It really depends on the game for me. not all rpgs are created equal, action, turn-based, or otherwise.

Valkyrie Profile looked interesting, mostly because I like fighting games, and incorporating them into a turn-based format looks cool. I haven't played it though. The only Shin Megami Tensei game I played (I think it was 3 or 4?) had way to much grinding and I dropped it after getting about 4-6 hours in. To each their own though.

It's like monster hunter, but faster.

And faster every which way. In monster hunter it can take you 5-10 minutes just to find the monster, where as some battles are over in god eater within that time. There's less grinding, I'm confident that you could beat the story missions without replaying any levels until you get to the late-post game. There's a lot more freedom and customization with how you equip your characters, and it's not tied to character cosmetics. I could personally never go back to monster hunter after playing god eater. That doesn't mean that it doesn't suffer some of the same pitfalls. Namely that while there isn't a lot of grinding, the game's very nature is kind of grindy in that you'll be fighting some of the same creatures a lot.

Story mode is hit or miss. It's pretty good at being funny, but when it needs to be dramatic it's usually a little too generic or rushed to make you feel sentimental about what's going on. I got both of them in a pack together on steam. It's good game to play if you don't want to think too hard, haha.

Orina finds herself dressing punk or goth a lot of the time. The one constant with her is that she is never very far away from her tiny top hat. She wears it all the time, even on stage.

Reason For Becoming An Idol?: Initially to keep up with her brother, but now it's to surpass him.
Personality: Orina is cheerful and friendly enough, sometimes bordering on playful or even flirty. But get talking about the right subjects and she'll show you her fierce determination. Some call it an iron will, others stubbornness. That's not to say that Orina is arrogant, only that once she sets out to do something, there's little anyone can do to stop her.

Background: Born in Russia, Orina knew early on in life that she was likely going to be second fiddle. She was never the best at anything, and her feelings of inadequacy were only compounded when her brother entered the picture. Calling them rivals would imply that on some level Orina could challenge any of her brother's talents. And he was so much younger than her! Despite their angsty relationship, Orina did sing for her brother's largely instrumental song. However, Orina decided to split off from her brother and is now trying to become something more than “That pretty girl that sings all of Avel's songs.” Since making her choice, Orina has stared in a few B-movies, sung some songs, but is best known for her publicity stunts like appearing “almost naked” in playboy.

Orina has about as many costumes as one would expect an idle to have. Rather than try to match her signature blue hair, she prefers to wear colors that are complimented by it. Green is her favorite thing to wear when getting into the mood to sing, though she prefers to wear red when she's feeling a little more... scandalous.

Idol Theme: Goth/Emo rock music. Whatever gets your mom to shake her head the hardest really.

Abilities: Orina's magic is fairly limited to utility powers that involve grasping hands, tentacles, and blots of darkness. There's a real hentai occult theme going with her magic. She primarily relies on her speed and shape changing microphone to dispatch foes.

Avel is not much for fashion, and prefers comfort over visual flair. He also prefers clothes that he can get into and out of quickly, as his condition makes it hard for him to dress himself.

Reason For Becoming An Idol?: Pressure from parents
Personality: Like most children, Avel is still discovering the wonderful world of personalities. He's at an age where he copies what he sees around him and experiments with those in his surroundings to decide what works and what doesn't. Most of what comes out of his mouth is from cartoons, movies he shouldn't be watching, and the internet.

However, between his pushy parents and being a paraplegic, he's rather negative.

Background: Aside from his condition, Avel Sokolov lived a mostly normal childhood. He was brilliant, and displayed a lot of dexterity in his hands and arms. This led to him being introduced to the government constructed Wukong device, which will be described lower. With this, Avel's parents believed he could be the ultimate idol. And they weren't about to give him much say in the matter.

Idol Appearance: Being that he is inside the wukong, he seldom does more than dawn a vest and tiny top hat. But you're lucky if you even get that.

Instruments: between seventy-two dolls? I think he has them all.
Skills: not much. Even his most basic needs are difficult with his condition.
Abilities: Avel can control a puppet army. Among the weapons in his arsenal is a frog violinist who uses his bow like a sword, an accordion fox that blows out poison, a monky that bngs symbols, usually against a B.O.D.'s head, and a fish who uses her harp like a bow to fire arrows. Avel literally becomes the commander of an army when he gets on stage.

The 'Explain The Appeal Of......' Thread

The anime/GoT circle jerks are real...

With that settled, I ask someone explain the appeal of the following roleplay concepts, as we have all seen them and some may have even been involved. what is the appeal of "school" roleplaying? Namely high school roleplays.

I had and even yet still hold great disdain for public education and that period of life. To not disgress from my point, why would anyone want to emulate being children, potentially again and in that environment? I can understand the allure of college where you find a bit of freedom children have, topical as that is but that isn't my point, and the responsibility of an adult but less than.

Speaking for myself, I was home schooled. And the idea of trying to fit a younger version of myself, or to just take the roll of a school goer, is fascinating to me. What would my class mates be? What kind of shenanigans would we get into?

But that's not why most people enjoy school roleplays. Sometimes it's just interesting to write stories about children, who are still discovering the world and the type of people they will be. These types of roll plays very seldom focus on the classes themselves and instead focus on the events that happen between the classes. While the drama in these stories isn't quite as high as in stories about vampire hunters and the like, the drama can feel more real because it's happening in a fairly ordinary situation. Though sometimes people will take some creative licencing and do "cartoon" versions of reality where things just out of the realm of reality can happen, which can make for some great comedies. Overall, the lighthearted feel of school roleplys is great if you want to take a break from the monster killing, and don't care if maybe it's a bit like every other school roleplay you've ever participated in.

School is also a great theme to mix in with other genres. You could have a military school, a monster slayer's school, and suddenly you have a setting that allows for those human connections in a more exotic world. But I think this is going beyond the scope of the original question.
