Name: Angus Tordum

Age: 67

Gender: Male(?)

Appearance: Angus is moderately sized for a Dwarf at 3'7. He is however stocky even for one of his kinsmen, seemingly flabby and rotund but possessing muscles that become quite visible as he stresses them. He has citrus orange hair that is lighter at the roots (thanks soot and dirt not reaching them) and bark-brown eyes. Angus has a short but strawberry-shaped nose with his eyes similarly small but of a more olive shape. His hair is organized into two large ropes of his mustache, his bear going free down to his clavicle, while the hair on his head forms somewhat of a mullet being short at the front yet going almost as low as his beard from behind.

He has a small but tightly fitting miner's helm on his head placed over a thick but skintight leather cowl. The helm has two real horns kept sharp pointing upwards, with leather straps to secure the whole business to his head. The helmet also has a specially designed polished steel mirror at the front, double-sided and unscrewing with one side concave and the other convex. This is placed behind a candle so that light from it is reflected over a wide area or is concentrated to illuminate what Angus is looking at from afar. That said, it is rarely used other than in the deepest and perhaps most supernatural of mines. He has a one piece chainmail body suit running from his neck to his toes but omitting his arms, occasionally gleaming as he moves. Over this he wears a tight suit of leather covering very similar areas of his body with or cloth sewn in at various intervals for the few cases he needs warmth. After that he is protected by a set of extremely thick shoulder and knee guards, alongside thick and steel capped leather boots and gloves. Should warmth be an issue, he carries a bear-hide cloak.

One will also never see him without various tools of the trade. Lanterns, a shovel, a heavy two-handed mining pick, a sleeping bag, pots, pans, cooking utensils, and other things necessary for possibly months long survival in the deepest of mines. His pride however is an old heirloom pick. On one side, it is a pickaxe useful for gathering various interesting and useful minerals. The other side is a hammer, to stop anyone in his path to gather these interesting and useful minerals. He also has with him a strong but battered recurve bow with several dozen arrows usually wrapped and an oily rag to light on fire. Depending on the situation he will also carry some of his family's brew with him as either means to keep the cold out or an emergency fire starter.

Skills and Flaws: Even at his age Angus is a skilled miner. Strong, quick-thinking if not precisely intelligent, dextrous, perceptive, and surprisingly agile despite the stocky build and stumpy legs of his race. Angus is a born miner, but does not shy away from other skills like fighting which have come in quite handy when dealing with denizens of the deep. He is also a somewhat accurate shot with a bow, however his true proficiency in archery is the speed at which he can draw his bow and shoot it, as well as the massive pull-weights he can handle to proper arrows as far down a mineshaft as might be needed to explode a pocket of gas.

However, he has many other issues that are typical and some atypical to Dwarves. Greed, stubborness, and grudge holding only begin to describe them. He has an undoubtedly inflated opinion of himself, is quite a drunkard even in serious potentially catastrophic situations in the mines (although he claims the ale helps him work... which it admittedly might)

Background: Angus was born to a long dynasty of brewers. They made (arguably) the finest ale in the deeps, well known for its creaminess that could last weeks without dissipating. It would seem he would go on in the family trade, for he just like his predecessors had an aptitude for the craft.

All went well, until the birth of his brother Snorri. He grew like a weed, and was more or less the definition of a child prodigy. The youngster had learned all his brother had at the age of twenty, and by forty had long since surpassed him. Angus tried his best, he worked night and day without interruption but he was no match for the little bastard.

In this vein, as his importance diminished so did his parents love for him until they began to grow cold, and eventually even feel animosity towards him. The young Dwarf was angry, angry as could be. The little upstart had taken most of what he had to himself, all he had left were things willed to him in old contracts.

Angus had few real skills outside of brewing, but this didn't matter, it was never too late to learn! Thus he went off into the deeps, purchased a pick and set off to work. He was initially a poor miner, only having seen how to use a pick in books. But he learned, and quickly. Angus soon had become a popular member of the workforce for he could brew for his worker-family at a moments notice to keep up the miner's rhythm. In the foundations of Dwarfen society, he had found happiness.

He has now worked for several decades in the deep, gaining skills, knowledge and perspectives he never before considered. Yet, adventure called. Eldest sons were selected all across the civilization of the Dwarves. Though initially wary, Angus stepped forth smelling the call of greatness and glory. If he were to succeed, or to fall, he knew his tale would be counted.

Hey so... we talked about tech and magic but a few more details, particularly pertinent to my Miner character. Does black powder exist for explosives for mining and such or is it more complex with arquebuses and the like or is it nil? Do mechanisms like Warhammer-esque steam engines, mass water wheels etc. or golems exist to aid the manual workforce? Or is it limited to crossbows and siege engines or just down to earth 11th century tolkien-esque medieval?

Name: Adelbert Miklosz Nagy-Szoklan

Character Description: Like all Ratlings Adelbert is quite short at approximately four feet in height. He has scruffy brown hair across most of his body, darkening to a tree-bark colour upon his head. His eyes are of a near identical colour to his hair and are headed by thick eyebrows. On his face is a very thin stubble usually appearing to just be part of his skin-colour. He has a moderate chin and nose but very contoured cheeks alongside his small but faintly pointed ears.

Role: Corporal and cook of the Shirran 69th "Brawling Badgers."

Specialties: Adelbert is a crack-shot like all ratlings, and is a good cook as well noted for his culinary skills to the point that he was noted even amongst his glutonnous-gourmet kinsmen. He is also a good scavenger like the rest of his sub-species going as far as being able to fabricate various Munitorum stampings and such to help when pilfering enemy munitions and such.

Equipment: He doesn't have any coherent uniform, wearing clothes much more akin to civilian garb than any sort of military attire including a wee bonnet. Yet underneath all this is he hides an XXS sized mesh-vest, alongside flak elbow/knee pads, long gloves, and capped boots to help him climb in addition to some basic defence. He carries a long-las, and an ornate and well made laspistol in a contrasting simple synthetic leather holster. In a leather bag he carries his cooking kit and improvised close-combat weapons, including a butcher-knife, a long fillet knife, a strong plasteel pot and pan, and various other implements to help him cook as well as a data-slate for miscellaneous needs.


Personality: He is quite stereotypical for one of his kinsmen. Quite jolly he is happy to tell an obscene joke and puff on his pipe even as enemy armour is about to roll over and flatten his regiment. He enjoys and values a good meal and drink above all else followed by a nice Lho-stick as a natural gift of the God-Emperor. Despite this he contains an inner order calmly sorting things in his mind into priorities based on probability and importance which he will methodically set out to accomplish, be it melting the face of an arch-heretic from miles away or finding local root vegetables for a nice stew.

History: He was born on the quaint early industrial world of Shirran Prime. His home subsides on it's ultra fertile soil that it uses to feed several systems alone, while still having enough to make sure all of the Ratling population has enough to make each man have an impressive collection of chins.

However, when a threat was coming towards the system the neighbouring planets called on Shirran for military aid, to which it reluctantly agreed.

Enter Adelbert.

The planetary governor of Shirran was a native of it, and apart from popping off every other night to work on data-slates and cogitators he was more or less like any of the planet. He had a neighbour however, one that he didn't like. One that he suspected of being too friendly with his wife, one who had been the winner of far too many local fairs and contests.

Here he exhibited some pettiness also typical to the sub-species, and one of the first on the list of those picked to join the military expedition was Adelbert Miklosz.

Naturally he was misinformed of the full nature of how service in the Guard works, but it didn't matter. He was sent of to Ganua Tertius as his first warzone. It was a nasty place, a swampy world only inhabited because it was rich in petrochemicals and other substances necessary for mass production of promethium. There undergoing was an invasion of the Death-Guard, in addition to countless heretics. Naturally he was assigned to a Ratling sniper auxilia, where he had his first sight of non-Abhumans. He fought with tooth and nail sticking to orders and assignments, even managing to explode the brains of a plague marine giving orders to his minions. The conflict was more or less abandoned when the planet had so many traitor Astartes deployed it was seen as more valuable to just explode the refineries of the the planet to consume the heretics with it. Only 5% of the Guard were evacuated, and Adelbert was only part of it because another regiment was in dire need of such an auxiliary as Ratlings.

From then on his auxiliary force went hopping from regiment to regiment, world to world as a quick destroyer of enemy elite forces. Be they taking out Ork Nobz or Eldar Exarchs they would drop in, harass enemy leadership, and then evacuate to another front with disarrayed enemies now ready to be mopped up by standard troops. It is now that his auxiliary is attached to a larger Guard force, ready to kill the next enemies of man.

That was my bad I thought ratlings didn't get armour but I checked my 'dex and they do. I gave him a mesh vest instead of flak since it's more flexible to move in but his joint protection is still flak to help climbing. No helmet because I learned from TF2 that hats are sexier. All good now?
