Jun-Sang Kim

Name: Jun-Sang Kim

Age: 17

Gender: Male

Personality: Jun-Sang is the very definition of a hard worker, which was due in part due to his Korean heritage. Jun-Sang is almost too hard of a worker, eschewing other things like sports, games and other such things. This also makes him not the friendliest person to be around; while he isn't opposed to social interaction, he doesn't have much in common with others, other than of course fellow studyholics. Jun-Sang is smart, and knows he's smart, and sometimes, that comes off as condescending, or giving an air of superiority. This isn't his intention, but merely a side effect of the way he perceives himself and others. He does try to be generally kind and helpful to others, but the way he composes himself while he does so may put some others off.

Backstory: The work ethic in South Korea is tough, and Jun-Sang experienced that firsthand. His parents constantly pushed him to do well in school, and so he didn't really have much time for leisure activities. Instead, he studied, and studied, and studied. Jun-Sang didn't really mind, though. Unlike his peers, Jun-Sang actually enjoyed studying. He enjoyed learning new things and applying what he learned in his everyday life. And so he went through his early life, not having that many friends but not really caring about it, either.

Jun-Sang's abilities manifested when he was 14. His parents were thrilled that their son had this ability within him. At first, Jun-Sang disagreed with their parents' outlook. This was just something that took time away from studying. But his parents managed to convince him by stating that this was just something new to study. When he thought of it that way, Jun-Sang was at least willing to give it a try.

This is Jun-Sang's third year at the Institute, and although he doesn't have that many friends, he is popular with fellow academics, and lots of younger students look up to him as a tutor. He's on good terms with many of the teachers as well.

Appearance: "No, no, carry the three here. You add the powers, you don't multiply them."

Equipment: Jun-Sang carries various small items on him at all times; his current collection consists of one six-sided die, one 20-sided die, three large ball bearings, and two small polished stones. As well as being fidget toys, Jun-Sang uses them in conjunction with his powers.

Abilities: Jun-Sang is incredibly smart, and has thorough knowledge of math, chemistry, physics, and electrical circuits. He is also an excellent teacher, being able to explain concepts in ways that others can easily understand.

Channeller category: Alternative

Description of power: Jun-Sang can alter the density of objects, increasing or decreasing the mass of an object without affecting the volume. Having been at the institute for the three years, this ability has an effective range of about 5 metres, meaning that he can affect the density of an object mid-flight. The volume of the target object and the amount he can change the density by are inversely proportional to each other; the larger the object, the less he can affect its density. Jun-Sang can choose to affect only part of an object. In this case, the volume of the part is factored into how much he can affect it.

Names/descriptions of moves: Impact Point: Jun-Sang increases the density of a particular point on his body, making it so that anything or anyone that hits it feel like they just hit a brick wall.

Catch.: Jun-Sang throws an object, increasing the density of it as it leaves his hand. This results in the object hitting with a lot more force than expected.

Rain of Pain: Jun-Sang throws a bunch of objects in a high arc, again increasing the density of the objects as they leave his hand. These objects then fall to the ground, pummeling anyone unlucky enough to get caught underneath them.

Lighten Up: Jun-Sang decreases the density of an incoming object, reducing the force of the impact.

[FUTURE MOVES]

Fortress: Jun-Sang increases the density of his entire body, becoming impervious to physical damage, and enabling him to hit like a truck.

Next Level Jesus: Jun-Sang decreases the density of his entire body to the point where he can float on water, or become lighter than air. With a little bit of manipulation, Jun-Sang can walk on water and even fly.

Sergio hated working with Valoran. The man always creeped him out somehow, and he shivered slightly. I'll just... Make this fast, Sergio thought to himself. A new job would get him out of the office as quickly as possible, so Sergio respectfully stood with his hands held behind his back in an almost military-esque stance.

"Yes, sir. Intel was wrong -- he was armed. Must've picked the gun up out of town. Little Charlie is back home safely and I've given that scumbag a week to leave the city. Is there anything else that needs doing today?"

Sergio had been pushing forth a lot more effort than most of the other peons. A lack of a proper family gave him more free time than most, so he was keeping himself occupied with his work as much as possible and in the process had picked up a reputation for always being around.

Doctor Cartwright

Personality:
Doctor Alexis Cartwright is a tweaker. While she doesn't resort to stealing to feed her addiction, she does dedicate an unusual amount of her annual income to feeding her Adderall prescriptions, which she continually refreshes at a 'doctor's office' (in reality a pill mill) out of town.

Dr. Cartwright is not a very pleasant person to be around, if only because she's constantly bugging out and roping people into her experiments when she's not sleeping or attending to patients. 'Hand me that scalpel', 'Screwdriver, please. Small Philips-head,', 'Bottle of stump remover, please,' and other phrases of the like make up the bulk of her conversations. Talking to people is a means to an end, not a pleasantry she usually takes part in.

Frankly, it's amazing that she's still alive given the amount of failed experiments, the volume of smoke continually pouring out of her personal laboratory, the adderall addiction, and the constant exposure to diseases she experiences on a day to day basis. It's been suggested that she's managed to pick up every bloodborne disorder known to man over the past couple decades, and that she's merely using her powers to keep herself from keeling over.

Interestingly, her weight fluctuates wildly. At the beginning of a school year, she's generally packed on an extra hundred pounds, which steadily falls over the year while treating injured students and rises again whenever nothing bad happens.

Backstory:
Doctor Cartwright was born to a middle class family in Miami, Florida, where she lived a hectic childhood with an otherwise normal family. At 7, she was diagnosed with severe ADHD-C and Bipolar-1, which prompted routine trips to therapists' offices and at least two separate instances of psychiatric hospitalization. During her teens, she was very much a danger to herself (though not to others), and would frequently take incredible risks just to push forth her knowledge of the world. Rodents routinely disappeared around her, and rumors circulated that she was somehow abusing them, which were of course completely true. Even with all of the chaos in her life, she was somehow able to graduate from high school with honors and a 4.0 GPA.

At twenty, her powers began to manifest while working on working her way through medical school, and with intense experimentation, she discovered that she was able to facilitate structured cellular growth by producing empty lattices. She never revealed the source of her unusual resources for research, though, and the Institute never heard so much as a whisper about her tricks. By twenty-four, she had graduated from the Florida Atlantic University College of Medicine with her M.D. in internal medicine, followed by a further five years of medical residency.

Eventually, she got out as a fully qualified surgeon. Rumors of the Institute made their way back to her through the grapevine and she decided to investigate the source of her powers as a fully qualified adult. Periodically a person would disappear from detention centers or psychiatric hospitals never to be seen again, with the explanation that they were going to a secure facility for greater care.

At thirty, she walked across a grass field on the Institute's opening day and handed her resume and a job application to the head instructor at the time. She's been there ever since.

Appearance:

Alexis Cartwright is short, at only 5'1", with warm-toned skin and reddish brown hair of variable length. Her face is very wide and round, slightly snaggletoothed, and gaunt. Nobody has ever seen her without the signature bags under her eyes, and her hair is usually unkempt and messy, though never beyond shoulder length. She is the closest thing to an 'old' hikikomori that anybody has ever seen. Were she to take care of herself, she would easily look as though she were in her mid thirties, but between her stimulant abuse and her tendencies to forego personal hygiene in favor of constantly working on her failed experiments, she appears closer to 60.

Thankfully, whenever she is called upon to save a life, she cleans herself up perfectly and dons scrubs of variable color (blue, red, or black). She never wears gloves as those simply get in the way of her delicate work. Keeping unnecessary bacteria and viruses away from students is rather important, after all.

Her weight fluctuates wildly over the course of the year due to the addiction and the nature of her power.

Equipment:
A comprehensive set of surgical tools - predominantly scalpels. Catgut and other suturing equipment are notably absent.
Copious quantities of caffeine and adderall.
Life support equipment of all sorts, including a modernized iron lung and an artificial heart.
CT scan and MRI machine.

Description of power:
Wholeness of Body: Alexis, at one point in the past, was only able to form completely inanimate lattices for healing purposes - rebinding damaged tissues and bones. More recently, though, she has picked up the skills and detailed knowledge necessary to replicate and lightly modify individual cells. Doctor Cartwright must come into direct contact with the tissues that they are attempting to replicate, and healing takes quite a lot of time (to the tune of several hours to completely reconstruct a single organ disrupted by a gunshot). As such, the Surgeon must cut into the body to perform their 'miracles', then heal the wounds inflicted to create an access pathway on the way out.

She cannot fully reverse brain damage, as the blueprint for one's brain is based on both genetics and life experiences. However, she can bring people back from the brink of death, so long as the body is still warm and the majority of tissues are still alive. She is incapable of removing microscopic foreign contaminants from the body such as poisons and bacteria, though she can and will refer students to any staff members capable of prescribing medications. Doctor Cartwright requires large volumes of food and drink to perform her healing arts because her materials cannot be created from nothing.

N/A. Doctor Cartwright is neither a teacher nor a combatant, and speaking the name of her powers only distracts from the extremely precise nature of their work.

Do not bother her with meaningless questions.

Institute role:
Resident Surgeon.

Why they were chosen for the Institute:
Students can't learn if they're dead or dying. Doctor Cartwright facilitates education by ensuring that students can return to class as quickly as possible.

Also, she unpacked her things before her application was even accepted, and it was more trouble than it was worth to tell her to go away.

It's the first day, so Mako probably won't be teaching a class. Or should I have her teach the first years after they're finished with the assessment test?

Jonathan had forgotten about the school's power testing protocols. While he wasn't required to join in, he was a second-year student, and on top of that, he had had the power of COMMUNITY driven into his head by Alexei. He very much wanted to take part and help teach the first-years teamwork, but he had other issues to attend to at the moment. Specifically, his nose. Getting that treated took priority, followed by meeting up with some of the other second year students to decide on clubs and other social groups. Perhaps there would be other students interested in Professor Hisakawa's art class.

With that, he made his way to Freyja's office. He hadn't ever been there before, as he usually had his injuries treated by either Asa or Doctor Cartwright.

Brock scowled at the small gathering of students. They were still trickling in and the head of the event was still nowhere to be seen. Had he known he'd be thrown head-first into a test, he'd have had breakfast before coming to the school. Tap, tap, tap -- his foot was bouncing on the ground impatiently and he had no interest in stopping it. At least it would be good for taking notes on what he'd have to deal with that year. Around him, the temperature was slowly falling and rising as he flexed his local thermostat power, and he gave off a very soft glow every few minutes. He figured that warming up a bit before the test was appropriate.

He looked around him for his party. He'd been intending to stick with that Yasu girl and Daisuke until they could all get their bearings, though in the commotion, he wasn't sure whether they were joining him or not. He also wondered if that girl he'd spoken to earlier would be joining his group.

"Namaskar, Meilin. I have missed you too. Have you been well over the break?", Daler responded, opting to forego his usual Sat Shri Akaal, as she was not nor had she ever been a Sikh. She was one of his favorite students, though she seemed to suffer from what he thought of as a lack of ego in his presence. She had perfectly nailed the mindfulness aspect of meditation but almost seemed too respectful at times. Her dress style neither bothered him nor excited him. Materialism -- including criticisms of clothing style -- was anathema to him, and he wouldn't have cared one bit had she shown up either covered in a mountain of cloaks or completely naked. Still, he had given thought to it in the past, which brought him to his current realization that he flat-out didn't care a bit.

Daler opted not to respond to her suggestions as to his wisdom. He realized he was old and experienced, but he wasn't entirely sure about 'wise' yet. Perhaps wise was just a word people used to describe others?

"It's been slightly calmer than usual this year, Meilin. A student made a grave social error and was punched for his troubles, but there has been no fighting. Skyblue is up to his usual antics and has come up with a fresh 'introduction'. He's really outdone himself this time. Oh, and if you would like to join me and the others for tea after scheduled events, I would love to have you."

Once the cart was full of everyone who would join him, he would ride off to drop off Clarabelle at the CTF woods and return to his office until the event ended.

Clarabelle comes to mind due to her extremely fragile nature, though she could fairly easily take part if she were to make full use of her dolls.

Alright, so for those of you who missed it, all of the first year students will have been told (offscreen) to meet up at the thicket of trees to take an assessment test with Asa, which will be a game of capture the flag. It will be done in order to assess how skilled and knowledgeable the students are at their powers. Non first year students are allowed to join, but they don't have to. I wanted to do this later after the students were given some time to explore the Institute building, but considering that not many people have been posting, I'm just gonna start it now to keep the RP from, well, dying. I'll also send a message to everyone who has a first year character about this as well
