she might be called to actually do something - Allright. Overkill solution but can’t be helped. “Well, as the saying goes, let there be light.” she snapped her fingers as most of her generators turned on, deploying an offset EM point source by the ceiling that emulated sunlight. ”Allright. Now what?”
“Oh ceilin’s are Pa’s t’ing. I’m more likely ta take out a wall!” Danni laughed, only a little bit nervous. Aight! So We got t’is ‘ere bowl for mixing dough, a bowl for the seasoning, skillet goes on t’e stove along wit’ t’e pot… Can we just use one of t’e ot’er ways you said, idk what infraed is, but idk if we have any pots t’at’ll work for induction ‘cause boilin’ water would be nice at t’e same time as the pork.” Danni looked a little sadly at the pork shoulder in the bag and instead pulled out a package of pork tenderloin. “Not gunna be carnitas, buuuuuuut we’ll get it close! Gunna take too long ta slow cook wit’out a full workin’ kitchen ya know, but t’ese looked like pretty good pieces so lucky us!” Danni flashed Vicky a victory sign and continued pulling out items.
“Cutting boards, salt, chili powder, ancho chili powder, cumin, paprika, cilantro, coriander, cayenne, pepper, limes, garlic, chilies, olive oil… Alrighty! I t’ink we’re good!” Danni flicked an ember under the skillet and it flared into a hot, steady flame. He passed Vicky the dry seasonings, a bowl, and a spoon. “So, you’re gunna take equal parts chili powder, ancho chili powder, cumin, paprika, half ground cumin, coriander, and cayenne, a few pinches of salt and pepper each and mix that together. T’en, you’ll want to rough chop t’at cilantro, but we’ll put t’at on top once we plate tacos! I’mma work on chopin’ up t’e pork so we can drizzle it all in olive oil and then pat it down real nice wit’ your seasonin’ mix!” Danni explained, sliding a knife under the plastic for the tenderloin packaging, plopping one of them onto the cutting board, and removing a few bits and bobs before dicing up the tenderloin.
“I can do hot water, I’ve got one generator left. dQ = m.c.dT is the part I am good with.” Vicky smiled, an expression that turned into an uncertain grimace as she was handed ingredients to process. Four of them which seemed to be for the same effect. She looked at Danni quizzically: ”Can you organics really tell the difference between four kinds of ‘my mouth is on fire’? Also, ‘equal parts’ is a relative measure. How much, uh… rub, is it? Will you need in total?“
Danni shoved his chopped up pork off to the side and gave Victoria a thoughtful look. “Uh, uh, uh, uh. Enough ta coat all t'is!” Danni gestured at the pile of meat. “So, uh, like t'is much? Idk, I kinda just… make a bowl of seasonin’ and ‘ope its enough! Like, we're gunna put a bitta oil on t'ese and t'en toss ‘em around in t'e skillet for a good sec, t'en we'll let it ooze and gooze for anot'er ten minutes, and t'en we'll work on t'e tortillas! So uh… like, a few cups of water? Mostly gunna go by t'e feel as we're makin’ t'e dough!” Danni explained, drizzling oil on the pork and sliding it to Vicky. He measured out some masa in another bowl, humming happily.
Vicky scanned the chopped up meat, estimated the average surface area and calculated the amount with a bit of a safety margin. Charlatans dealt in hope. Tori liked plans.
As the meat slid into her view, she looked at what Danni was doing, saving the measurements. She’d need to replicate this on her own after all. “Hey, Danni?” She said as she mixed the meat and seasoning, “Thanks. I didn’t really expect you to drop everything and help me with all of this, what with the sister situations and all, so… thank you. Very much. You let me know if I can do something for you at any time, kay?”
Danni beamed at Vicky. “‘ey, t'at's what friends do right? We ‘elp each ot'er out! Ya know, it's important we take care o’ each ot'er ‘cause God ain't gunna do it for us! At least t'ats what t'e fam always says. I just like makin’ people ‘appy, ya know? And if it just takes a taco ta do t'at, t'en I'm not gunna turn t'at chance down! Plus, I like bein’ ‘round people so its a double whammy. Unless I'm bleedin’ out in a ditch somewhere, I'll always be ‘round if ya need me!” Danni added salt and whisked it together, tongue sticking out as he did. He nodded after a few minutes. “Oookay, just gotta add one and ‘alf or so cups o’ ‘ot water, stir it in nice and slow, and t'en we'll kneed it for a few minutes, let it rest for tennish, and t'en make t'e tortillas!” Danni left the bowl in favor of skipping over to the skillet, pressing his hand against the metal once, twice, and another time with the back of his hand. He frowned and the flames got a little hotter.
“Okie dokie! Now we let t'at get a little ‘otter, we'll do a resl fine coat of oil, and t'en pop those in t'ere, sear ‘em best we can, and t'en set and simmer for twelvish minutes!” Danni clapped his hands excitedly. “Gosh, t'is is gunna be so gooood!”
”Please don’t talk about bleeding out in ditches, or I might just have to start implanting my friends with location and vital sign trackers. Let’s try not to die on each other again, aye?” Vicky groaned, and then did a double take as Danni tried the temp of the pan. With his bare hand. “Did I miss you being fireproof or are we making Danni tacos in a more literal sense? You know I can see temperature, right?
She then took a step back and scanned the room though. ”Huh. No boom.” Usually when she was in a kitchen this long, something would have already been broken and or on fire.
Danni blinked. “I… did not consider it. Again, I def cook by the vibe so like, idk tech what t'e temp needs ta be eit'er tbh. Its fiiiine, I do it all t'e time. Plus, I luke ta t'ink Imma a little fire resistant. Like, my own doesn't burn me obvi but I can ‘andle a little ‘eat! Just not smoke, cause t'e I cry!” Danni hummed happily, doing a little wiggle once the pan was hot enough and swimming over to the coated meat. He popped just a bit of oil in the pot and dumped the pork in, evening out the layer with a spatula and sighing contently at the sound of it sizzling and the smell coming off the pork.
“So, what's your next big project? You're normally tinkerin’ on somet'in’, but I don't t'ink I've ‘heard anyt'in’ recently! Got sonet'in’ super fancy you're workin’ on?” Danni asked, then blinked. “Oh! And once we get t'at water boiled, we need ta stir in a cup or so inta t'e masa mix ta make t'e dough for t'e torts btw!”
”On it.” Vicky nodded, pouring the water and setting it in front of her. Then she moved the hand with her remaining generator above it and turned the heat on.
She raised an eyebrow at Danni: ”Oh, bits and bobs. Mostly software. I do think I can rebuild my generators to smaller versions and have more of them. Should give me more control when I use them, but that’s the small stuff. Bigger one… is ripping out my Ultron core and replacing it with software that doesn’t boil down to ‘belligerent asshole’. I might not be as good as I am now but at least I’ll no longer be a disaster waiting to happen. Halloween was way too close for comfort.” She frowned.
Then she smirked as the water started to boil. ”Aaaaand… if the last thing I have in mind actually works… it might be my Magnum Opus. Whatever else I end up doing in my life, I could very well be remembered most for this. No one else managed it yet as far as I know. At least not on Earth.” Tori teased, but offered no further details freely as she scooped up a mug of the water. ”In there?” she pointed at the powdery mix, just to be sure.
“Ooooo mini generators? T'at sounds fun! And yeah in t'ere! Just go real slow and stir while ya do it.” Danni started flipping pieces in the skillet, but frowned. “Wait, wait, wait. You're just gunna tear a bit o’ yourself out? Ain't like, dangerous? Like if I tore out my uh… idk what part o’ you t'is core is, but like my tummy maybe? Yeah, t'at feels pretty core-y. If I just tore out my tummy, my fam would ‘ave some words for me after t'ey ‘ealed it all up. Like, you aren't gunna die, are you?” Danni fretted as he gave finished flipping everything and popped the lid on, turning down the heat to a simmer and squinting suspiciously at Vicky.
“Magna what? T'at's not a real word.”
”Magnum Opus. Something that is considered the most important work of an author. The theory of relativity, the Mona Lisa, Symphony number nine. Things like that.” Victoria explained, mixing up the dough and shaping it per instructions. ”I’m not going to die, mom’s helping me with it. The core isn’t me per se. It’s… Hm… Brainstem would be an appropriate analog I guess? I takes care of the background processes, like your brainstem makes your heart beat, takes care of your breathing…”
She handed Danni the shaped dough. ”Only mine is also a thing of its own, and I want it gone. So yeah, I guess I’m getting a bit of an operation on my head. I’ll probably be slower, maybe a bit dumber… but I won’t have to be afraid of killing those I care about anymore. Worst case scenario, it takes a bit longer and I’d miss the start of school after the break.”
“Okay, okay, okay, I getcha, I getcha, I getcha! So it's super important, super awesome project! When do you t’ink you'll be able ta get it done? Ben ready ta show off ta t'e world? Oooo, can we ‘ave a fireworks display? Oh, oh, oh! I can be t'e fireworks display!” Danni accepted the dough, quickly dividing it and rolling it into small balls. He handed them off to Vicky, along with a rolling pin and instructed her to roll them into four to give inch disks.
“Brain surgery is waaaay worse t'an stomach surgery! Do you like, ‘afta recover after? Do you want us ta come visit?! I can brin’ more food, I can brin’ little gifts, I can brin’... idk puzzles or somet'in’? I fon't actually know what peeps in ‘ospitals like. Ooooo, ‘ospitals are like weirdly quiet right? Maybe I can bring kazoos. I bet everyone would like kazoos.” Danni popped off the lid to the pork and stirred it a bit before settling it back on. “Okay, we got a few more minutes t'ere so we'll get started on warmin’ t'ose babies up!” Danni popped out another pan and swapped off the pork one, letting them finish cooking in their own heat.
“So just pop t'ese in t'e pan for like 30 secs each side and t'en stack ‘em on a little plate and t'en once t'e pork is done, we'll plate t'em up, drizzle t'em in the sauce, and t'en top wit’ a touch of fresh cilantro!”
Vicky took a breath to answer. Then paused. ”You know, actually… It can be made to do fireworks. Technically it can be made to do anything. Heck, probably that cryo cannon Dorian wanted. Just depends on how much time I have to research applications of it.” she tapped her chin, ”And I don’t go to hospitals. I go to a lab. It’s going to be a boring affair really, not worth a visit. Hook up to a backup computer, purge the core code, upload the new code. Then, testing. Lots and lots of testing. Mostly whether I can still move well, so feel free to drop by if you want to spend a few days in the gym.” she offered, somehow not seeing Danni in attendance. ”Look I’ll be fine. Back when I was… younger… I wasn’t even housed in this shell, I was just a server rack. That transition was much more risky and it went fine. You enjoy your Christmas, and I’ll see you when school starts. Promise.”
The first tortilla came up a little bit on the charcoal side, but the rest, dare she hope, looked edible. A moment of plating later, Victoria was looking at the finished meal. Suspiciously.
“Ooooooh, looks pretty goooooood. Are you gunna try it?” Danni asked, plating another and taking photos. “Actually, photo time first!!!” Danni held up the taco he made like he was about to eat it and nudged Vicky to do the same.
Vicky rolled her eyes, but complied with an ‘Ugh, fine.’ At least she had nothing stuck in her hair this time. Once the media duties were done, she held up the taco against Danni. ”Well… cheers.”
