I actually kind of like the idea that they don't know much. Just a hazy of knowing but not all at the same time. Information is there but a part of them feels messing because truth be told it is. The emotions they could feel at interacting with another God/dess be they good or bad and trying to understand why they feel this way with a stranger.
The second option they would have more of a firm idea on the world around them. I think it would move the story but you would lack the cool things you could do with the growth of each individual character.
