Meryn took a step forward and found the bag with her name scrawled on it. Bending down, she plucked a bit of fine green fabric out of her bag. Slowly a mass of heavy, layered cloth lifted up, and she all but scowled at it. She was no stranger to fancy clothing – she didn't mind it when the occasion called for it. But there was no way she'd be able to move in this layered, cumbersome thing. In a strange place like this, she had no doubt she'd have to rely on her agility. Especially since she had zero experience with fighting. Her irritation only increased when she lifted the dress entirely out of the bag to reveal a pair of fine silver heels resting at the bottom.

As she glared between the dress and the shoes, the people around her started talking about what they should do. Meryn was of the opinion that their first priority should be getting the heck away from the castle under siege, but thus far there didn't seem to be any trouble. She hoped everyone had made it out of the room. A quick count showed nine bags, but the Alchemist had said someone didn't have a bag of her own. That meant ten people. Meryn glanced back up to count six others, not including Diego and the queen… leaving three still in the room.

Her eyes widened as her gaze shot up to scan the roof, but there was no movement by the chimney. If they were taking this long… were they coming at all? Meryn's eyebrows scrunched together with worry. What if those Claw people had got to them? Or they'd been dropped in another location entirely? But then she was pulled away from her worrying when one of the men gestured to her, saying the Alchemist liked her.

Meryn just raised an eyebrow at him. If she had the Alchemist's favor, then frankly it wasn't worth shit. All she was to him and Diego so far was a delivery girl and a mute little safe to store all their cryptic secrets in. Her frustration grew as her mind flashed back to the two brief interactions she'd had with the men. This was bullshit. She – all of them – deserved real explanations if Diego and the Alchemist expected any sort of help from them at all. They'd been dropped unwillingly into some dangerous unknown realm, and they were supposed to what? Take orders like good little errand runners?

Dropping the green dress to the ground, Meryn marched to Diego in quick strides. She barely slowed when she reached him. He was a frail looking thing, but he towered over her. This didn't stop Meryn from bringing her hands up to his chest and shoving. She didn't push hard – just enough to force him back a step or two. But she was certain it'd get her message across. She glared up at him and brought her hands down to her sides, palms open in a question. She was tired of this game.
Cori shot a glare at Nathan as he laughed, her grip tightening around the shattered stump that remained of her branch. One good what to the head, that was all it would take… But in the next moment they were dropped in front of the crumbling mansion. That kid had better be here. Cori just wanted to finish this job and get home to wash the mud from her skin. Tossing the branch to the side, she dusted her hands off and started walking forward. Her leg throbbed whenever she put weight on it where that stupid quagsire had all but inhaled her foot. She hissed a bit at the unexpected pain the first time, but gritted her teeth and pushed through it after that.

"I really hope this kid's here," she said, her sour mood cooling a bit now that they were out of the mud. They had work to do. Plus, this old building had always given Cori the creeps. The wooden floor creaked with every step, the wind whistled through the frame and made it always sound like there was something else inside, and the light flickered through the cracked windows, always tricking the eyes.

"Jaspor," she called out along with her partner. But there was no response. Careful to stick close to Nathan, she crept through the house. The first few rooms on the ground floor were empty save for crumbling furniture and years' worth of dust. Every now and then a loose floor board bent just a little too much, or squeaked a little too loudly, causing Cori to jump and quickly move to another area. "Jaspor!" she called again.

Cori and Nathan moved on to the last door on the level to check before it was timing to climb the staircase. The door was already open, slightly ajar like most others in the mansion. Reaching out, she pushed it open, and it swung wide with a creek, the hinges grinding on each other. A shiver ran down her spine, but she stepped forward.

"Hello?" She froze when she saw a gaping hole in the middle of the room, the floor splintered and crumbling around the edges.

"H…hello?"

Cori's eyes widened at the sound of a faint, fragile voice coming from the hole. She turned up to look at Nathan before hurrying forward. Running to the edge of the hole, she stopped closer than was wise and bent down to peer through.

"Jaspor!" And indeed, in the shadows of the basement sat a young boy in a yellow shirt, a trusty zigzagoon curled around him. "Jaspor, your mom called us, we're here to help you," she called down to him. Worry was written clear on her face, her previous bad mood forgotten. "Are you ok? are you hurt?" Jaspor squinted up at them before turning back to look at himself, as though he had to take stock of everything.

"My… I fell. I think I broke my leg or something." His voice quavered with every word, and upon closer inspection they could see tear tracks cutting lines down his dusty face.

Cori looked back up at Nathan before continuing, "We're gonna get you home, alright?" Then she pulled out a pokeball and in a flash of red light her spritzee appeared. "See what you can do," she said, pointing down at Jaspor "He said his leg might be broken, but there could be other things too." The pokemon bobbed in understanding before fluttering down to the boy. "We'll be right down, ok Jaspor?" she called as the protective zigzagoon stood between its trainer and the foreign pokemon. "Enif will stay and help you until we get there."
Meryn froze when yet another stranger appeared before her looking… weirdly normal, actually. He smiled, greeted her by name, and promptly shoved a bunch of bags in her arms. When he introduced himself as the Alchemist, Meryn perked up. This was the man Diego said had brought them here. But before she knew it, he was turning around to leave. After a moment, Meryn managed to unfreeze herself. Dropping the bags in a pile on the floor, she dashed over them to follow the Alchemist into the woods. She only ran a few yards though when suddenly there was a flash of green light.

Running to where the man had just been, she turned around, looking for any sign of him. She gave a small huff and slammed the side of her fist into the tree next to her. He was gone. Damnit, she didn't want dresses or prophecies, she wanted answers. She wanted to go home. Meryn dropped her hand back to her side and turned to walk back to the edge of the forest. When she returned she saw one of the men from the room looking through a bag. Meryn just looked down to glare at the pile.
behold~ a post.
Meryn started a bit when the man – Diego – was suddenly hovering directly over her, whispering in her ear. His words, an explanation of sorts, only brought more questions than answers. Who was the Alchemist? How did this man know her name or that she couldn't speak? What was this prophecy that rang in her ears, echoing with a clarity that made Meryn certain she'd be unable to forget it? And why couldn't she tell the others? But then the moment was gone, and the man had turned his attention to the chimney like she had, as though he'd never said a word. Meryn was frozen as she stared at him, as though she could read her answers in his face.

But then the presence of another man pulled her from her thoughts. Meryn moved to look at him and help, only to see him staring at her with a too intense expression. He knew. Or at least, he knew that Diego had been whispering to her. A shiver ran down her spine under the weight of this man's gaze. Meryn, a proud little thing, couldn't help but raise a chin a bit, matching his stare before turning back to the chimney to help the others out. There was no time for this. She didn't know this Diego person or if he could be trusted. She didn't know any of these people, or what was going on. All she had to focus on was getting to safety first. She could sort out the rest later.

As the uneven roof grew more and more crowded, Meryn looked to the crumbling ramp again. She told herself again that it was the only option, but panic crept up her throat. At least they knew what dangers lurked in the castle. Who knew what called the woods home? Gritting her teeth, Meryn crept around the other people, careful to keep her balance. The wall that would be their bridge to "safety" seemed… unsteady, to say the least. Meryn knew she was more than capable of crossing it, but still. It was a long way to the bottom. Giving a soft huff through her nose, she placed a foot on the first few bricks, testing them. They were steady enough. Then she kicked off and began her path to the ground.

Bent arms out to her sides for balance, she scurried, light footed and quick, down the ramp. Every now and then a loose brick would wobble or even fall away, but each time she simply hopped to another section of the ramp and continued on. Down, down, down until finally, her boots met grass. Meryn let out a sigh of relief. She turned back up to look at the others behind her. Hopefully they'd manage down just fine. She reached up a hand and waved a few times, hoping they'd take it as a signal to come down. Then she turned and moved to hurry into the woods.
