There's a difference between the ability to be social, and the desire to be social. I function perfectly fine going outside and talking to people, but that doesn't mean I *like* doing either.

Pilk seems to be trending, so I tried it. Anyone who tells me this is a good drink is no longer a person I wish to associate with.

@Ammokkx Don't you fucking start nit-picking over terminology with me. I made it clear what I meant.

I don't really have much more to add without repeating myself. I have no desire to change your mind. Doing so would only ruin what you currently enjoy and that isn't how this one does things. We're just going to have to disagree.

I mean, you're in a discussion thread lol. If I didn't want to argue about it, I wouldn't have replied in the first place.

Even then, my first sentence includes "to me," which is my attempt at setting an expectation for it being a subjective distinction. I still think words like that have merit, because it carries a certain implication. What's there to "legacy" if there's no "legacy" to speak of, right?

In particular, you never explain why one and done is "shallow and lazy." To me, it's the exact opposite from this, as you're putting effort into building something new from the ground-up each time you undertake a creative endeavor.

I also don't see how you can be better developed if your development doesn't carry over- and I'd dare even call this a detriment as it would imply a certain unwillingness to change them. Development is good, both in the negative and positive sense. A character should, ideally, change throughout the story- at least in a leading role, which is what each character barring NPC's in an RP are. It's good to have fairly one-dimensional ones in supporting roles since they don't get nearly as much spotlight, so having someone to learn from is ideal. But if your focus is on a singular entity, they should ideally be molded over the course of it to keep it fresh and interesting, and also make the story have weight and a point.

I also don't see how one character over-and-over has inherently more love put into it than a one-shot. Especially not in the case of Tamatsu, which I will never shut up about because she's a stroke of genius I'll never be able to replicate and that makes me upset :c. As a person, I grow from trying new things, so I'd like the perspective from someone who sees merit in repeatedly doing the same thing and growing from that.
I’ll not pretend to understand mentality of people who describe legacy characters as somehow flawed or those who play them as inferior. To me, all that means is admitting an inability to adapt one’s own world view as well as the arrogance to declare anybody who disagrees with you as simply “wrong”. I could go so far as to describe the practice of discarding one’s characters after only one use as shallow and lazy, but that would only be me being spiteful.

Legacy characters gain the benefit of being established and better developed than ones made up on-the-spot. More love and heart can go into a creation that persists than a simple one-off who will be forgotten in a year but I digress.

The simple fact is that both one-offs and legacy characters have merit. Any GM can tell you all about that. Arbitrarily condemning one or the other is a sign of weakness on the part of he accuser. However, preferring one or the other is simple opinion. I enjoy a mix of the two as a GM and, in fact, find the “disposable” one-shots essential for the random NPCs that don’t really matter. A few, even, have gone on to become fleshed out and beloved additions to the party.

But there is a difference between a legacy character and a re-used one to me.

'Legacy' implies just that- the character has a history. This would imply that, if I played a mecha pilot in one RP and this RP got to its conclusion- I would then bring this character into another mecha RP with all of the experiences of that previous one. It intrinsically links one to the other.

I simply don't agree with resetting a character to 0 and invalidating their past experience, unless they never had any experience to begin with. In the latter case they're a concept, not a character. Playing the same thing over and over is boring and pointless to me- the least you could do is give them a facelift.

It's like playing an already established character to me- why would you bother? Make something new, something fresh. Continue to experiment by writing something new. I recognize people will still re-use characters and I'm in no position to tell them they're wrong for it or should stop, but I don't see the merit in it on a personal level, not anymore. I've had only one 'persistent' set of characters from way back in my Tumblr days, and each of them never got reset. They carried every experience and (tried) to grow or change as a person from them.

The only time I'll do a reset to 0 is a literal reset to 0- with which I mean a reboot of the same idea. No reason not to give it another shot at that point, as the explicit purpose is to try the same thing again but different at that point.

I realise I completely shoot myself in the foot sometimes with this- I'll never be able to pull of Cyll, Yasu, Tamatsu and Kyogi again. But the thing is that those were tailor-made to the story that was trying to be told there and I couldn't just import them to another RP, because I might as well play a new character with how I would have to change them. That seems more interesting to me than forcing this square-shaped brick into a triangle-shaped hole. Sure, I could cut off an edge or plaster some stuff on it to make it fit the shape, but it's not really the same object by the end of it. Better off just grabbing a pyramid.
@Ammokkx: Sorry about that. Trying to figure out a good way to close out the day in-RP, since people all seem to be running on different times right now. ^^;

Well, my problem atm is the fact that I don't really want Nico to be stuck interacting with Himeko forever, but if I don't do that, I don't really know where to go from here.

Not entirely sure what to do now, ngl.

The brilliantly red-headed blue-clad teacher would move her gaze slowly down and then up at the person that had stepped into her turf. “Another one.” She would begin before looking eyes with them. “Well you certainly at least appear to have the fire that a duelist needs. Either that or your really overcompensating for it. So why don’t you show me how strong your bite actually is.” She said as she flexed her hands a bit to ease up the tension in her muscles from drawing cards before activating her duel disk for another round. It seemed that her duel disk was of the older solid model kind.

Miku didn’t respond to her would-be teacher, at least not with words. She pulled up her arm. The rectangular device on it clapped out both sides. It projected a black blade with a dark, purple haze around it. "I won’t lose," she stated. "I’ll prove that right now."

“You, and every other person I’ve seen today has walked up to me with that exact same line.” The Teacher said as she rolled her eyes. “Many end up crumpling in their conviction. Will that be you?” She said as the automatic deck shuffling function of her duel disk whirred before stopping, as did Miku’s. “Now the rule of thumb for these entry duels is that the Students get to declare to go first or second. So what will it be girl?”

"Isn’t it obvious?" Miku retorted. "There’s no point if I’m not going all out. I’m taking the first turn!"

“Then, Girl. There is only one thing left to say.” The Woman said with a bit of hair flourish.

“Duel!”

Waves gently crashed against the side of the ship, its movement causing a still breeze to wade through the hair of a girl standing on its deck. The cruiser's destination was close enough to be in sight, the coast of mainland Japan stretching out in front of her eyes. She was holding a letter close to her heart. The paper was wrinkled from both the breeze and the girl's strong grip on it. A grip as tight as the leash on life itself. The girl closed her eyes, thinking back at what she had to leave behind. There was barely any luggage of hers aboard the cruiser.

"I'm sorry, mom, dad..."

...but Miku was in control of her own destiny now. She was going to Mitsuri. Nothing would stop her from that.
Miku was in awe the moment she stepped in front of the gate to Mitsuri's campus. It took her a few metros to get there and it was a hassle to be on time, but she'd never seen something so modern or luxurious before. Even if the entire affair was nothing compared to some of the most prestigious academies out there, she hadn't been exposed to any of that. Being in the city like this was a new experience all its own. She tightened the grip on the sports bag in her hands, one which contained all the belongings she could bring. Breathing deep, she took her first steps onto the campus. It didn't take long for the girl to get spotted out by one of the already-enrolling students. A boy with poofy, blue hair and a leather jacket waved at Miku, who froze in place.

"Yo! You lookin' to take the entrance exam, right? It's up on the third floor!" they yelled at her, pointing behind them towards the large building at the back center..

"A-ah... thank you," Miku stammered out in reply.

"Hey, duel me when you get in alright? You seem to be sure of yourself with that bag, so you must be really good! I love a strong opponent!"

Miku glanced down at the sports bag, then back at the student. "...Yeah. I will," she replied with a fiery gaze in her eyes. The boy flinched for a second before waving her off. Miku made her way through the main building and climbed up the stairwells like the student told her to. Once reaching the third floor, she was informed of both who to face and when to do so. She seated herself down, watched the duels intensely and waited for her turn to come by. Miku didn't speak to anyone there. Nobody approached her either. That probably had something to do with the intense gaze she cast at the duel fields. Eventually, though, her turn came. It was right as the latest student was sent running out of the academy, crying, caused by the teacher Miku was told to face.

"I won't lose," she muttered to herself, setting aside her bag and ruffling through it to find her disk. She strapped the blue device to her arm and made her way down into the allotted arena. There, she was about to stand face-to-face with the stern gaze of the red-headed woman. Miku didn't falter. She couldn't falter. With her steeled resolve, Miku took her spot in front of Mikia Strusse.

✫✫ Nico ✫✫

"F-... Forward?"

Nico blinked a few times as she processed the meaning behind both the words she'd spoken and the meaning given to them by Nari. The catgirl turned red as a beet, frantically waving her arms in front of her as she tried to stammer out a reply. "N-no, wait, not like that! I-I, I didn't mean it like that, I swear!!" was the best she could muster. Nico buried her face in her hands as the tail behind her quickly tucked between her legs. "Ooooh... that's so embarrassing..." she muttered, alongside similar sentiments, to herself for a short while. Then both the young lady and the tail jumped up like they'd realised something.

"Oh my gosh I totally forgot! I was looking for my friend before I got roped into this," Nico quickly rambled off, looking around the area as if she was suddenly expecting to find someone. "She should be around this area... I have to go! I hope none of the shades got to her before they arrived here," she informed Nari. The girl quickly climbed back into a tree, but turned around in it and gave a friendly wave to her new friend.

"It's a promise, okay Nari-chan? If I ever see you in trouble, I'll jump in and help right away! So let's meet again, okay?!"

And with that, the catgirl jumped from branch to branch and, eventually, out of the whole park. She'd continue to find a safe spot and transform back, then searched for the shrine maiden around town.

Well in that case...

I will never not mention how upset I am I never got to play Tamatsu.

So let me set the scene here. You have this new upstart card game RP that just blew up- like, massively- and I was there since the start. I'd actually helped the GM brainstorm and he even assigned me co-GM at some point in time due to me getting super involved. I PM him to bounce ideas back-and-forth about what I could make my character.

Then it hit me.

"Let's play a dead girl"

See, it's not mentioned in this sheet since it's the public one n'd all, but with the lore of the universe, I could reasonably pull off Tamatsu actually not being a living human. But let's back up a bit; because this is a two-parter. Vanth was also a factor, and if not for the two of them, this wouldn't have worked nearly as well.

Vanth is this batshit mage who lived in ye olden days and was absolutely obsessed with the arcane. He'd go to any length to be the most powerful mage on the goddamn planet, up to and including self-mutilation and eventual self-lichdom. That was the baseline concept, but we had a whole discord for this RP, and it soon became apparent that through linking various WIP lores together, Vanth turned into an easy final boss character. He also refused to die under any circumstance, so he eventually sealed himself before a holy knight could finish him off for good.

Now why was sealing himself important, you may ask?

Well, through some leftover magic, he's actually the one to cause Tamatsu's accident. Sending a truck off-course while she was admiring some fireworks from afar caused her to crash into the lake, limbs crippled leaving her unable to swim. Vanth's entire gambit was reliant on this gentle girl to not have a deathwish, and since she desperately wanted to live, he could form a contract with her to reincarnate into her as a second persona.

So this asshole managed to not only defy death twice in the past, but actively caused an innocent person's death just to serve his own goals. Tamatsu is barely even aware he's there, but she almost impulsively knows she's dead too. The girl's just a poor innocent soul who absolutely did not deserve to be subject to this, but because she was so simple, it also makes taking over her mind super simple. I was actively working with like 4 other people on possible relations, too. Someone with a similar backstory (though the possessor isn't nearly as evil, nor was the character strictly dead, nor did the possessor cause the accident) was going to be her friend and it would lead to a really tragic fight where both of them fought to free the other from their curse by sacrificing themselves. Tamatsu was going to be frequenting the shop of an older character, who taught her the game. The Dread King and Vanth had a whole chain of backstabbing going.

And then the GM imploded the entire RP because he didn't flesh out the mechanics ahead of time ᕕ( ᐛ )ᕗ

I still consider Tamatsu and Vanth's dynamic an absolute stroke of genius I'll never be able to pull off in any other RP again, because the planets had to align for their existence in the first place. It makes me all the more bitter that I never got to write them.
